Social Market Economy Springer, Berlin

The book presents the economic policy model known as Social Market Economy in Germany, the country where it originated. Although the model has since been adopted as core objective in the EU Treaty of Lisbon, experts still disagree on its exact nature. The author contributes to this debate by presenting the German economic system from an external perspective and looking at the extent to which it enabled the country increase its weight in international relations. The system s history, identity, political and economic concepts, including ordoliberalism, are analyzed. Its potential and shortcomings are assessed by comparing it to other forms of capitalism. A brief enquiry is made into whether the "Social Market Economy", or aspects of it, are applicable to other countries, including in Eastern Europe. Providing both theoretical and practical aspects, the book offers a valuable resource for researchers, public administration professionals, and policymakers.§

South Korea has attained spectacular economic success in recent decades. It has reached the status of a Newly Advanced Economy, with challenges increasingly mirroring those faced by other advanced economies. These include the necessary upgrading of the labor force, the frictions of switching to a national system of innovation adapted to leadership in R&D, market-based economic policies that reflect the government s difficulties in foreseeing future technological developments, and the consequences of social change for the innovation system and policy-making. In the forthcoming book the parallel challenges for innovation and technology for the Republic of Korea and other advanced economies will be analyzed more thoroughly with an international perspective in mind. This comparison and international benchmarking will allow policy makers and scholars to better appreciate how much the country has already moved into the circle of globally leading economies and what can be done to consolidate and strengthen its position.§

Moral Economy of the State Ohio University Monographs in International...

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Moral Economy of the State examines state formation in Zimbabwe from the colonial period through the first decade of independence. Drawing on the works of Gramsci, E. P. Thompson, and James Scott, William Munro develops a theory of "moral economy" that explores negotiations between rural citizens and state agents over legitimate state incursions in social life. This analysis demonstrates how states try to shape the meanings of citizenship for agrarian populations by redefining conceptions of the public good, property rights, and community membership. The book's focus on the moral economy of the state offers a refreshing perspective on the difficulties experienced by postcolonial African states in building stronger state and rural institutions.

Pharmaceutical patents and medical supplies for epidemical diseases: The struggle in less developed countries GRIN Verlag

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Diploma Thesis from the year 2004 in the subject Economy - Health Economics, grade: 1.0 (A), University of Tubingen (Wiwi Faculty), 98 entries in the bibliography, language: English, abstract: The last century has been characterized by great advancements of pharmaceuticals and a worldwide rise of life expectancy. Improvements in medical research have yielded significant progress in treating diseases that only recently were deemed incurable. This is most obvious in the case of HIV/AIDS where considerable public and private investments have converted this killer into a manageable chronic disorder for many in the developed world. However, treatment is out of reach for almost 90 percent of the millions of infected people in the developing world. Tragically, AIDS is not the only pandemic threatening the developing world. Malaria and Tuberculosis are only the most prominent of a large number of epidemical diseases affecting the world s poor. Overall, about ten million people die through infectious diseases each year, more than 90 percent of whom in the developing world. These people do not receive treatment for their diseases either because they cannot afford treatment or because treatment for their diseases does not exist. The following paper discusses these issues form an economic and institutional perspective, focusing on the most crucial aspects of pharmaceuticals in the developing world: the development of new pharmaceutical innovations and access to these products for the poor. In order to put the discussion into perspective, chapter 1 discusses the current situation of public health in LDCs and its problematic economic and social consequences. The situation is then confronted with the current state of intellectual property rights in international law. Chapter 3 introduces a discussion of the functioning and the theoretical justification of patents and their relation to the economics of pharmaceuticals. It will be shown how certain characteristics of pharmaceuticals and their production process make a political intervention necessary. However, as this policy instrument also causes considerable social costs, the trade off between these costs and benefits is thoroughly analyzed. Building on this framework, chapter 4 examines the potential effects of an international adoption of (TRIPS like) patents on the availability of drugs in LDCs. This analysis leads to certain conclusions, which form the foundation of the possible solutions to the dilemma presented in chapter 5. Chapter 6 concludes this study.

Understanding the Chinese Economies ACADEMIC PRESS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

China's economic growth has been more robust in some regions than others. In a country as large as China, examinations of regional differences can provide a viable way to learn about the economy as a whole. Rongxing Guo provides a systematic introduction to the economies of China by describing their external and internal drivers and by placing them within geopolitical and even socio-cultural boundaries. His pairings of case studies and empirical techniques reveal a rich, deep appreciation of the growth process and of interactions between key factors. This book delves more deeply into issues surrounding the economy than other books, offering a unique and important perspective that many will find useful. Covering history and administrative structures, unique economic features, some domestic economic issues, and international economic engagement, it describes an often inaccessible perspective with nuances all students of China will find valuable. This title introduces China's regional economies, often overlooked in US and European texts within larger contexts of social and geopolitical concerns. It explains the reform process since 1978 in a comprehensive, non-technical, and accessible manner. It includes online ancillaries of documents, links, and more, expanding the text and keeping it up-to-date. It features case studies in each chapter.

Over the past century, an extensive literature has developed, exploring the impact of entrepreneurship on economic performance. The active participation of entrepreneurs in virtually all aspects of business and economic activity has obliged policy makers within the global economy to consider entrepreneurship as a determining variable in any political force, not only for bodies and groups created specifically to this end, but also for any decision-making body. To this end, specific actions promoting entrepreneurship have already been established around the world. §However, the particular dynamics of entrepreneurship by women present unique opportunities and challenges. The women s perspective has often been overlooked in research, practice, and policymaking, and yet yields rich insights and implications. This volume features research from an international array of authors, global data, and in-depth analysis of women s entrepreneurial activity in Europe, Latin America, the United States, and Canada, to shed light on the positive impact of women s entrepreneurship on economic growth and development. The first part covers a broad range of concepts relating to the history and context of the female economic perspective. The second part focuses on performance and success factors, with respect to such issues as innovation, social needs, and entrepreneurial orientation. The third part addresses issues of financing, including discussion of access to capital, microcredit, and entrepreneurial behavior. The fourth part considers additional topics, such as work-family balance and access to education. Together, the chapters offer new perspectives on the unique characteristics of women entrepreneurs and their contributions to economic development in theory, practice, and policymaking.

Throughout history, migrants have fueled the engine of human progress. Their movement has sparked innovation, spread ideas, relieved poverty, and laid the foundations for a global economy. In a world more interconnected than ever before, the number of people with the means and motivation to migrate will only increase. Exceptional People provides a long-term and global perspective on the implications and policy options for societies the world over. Challenging the received wisdom that a dramatic growth in migration is undesirable, the book proposes new approaches for governance that will embrace this international mobility. The authors explore the critical role of human migration since humans first departed Africa some fifty thousand years ago - how the circulation of ideas and technologies has benefited communities and how the movement of people across oceans and continents has fueled economies. They show that migrants in today's world connect markets, fill labor gaps, and enrich social diversity. Migration also allows individuals to escape destitution, human rights abuses, and repressive regimes. However, the authors indicate that most current migration policies are based on misconceptions and fears about migration's long-term contributions and social dynamics. Future policies, for good or ill, will dramatically determine whether societies can effectively reap migration's opportunities while managing the risks of the twenty-first century. A guide to vigorous debate and action, "Exceptional People" charts the past and present of international migration and makes practical recommendations that will allow everyone to benefit from its unstoppable future growth.

Energy Security of the European Union and Russia: A relationship of interdependence GRIN Verlag

Seminar paper from the year 2010 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Region: Eastern Europe, grade: 9 out of 10, Maastricht University (Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences), course: Module D - Traid and Aid - European Studies, Specialisation in International Politics of the European Union, language: English, abstract: Energy security is a topic with growing importance on the global political agendas. Within the European Union (EU) the consideration of supply security is of particular significance as the member states depend on outside sources, meaning principally oil and gas, to satisfy their need of energy. The EU-27 was dependent on oil imports on 82.6% and on gas imports on 60.3% in 2007. Own resources are not sufficient and in the present days the EU merely covers 46.9% of the energy consumption by its own means. When the current trends proceed the EU will be dependent on 90% for oil, 70% for gas and 100% for coal in years 2030-40.Therefore, the role of producer countries becomes increasingly important, especially regarding Russia as it is the biggest importer to the EU in crude oil, gas and hard coal. The supply dependence on Russia could have severe consequences for the EU as gas disruptions leading to supply crises in several member states like in 2006 and 2009 had already shown. But also the Russian Federation is dependent because the EU is one of the most important consumers of its gas and oil exports. Russia s economy is reliant on oil and gas production; in 2007 the energy sector generated about 64% of its exports revenues. Accordingly, Russia also has to deal with the problem of energy security, but in the perspective that it aims at securing demand and the purchase of its gas and oil resources, especially by the EU.As both parties depend on each other in their energy security there is a case of interdependence in the EU-Russian energy relationship. When examining this relation of interdependence it is interesting not just to regard the present state of affairs but also the trends and future development and how the EU and Russia deal with that. For the analysis the notions of sensitivity and vulnerability are used. The guiding research question of this paper is therefore: What is the degree of sensitivity and vulnerability for the EU and Russia regarding their relation of interdependence in energy security? It is hypothesized that the Russian Federation is more vulnerable, especially on the subject of its political strategy. The concept of interdependence by Robert Keohane and Joseph Nye provides the theoretical basis for this paper. In order to conclude this paper, the degrees of sensitivity and vulnerability of the actors are evaluated and the hypothesis is proven right or wrong.

The 2003 Federal Budget was the first for a new Minister of Finance who was running for higher office and likely the last of an outgoing long-time Prime Minister. It thus represents the outcome of many conflicting tensions within a context of a rapidly changing political, economic and international environment. The papers in this volume, arising from an April 2003 conference on the Budget, examine the political context and economic context informing the Budget, and quantitatively evaluate the impact of the overall Budget package on the Canadian economy, the different economic regions and the fiscal health of public accounts. On the one hand are political pressures for long-term legacy commitments, while on the other is the fiscal reality of a slowdown in growth of the Canadian economy and the immediacy of public resources to be devoted to health and to post-9/11 security concerns. Specific attention is devoted to fiscal aspects of Kyoto, health and social policy, and tax changes from the current and longer-run perspective. The volume also looks at recent changes in budgetary accounting practices brought in with this Budget (full accrual accounting) and changes in transparency in recent years' budgets.

Karl Polanyi's "Great Transformation" and Development Politics GRIN Verlag

Essay from the year 2006 in the subject Politics - International Politics - Topic: Development Politics, grade: 1,3 (A- in the American system), University of California, Berkeley (Department of Political Science), course: Course in development politics (Prof. Kiren Chaudhry), 5 entries in the bibliography, language: English, comment: The essay gives a concise overview of Polanyi's central arguments, compares them to a Marxist approach and tries to evaluate Polanyi's importance for contemporary development thinking. Very good also for every general discussion about Polanyi. , abstract: Attempts to understand the transformation processes in the developing world have often led to a closer examination of Europe s and America s own history, as many theories of development suggest a specific interpretation of these histories: Modernization theorists, for example, see Europe s and America s history mainly as a straightforward progression towards welfare and democracy, eclipsing the aspects that do not fit into this picture, like the World Wars or the American Civil War. Therefore, although Karl Polanyi s "The Great Transformation" treats mainly historical events in Europe, it can at the same time be an important contribution to our understanding of the economic and social transformations in the developing world. In this essay, I will first try to make clear, what assumptions underlie Polanyi s argument and what he means by the notion of "market society". I will proceed in three steps: first, I will explore the different roles that the economy, according to Polanyi, plays in capitalist and pre-capitalist societies; I will look then at the historical processes that led to the rise of a "market society". Finally, I will discuss the political reactions to these processes which can be characterized, in Polanyi s view, by a "double movement".§As Polanyi is one of the most important critics of economic liberalism, it is helpful to compare his account of the "Great Transformation" to a second, even more influential anti-liberal perspective, Marxism. Apart from some similarities, the fundamental difference seems to be that Polanyi does not give a positive account of modernization. This leads to the question, how Polanyi s theories can improve our understanding of development today. I will mainly argue that although Polanyi gives an impressive account of the limits of a market economy, his treatment of politics is much too loose to be convincing.

The soap opera is a major form of media art and popular culture. Revered and reviled by fans and critics, its history spans and reflects social change and plays a vital role in the development of broadcasting. This book traces the genre from its beginnings on American radio in the 1930s to the international television genre it has become today. While concentrating on British soap operas, it also discusses the influence of their American and Australian counterparts. This is the first book to consider the soap opera within the economy of broadcasting; it includes a chapter based on interviews with leading broadcasting executives who give their analysis of the importance of the soap opera to their industry. The perspective of television producers as well as the views of audiences are also taken into account. Accessibly written, Soap Opera links the genre to both its media and its literary heritage, and argues that soap operas cross international boundaries through the universal appeal of their characters and their stories. It will be of particular interest to students of media and cultural studies, literary studies, sociology and television production courses, as well as to professionals in the television industry.

Hobo i tramp to określenia z czasów Londona, z tym że tramp nigdy nie hańbił się pracą, natomiast hobo pracy szukał, pracował, a potem wracał na szlak.
