My Sentence Was a Thousand Years of Joy: Poems Perennial

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Readers have found Robert Bly's ghazals startling and new; they merge wildness with a beautiful formality. "My Sentence Was a Thousand Years" of Joy is Robert Bly's second book of ghazals. The poems have become more intricate and personal than they were in "The Night Abraham Called to the Stars," and the leaps even bolder. This book includes the already famous poem against the Iraq War, "Call and Answer": "Tell me why it is we don't lift our voices these days / And cry over what is happening." The poems are intimate and yet reach out toward the world: the paintings of Robert Motherwell, the intensity of flamenco singers, the sadness of the gnostics, the delight of high spirits and wit. Robert Bly is writing the best poems of his life, and this book reestablishes his position as one of the greatest poets of our era.

Solution Sets for Net Zero Energy Buildings Wilhelm Ernst & Sohn Verlag fur Architektur und...

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Net Zero-Energy Buildings have been the object of numerous studies in recent years as various countries have set this performance level as a long-term goal of their energy policies. This book presents a unique study of 30 NZEBs that have been constructed and have had their performance measured for at least 12 months. The study is based upon an International collaborative research initiated by the International Energy Agency. It is the first book to evaluate building strategies in houses, educational buildings and offices that have been demonstrated to work in practice. It examines how the design challenges of climate and building type have been addressed, and to what extent the various design approaches have been successful. This book presents convincing evidence that a careful re-thinking of conventional design norms can achieve a far greater performance benefit than is normally feasible. It identifies 'solution sets? that work at the whole building level and at the individual building design challenge level for each climate and building type. In doing so, the book provides guidance as to how to improve the design by learning from these cases. Unusually for a book of this type it has examples of buildings in what are conventionally labeled 'hot? and 'cold? climates. A simple process is proposed for the reader to commission the analysis of their own climate to assess not only the conventional measure of how hot or cold or humid it is, but also to assess its suitability to support other NZEB technical challenge solutions sets such as Daylight or Natural Ventilation or comfort based climate conditioning.

It took just four years in the spotlight for Jimi Hendrix to become an international cultural icon. The sheer impact and originality of his music and his unique mastery of the guitar placed him for ever amongst musical giants. But what of the man behind the public image? Modest and intensely private by nature, Jimi was shrouded in intrigue from the moment he first came into the public eye, and the mystery has only grown with time.§Much has been written about him by experts, fans and critics, some of it true and some of it not. He did, however, leave his own account of himself locked away like a Chinese puzzle in his many interviews, lyrics, writings, poems, diaries and even stage raps. Starting At Zero brings all these elements together in narrative form.§The result is an intimate, funny and poetic memoir - one that tells, for the first time, Jimi's own story as only he could tell it.

Poetry. "Of the many ways of knowing the world, Stacie Cassarino in her elegant and poignant first book of poems, ZERO AT THE BONE, reminds us of the primacy of the senses. She tells us 'our mouths try to get it right' or that the 'mouth of the trees' will swallow us whole, by which she means taste is the most direct authenticator of experience and also the most defenseless because it's instruments of lips and tongue are eager. As a result, her great pre-occupation is with the vulnerability of human relationships, but as the title of the book suggests, Cassarino is fearless in her explorations of the risks. She knows 'you've got to live like everything will hurt you'"--Michael Collier.

Emissions of CO2 have come to be regarded as the main factor in climate change in recent years, and how to control them has become a pressing issue. The problem cannot simply be labeled a technological one, however, because it is deeply involved with social and economic issues. Since 2008, the Global Center of Excellence (COE) program titled Energy Science in the Age of Global Warming Toward a CO2 Zero-Emission Energy System has been held at Kyoto University, Japan. The program aims to establish an international education and research platform to foster educators, researchers, and policy makers who can develop technologies and propose policies toward a zero-emission society by the year 2100. Setting out a zero-emission technology roadmap, Global COE promotes socioeconomic studies of energy, the study of new technologies for renewable energies, and research in advanced nuclear energy. A compilation of the lectures and presentations from the first symposium of Global COE held at Kyoto University, this book is intended to provide the impetus for the establishment of low carbon energy science to bring about harmony between mankind and the environment.

A Gilded Lapse of Time: Poems Farrar, Straus, Giroux

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This work of spiritual imagination appears seven years after Gjertrud Schnackenberg's second book, of which Nadine Gordimer wrote that it contains "poems that move me in a way that I don't really think I have experienced since I first read Rilke at sixteen or seventeen". A Gilded Lapse of Time is in three sections: the title sequence, surrounding a visit to Dante's tomb in Ravenna; "Crux of Radiance", a series of poems exploring the making and unmaking of the image of God in scenes from the Passion narrative; and "A Monument in Utopia", about the destruction of the Russian poet Osip Mandelstam at Stalin's hands. Setting legends of the Creation against history's record of catastrophe, setting acts of miraculous art-making against themes of God's world-making, these poems search out the relationship between poetry and history, the ways they haunt one another, and the guilt that poetry and history share in one another's unfolding. Her treatment of the themes of human and divine handiwork, of earthly and celestial love, of faith and refusal, of oblivion and remembrance, attains to an incandescent vision of the past as a realm that lies before rather than behind us.

Poems and Aphorisms Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Poems and Aphorisms: A Woodman's Musings The author of these poems was born in Wilmington, Mass., Nov. 3, 1824.When eleven years of age his parents removed to Amherst, N. H., and settled on the banks of the Souhegan river, one of the most lovely and romantic streams in New England. The word "Souhegan" in the Indian tongue means "crooked," and the stream does not belie its name. Here he learned to swim, fish, boat and trap; here he fell in love with Nature at a very early age. His "book" education consisted of a few short terms at the typical "Little Red Schoolhouse" of New England, and was finished prior to his 19th year. In mastering the "three R's" he had no time for grammar, and that was left out. In early life he learned the trade of house painter; but the greater part of his life has been spent in the forest, as wood-chopper, hunter and trapper. Was married in his 24th year, and still lives with the wife of his youth. In 1858 he left Amherst, and after two years residence in Stoneham, arrived at Mill Glen in the southerly part of Winchendon, Mass., where he now resides. These poems were composed for the most part while at work, or when walking; many of them coming as inspirations, with little effort on his part. Poems by Two Pals (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Poems by Two Pals Two reasons for the encouragement of the writing of poetry by college and university undergraduates at once occur to anyone who is interested in poetry: one is the evident fact that much excellent verse has been written, of late years, by undergraduates; the other is that, in a period when some literary forms bears the hall-marks of paganism and destructive radicalism, poetry is still, in the main, sensibly idealistic Not more than a score of years ago an undergraduate who sought to cultivate the poetic Muse wrote in privacy and secrecy. With a sense almost of guiltiness for pursuing something so irregularly outside of the curriculum, he breathed no word either of his achievements or his hopes to anyone, unless it were a fellow-student, and so he got little or no criticism that was at once mature and sympathetic. He never dreamt of publishing, unless it were in a college journal. Later, when "shades of the prison-house" began to close upon him, he became absorbed in new issues is life, forgot his earlier devotion, and possibly deprived the world of one more note of cheer, beauty, and optimism. All this has been changed. The writing of college verse, or rather of verse by college students, is rapidly coming into its own. Courses which provide a technical equipment are now given in most universities; criticism may be obtained for the asking; poets of recognized worth and achievement have even been brought into residence in some college communities to aid and inspire. The results have been gratifying, for poetry of genuine worth and beauty has in this way been produced. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. New Collected Poems BLOODAXE BOOKS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Tomas Transtromer won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Literature. He is Sweden's most important poet. This book includes all the poems he has written during the past fifty years, including those from the Bloodaxe Collected Poems of 1987, as well as three later collections, For Living and Dead (1989), The Sad Gondola (1996) and The Great Enigma (2004), and a prose memoir. In Sweden he has been called a 'buzzard poet' because his haunting, visionary poetry shows the world from a height, in a mystic dimension, but brings every detail of the natural world into sharp focus. His poems are often explorations of the borderland between sleep and waking, between the conscious and unconscious states. Transtromer was born in 1931 in Stockholm, where he grew up, but spent many long summers on the island of Runmaro in the nearby archipelago, evoking that landscape in his early work, which draws on the aesthetic tradition of Swedish nature poetry. His later poetry is more personal, open and relaxed, often reflecting his broad interests: travel, music, painting, archaeology and natural sciences. Many of his poems use compressed description and concentrate on a single distinct image as a catalyst for psychological insight and metaphysical interpretation. This acts as a meeting-point or threshold between conflicting elements or forces: sea and land, man and nature, freedom and control. Robin Fulton has worked with Tomas Transtromer on each of his collections as they have been published over many years, which has involved detailed exchanges between translator and poet on the meaning and music of numerous poems. There have been several translations as well as some books of so-called "versions" of Transtromer's poetry published in English, but Fulton's is the most authoritative and comprehensive edition of his poetry published anywhere.
