If Adrian Mole had a kid brother, he would be Tom Gates. "When my teacher, Mr Fullerman, doesn't have his BEADY EYES on me, I like to draw pictures and write stories about stuff, like when we had the worst holiday ever (camping sucks), and when my parents came to school for parents' evening (groan). And about how Marcus Meldrew is the most annoying boy in the world and how I don't want to sit next to him in class. All I want to do is get tickets to see the best band ever, DUDE3, when they come to town. It's not easy when I'm up against Delia, my weirdo big sister, and all my plans seem to get me into MAJOR TROUBLE ... again."

Tom Aikens is undoubtedly one of the UK's most talented chefs. His first restaurant, Tom Aikens, has received huge critical acclaim and was awarded a Michelin star a year after opening, sealing Tom's reputation as a culinary leading light. Tom also drummed up a further legion of fans with the opening of Tom's Kitchen - an informal all-day brasserie serving familiar and rustic dishes. It is this simple, homely style of cooking that Tom focuses on in his new cookbook. With over 200 easy recipes there's something for every occasion, from fast fixes, such as Peppered Steaks with Crushed Roast Garlic or Spiced Mullet Soup with Paprika and Chorizo; to twists on classic comfort food such as Ham and Mustard Macaroni, Toasted Sourdough with Aubergine, Basil and Sheep's Cheese and Lamb Rump with Rosemary Polenta and Parmesan. There's also a chapter for weekend cooking - pies, slow-roasts and hearty fare - and one on how to get creative with your leftovers. Other highlights are Tom's irresistible desserts: Prune and Armagnac Brioche Pudding, Caramel Mousse and Golden Syrup Sponge. The emphasis is on simplicity - recipes that can be prepared and cooked without any hassle or fuss, making cooking a pleasure rather than a chore. Beautifully illustrated with specially commissioned photography and a fresh, striking design, this is set to be a must-have cookery title.

The aim of the torturers, the tomb-like dungeon and symbols in Edgar Allan Poe's "The Pit and the Pendulum" GRIN Verlag

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Seminar paper from the year 2004 in the subject American Studies - Literature, printed single-sided, grade: 2 (B), Martin Luther University (Anglistics/American Studies), course: Edgar Allan Poe, language: English, abstract: Edgar Allan Poe s The Pit and the Pendulum was first published in The Gift: A Christmas and New Year's Present (1843) and revised for publication in The Broadway Journal of 17 May 1845. Although by this time the Spanish Inquisition was officially over, the American public was still interested in such topics. §During the nineteenth century a fascination with death evolved. People were interested in gothic novels, were fascinated by horror stories, they loved tales that included elements of magic, supernatural and torture. This morbid fascination with death received its most intensive literary treatment at the hands of Edgar Allan Poe. In The Pit and the Pendulum Poe uses all the elements people were fond of: adventure, supernatural, horror, death, being helpless etc. He moves the sensibility of the reader and evokes a certain emotional reaction.§In this term paper I am going to concentrate on how Poe achieved a certain effect with his story. First I will take a closer look at the prisoner s constant escapes, point out that most of these escapes are unbelievable and try to find out what the aim of his torturers might be. I will speculate on possibilities, what could have happened to the prisoner if he had made other choices during his stay in the dungeon. Then I will illustrate that there are certain parallels between a tomb and the dungeon in which the prisoner has to endure humiliation and agony, so the victim appears to be buried alive. Hope is the most important "property" he has, it seems as if nobody could take it away from him, and with the help of hope he survives his stay in the dungeon. Whether the story is based on a real or on a dream experience is pointed out shortly. Finally I will present and analyze the symbols that can be found in the story. These symbols underlie and develop the aforementioned theories further, it seems as if the prisoner is not only buried alive in a tomb, but he seems to be in hell already.§The individual elements of this short story can not be separated totally from each other, as these said elements often overlap. Sometimes, I feel, it is not possible to discuss something in full detail in one part of this work, as the same elements appear later again in another context, where the discussion can assume new and different aspects.

Tom Wilson - Ziggy ANDREWS & MCMEEL

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

As enduring as he is endearing, Tom Wilson's Ziggy celebrates four decades of bringing the funny to the funny pages inside Ziggy. A striking, giftable package to celebrate the 40th anniversary of this classic cartoon. Heralded by the New York Times as a "lovable, optimistic, funny-page favourite," Wilson's short, bald, barefoot, and pantless Everyman focuses on rainbows and silver linings rather than dwell on the clouds in the sky. With amusing and poignant reflections such as "Just when you find the key to success, somebody changes the lock" and "Patience is a virtue that carries a lot of wait," Ziggy offers hope in the face of adversity to more than 75 million devoted fans. Ziggy appears around the globe inside newspapers, greeting card envelopes, on T-shirts and calendars, and is frequently referenced in popular culture on shows ranging from Seinfeld and The Simpsons to 30 Rock and Jeopardy! As other strips come and go, Ziggy endures by staying relevant and adapting with the times in his own gently ruffled kind of way. Whether he's trying to figure out how to Facebook or file a complaint, inside a single panel, Ziggy comments on current events and technology, along with friendship and faith--all the while reminding us that we can't have life's rainbows without a little rain.
