Lincoln Birthday Service Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Lincoln Birthday Service: The Grand Army Hall and Memorial Association of Illinois, Sunday, February 1922, at 2: 30 P. M President Wright: The hour has arrived A for the commencement of our exercises. First, is the invocation by Dr. Sibley. Our Father, we thank Thee for the great memories of other days. We thank Thee for the heritage of this country that belongs to us and to our children. We thank Thee that the founders of this nation came as those who had a sense of conviction and faith in God and of God's destiny for them and for those who should come after them. We thank Thee that in the great time of struggle and of strife in all of this nations early maturity there came the necessity of meeting principle face to face, and it being true, we thank Thee that out of that great struggle there came a rebirth of liberty and an understanding of what is democracy and the true dedication and consecration of freedom. We thank Thee for all the great men who have been as beacon lights along the pathway which civilization has given to men. We thank Thee for the great men of our own nation and especially do we thank Thee, this day, for the one in whose memory we are met here. We thank Thee, that though he was born in so humble a fashion that his very humble birth makes it possible that there is no youth today who can say that he had a harder beginning than did Abraham Lincoln. Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... EDITORIAL PREFACE: DESPITE Freuds personal frankness in his writings he retained a deep inner reserve andso is likely to remain a man of mystery to future generations, who will greatly like to understand what manner of mind it was that was able unaided to penetrate so profoundly into its own secrets and into those of humanity. Any scraps of information, therefore, concerning his remarkable personality will be welcome, and the present book provides some of undoubted interest. Dr. Reik throws light on several aspects of Freuds personality, among which special attention may be called to the convincing evidence of Freuds fundamental hopefulness and the falsity of designating him a pessimist. The author would be the last to deny that the glimpses he gives us are but partial ones, and tha the does not pretend to paint a complete picture. He would further, I am sure, admit that the passage of years has brought an increasing risk of strengthening the subjective factor in some of his judgements and possibly also in his memories. Two little instances occur to me. He says that after Freuds serious illness the only thing noticeable was that he cleared his throat when he lectured. In fact, Freud never lectured after that date and only on one occasion did he ever even attend a meeting of the Society.Clearing the throat was a habit he had always had what the illness brought was the difficulty of articulation. The second instance concerns Dr. Reiks quoting Freuds prohibiting the celebration of his seventieth birthday with the remark, alluding to Karl Abrahams recent death, one cannot celebrate with a corpse in the house. In fact there was an important celebration of that birthday I went to Vienna myself to attend it. And Freuds birthday was in May, while Abraham had died in the previous December. If Dr. Reiks memory is correct about Freuds remark, then it is certainly not to be takenas an expression of conventional piety on Freuds part this would have been not in the least characteristic of himbut as an illustration of the way hewould snatch at any pretext to avoid, or at least minimise, a ceremonial occasion.

Excerpt from A Detective in Petticoats: A Comedy in Three Acts, for Female Characters Only Scene. - Mrs. Warrington's dressing-room. Mrs. Warrington seated at dressing-table R., dressed for a ball. Maid is doing her hair. Octavia on sofa L., front, reading, in tea-gown. Bookcase above her. Mrs. W. How slow you are to-night, Mary. It must be time to go. Octavia, do leave off reading just one moment, and see if Jack is ready. (Exit Octavia, still reading, R.)How can she be so absorbed in that awful book? Why, the words themselves make me so dizzy, that I have never found out whether they mean anything or not. Enter Octavia R. Oct. Jack says that the less often he is interrupted, the sooner he will be ready. (Seats herself again, reading.) Mrs. W. Why, what nonsense! (Runs to door R. and calls.) Jack, you declared you'd be dressed first, and now I've got to wait for you half an hour, I suppose, with nothing whatever to do. What? Well, why shouldn't I be excited? Besides, I'm not a bit excited to-night. I dare say it will be a great bore. We want to go early, so we can come home early, and receive the baroness. How soon will you be ready, Jack? Fifteen minutes? Oh, dear, do hurry! Who, I? Oh, I'm almost ready. (Runs back and sits.) Finish as quickly as you can, Mary. Oct. Don't you want me to read this chapter while you are waiting? Mrs. W. What a good idea! I was wondering how I ever could get time to finish it. I don't know how I could get along without you, Octavia, to keep me up with the movement of the age. There are so many things to think of, nowadays. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Ancestry and Descendants of Lieut. John Henderson Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Ancestry and Descendants of Lieut. John Henderson: Of Greenbrier County, Virginia, 1650 1900 It has been well said that "the present is founded upon the past, and the past is our only guide to the future. If we wish to see before us we must turn and look into the mirror behind us." Until recently the American people, except Virginians, have looked upon genealogy as foolishness, and any one who tried to know something of his great-grandfather as a snob. In later years there has been a decided change, but even yet there is a host of otherwise sensible people, who still hold to this opinion. They will say that it is "sheer nonsense" if you try to interest them in their own ancestry, and then perhaps will talk for hours about the grand ten or twelve generation pedigree of some favorite horse. And why is this pedigree of interest? Because they know that a horse may inherit certain qualities, and they produce his pedigree as a guarantee that he has, or ought to have them. If a horse is the better for having his ancestry known, why not so with a man? A horse does not, because he cannot realize the advantage of his genealogy; a man can, but as a rule does not do so. A nation composed of an aggregation of men is what its people make it, and not to know the composition of the people is an obstacle to the clear and true understanding of national history. So that the genealogies of the different families of a country have a high value to the student of history. Recognizing the many deficiencies of this little book, I send it forth with many misgivings as to how it may be received. But also knowing that it contains practically all of the facts relative to our family of Hendersons that are obtainable from the records preserved in this country, I think that it has sufficient value to warrant its existence. I feel that I am rendering a service to some future historian of the family by gathering together these records and verified traditions of our forefathers ere they are misplaced and perhaps lost in the passing of the older generations. Excerpt from Progress Attributed to the Laboring Classes: A Poem Delivered Before the Worcester County Mechanics Association, March 3d, 1853 Progress: A Poem. I've no excuse for being here, And what, to you, may seem still worse, Can give no reasons why I choose To clothe my humble theme in verse; Except it be for fashion's sake, For now-a-days I trust you know That prose is being laid aside, While softer numbers gently flow. The school-girl of a dozen years Must spend her hours of leisure time In writing down her youthful thoughts, Regardless of the sense or rhyme; Yet some in this progressive age, Whom Nature ever deigns to bless, Have taken up the harp and pen And written couplets for the press. Each Miss must have a fancy book - I think the Album is its name, And all good friends, both young and old Contribute nonsense to the same; Then tell what wonders they have done, And with a look and air sublime Show how they have relinquished prose, And now are wading into rhyme. Excerpt from Stories by English Authors The 10:15 train glided from Paddington May 7, 1847. In the left compartment of a certain first-class carriage were four passengers; of these two were worth description. The lady had a smooth, white, delicate brow, strongly marked eyebrows, long lashes, eyes that seemed to change colour, and a good-sized, delicious mouth, with teeth as white as milk. A man could not see her nose for her eyes and mouth; her own sex could, and would have told us some nonsense about it. She wore an unpretending grayish dress, buttoned to the throat with lozenge-shaped buttons, and a Scottish shawl that agreeably evaded colour. She was like a duck, so tight her plain feathers fitted her, and there she sat, smooth, snug, and delicious, with a book in her hand and a soup$on of her wrist just visible as she held it. Her opposite neighbour was what I call a good style of man, the more to his credit since he belonged to a corporation that frequently turns out the worst imaginable style of young men. He was a cavalry officer, aged twenty-five. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Fleurs-de-Lys Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Fleurs-De-Lys: A Book of French Poetry Freely Translated Into English Verse With an Introduction and Notes In a western suburb of London, at no great distance from the coal-yards contiguous to the railway sidings of Paddington Station, may be seen a house bearing this motto in large letters above its doorway: "Ce qui doit ętre sera." "What must be must," I rendered it on first passing, reading its message as that of a fatalist and stoic thinker. And then doubt assailed me. "What ought to be shall be," I varied it, at once turning its author into one not at all resigned to things as they are, but sworn heroically to make the right prevail. But further deliberation revealed the rightness of my first impression, for the second interpretation would need devrait in place of doit to justify it. This example, however, may stand as an illustration of the truth that, in translation, it is a small thing to know, etymologically, the literal equivalent of foreign words, the important thing being to understand their intention, and to render their effect in your own way. "Il s'est brulé le cerveau" means "He blew out his brains," and to insist that bruler means burn is only to make nonsense of the phrase by suggesting that some one either worried himself into a brain-fever or worked himself into a passion. Atlantic Monthly, Vol. 42 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Atlantic Monthly, Vol. 42: A Magazine of Literature, Science, Art, and Politics Nothing in actual life can come so near the experience of Rip Van Winkle as to revisit war scenes after a dozen years of peace. Alice's adventures in Wonderland, when she finds herself dwarfed after eating the clover leaf, do not surpass the sense of insignificance that comes over any one who once wore uniform when he enters, as a temporary carpet-bagger, some city which he formerly ruled or helped to rule with absolute sway. An ex-commander of colored troops has this advantage, that the hackmen and longshore-men may remember him if nobody else does; and he at once possesses that immense practical convenience which comes only from a personal acquaintance with what are called the humbler classes. In a strange place, if one can establish relations with a black waiter or a newspaper correspondent, all doors fly open. The patronage of the great is powerless in comparison. When I had last left Jacksonville, Florida, in March, 1864, the town was in flames: the streets were full of tongues of fire creeping from house to house; the air was dense with lurid smoke. Our steamers dropped rapidly down the river, laden to the gunwale with the goods of escaping inhabitants. The black soldiers, guiltless of all share in the flames, were yet excited by the occasion, recalled their favorite imagery of the Judgment Day, and sang and shouted without ceasing. I never saw a wilder scene. Fourteen years after, the steamboat came up to the same wharf, and I stepped quietly ashore into what seemed a summer watering-place: the roses were in bloom, the hotel verandas were full of guests, there were gay shops in the street, the wharves were covered with merchandise and with people. The delicious air was the same, the trees were the same; all else was changed. The earth-works we had built were leveled and overgrown; there was a bridge at the ford we used to picket; the church in whose steeple we built a lookout was still there, but it had a new tower, planned for peaceful purposes only. The very railroad along which we skirmished almost daily was now torn up, and a new track entered the town at a different point. I could not find even the wall which one of our men clambered over, loading and firing, with a captured goose between his legs. Only the blue sky and the soft air, the lovely atmosphere of Florida, remained; the distant line of woods had the same outlook, and when the noon guns began to be fired for Washington's birthday I could hardly convince myself that the roar was not that of our gunboats, still shelling the woods as they had done so many years before. Unpublished David Ogilvy PROFILE BOOKS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

First collected by his devoted family and colleagues as a 75th birthday present, The Unpublished David Ogilvy collects a career's worth of public and private communications - memos, letters, speeches, notes and interviews - from the 'Father of Advertising' and founder of Ogilvy & Mather. Still fizzing with energy and freshness more than 25 years after it was first published, its success outside the private circle of friends and colleagues it was created for was, in the words of one of its editors: 'because so often he spoke out on important matters long before the crowd caught up to him; because all of what he says, he says so well; because so little of what he says in the book had ever before appeared in print'. It includes The Theory and Practice of Selling the AGA Cooker, described by Fortune magazine as 'the finest sales instruction manual ever written', and an interview in which he makes disclosures that even long-standing associates had never heard before. This is a business book unlike any other: a straightforward and incisive look at subjects such as salesmanship, management and creativity, presented in his trademark crisp prose. Whether carefully prepared for a lecture or as a private joke to a friend, his writing always underlines the importance of the rule, 'it pays an agency to be imaginative and unorthodox'.
