Phytochemical Analysis of Maerua Pseudopetalosa LAP Lambert Academic Publishing

Medicinal plants played an important role, with "God" blessing, in the preservation of human health. Maerua pseudopetalosa is traditionally used as cough remedy and cure for tumors in some parts of Sudan. Accordingly the needs arose for a scientific pursuit for identification of natural bioactive compounds from the plant. This is done through evaluation of its phytochemical compounds, antimicrobial activity and toxicity. The techniques employed in the fractionation and identification of the compounds are based on chromatographic and spectrometric data. Successfully it became evident that some of its chemical constituents may provide a new potential source of natural anticancer agent(s). A clear indication is the presence of proline-N-methyl-butyl ester, which is a derivative of free proline. The latter was suggested to inhibit breast cancer development.

History of Brown University 1764-1914 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The History of Brown University 1764-1914 This history of Brown University is intended chiefly for its graduates, and some of the contents will have little interest for other readers. The effort has been to portray the university in all its aspects - not merely as a gallery of academic worthies, or an educational experiment station, or a stage where men now grave and reverend disported themselves in thoughtless youth, or an athletic and social club, but as all these and more. Even to graduates, therefore, some parts of the narrative will appeal less strongly than others; but it seemed more essential to give a just account of the university as a whole than to rivet the attention of every reader on every page. The book is based almost entirely on original sources, a list of which will be found in the Appendix. In quotations from these the spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc., have been reproduced as accurately as possible: this method helps the reader to get the flavor of times past, and is peculiarly worth while in the history of an educational institution because it illustrates the use of English by Corporation, Faculty, and students. It is a pleasure to record my thanks for aid received from graduates and friends of the university. Professor William MacDonald, the Rev. Dr. Henry M. King, and Professor Walter G. Everett, of the Committee on the Academic Celebration, read the manuscript and made helpful criticisms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Taming of the Sioux (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Taming of the Sioux No historian of prominence should presume to ask the public to take his work as the last word on the subject which it treats. There is bound to be some one who will find inaccuracies and deficiencies, and the whole work may be condemned on account of them. There never was a history written that is absolutely correct, so I suppose mine must be a little off on a few trivial matters. A deep student of the ethnology, phonology, psychology and anthropology of the Sioux may (I say may advisedly) find these defects. To him I offer no apologies, he has enough ologies now, and I don't wish to burden him with more of them. History is essentially didactical, indeed it is, and we soon tire of its prosiness, its unpicturesque display of data and long-winded statistics. However, there are some individuals who are ultra-pedantic, and to whom nothing appeals but what is strictly utilitarian. To such persons I commend certain parts of this work, while to the others - the great majority - the balance of it may prove entertaining. The absence of humor I greatly deplore, for it just seems that I cannot think up anythin' funny. But the reader may find a great deal to laugh about after all, if he is inclined to be critical. The old timers, God bless 'em, always take an important part in an historical work. But they seldom agree with each other. There is a psychological reason for this, as there is for most anything we do not clearly understand. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Letters of Cicero, Vol. 2 of 4 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Letters of Cicero, Vol. 2 of 4: Whole the Whole Extant Correspondence in Chronological Order The letters in this volume (April, B.C. 51-June, B.C. 49) find Cicero on the point of starting to his province of Cilicia, in which he was to succeed Appius Claudius Puleher, the elder brother of his old enemy Publius Clodius. The circumstances in which he had been, against his will, constrained to undertake this duty, have been noticed in the introduction to the first volume. From the very first he disliked the idea of it, and especially shrank from a prolonged absence from Rome. The district known as Cilicia is a narrow country between Mount Taurus and the sea, falling naturally into two divisions, near the city of Soli - on the west Cilicia Aspera, on the east Cilicia Campestris, separated from the province of Syria by Mount Amanus. The Romans had first been brought into connexion with Cilicia Aspera in their efforts to put down the piracy in the Eastern Mediterranean in the year B.C. 103. For some years it was a provincia in the sense of a military command, rather than an organized province. But this command was held by a number of able men who had gradually reduced it to the regular form of a Roman province, adding to it various neighbouring districts. Its extent and organized administration, as found by Cicero, dated from the Asian settlement of Pompey, after the Mithridatic war in B.C. 64. It now consisted of five parts, Cilicia, Aspera and Campestris, Pisidia, Isauria, Lycaonia. But to these had been added, temporarily, three "dioceses" in Phrygia - Laodicea, Apamea, and Synnada - and the island of Cyprus, after its reduction by Cato in B.C. 58. The province thus contained a population some of whom, not long before, had been addicted to piracy and brigandage. Elements of Coordinate Geometry Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Elements of Coördinate Geometry: In Three Parts This book contains some matter not heretofore found in works upon Analytical Geometry. As it is designed as a text-book, care has been taken to separate the different subjects so that they may be studied advantageously, each by itself. The Cartesian system will naturally, if not necessarily, be studied first, for it is not only the most common, but is the leading system used in the Calculus. The matter pertaining to the conic sections is considerably condensed, compared with most other works which treat of the subject. This has been accomplished by treating of the several curves under one head when discussing a property which is common to all of them. By this arrangement we trust that some time will be saved to the student in this part of the work, and thus enable him to give more time to advanced portions of the subject. The subject of Quaternions is treated in the most elementary manner, and the examples are of the simplest kind, the object being to explain and illustrate the principles and the character of the operations without taxing the ingenuity of the student in the mere solution of problems. One cannot form a correct judgment of the power of this analysis from these examples, but to attempt to explain its higher processes would be equivalent to excluding it from our courses of study. If the presentation here made of the subject succeeds in creating an interest in it, and of establishing a correct foundation for its future study, all will be accomplished that was intended. The English works upon the subject are not numerous. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Outline Grammar of the Kachari (Bara) Language as Spoken in District Darrang, Assam Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Outline Grammar of the Kachári (Bĺrĺ) Language as Spoken in District Darrang, Assam: With Illustrative Sentences, Notes, Reading Lessons, and a Short Vocabulary The following brief sketch of the Kachari language as spoken in this district (Darrang) has been put together under many difficulties and disadvantages, as the writer has been able to give to its compilation little more than mere scraps and fragments of his time. Much of the Accidence, in particular, was drawn up in Ms, some two years since, and should have been re-written before publication, had the pressure of other duties given opportunity for so doing; for it was put together at various times and in different places, and the whole suffers from a want of re-arrangement and expansion. This is especially the case with the section which treats of Verbs, and the peculiar way hi which they are compounded with other parts of speech; i.e., with nouns, adjectives, and other verbal roots. There are many points of interest, too, in the language, e.g., the exact use and force of the tenses, which must still be regarded as open questions, and with regard to which we shall not perhaps be in a position to speak with anything like authority until we know something of the Grammar of the many closely cognate languages. But as there seems little prospect of any great additions being made to our knowledge in this direction for some time to come, it seems best on the whole to allow the following pamphlet to appear at once, with all its obvious and manifold imperfections. Enamines as Intermediates in the Heterocyclic Synthesis LAP Lambert Academic Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The aim of this book is to synthesize some novel heterocyclic compounds starting from easily obtainable enamines. Therefore, the work have been divided into two parts; the first one is the synthesis of acryclic enamine, namely 2-cyano-3-(dimethylamino)-N-(4-phenylthiazol-2-yl)acrylamide and study its behavior towards some different nucleophiles to attain polyfunctionally substituted heterocyclic system of potential pharmaceutically interest. The second part is the synthesis of aminopyrazole derivative which has a latent enamine skeleton and study its reactivity towards various types of 1,3-biselectophilic reagents to obtain annulated pyrazole derivatives which have expected pharmacological activity. The methods of synthesis and the synthetic mechanisms of the aforementioned reactions were well presented and the structures of these compounds were assessed by analytical and spectral data.

(Sole Executor); To Be Sold at Auction, Monday and Tuesday Evenings, May 2d and 3d, 1904 He entered Dickinson College, Carlisle, Pa., in 1850, graduated Bachelor of Arts in 1854, and received his Master's degree in 1858. His Alma Mater conferred the Doctorate in Divinity in 1866, and Princeton University bestowed the same honor in 1896, Indiana Asbury University (de Pauw) and Dickinson College each gave him the Doctorate of Laws in 1877. His tastes for history and linguistics became more pronounced underthe fostering care of able and discriminating teachers during his college course, and his conviction that he should prepare himself for the Christian ministry became a settled one, though involv ing an abandonment of the law, to which his friends and his own thought had for some time pointed him. After graduation he taught, first in a common school for a few months at Greensboro, Maryland, and then for nearly two years in the Hedding Literary Institute, which ran a brief career of about four years in Ashland, N. Y., among the Catskills. His department was Latin and Greek, with some occasional work in English and a few lectures. One of the lady teachers of this school was Miss Kate E. La Monte, in charge of the ornamental branches. In 1859 she became Mrs. Hurst. John Burroughs was one of his pupils in Ashland. To equip himself both in body and mind more thoroughly for his life work, he spent a part of two years, 1856 and 185 7, in Europe, dividing his time between attendance upon lectures at the Universities of Halle and Heidelberg, and making several journeys, some of them on foot, in Switzerland and other parts of the Continent. He returned to America in the autumn of 185 7, and began preaching in January, 1858, as a supply under the presiding elder on the Carlisle circuit, then a part of the Baltimore Conference, with his headquarters at Mechanicsburg, Pa. In the following spring he joined the Newark Conference at its first session, and was assigned to Irvington, N. J., where he labored for one year. He was ordained deacon by Bishop Scott in 1860, and elder by Bishop Morris in 1862. His pastorates after the first were at Passaic; Elizabethport; Water Street, Eliza beth; and Trinity, on Staten Island; each for two years, though the last named was cut short by his acceptance in the autumn of 1866 of the professorship of theology in the school for Ger man preachers at Bremen, Germany, later removed to Frankfort ou-the-main under the name of the Martin Mission Institute. Childe Harold's Pilgrimage Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Childe Harold's Pilgrimage: A Romaunt The following poem was written, for the most part, amidst the scenes which it attempts to describe. It was begun in Albania; and the parts relative to Spain and Portugal were composed from the author's observations in those countries. Thus much it may be necessary to state for the correctness of the descriptions. The scenes attempted to be sketched are in Spain, Portugal, Epirus, Acarnania, and Greece. There, for the present, the poem stops: its reception will determine whether the author may venture to conduct his readers to the capital of the East, through Ionia and Phrygia: these two cantos are merely experimental. A fictitious character is introduced for the sake of giving some connection to the piece; which, however, makes no pretension to regularity. It has been suggested to me by friends, on whose opinions I set a high value, that in this fictitious character, "Childe Harold," I may incur the suspicion of having intended some real personage: this I beg leave, once for all, to disclaim - Harold is the child of imagination, for the purpose I have stated. In some very trivial particulars, and those merely local, there might be grounds for such a notion; but in the main points, I should hope, none whatever. Macedonian Folklore (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Macedonian Folklore The present volume contains the result of some researches into the folklore of the Greek-speaking parts of Macedonia, carried on in 1900-1 by the author under the auspices of the Electors to the Prendergast Studentship and of the Governing Body of Emmanuel College. The materials thus derived from oral tradition have, in some cases, been supplemented from local publications. Among the latter, special mention must be made of the two excellent booklets on the antiquities and folklore of Liakkovikia, by A. D. Gousios, a native schoolmaster, frequently quoted in the following pages. The peasant almanacks have also yielded a few additional sayings concerning the months. The writer has not been content with a bare record of Dreams, magic terrors, spells of mighty power, Witches, and ghosts who rove at midnight hour, but, induced by the example of his betters, has undertaken some tentative flights to Zululand, Yungnulgra, Zamboanga, the Seranglao and Gorong archipelagoes, and other resorts now fashionable among folklorists. Ancient History and modern, the Old World and the New have been laid under contribution, to the limited extent of the author's reading, with the result that many a nursery rhyme, shorn of all its familiar simplicity, has been Started at home and hunted in the dark To Gaul, to Greece, and into Noah's ark. Geology and Water Springer Netherlands

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Water is one of the world's threatened resources: it is also a substance of importance in Geology. For some years I have felt the need for a book that sets out the fundamentals of fluid mechanics, written for geologists rather than engineers. The efforts to repair my own deficiencies in this respect led me along various unfamiliar paths, few of which were unrewarding. This book is the result of my journeys through the literature and as a geologist in several parts of the world. It has been written for students of geology of all ages, in the simplest terms possible, and it has one objective: to provide a basis for an understanding of the mechanical role of water in geology. It has not been written for experts in ground water hydrology, or specialists in the fluid aspects of structural geology: it has been written for geologists like me who are not very good mathematicians, so that we can take water better into account in our normal geological work, whatever it might be. The fundamentals apply equally to mineralization, geochemistry, and vulcanology although they have not been specifically mentioned. It has also been written for the university student of geology so that he or she may start a career with some appreciation of the importance of water, and understanding of its movement.
