Greatest Love Story Of All Time MICHAEL JOSEPH
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The Greatest Love Story of All Time is a laugh-out-loud debut novel from the Marie Claire blogger, Lucy Robinson. It's Fran's thirtieth birthday and things are good...She's bluffed her way into a Very Posh Job and her outlandishly handsome and talented boyfriend Michael is escorting her to the Ritz with a bulge the shape of a ring box in his pocket. But something has gone wrong. Very wrong. By the end of the evening Fran is howling in bed with a bottle of cheap brandy and one of Michael's old socks. In her quest to figure out why her life has suddenly gone down the pan, Fran comes up with a failsafe plan: live like a badger, stalk a stranger called Nellie and cancel her beloved Gin Thursdays in favour of drinking gin every night. But then Fran's friends force a very different plan on her and it's nowhere near as fun. How could eight dates possibly make her feel better? But eventually she agrees. And so begins the greatest love story of all time...Praise for Lucy Robinson: "The new Marian Keyes ...romantic and laugh-out-loud hilarious" (Cosmopolitan). "An absolute must-read" (Huffington Post). "Prepare for public-transport belly laughs" (Glamour). "Refreshingly playful" (Red). The Greatest Love Story of All Time is Lucy Robinson's debut novel. Prior to writing Lucy worked first in West End theatre production and then factual television, working on documentaries for the BBC, ITV, Channel 4 and five. Her writing career began when she started a dating blog for marieclaire.co.uk where she entertained readers with frank tales from her laughably unsuccessful foray into the world of internet dating. Lucy is from Gloucestershire where she was brought up surrounded by various stupid animals and is currently conducting an early mid-life crisis in South America. When in London she likes to think she lives in Highbury but in truth she is a person of no fixed abode.
World's Greatest Fishing Stories Weldon Owen
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Fishermen are born storytellers. Almost immediately after securing the catch, fishermen begin to craft and polish their success story for its debut. But, for as much as they love telling their own stories, they love hearing others' favorite true-life tales. From " Field and Stream " magazine's Deputy Editor, Colin Kearns and fishermen everywhere, comes " The World's Best Fishing Stories ." Anyone who appreciates a good story can appreciate the infinite resource that is the sport of fishing. These stories have been collected and shared throughout the 120-year history of the magazine, from writers old and new, tales infamous and unknown. The best true-life fishing tales about big catches, bright seas, and the respect that nature commands. A fishing story is, in the end, not about catching fish. What matters is the quest, the company and the challenge. This collection stories from the likes of John Updike, Bill Heavey, Zane Gray, Eddie Nickens, Ian Frazier, Kim Barnes, and Thomas McGuane, is one you don't want to miss!

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Greatest Gift DOUBLEDAY
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
For almost seventy years, people the world over have fallen in love with Frank Capra's classic Christmas movie It's a Wonderful Life. But few of those fans know that Capra's film was based on a short story by Philip Van Doren Stern, which came to Stern in a dream one night. Unable at first to find a publisher for his evocative tale about a man named George Pratt who ponders suicide until he receives an opportunity to see what the world would be like without him, Stern published the story in a small pamphlet and sent it out as his 1943 Christmas card. One of those 200 cards found its way into the hands of Frank Capra, who shared it with Jimmy Stewart, and the film that resulted became the holiday tradition cherished today.

Serpent Ring (A Story of Cleopatra) Legend Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The story of the last Cleopatra to rule Egypt is one that everyone believes they know yet it is full of ambiguities. History is written by the victor not the vanquished so our perception is based on lost manuscripts of those living at the time written on the instructions of the Emperor Caesar Augustus ne Octavian. We have been facinated, wrongly, for two thousand years by how a great general made a fool of himself for the love of a woman. The amount of time Cleopatra spent with either Caesar or Antony was minimal, yet there is no record of her taking any other lovers, inconceivable for the most desirable and passionate woman of all time. Why did the Romans passonately fear and hate the Egyptian monarch? Why did Julius Caesar name Octavian his successor instead of his son by Cleopatra and what was his relationship with this sickly little man. Caesar would have probably known about the assassination plot yet he apears to have deliberately walked into the trap. What went so disastously wrong for Antony at Actium and why did the Egyptian fleet cut and run at such a critical moment? The Serpent Ring is a tender story of unfulfilled love through the eyes of Apollodorus who carried the young Cleopatra passed her enemies in a bedroll to her historic meeting with Caesar. Set against an historic background climaxing at the greatest ambiguity of all; her death by suicide by asp venom. Was this murder made to look like suicide? And at the heart of the story is a fabled ring that could only be given in true mutual love. These events shaped the world we live in and the origins of some of our modern theological beliefs and conflicts.
Story of Art Phaidon Press Ltd
The Story of Art, one of the most famous and popular books on art ever written, has been a world bestseller for over four decades. Attracted by the simplicity and clarity of his writing, readers of all ages and back-grounds have found in Professor Gombrich a true master, who combines knowledge and wisdom with a unique gift for communicating his deep love of the subject. For the first time in many years the book has been completely redesigned. The illustrations, now in colour throughout, have all been improved and reoriginated, and include six fold-outs. The text has been revised and updated where appropriate, and a number of new artists have been incorporated. The bibliographies have been expanded and updated, and the maps and charts redrawn. The Story of Art has always been admired for two key qualities: it is a pleasure to read and a pleasure to handle. In these respects the new edition is true to its much-loved predecessors: the text runs as smoothly as ever, and the improved illustrations are always on the page where the reader needs them. In its new edition this classic work continues its triumphant progress for another generation and remains the title of first choice for all newcomers to art.'This is a book which, widely read as it will certainly be, may well affect the thought of a generation. Gombrich writes conversationally and intimately. His learning, though very perceptible to any student of the subject, is worn lightly, but he has something new to say on almost every subject. He can illuminate with a few words the whole atmosphere of a period.' T J Boase, Times Literary Supplement, reviewing the 1st edition, 27 January 1950 'A pure delight, intellectually and physically.' Professor H W Janson, New York University, 1950 'Like every art historian of my generation, my way of thinking about pictures has been in large measure shaped by Ernst Gombrich. I was 15 when I read The Story of Art and like millions since, I felt I had been given a map of a great country, and with it the confidence to explore further without fear of being overwhelmed.' Neil MacGregor, Director of the National Gallery, London, 1995 'It is hard to overstate my enthusiasm for this new edition of one of the pivotal works in the great cause of helping bring people and art together. The elegant new design, bringing the illustrations back into their proper relationship with the text; the glorious colour of the illustrations, many completely new; and the limpid, radiant text, itself updated, combine to make this edition a triumph. A book to read, re-read, and, in this format, to savour lovingly like a classic vintage.' J Carter Brown, Director Emeritus, National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, Chairman, US Commission of Fine Arts, 1995 'Almost as well known as the Mona Lisa, Sir Ernst Gombrich's The Story of Art unites learning and pleasure.' Pierre Rosenberg, Président-Directeur, Musée du Louvre, Paris, 1995 'More people - artists, students and scholars alike - have been introduced to the world of fine art, in the last 45 years, though Ernst Gombrich's The Story of Art than through any other single book. It is a magnificent story, written by a great historian whose directness, suspicion of jargon and enthusiasm remain as infectious as ever. The new edition is excellent news for those of us who grew up with Gombrich's book - and even more excellent news for those who are about to.' Christopher Frayling, Professor of Cultural History, Royal College of Art, London, 1995 'The Story of Art was the first history of art which I read as a 19-year-old student. It was a revelation and I could not put it down. It pushed open the door on some of the greatest achievements of the human spirit. Written with love and scholarship, clarity and insight, it stands as a classic cornerstone in any appreciation of art.' Bridget Riley, artist, 1995 'I owe a great debt of gratitude to Ernst Gombrich. I read The Story of Art at school at the age of 15 with curiosity and growing compulsion. It planted in me a feeling of the centrality of art in human experience. His combination of breadth of knowledge and personal insight encouraged me to look at as much painting and sculpture as I could. I re-read the book recently and it is still as strong as ever.' Antony Gormley, sculptor (winner of the 1994 Turner prize), 1995 'Equation: Knowledge + Eye; Solution = Gombrich.' Henri Cartier-Bresson, photographer, 1995 'This book could change your life.' Jeremy Isaacs, General Director, Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, 1995 'Not just the most readable introduction to its subject, but a ravishing example of the book-maker's art.' The Times, reviewing the 16th edition, 25 September 1995
Love Does Thomas Nelson
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Now a New York Times Bestseller! As a college student he spent 16 days in the Pacific Ocean with five guys and a crate of canned meat. As a father he took his kids on a world tour to eat ice cream with heads of state. He made friends in Uganda, and they liked him so much he became the Ugandan consul. He pursued his wife for three years before she agreed to date him. His grades weren't good enough to get into law school, so he sat on a bench outside the Dean's office for seven days until they finally let him enroll. Bob Goff has become something of a legend, and his friends consider him the world's best-kept secret. Those same friends have long insisted he write a book. What follows are paradigm shifts, musings, and stories from one of the world's most delightfully engaging and winsome people. What fuels his impact? Love. But it's not the kind of love that stops at thoughts and feelings. Bob's love takes action. Bob believes Love Does. When Love Does, life gets interesting. Each day turns into a hilarious, whimsical, meaningful chance that makes faith simple and real. Each chapter is a story that forms a book, a life. And this is one life you don't want to miss. Light and fun, unique and profound, the lessons drawn from Bob's life and attitude just might inspire you to be secretly incredible, too. Endorsements: "If this book does not make your heart beat faster, book the next flight to Mayo Clinic!" --Bill Hybels, Senior Pastor, Willow Creek Community Church, Chairman, Willow Creek Association "Bob Goff is a one-man tsunami of grace, a hurricane of love. He doesn't just talk about change, he really is change, as Love Does chronicles in such a vivid way. Yet, Love Does doesn't leave you feeling like you want to celebrate its author, it awakens a sense deep within that you, too, have an outrageous role to play in God's unfolding story or rescue and repair." --Louie Giglio, Passion Conferences/Passion City Church "An interesting and compelling story (with Young Life roots) that ends with a practical challenge and punch: 'love does' and God can use you to do it!" --Denny Rydberg, President, Young Life "Every once in a while someone like Bob Goff shows up to remind us that some things matter a lot more than others. Love Does has a kind of 'north star' effect that will push you to refocus your life and energy on what is most significant. It doesn't just invite you to respond with your God-given potential, it invites you to become a part of what God can do beyond your potential." --Reggie Joiner, Founder and CEO of Orange "We liked the book a lot. Mostly, the balloons on the cover. The rest was pretty good too. Lots of stories about how God helps us." --Aedan, Asher and Skye Peterson ages 13, 12 and 9 "This may look like a book. It's not. It is an invitation to enter into the greatest adventure you have ever known-your life as it was meant to be lived. Hang on!" --Michael Hyatt, Author, Platform: Get Noticed in a Noisy World, MichaelHyatt.com "Bob's ability to love people brings contagious hope and inspiration wherever he goes. The power of love showcased in this book will surely touch the hearts and souls of many people. Read Love Does and find a friend in one the world's best hidden secrets, a person who shows how love can create connection and make a difference-even across oceans." --George Tsereteli, Deputy Chairman of the Parliament of Georgia (former Russian Republic)
