Opis - Science in the Soul is a kaleidoscopic argument for the power and glory of science: the wonder of scientific discovery; the practical necessity of scientific endeavour to society; and the importance of the scientific way of thinking - particularly in today's 'post-truth' world. With an introduction and new commentary by the author in dialogue with himself across the years, the essays, journalism, lectures and letters gathered here range over subjects from evolution and Darwinian natural selection to the role of scientist as prophet, whether science is itself a religion, the probability of alien life in other worlds, and the beauties, cruelties and oddities of earthly life in this one. A sparkling showcase for his rapier wit, the clarity, precision and vigour he brings to an argument, the beauty of his prose, the depth of his feeling and his capacity for joy, Science in the Soul is further evidence of Richard Dawkins' status as one of science's all-time great communicators. Soul at the White Heat: Inspiration, Obsession, and the Writing Life Ecco

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A new collection of critical and personal essays on writing, obsession, and inspiration from National Book Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author Joyce Carol Oates. "Why do we write?" With this question, Joyce Carol Oates begins an imaginative exploration of the writing life, and all its attendant anxieties, joys, and futilities, in this collection of seminal essays and criticism. Leading her quest is a desire to understand the source of the writer's inspiration-do subjects haunt those that might bring them back to life until the writer submits? Or does something "happen" to us, a sudden ignition of a burning flame? Can the appearance of a muse-like Other bring about a writer's best work? In Soul at the White Heat , Oates deploys her keenest critical faculties, conjuring contemporary and past voices whose work she deftly and creatively dissects for clues to these elusive questions. Virginia Woolf, John Updike, Emily Dickinson, Henry James, J. M. Coetzee, Margaret Atwood, Joan Didion, Zadie Smith, and many others appear as predecessors and peers-material through which Oates sifts in acting as literary detective, philosopher, and student. The book is at its most thrilling when watching the writer herself at work, and Oates provides rare insight into her own process, in candid, self-aware dispatches from the author's own writing room. The New York Times Book Review has raved, "who better than Joyce Carol Oates . . . to explicate the craft of writing?" Longtime admirers of Joyce Carol Oates's novels as well as her prose will discover much to be inspired by and obsess upon themselves in this inventive collection from an American master.

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... In the Shadow of Foreign Tongues - Jerzy Jarniewicz

Książki & Multimedia > Książki

Opis - The title of this book comes from James Joyce"s A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man. In one of its most memorable fragments, Stephen Dedalus calls English an acquired speech, "so familiar and so foreign", in whose shadow his soul frets. Today, English is no longer perceived as a foreign tongue in Ireland, but Joyce"s, or Stephen"s, formula seems to describe most accurately our understanding of any language, and especially of the language of poetry. In the Shadow of Foreign Tongues includes eleven critical essays on the work of Louis MacNeice, Derek Mahon, Michael Longley, Seamus Heaney, Ciaran Carson, and Paul Muldoon, all poets from Northem Ireland who write in English. All, with the exception of MacNeice, belong to the two generations of post-war poets whose first books were published during the upsurge of the "Troubles". Jerzy Jarniewicz examines their relationship with various forms of "foreign tongues?, their thematic journeys abroad, their preoccupation with translation and dialogues with other poets, as well as their forays into other genres, such as prose or drama. The work of the seven Irish poets discussed in these essays forms a zona media where the familiar meets with the foreign, the here with the elsewhere, the local with the cosmopolitan, the specific with the universal, the vemacular with the literary. Bringing to intemational Irish studies his Polish perspective, analytical intelligence and deep, contextual knowledge of the works he exarnines, Jarniewicz, poet, translator and literary critic, has written a lively and informative book which is a significant contribution to the critical reception of contemporary Irish poetry. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The past fifty years have been an enormously fruitful period in the field of philosophy of religion, and few have done more to advance its development during this time than Richard Swinburne. His pioneering work in philosophy of religion is distinguished, not only for the way in which it systematically develops a comprehensive set of positions within this field, but also for the way in which it builds on and contributes to contemporary work in other fields, such as metaphysics, epistemology, and philosophy of science. This volume presents a collection of ten new essays in philosophy of religion that develop and critically engage themes from Swinburne's work. Written by some of the leading figures in the field, these essays focus on issues in both natural theology (dealing with what can be known about God and his relation to the world independently of any particular religious tradition or revelation) and philosophical theology (reflecting critically on the doctrines associated with particular religious traditions). The first six essays address topics familiar from natural theology (faith, theistic arguments, and divine power). The last four essays address topics bearing on philosophical theology (atonement, liturgy, immortality, and the nature of body and soul).
