Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Jesus Story in the Twenty-Seven Books That Changed the World Peter Lang Publishing Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The Jesus Story has been told for almost 2000 years, and a good share of the time told differently, depending on who was telling and where and when. This book targets on the earliest telling that occurred from the time of the death of Jesus to the middle of the second century - the twenty-seven books of the New Testament being the primary record we have for the telling of that early story. This book begins with the tellings in the gospels - from Jerusalem to Rome. It then examines the story as the telling shifts from charismatic, free-wheeling preaching to the orderliness of church establishment. Finally there is a report on how the early tellers told of the coming of the end of time.

Following Rivers of Gold and The Golden Age, World Without End is the conclusion of a magisterial three-volume history of the Spanish Empire by Hugh Thomas, its foremost worldwide authority World Without End tells the story of life in a conquered territory that stretched from Cuba to Peru, and of the final conquests of the greatest empire that the world had then seen since the fall of Rome 1,000 years before. By the time of Philip II's death - and after his startling decision, made in his final years, not to invade China - the attentions of the colonists, clergymen, sailors, soldiers and officials of the Spanish Empire were no longer turned to its expansion: their focus, instead, became its management. These were the decades in which modern history began. Hugh Thomas received the Calvo Serer, Boccacio, and Nonino prizes in Italy in 2009, and in 2008 was made a Commandeur de L'Ordre des Arts et Lettres in France. His many books include his classic history of The Spanish Civil War (winner, the Somerset Maugham Award); The Suez Affair; Cuba: The Pursuit of Freedom; An Unfinished History of the World; The Slave Trade; and the two previous volumes in this trilogy, Rivers of Gold and The Golden Age.

Island at the End of the World REAKTION BOOKS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Famed for its breathtaking isolation, Easter Island was a verdant South-Sea idyll when a small canoeful of Polynesians arrived in c. AD 700. Centuries later the island's statues were famous throughout the world. This book presents a comprehensive history of Easter Island told by a writer who is intimately familiar with the island, its people and their extraordinary story. When voyaging in the South Pacific became far less widespread around 1500, Easter Islanders became stranded on their desert-like isle, and were forced to adapt to survive. The first European visitors, in 1722, encountered a people thriving in total isolation, surrounded by huge architectural platforms of fitted stones topped by hundreds of monolithic busts. Subsequent intruders brought trade, disease, violence, and the Easter Islanders adapted to this change, too, through cultural re-invention: new leaders, new rituals, new gods. Steven Roger Fischer relates the compelling history of this unique region: how wars, smallpox and the Great Death decimated the island, how Catholic missionaries arrived in 1866 to relieve the suffering of the dying people, and how a despotic Frenchman claimed the island for himself, but who was then killed by the remaining islanders a population of only 111. The author also examines the modern history of the island, its colonization and annexation by Chile, and its peaceful but insistent civil rights movement in 1964-65. Today, the population has increased, as has tourism of the island from 2,000 visitors in 1991 to 20,000 in 2001 and continues to be managed by the indigenous Rapanui people. Foreign interest in Easter Island has never been so keen, and this book is a much-needed history of this little-known but remarkable island.

Journey's End: A Biography of a Classic War Play OBERON BOOKS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

R C Sherriff's Journey's End is a syllabus text and the most famous play about World War One. First staged in 1928, this book tells the story of what went into the making of this extraordinary and powerful trench drama. It outlines Sherriff's career from humble insurance clerk to infantry officer and his unforgettable 10 months on the western front before he was invalided home, lucky to be alive. Sherriff poured into his first professional play his personal experience of living in a front-line dug-out. Using his diary and letters home, the book charts his emotional life under fire and relates it directly to the play, its events and its characters. It also tells the story of Journey's End's incredible box office success across the world, a triumph which made its shy young author famous overnight. Taking in the history of the show right up to the most recent productions, Journey's End: A Biography of a Classic War Play is a meditation on Journey's End's achievement as a war document, its fascination for audiences when it was first staged and its continuing grip on theatre-goers and students today.

Three Choices for a Superpower Penguin UK

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Geopolitical thought leader Ian Bremmer issues a clarion call to America: redefine your place in the world, or the world will define it for you America's identity abroad has long been defined by the second World War and years of Cold War struggle. But the new America has changed; its role and identity are in flux - and with them, the global balance of power. In Three Choices for a Superpower, president and founder of the Eurasia Group, Ian Bremmer, calls for a completely new definition of America as a superpower - one that adheres to distinct priorities and values. He outlines the three choices facing the new America: Be independent: America does not have an endless supply of blood and finances to spend on other nations. Rather, America will fare much better if it devotes its energies and resources to rebuilding strength from within. Moneyball: America cannot afford every foreign fight in support of American values, but they must defend their interests wherever they are threatened. They must make tough decisions intelligently, with an open admission of America's limitations. Be indispensable: To think that America can operate autonomously from the rest of the world is not only ignorant but also extremely dangerous. The world relies on American leadership, and America has international interests - they must continue their role as an indispensable nation and remain actively involved abroad. As the 2016 presidential election approaches, America needs to define its responsibilities, opportunities, and most importantly, its limits. A foreign policy divided against itself cannot stand; as the world's greatest superpower, America must choose which path it will follow into the future. Ian Bremmer is the president and founder of the Eurasia Group, the leading global political risk research and consulting firm. He has published ten books including the national bestsellers The End of the Free Market and Every Nation For Itself. He is an active public speaker and a contributor to the Financial Times and Reuters, among others.

Paradigm Shift: A History of The Three Principles CCB Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This is a brief history in three parts of a new paradigm understanding called The Three Principles, and its dissemination, which was uncovered by Sydney Banks in the 1970s and very gradually and silently crept into the consciousness of perhaps hundreds of thousands of people, touching and changing lives worldwide. It all began when one man, Sydney Banks, in one moment of time, had a profound experience of spiritual enlightenment. A small circle of people gathered around him on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia to listen to his wisdom. Within a few years two mental health professionals became profoundly touched by Syd's teachings, among them George Pransky. Part I of this book is an extensive interview with Dr. Pransky, who began to create an entirely new, inside-out psychological paradigm. It began to spread little by little, one person at a time, solidly through individual insights and slowly began to infiltrate the fields of mental health, prevention, corrections, business, education, coaching and many more. It began to spread around the world. Part II is a historical chronology of what transpired. Part III consists of brief write-ups of a few of the important historical events that for an extended period of time changed mainstream systems. How difficult it must have been to create an entirely new psychology from the formless, spiritual nature of which Syd Banks spoke, and for which he, himself, even struggled to find words! Furthermore, this became a completely new psychology--a true paradigm shift to the inside-out--which flew in the face of the traditional psychology accepted not only by the powers that be but by millions of people around the world who studied it and practice it. And all this from one man's enlightenment experience in one moment of time, which gradually rippled out affecting one person at a time, who then affected others, then others, changing lives along the way, and it still grows on into unimaginable futures. About the Author: Jack Pransky, Ph.D. is founder/director of the Center for Inside-Out Understanding and an internationally recognized trainer, coach, counselor and consultant who since 1992 has been studying and teaching "The Three Principles," an inside-out, spiritually-based model and approach. Dr. Pransky authored the books, Somebody Should Have Told Us! (2011/2006); Prevention from the Inside-Out (2003); Prevention: The Critical Need (2001/1991); Parenting from the Heart (2012/2000/1997); Modello: A Story of Hope for the Inner City and Beyond (2011/1998), and co-authored What Is a Thought? (A Thought is A Lot) children's book and Healthy Thinking/Feeling/Doing from the Inside-Out prevention curriculum for middle school students (2000). Jack has worked in the field of prevention since 1968 in a wide variety of capacities. In 2001 his book, Modello received the Martin Luther King Storyteller's Award for the book best exemplifying King's vision of "the beloved community," and in 2004 Jack won the Vermont Prevention Pioneer's Award.

Parade's End Penguin

Booker Prize-winner Julian Barnes introduces Ford Madox Ford's masterpiece "Parade's End" - now a major new BBC/HBO TV adaptation - in this reissued "Penguin Modern Classics" edition. Starring Benedict Cumberbatch as Christopher Tietjens, Rebecca Hall as his wife Sylvia and also featuring Rupert Everett, Carey Mulligan, Roger Allam and Miranda Richardson, this lavish production from a screenplay by the legendary playwright Tom Stoppard brings to life for the first time one of the twentieth century's most significant novels. A masterly novel of destruction and regeneration, "Parade's End" follows the story of aristocrat Christopher Tietjens as his world is shattered by the First World War. Tracing the psychological damage inflicted by battle, the collapse of England's secure Edwardian values - embodied in Christopher's wife, the beautiful, cruel socialite Sylvia - and the beginning of a new age, epitomized by the suffragette Valentine Wannop, "Parade's End" is an elegy for both the war dead and the passing of a way of life. Ford Madox Ford (1873-1939) served with the British army in World War I, an experience that was to form the basis of his novel "Parade's End", published in four parts from 1924 to 1928. He wrote over eighty books, including "The Good Soldier (1915)", and divided his time between England, France and America. Julian Barnes' most recent novel is "The Sense of An Ending", for which he won the 2012 Man Booker prize. His other books include "Flaubert's Parrot, "A History of the World in 10 1/2 Chapters" and "Arthur and George". "The finest English novel about the Great War." (Malcolm Bradbury). "The best novel by a British writer...It is also the finest novel about the First World War. It is also the finest novel about the nature of British society." (Anthony Burgess). "There are not many English novels which deserve to be called great: "Parade's End" is one of them." (W.H. Auden). "The English prose masterpiece of the time." (William Carlos Williams).

CARAVAN: THE STORY Of THE MIDDLE EAST by CARLETON S. COON. FOREWORD: No MAN COULD HOPE to draw together the various fields from which the materials of this book are derived if he were a scholar in any one of them. No one could feel less scholarly than I do. This becomes particularly evident when the subject of Arabic transliteration arises, as it always does in forewords to books on the Middle East. I have before me the handiwork of Hitti, Gibb, and Calverley, three men whose erudition and integrity are of the highest order, and yet I cannot find complete agreement among them. Take the word for judge. Hitti spells it qadi, Gibb adlf and Calverley qadl. At this point the lay reader may exclaim, So what? but the lay reader does not review these books. To the myopic dotter of i's and Crosser of t's, a dot under a consonant or a macron over a vowel are matters of utmost importance. The presence or absence of a dot under the k will distinguish between the word for heart and that for dog. Only a heartless dog would countenance such confusion. To avoid it I sought the aid of a most kindly and scholarly gentle man who has much more to offer than spelling: Dr. E. E. Calverley of the Hartford Seminary Foundation, editor of the Muslim World, a man of profound erudition and wisdom, as well as long editorial experience. He read the manuscript from beginning to end. His polite but firmly expressed corrections appeared on many pages, and not one of them has been ignored. He has grasped my arm on the brink of many a pitfall, theological and historical as well as ortho graphic. If despite his efforts I may be shown to have fallen in here and there, please be assured that I have not drawn him with me. For a scholar of his stature to have had the grace to bother with this work places him beyond the level of possible contamination. ....
