NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER - NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE ECONOMIST - "I wrote this book not sure I could follow the road to character, but I wanted at least to know what the road looks like and how other people have trodden it."-David Brooks§§With the wisdom, humor, curiosity, and sharp insights that have brought millions of readers to his New York Times column and his previous bestsellers, David Brooks has consistently illuminated our daily lives in surprising and original ways. In The Social Animal, he explored the neuroscience of human connection and how we can flourish together. Now, in The Road to Character, he focuses on the deeper values that should inform our lives. Responding to what he calls the culture of the Big Me, which emphasizes external success, Brooks challenges us, and himself, to rebalance the scales between our "résumé virtues"-achieving wealth, fame, and status-and our "eulogy virtues," those that exist at the core of our being: kindness, bravery, honesty, or faithfulness, focusing on what kind of relationships we have formed.§§Looking to some of the world's greatest thinkers and inspiring leaders, Brooks explores how, through internal struggle and a sense of their own limitations, they have built a strong inner character. Labor activist Frances Perkins understood the need to suppress parts of herself so that she could be an instrument in a larger cause. Dwight Eisenhower organized his life not around impulsive self-expression but considered self-restraint. Dorothy Day, a devout Catholic convert and champion of the poor, learned as a young woman the vocabulary of simplicity and surrender. Civil rights pioneers A. Philip Randolph and Bayard Rustin learned reticence and the logic of self-discipline, the need to distrust oneself even while waging a noble crusade.§§Blending psychology, politics, spirituality, and confessional, The Road to Character provides an opportunity for us to rethink our priorities, and strive to build rich inner lives marked by humility and moral depth.§§"Joy," David Brooks writes, "is a byproduct experienced by people who are aiming for something else. But it comes."§§Praise for The Road to Character §§"A hyper-readable, lucid, often richly detailed human story." - The New York Times Book Review §§"David Brooks-the New York Times columnist and PBS commentator whose measured calm gives punditry a good name-offers the building blocks of a meaningful life." - Washingtonian §§"This profound and eloquent book is written with moral urgency and philosophical elegance." -Andrew Solomon, author of Far from the Tree and The Noonday Demon §§"The voice of the book is calm, fair and humane. The highlight of the material is the quality of the author's moral and spiritual judgments." -The Washington Post §§"A powerful, haunting book that works its way beneath your skin." -The Guardian (U.K.)§§"This learned and engaging book brims with pleasures." - Newsday§§"Original and eye-opening . . . At his best, Brooks is a normative version of Malcolm Gladwell, culling from a wide array of scientists and thinkers to weave an idea bigger than the sum of its parts." - USA Today §§"There is something affecting in the diligence with which Brooks seeks a cure for his self-diagnosed shallowness by plumbing the depths of others." -Rebecca Mead, The New Yorker §§From the Hardcover edition.

Boots at the Swan Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Boots at the Swan: A Farce in One Act This little burletta has been some four or five years before the public, and seems to retain all its original popularity. It is from the pen of Mr. Selby, the author of the English "Robert Macaire" and other pieces of merit. The part of the "deal boots," Jacob, was written for Keeley; and he is said to have made it inimitably amusing. At the New York Olympic Theatre, Mr. Mitchell sustains the part with all that rich comic unction for which he is celebrated. The other parts are also well impersonated at this flourishing establishment. Frank Friskly is quite an amusing personage of the Young Rapid species; and though there is a liberal dash of extravagance in this and all the other characters, they have sufficient verisimilitude to engage the attention and keep the risible faculties in constant exercise. Although not remarkable for its originality, this piece promises to retain its place among the stock afterpieces of the stage, from the pervading vivacity and bustle which mark its construction. It is full of action - not of that action which necessarily implies external incident and motion, but the action which developes itself in amusing surprises of phraseology, odd phases of character, a constant ebb and flow of motives and counter-motives, all ending in a denouement which is strictly in keeping with the humorous tenor of the whole piece. Seventy Centuries of the Life of Mankind, Vol. 1 of 2 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Seventy Centuries of the Life of Mankind, Vol. 1 of 2: In a Survey of History From the Earliest Known Records Through All Stages of Civilization, in All Important Countries, Down to the Present Time; Ancient and Medieval The method of historical composition which these writers have illustrated so finely is one that appeals to my admiration, and to my judgment of values in historical work. I have given much thought to its principles, and am bold enough, in my present undertaking, to attempt the largest possible application of them, in a comprehensive survey of the whole of human history, from its dawn to the present day. The resulting exhibit differs essentially, in mode and character, from any other of like scope that I know. The aim in it has been to sift out almost every thing that does not contribute importantly to a clear dis closure of the main movements in events, the occasional changes of direction in such movements, the marking thereby of epochs and periods that are more or less distinct, and the continuity of the forces that act in them throughout. If I have succeeded even partially in my undertaking, I can feel that I have not done an uncalled for work; because success will mean some helpfulness to those who read it in comprehending History as a whole, and in subsequently seeking a better knowledge of its parts with a livelier interest in the details. My first essay toward this work was made in a general sketch of European history, published in my History for Ready Reference, readers of which sketch have often urged me to extend it, or extend the plan of it, as I have now done. In parts of the present writing I have made considerable use of the former essay, but with ex tensive recasting, revision and enlargement, so that even the European sections of the survey are essentially new. Abrasion Resistance of Materials Scitus Academics LLC

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Abrasion is the process of scuffing, scratching, wearing down, marring, or rubbing away. It can be intentionally imposed in a controlled process using an abrasive. Abrasion can be an undesirable effect of exposure to normal use or exposure to the elements. Abrasion resistance is a property which allows a material to resist wear. Materials which are abrasion resistant are useful for situations in which mechanical wearing and damage can occur, including delicate applications such as the construction of space shuttle components. Numerous abrasion resistant products are employed for a variety of applications, including products which can be custom fabricated to meet the needs of specific users. When a product has abrasion resistance, it will resist erosion caused by scraping, rubbing, and other types of mechanical wear. This allows the material to retain its integrity and hold its form. This can be important when the form of a material is critical to its function, as seen when moving parts are carefully machined for maximum efficiency. Abrasion resistant materials can be used for both moving and fixed parts in settings where wearing could become an issue. The resistance of materials and structures to abrasion can be measured by a variety of test methods. These often use a specified abrasive or other controlled means of abrasion. There are a number of ways to make a material resistant to abrasion. One option is to utilize a special coating which creates a hardened layer over the material and resists friction. Some materials are also naturally extremely hard, and are ideal for settings in which abrasion resistance will be desirable. Other materials can be specifically formulated for increased hardness, as seen in plastics facilities which manufacture abrasion resistant plastics with the use of chemicals which harden and strengthen the plastic. Abrasion Resistance of Materials covers on the abrasion characteristics of various materials such as polymer nanocomposites, high performance fabrics, textiles, etc.

History of Brown University 1764-1914 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The History of Brown University 1764-1914 This history of Brown University is intended chiefly for its graduates, and some of the contents will have little interest for other readers. The effort has been to portray the university in all its aspects - not merely as a gallery of academic worthies, or an educational experiment station, or a stage where men now grave and reverend disported themselves in thoughtless youth, or an athletic and social club, but as all these and more. Even to graduates, therefore, some parts of the narrative will appeal less strongly than others; but it seemed more essential to give a just account of the university as a whole than to rivet the attention of every reader on every page. The book is based almost entirely on original sources, a list of which will be found in the Appendix. In quotations from these the spelling, capitalization, punctuation, etc., have been reproduced as accurately as possible: this method helps the reader to get the flavor of times past, and is peculiarly worth while in the history of an educational institution because it illustrates the use of English by Corporation, Faculty, and students. It is a pleasure to record my thanks for aid received from graduates and friends of the university. Professor William MacDonald, the Rev. Dr. Henry M. King, and Professor Walter G. Everett, of the Committee on the Academic Celebration, read the manuscript and made helpful criticisms. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Wonderland or Alaska and the Inland Passage (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Wonderland or Alaska and the Inland Passage Multi discurrent, et augebitur stultitia" Thus did one of the profoundest of modern thinkers parody the prediction of the Hebrew prophet who foretold the time when, with increased facilities for travel and intercommunication, there should come a great enlargement of the bounds of knowledge, and a corresponding amelioration of the condition of humanity. It would, however, be strange indeed, if the complex process of social evolution, even in its present stage, were not marked by some of the indications of a retrograde movement. The age in which we live has undoubtedly its peculiar follies and foibles, which are but thrown into relief by the qualities that more generally distinguish it. But many are running to and fro, and knowledge is being increased. Nature is revealing herself to the traveler in new forms and aspects, and disclosing to his wondering gaze mysterious pages of her great book hitherto hidden from him. And while extensive tracts of country, presenting physical features to which the entire known world furnishes no parallel, have been brought by railroad enterprise within reach alike of the curious sight-seer and the inquiring student, a vast region, of almost unexampled wealth-producing capabilities, has, by the same agency, been thrown open to that advancing tide of civilization which is rapidly overspreading the world. Hence the traveler journeying to Wonderland - to that enchanted realm where the most extravagant creations of the fancy appear trivial and commonplace beside the more extraordinary works of Nature - sees also, in process of solution, some of the hitherto most perplexing problems of economics; observes, as he can not do with like facility anywhere else in the world, the well-ordered plan upon which the bounty of Nature is distributed; and witnesses the unlocking of vast storehouses of good, to supply the increasing needs of the human race. It may be doubted whether the world affords another tour at once so delightful and so instructive as that which, beginning at the head of the Mississippi valley, and crossing the great wheat fields of Dakota and Eastern Washington, the stock ranges of Montana, and the gold and silver ribbed mountains of Montana and Idaho, embraces also the wonders of the Yellowstone National Park, and the incomparable scenery of the Columbia river, to crown all with the stupendous sights of that Great Land whose unique natural features have earned for it the well-deserved title of "Wonderland." No longer one of peril and hardship, but, on the contrary, one of absolute luxury, this tour has, within the last two years, attracted thousands of pilgrims from all parts of the civilized world. To them, as well as to all other lovers of the sublime and beautiful, and to the students of the mysteries of Nature in all lands, who may have the good fortune to visit the far Northwest in 1886, the following pages are respectfully inscribed. Report of a Committee of Directors of the Bank of the United States (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Excerpt from Report of a Committee of Directors of the Bank of the United States The Committee to whom was referred on the 24th of September, a paper signed "Andrew Jackson," purporting to have been read to a Cabinet on the 18th, and also another paper signed "H. D. Gilpin, John T. Sullivan, Peter Wager, and Hugh M'Elderry," bearing date August 19th, 1833 - with instructions to consider the same, and report to the Board "whether any, and what steps may be necessary on the part of the Board in consequence of the publication of said letter and report," beg leave to state - That they have carefully examined these papers, and will now proceed to report the result of their reflections in regard to them. In order, however, to render them more intelligible, it will be proper to recal to the attention of the Board, the actual relation which the Bank has for some years past borne to the Executive. Since the establishment of the Institution it has devoted itself anxiously and exclusively to the purposes of its creation, the restoration of the currency, the maintenance of the general credit, and the accommodation of the internal and foreign trade of the country. That it has not failed in these objects - that it has indeed realized more than the anticipations of the most sanguine, is attested by all parts of the community. It was in the midst of this career of inoffensive usefulness, when soon after the accession to power of the present Executive, the purpose was distinctly revealed that other duties than those to the country were required - and that it was necessary for the Bank in administering its affairs, to consult the political views of those who had now obtained the ascendancy in the Executive. It is understood that soon after that event a meeting was held in Washington of the principal chiefs, to consider the means of perpetuating their new authority, and the possession of the Bank was among the most prominent objects of the parties assembled. The first open manifestation of this purpose was in June, 1829, when a concerted effort was made by the executive officers to interfere in the election of the Board of Directors at Portsmouth. At the head of this attempt was Mr. Levi Woodbury, now a member of the present Cabinet at Washington, who did not hesitate to avow in a letter to the Secretary of the Treasury, which, though marked "confidential," was subsequently ordered to be published by the Committee of investigation in 1832 - that he wished the interference of the Government to remove the President of the Branch at Portsmouth, of whom he says: - "The new President Jeremiah Mason, is a particular friend of Mr. Webster, and his political character is doubtless well known to you " - and he requests the Secretary of the Treasury "to commumunicate with some of the Directors of the Mother Bank in favour of such a change. Outline Grammar of the Kachari (Bara) Language as Spoken in District Darrang, Assam Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Outline Grammar of the Kachári (Bĺrĺ) Language as Spoken in District Darrang, Assam: With Illustrative Sentences, Notes, Reading Lessons, and a Short Vocabulary The following brief sketch of the Kachari language as spoken in this district (Darrang) has been put together under many difficulties and disadvantages, as the writer has been able to give to its compilation little more than mere scraps and fragments of his time. Much of the Accidence, in particular, was drawn up in Ms, some two years since, and should have been re-written before publication, had the pressure of other duties given opportunity for so doing; for it was put together at various times and in different places, and the whole suffers from a want of re-arrangement and expansion. This is especially the case with the section which treats of Verbs, and the peculiar way hi which they are compounded with other parts of speech; i.e., with nouns, adjectives, and other verbal roots. There are many points of interest, too, in the language, e.g., the exact use and force of the tenses, which must still be regarded as open questions, and with regard to which we shall not perhaps be in a position to speak with anything like authority until we know something of the Grammar of the many closely cognate languages. But as there seems little prospect of any great additions being made to our knowledge in this direction for some time to come, it seems best on the whole to allow the following pamphlet to appear at once, with all its obvious and manifold imperfections. Letters of Cicero, Vol. 2 of 4 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Letters of Cicero, Vol. 2 of 4: Whole the Whole Extant Correspondence in Chronological Order The letters in this volume (April, B.C. 51-June, B.C. 49) find Cicero on the point of starting to his province of Cilicia, in which he was to succeed Appius Claudius Puleher, the elder brother of his old enemy Publius Clodius. The circumstances in which he had been, against his will, constrained to undertake this duty, have been noticed in the introduction to the first volume. From the very first he disliked the idea of it, and especially shrank from a prolonged absence from Rome. The district known as Cilicia is a narrow country between Mount Taurus and the sea, falling naturally into two divisions, near the city of Soli - on the west Cilicia Aspera, on the east Cilicia Campestris, separated from the province of Syria by Mount Amanus. The Romans had first been brought into connexion with Cilicia Aspera in their efforts to put down the piracy in the Eastern Mediterranean in the year B.C. 103. For some years it was a provincia in the sense of a military command, rather than an organized province. But this command was held by a number of able men who had gradually reduced it to the regular form of a Roman province, adding to it various neighbouring districts. Its extent and organized administration, as found by Cicero, dated from the Asian settlement of Pompey, after the Mithridatic war in B.C. 64. It now consisted of five parts, Cilicia, Aspera and Campestris, Pisidia, Isauria, Lycaonia. But to these had been added, temporarily, three "dioceses" in Phrygia - Laodicea, Apamea, and Synnada - and the island of Cyprus, after its reduction by Cato in B.C. 58. The province thus contained a population some of whom, not long before, had been addicted to piracy and brigandage. VERTEBRATE DISSECTION, Ninth Edition, provides exceptionally thorough and student-tested descriptions of dissection procedures and the steps needed to find all structures. It encourages and facilitates active and self-directed learning by the students so that instructors can teach more effectively and efficiently. The manual emphasizes dissection procedures that preserve as many structures as possible for later review of the entire specimens. This approach is an excellent preparation for students who will subsequently take anatomy courses in the health and animal sciences. Moreover, this manual places the observed material into an evolutionary and functional context. Students will understand the biological role, physiology, and embryonic development of each organ system and its parts, and how the various organ systems have evolved over time and in different animals. Organized by organ systems, this text brings the anatomy alive for students by interspersing narrative text throughout and explaining how the shape and structure of an organ relates to its function, and how evolutionary processes have transformed the form and function of organs. Additionally, the authors introduce a new feature, Anatomy in Action boxes, which contain interesting supplemental material that provides a broader context. Some of these boxes relate to functional anatomy, some make comparisons between different animals, and some address general biological questions that may include comparisons to the anatomy and biology of human beings.

Excerpt from Discourse on the Studies of the University The substance of the following discourse was delivered in the Chapel of Trinity College, on the day of the annual Commemoration in December last, and is published at the request of the junior members of the Society, to whom it was more immediately addressed. As the long delay in its publication requires some apology, the Author begs leave to state, that the request, on which he is now acting, first reached him during the Christmas vacation, when he was absent from the University; and that for some weeks after his return he was so much occupied in completing a course of lectures and in passing two memoirs through the press, that the Lent Term had nearly expired before he had time to revise his MS for the printer. Without any further delay it was then struck off as far as page 28; and he hoped to have published it at the commencement of the Easter Term. During its progress through the press he found however that he had undertaken a more difficult task than he had imagined: for having animadverted with much freedom on some parts of the Cambridge course of reading, he felt himself compelled, before he dared to give what he had written to the public, to enter at more length on a justification of his opinions. On this account, his remarks on the classical, metaphysical, and moral studies of the University (extending from p. 28 to p. 77) were cast over again, and expanded to at least three times their original length.
