Making of Modern Intellectual Property Law BERTRAMS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

One of the common themes in recent public debate has been the law's inability to accommodate the new ways of creating, distributing and replicating intellectual products. In this book the authors argue that in order to understand many of the problems currently confronting the law, it is necessary to understand its past. This is its first detailed historical account. In this book the authors explore two related themes. First, they explain why intellectual property law came to take its now familiar shape with sub-categories of patents, copyright, designs and trade marks. Secondly, the authors set out to explain how it is that the law grants property status to intangibles. In doing so they explore the rise and fall of creativity as an organising concept in intellectual property law, the mimetic nature of intellectual property law and the important role that the registration process plays in shaping intangible property.

To Steal a Book is an Elegant Offense Stanford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This study examines the law of intellectual property in China from imperial times to the present. It draws on history, politics, economics, sociology, and the arts, and on interviews with officials, business people, lawyers, and perpetrators and victims of "piracy". The author asks why the Chinese, with their early bounty of scientific and artistic creations, are only now devising legal protection for such endeavours and why such protection is more rhetoric than reality on the Chinese mainland. In the process, he sheds light on the complex relation between law and political culture in China. The book goes on to examine recent efforts in the People's Republic of China to develop intellectual property law, and uses this example to highlight the broader problems with China's programme of law reform.

Nanotechnology PEARSON

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Inside the Emerging Multibillion-Dollar Nanotechnology Industry Suddenly, nanotechnology isn't science fiction or mere theory: It's becoming one of the world's fastest-growing, highest-impact industries. In Nanotechnology: Science, Innovation, and Opportunity, the field's leading experts offer an up-to-the-minute briefing on where the industry stands now, how it will unfold over the coming decade, and how it will impact you. Edited by a key industry advisor, this book covers the latest in nanotech science, technology, and applications. You'll meet the key players, and discover nanotech at work in fields ranging from drug delivery to energy efficiency. Here are the opportunities, the challenges, and the implications: all you need to know about today's nanotech business--and tomorrow's. Coverage includes * How the convergence of nanoscale science foreshadows revolutionary societal change * Technical and business obstacles that still challenge the industry * Lessons from the early "gold rush" days of biotech: managing the hype * Nanotech as disruptive innovation: implications for investors and venture capitalists * The evolving roles of entrepreneurs, universities, and the U.S. government * Key application areas: materials, microelectronics, sensors, energy, and beyond * Bio-Nano-Information fusion: the potential to transform medicine * Relevant patent law and intellectual property issues * The ethics of nanotechnology "A fascinating look at the art and science of nanotechnology. Hold on to your hats, the world is about to change big time...A comprehensive look at nanotechnology from the perspective of science, investment, IP, and business development with a healthy dose of vision for good measure. First-rate authors with an excellent presentation of the material. Buy this book." --David Bishop, Ph.D., V.P. of Nanotechnology Research, Bell Labs, Lucent Technologies "An absolute must-read for every technology sector being impacted by nanotechnology. Lost Secrets of the Sacred Ark THORSONS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

New in paperback by Laurence Gardner, the bestselling author of Bloodline of the Holy Grail. From the tombs of pharaonic Egypt, to the laboratories of modern science, comes the extraordinary account of gravity defiance and teleportation in the ancient world, and amazing revelations about the past power and future significance of the sacred Ark. * The sacred Ark of the Covenant, created from a legendary substance, is the source of one of the deepest mysteries of the Western world. No reason is given in the Bible as to why the Ark of the Covenant was so richly contrived, and no explanation exists of its alleged awesome and deadly powers. * Laurence Gardner has accessed Rosicrucian archives in liaison with eminent nuclear physicists to reveal where the ark is, what it is, and how this lost secret of the distant past, has led to the phenomenal new science of space-time manipulation. * Gardner's controversial research reveals that the secret of the pharaohs' rite of passage to the Afterlife was due to an amazing magical substance, which was directly associated with the pyramids and the biblical Ark of the Covenant. * This substance, now known to be superconductive monatomic gold, became know as the Philosophers' Stone, while in today's corridors of quantum mechanics its attributes are classified as 'the most remarkable physical property in the universe'.

Race, Revolution, and the Struggle for Human Rights in Zanzibar Ohio University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Zanzibar has had the most turbulent postcolonial history of any part of the United Republic of Tanzania, yet few sources have emerged that explain the reasons why. The current political impasse in the islands is a contest primarily over the question of whether to accept and sustain the Zanzibari Revolution of 1964. Defenders of the revolution speak the language of African nationalism and aspire to unify the majority of Zanzibar through the politics of race. Their opponents claim, instead, that the revolution undermined the islands' cosmopolitan cultural heritage and espouse the language of human rights. Ali Sultan Issa was an early Zanzibari nationalist. As a minister in the first revolutionary government he became one of Zanzibar's most controversial figures, responsible for some of the government's most radical policies. Later imprisoned, he has reemerged as one of Zanzibar's most successful property developers. Seif Shariff Hamad came of age during the revolution, becoming disenchanted with its broken promises and excesses. Having served in Tanzania's ruling party, he is now a leading figure in Zanzibar's opposition. Together these two memoirs trace Zanzibar's post independence trajectory and reveal how Zanzibaris continue to dispute their revolutionary heritage and remain divided over issues of ethnic identity. These memoirs, edited with an introduction by G. Thomas Burgess, will provide scholars and teachers with highly readable first-person narratives in which two African post independence leaders describe their public and personal achievements, conflicts, failures, and tragedies. They will give students and scholars unique access to life, culture, and politics of Zanzibar.

Jeff Guinn - Manson Simon & Schuster

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

After more than forty years, Charles Manson continues to mystify and fascinate us. One of the most notorious criminals in American history, Manson and members of his mostly female commune killed nine people, including pregnant actress Sharon Tate. Now, drawing on new information, bestselling author Jeff Guinn tells the definitive story of how this ordinary delinquent became a murderer. Manson helps us understand what obsessed him and, most terrifying of all, how he managed to persuade others to kill. Guinn interviewed Manson's sister and cousin, neither of whom has ever previously cooperated with an author. Childhood friends, cellmates, and even some members of the Manson Family have provided new information about Manson's life. Guinn has made discoveries about the night of the Tate murders, answering unresolved questions, such as why one person on the property was spared. There are even photographs of Manson's childhood and youth that have never previously been seen outside private family albums. Putting Manson in the context of his times, the turbulent end of the Sixties, Guinn shows how Manson represented the dark side of a generation. He came to Los Angeles hoping to get a recording contract, and the murders were directly related to his musical ambitions, although he cloaked them in a bizarre race-war theory. He was, in the words of one person who knew him, just like many other rock star wannabes-except that he was a killer.

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Learn how to use typography on the web Typography has long been an invaluable tool for communicating ideas and information. Words and characters once impressed in clay, written on papyrus, and printed with ink are now manifest in pixels of light. Today's web typographers can help their readers find, understand, and connect with the words, ideas, and information they seek. Thus, legibility and readability are the foundations for the typographic theories and practice covered in Typographic Web Design. You'll learn how to choose fonts, organize information, create a system of hierarchy, work with tabular information, create a grid, apply a typographic system across multiple pages, and build a font library. Each chapter provides time-tested typography rules to follow (modified for the web), explains why they work, when to break them, and offers the opportunity to test the rules with hands-on exercises in HTML and CSS. If you don't know HTML and CSS, Typographic Web Design provides a walk-through for each lesson, showing you how to plan and write syntax. Readers are sure to come away with an understanding of typographic principles, as well as the HTML and CSS skills needed to implement them on the web. Typographic Web Design *Applies decades of typographic theory and practice (e.g., how to choose a font) directly to web design (e.g., how to use the @font-face property in CSS). *Clearly explains all typographic rules presented, providing examples that contrast successful and less successful typographic solutions. *Is written for visual thinkers. The book is supported by a web site with solutions, critiques, and revisions for each lesson. Laura Franz is an Associate Professor of Design at University of Massachusetts Dartmouth, where she has taught web typography for 12 years. She has presented lectures and workshops on Typographic Web Design, and has written a course on the topic for
