Abrasion Resistance of Materials Scitus Academics LLC

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Abrasion is the process of scuffing, scratching, wearing down, marring, or rubbing away. It can be intentionally imposed in a controlled process using an abrasive. Abrasion can be an undesirable effect of exposure to normal use or exposure to the elements. Abrasion resistance is a property which allows a material to resist wear. Materials which are abrasion resistant are useful for situations in which mechanical wearing and damage can occur, including delicate applications such as the construction of space shuttle components. Numerous abrasion resistant products are employed for a variety of applications, including products which can be custom fabricated to meet the needs of specific users. When a product has abrasion resistance, it will resist erosion caused by scraping, rubbing, and other types of mechanical wear. This allows the material to retain its integrity and hold its form. This can be important when the form of a material is critical to its function, as seen when moving parts are carefully machined for maximum efficiency. Abrasion resistant materials can be used for both moving and fixed parts in settings where wearing could become an issue. The resistance of materials and structures to abrasion can be measured by a variety of test methods. These often use a specified abrasive or other controlled means of abrasion. There are a number of ways to make a material resistant to abrasion. One option is to utilize a special coating which creates a hardened layer over the material and resists friction. Some materials are also naturally extremely hard, and are ideal for settings in which abrasion resistance will be desirable. Other materials can be specifically formulated for increased hardness, as seen in plastics facilities which manufacture abrasion resistant plastics with the use of chemicals which harden and strengthen the plastic. Abrasion Resistance of Materials covers on the abrasion characteristics of various materials such as polymer nanocomposites, high performance fabrics, textiles, etc.

Burgers JACQUI SMALL

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The burger's timeless appeal lies in its simplicity. A well-made burger can transcend the sum of its parts to become truly sublime. Paul Gayler, Executive Chef at The Lanesborough Hotel London, has turned it into a gourmet treat. Sweeping away the enduring perception of burgers as merely a fast-food staple, Paul Gayler allows everyone to bring gourmet cooking into their own kitchen - whether for a sophisticated dinner party or a low-key barbecue. With its iconic status assured for more than a century as America's staple convenience food, the burger has been enjoying a healthy revival of late - thanks to its mainstay of a few quality ingredients, cooked quickly and served up as fresh as can be. A succulent home-made burger makes the perfect meal: nutritious, filling and portable, it combines a host of flavours that tantalise the taste buds. In this serving of Burgers, Paul Gayler presents his favourite 25 burger recipes. As well as the expected Ultimate burger with 'the works', there's a wealth of delicious and imaginative offerings. For carnivores, there's an eclectic mix and not just beef: choose, for instance, from a Caribbean pork burger, Smoked chicken cobb burger, Tandoori lamb burger or Turkey BLT burger stack. Vegetarians and fish eaters can enjoy a Feta club burger, Southwest red bean burger, Lebanese kibbeh burger or Jumbo prawn burger, among others. There really is a burger for everyone. And where's a burger without some accompanying fries and sides? All the sides - from classic slaw and ultimate fries to basic mayo and Tabasco ketchup, and much more in terms of relishes, pickles and sauces - are handily grouped together at the back of the book.

History of Brown University 1764-1914 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The History of Brown University 1764-1914 This history of Brown University is intended chiefly for its graduates, and some of the contents will have little interest for other readers. The effort has been to portray the university in all its aspects - not merely as a gallery of academic worthies, or an educational experiment station, or a stage where men now grave and reverend disported themselves in thoughtless youth, or an athletic and social club, but as all these and more. Even to graduates, therefore, some parts of the narrative will appeal less strongly than others; but it seemed more essential to give a just account of the university as a whole than to rivet the attention of every reader on every page. The book is based almost entirely on original sources, a list of which will be found in the Appendix. In quotations from these the spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc., have been reproduced as accurately as possible: this method helps the reader to get the flavor of times past, and is peculiarly worth while in the history of an educational institution because it illustrates the use of English by Corporation, Faculty, and students. It is a pleasure to record my thanks for aid received from graduates and friends of the university. Professor William MacDonald, the Rev. Dr. Henry M. King, and Professor Walter G. Everett, of the Committee on the Academic Celebration, read the manuscript and made helpful criticisms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Wonderland or Alaska and the Inland Passage (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Wonderland or Alaska and the Inland Passage Multi discurrent, et augebitur stultitia" Thus did one of the profoundest of modern thinkers parody the prediction of the Hebrew prophet who foretold the time when, with increased facilities for travel and intercommunication, there should come a great enlargement of the bounds of knowledge, and a corresponding amelioration of the condition of humanity. It would, however, be strange indeed, if the complex process of social evolution, even in its present stage, were not marked by some of the indications of a retrograde movement. The age in which we live has undoubtedly its peculiar follies and foibles, which are but thrown into relief by the qualities that more generally distinguish it. But many are running to and fro, and knowledge is being increased. Nature is revealing herself to the traveler in new forms and aspects, and disclosing to his wondering gaze mysterious pages of her great book hitherto hidden from him. And while extensive tracts of country, presenting physical features to which the entire known world furnishes no parallel, have been brought by railroad enterprise within reach alike of the curious sight-seer and the inquiring student, a vast region, of almost unexampled wealth-producing capabilities, has, by the same agency, been thrown open to that advancing tide of civilization which is rapidly overspreading the world. Hence the traveler journeying to Wonderland - to that enchanted realm where the most extravagant creations of the fancy appear trivial and commonplace beside the more extraordinary works of Nature - sees also, in process of solution, some of the hitherto most perplexing problems of economics; observes, as he can not do with like facility anywhere else in the world, the well-ordered plan upon which the bounty of Nature is distributed; and witnesses the unlocking of vast storehouses of good, to supply the increasing needs of the human race. It may be doubted whether the world affords another tour at once so delightful and so instructive as that which, beginning at the head of the Mississippi valley, and crossing the great wheat fields of Dakota and Eastern Washington, the stock ranges of Montana, and the gold and silver ribbed mountains of Montana and Idaho, embraces also the wonders of the Yellowstone National Park, and the incomparable scenery of the Columbia river, to crown all with the stupendous sights of that Great Land whose unique natural features have earned for it the well-deserved title of "Wonderland." No longer one of peril and hardship, but, on the contrary, one of absolute luxury, this tour has, within the last two years, attracted thousands of pilgrims from all parts of the civilized world. To them, as well as to all other lovers of the sublime and beautiful, and to the students of the mysteries of Nature in all lands, who may have the good fortune to visit the far Northwest in 1886, the following pages are respectfully inscribed. Report of a Committee of Directors of the Bank of the United States (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Report of a Committee of Directors of the Bank of the United States The Committee to whom was referred on the 24th of September, a paper signed "Andrew Jackson," purporting to have been read to a Cabinet on the 18th, and also another paper signed "H. D. Gilpin, John T. Sullivan, Peter Wager, and Hugh M'Elderry," bearing date August 19th, 1833 - with instructions to consider the same, and report to the Board "whether any, and what steps may be necessary on the part of the Board in consequence of the publication of said letter and report," beg leave to state - That they have carefully examined these papers, and will now proceed to report the result of their reflections in regard to them. In order, however, to render them more intelligible, it will be proper to recal to the attention of the Board, the actual relation which the Bank has for some years past borne to the Executive. Since the establishment of the Institution it has devoted itself anxiously and exclusively to the purposes of its creation, the restoration of the currency, the maintenance of the general credit, and the accommodation of the internal and foreign trade of the country. That it has not failed in these objects - that it has indeed realized more than the anticipations of the most sanguine, is attested by all parts of the community. It was in the midst of this career of inoffensive usefulness, when soon after the accession to power of the present Executive, the purpose was distinctly revealed that other duties than those to the country were required - and that it was necessary for the Bank in administering its affairs, to consult the political views of those who had now obtained the ascendancy in the Executive. It is understood that soon after that event a meeting was held in Washington of the principal chiefs, to consider the means of perpetuating their new authority, and the possession of the Bank was among the most prominent objects of the parties assembled. The first open manifestation of this purpose was in June, 1829, when a concerted effort was made by the executive officers to interfere in the election of the Board of Directors at Portsmouth. At the head of this attempt was Mr. Levi Woodbury, now a member of the present Cabinet at Washington, who did not hesitate to avow in a letter to the Secretary of the Treasury, which, though marked "confidential," was subsequently ordered to be published by the Committee of investigation in 1832 - that he wished the interference of the Government to remove the President of the Branch at Portsmouth, of whom he says: - "The new President Jeremiah Mason, is a particular friend of Mr. Webster, and his political character is doubtless well known to you " - and he requests the Secretary of the Treasury "to commumunicate with some of the Directors of the Mother Bank in favour of such a change. Outline Grammar of the Kachari (Bara) Language as Spoken in District Darrang, Assam Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Outline Grammar of the Kachári (Bĺrĺ) Language as Spoken in District Darrang, Assam: With Illustrative Sentences, Notes, Reading Lessons, and a Short Vocabulary The following brief sketch of the Kachari language as spoken in this district (Darrang) has been put together under many difficulties and disadvantages, as the writer has been able to give to its compilation little more than mere scraps and fragments of his time. Much of the Accidence, in particular, was drawn up in Ms, some two years since, and should have been re-written before publication, had the pressure of other duties given opportunity for so doing; for it was put together at various times and in different places, and the whole suffers from a want of re-arrangement and expansion. This is especially the case with the section which treats of Verbs, and the peculiar way hi which they are compounded with other parts of speech; i.e., with nouns, adjectives, and other verbal roots. There are many points of interest, too, in the language, e.g., the exact use and force of the tenses, which must still be regarded as open questions, and with regard to which we shall not perhaps be in a position to speak with anything like authority until we know something of the Grammar of the many closely cognate languages. But as there seems little prospect of any great additions being made to our knowledge in this direction for some time to come, it seems best on the whole to allow the following pamphlet to appear at once, with all its obvious and manifold imperfections. Letters of Cicero, Vol. 2 of 4 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Letters of Cicero, Vol. 2 of 4: Whole the Whole Extant Correspondence in Chronological Order The letters in this volume (April, B.C. 51-June, B.C. 49) find Cicero on the point of starting to his province of Cilicia, in which he was to succeed Appius Claudius Puleher, the elder brother of his old enemy Publius Clodius. The circumstances in which he had been, against his will, constrained to undertake this duty, have been noticed in the introduction to the first volume. From the very first he disliked the idea of it, and especially shrank from a prolonged absence from Rome. The district known as Cilicia is a narrow country between Mount Taurus and the sea, falling naturally into two divisions, near the city of Soli - on the west Cilicia Aspera, on the east Cilicia Campestris, separated from the province of Syria by Mount Amanus. The Romans had first been brought into connexion with Cilicia Aspera in their efforts to put down the piracy in the Eastern Mediterranean in the year B.C. 103. For some years it was a provincia in the sense of a military command, rather than an organized province. But this command was held by a number of able men who had gradually reduced it to the regular form of a Roman province, adding to it various neighbouring districts. Its extent and organized administration, as found by Cicero, dated from the Asian settlement of Pompey, after the Mithridatic war in B.C. 64. It now consisted of five parts, Cilicia, Aspera and Campestris, Pisidia, Isauria, Lycaonia. But to these had been added, temporarily, three "dioceses" in Phrygia - Laodicea, Apamea, and Synnada - and the island of Cyprus, after its reduction by Cato in B.C. 58. The province thus contained a population some of whom, not long before, had been addicted to piracy and brigandage. Out of Essex Signal Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Beyond the brash modern stereotypes of Essex there exists a landscape that has inspired some of England's finest writing. This book tracks the paths of those literary figures who have ventured into the wilder parts of Essex. Some are illustrious names: Shakespeare, Defoe, John Clare, Joseph Conrad, H. G. Wells, Arthur Ransome. Others may be lesser known but here are well remembered: Samuel Purchas, Sabine Baring-Gould, Margery Allingham, J. A. Baker. In ten chapters James Canton crosses five centuries into the furthest reaches of the county in search of writers and what can be seen of their work today. J. A. Baker follows the peregrines along the Chelmer valley to the Blackwater estuary at Maldon. John Clare wanders the hidden pathways of Epping Forest scribbling poetry while Arthur Ransome sails around the islands of the Hamford Waters. William Shakespeare appears in the woody glades beside Castle Hedingham, Joseph Conrad stares across the Essex marshes at Tilbury to the Thames, while Sabine Baring-Gould's Gothic heroine Mehalah lives upon a lone muddy stretch beside Mersea Island, where Margery Allingham sets her first tale of smuggling and murder; Daniel Defoe recounts the horror of the ague on the Dengie Peninsula; H. G. Wells writes a tale of the First World War from his home at Little Easton. Samuel Purchas tells such seafaring tales from his Southend vicarage as to inspire Samuel Taylor Coleridge to write Kubla Khan. Combining detailed literary detective work with personal responses to landscapes and their meanings, James Canton offers a fresh vision of Essex, its cultural history and its living legacy of wilderness and imagination.

"'Come let us build a Third Kingdom, and in this Third Reich, hey, sisters, you will live happily; hey, brothers, you will live happily; hey, kids, you will live happily; hey, you German patriots, you will see Germany sitting enthroned above all the peoples of the world.' How clever Hitler was, brothers and sisters, in depicting these ideals!" Thus the late President Sukarno of Indonesia, an anti-colonial leader, in a public speech while accepting an honorary degree, and viewing Europe and its history through an inverted telescope, as Europeans often regard other parts of the globe. Strange shifts in perspective can take place when Berlin is viewed from Jakarta, or when the complex histories of colonial domination strand what counts as the founding work of a national culture in a language its people can no longer read. The 'Spectre of Comparisons' arises as nations stir into self awareness, matching themselves against others, and becoming whole through the exercise of the imagination. In this series of profound and eloquent essays, Benedict Anderson, best known for his classic book on nationalism, Imagined Communities, explores these effects as they work their way through politics and culture. Spanning broad accounts of the development of nationalism and identity, and detailed studies of Southeast Asia, the book includes pieces on East Timor, where every Indonesian attempt to suppress national feeling has had the opposite effect; on the Philippines, where it is said that some horses eat better than some stable-hands; on Thailand, where so much money can be made in elected posts that candidates regularly kill to get them; on the Filipino nationalist and novelist Jose Rizal for whom 'we mortals are like turtles - we have value and are classified according to our shells'; and a remarkable essay on Mario Vargas Llosa, detailing the fate of indigenous minorities at the hands of the modern state. While The Spectre of Comparisons is an indispensable resource for those interested in Southeast Asia, Anderson also takes up the large issues of the universal grammars of nationalism and ethnicity, the peculiarity of nationalist imagery as replicas without originals, and the mutations of nationalism in an age of mass global migrations and instant electronic communications.

Touch of Paradise in Hell Helion & Company

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Away from the turmoil of battle in the Ypres Salient, the town of Poperinge developed into the nerve centre of the British sector. In the heart of this bustling town, the Army Chaplains Philip ('Tubby') Clayton and Neville Talbot opened an 'Every-Man's Club'. It was an alternative place of wholesome recreation where all soldiers, regardless of their rank, were welcome. The inspired way in which Tubby ran this 'home from home', turned Talbot House, or 'Toc H', into the best-known soldiers' club of the British Army - a sanctuary for half a million men on their way to or from the Front. The first part, Portrait of an Every Man's Club, paints a graphic picture of Talbot House against the immense background of the waste and horror of war, from its early beginnings at the end of 1915 till the private owner's return early in 1919. The connecting thread is provided by a wide selection of Tubby's letters, mostly to his mother. These are supplemented with extracts from his diaries and other wartime writings, as well as letters and accounts from dozens of other eyewitnesses. Together they provide an intimate, vivid and complete picture of what life at the House was like. They give us a fascinating insight into the lives that Tubby and his guests were living, the kind of thoughts they were thinking, and the visions, hopes and ideals that gripped their minds. Indeed, they tell the authentic history of Talbot House In the second part, A Home from Home, Tubby shows us around the House so that we get a clearer picture as he passes from room to room, from the lively and noisy gaiety in the canteen to the peace and serenity in the chapel. This 'guided tour' is flavoured with recollections of some 40 officers and other ranks relating how they experienced the unique atmosphere radiating from the various parts of the remarkable building. In A House of People, the focus is first put on the Padre and his batman, Private Arthur Pettifer. Then follows a colourful palette of stories by the 'innkeeper', each about one particular 'customer' who, for one specific reason or another, stood out in his experience. But also a number of 'Talbotousians' have a tale to tell. Browsing through their memories, five of them relate a significant incident that will forever be associated with Talbot House or Tubby. The final chapter takes us beyond the walls of the Old House. In a few poignant sketches it describes Tubby's visits to his parishioners in the slums of warfare. It portrays the comradeship of shared experiences, the excitements and the miseries, and the triumph of the human spirit over unimaginable suffering. Some rare reminiscences of the short-lived and much-tested daughter-house in Ieper complete the picture. The appendices, all wartime documents produced at Talbot House, shed further light on its early history, management and day-to-day working. "A Touch of Paradise in Hell" can not only be enjoyed by the reader at home but also can be used as a guidebook during a visit to Talbot House and serve as a 'Talbot House guide' to the Ieper Salient and the Somme, as it links people and stories to locations. The annotations contain a wealth of interesting background information.

VERTEBRATE DISSECTION, Ninth Edition, provides exceptionally thorough and student-tested descriptions of dissection procedures and the steps needed to find all structures. It encourages and facilitates active and self-directed learning by the students so that instructors can teach more effectively and efficiently. The manual emphasizes dissection procedures that preserve as many structures as possible for later review of the entire specimens. This approach is an excellent preparation for students who will subsequently take anatomy courses in the health and animal sciences. Moreover, this manual places the observed material into an evolutionary and functional context. Students will understand the biological role, physiology, and embryonic development of each organ system and its parts, and how the various organ systems have evolved over time and in different animals. Organized by organ systems, this text brings the anatomy alive for students by interspersing narrative text throughout and explaining how the shape and structure of an organ relates to its function, and how evolutionary processes have transformed the form and function of organs. Additionally, the authors introduce a new feature, Anatomy in Action boxes, which contain interesting supplemental material that provides a broader context. Some of these boxes relate to functional anatomy, some make comparisons between different animals, and some address general biological questions that may include comparisons to the anatomy and biology of human beings.

Excerpt from Discourse on the Studies of the University The substance of the following discourse was delivered in the Chapel of Trinity College, on the day of the annual Commemoration in December last, and is published at the request of the junior members of the Society, to whom it was more immediately addressed. As the long delay in its publication requires some apology, the Author begs leave to state, that the request, on which he is now acting, first reached him during the Christmas vacation, when he was absent from the University; and that for some weeks after his return he was so much occupied in completing a course of lectures and in passing two memoirs through the press, that the Lent Term had nearly expired before he had time to revise his MS for the printer. Without any further delay it was then struck off as far as page 28; and he hoped to have published it at the commencement of the Easter Term. During its progress through the press he found however that he had undertaken a more difficult task than he had imagined: for having animadverted with much freedom on some parts of the Cambridge course of reading, he felt himself compelled, before he dared to give what he had written to the public, to enter at more length on a justification of his opinions. On this account, his remarks on the classical, metaphysical, and moral studies of the University (extending from p. 28 to p. 77) were cast over again, and expanded to at least three times their original length. Christian Conquest of India (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Excerpt from The Christian Conquest of India The task of writing this book was undertaken at the urgent request of leading members of the Young People's Missionary Movement. The writer had spent many years in India and had acquired a personal knowledge of missionary work in nearly all its phases, but yet did not at first sufficiently appreciate the difficulties connected with the work which was committed to him. The manuscript of this hook when completed was placed in the hands of the Editorial Committee for revision, and especially to prepare it for the use of mission study classes. This Committee has made important changes in some parts of the work, both by way of addition in some places, and omission in others. It was also found necessary to change the plan to some extent in order to make the book better serve its purpose as a text-book for students. India contains about one fifth of the human race, and missionary work carried on in such a vast empire, and directed by the leading Churches of the Protestant world leads the student into fields of observation and inquiry hardly second to any others in the world.
