Golden Verses of Pythagoras Hermetica Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Antoine Fabre d'Olivet (December 8, 1767-March 25, 1825) was a French author, poet, and composer whose biblical and philosophical hermeneutics in?uenced many occultists, such as Eliphas Lévi and Gerard Encausse (Papus), and René Guénon. D'Olivet spent his life pursuing the esoteric wisdom concealed in the Hebrew scriptures, Greek philosophy, and the symbolism of many ancient cultures as far back as ancient India, Persia, and Egypt. His writings are considered classics of the Hermetic tradition. His best known works today are his research on the Hebrew language (The Hebraic Tongue Restored), his translation and interpretation of the writings of Pythagoras (The Golden Verses of Pythagoras), and his writings on the sacred art of music. In addition to the above works, Hermetica has published in consistent facsimile format for its Collected Works of Fabre d'Olivet series Cain and The Healing of Rodolphe Grivel, as well as Hermeneutic Interpretation of the Origin of the Social State of Man and the Destiny of the Adamic Race. D'Olivet's mastery of many ancient languages and their literatures enabled him to write (in the time of Napoleon) this extraordinary text which remains a landmark investigation of the deeper esoteric undercurrents at work in the history of culture. The Golden Verses of Pythagoras, so remarkable for their moral elevation, and standing as the most beautiful monument of antiquity raised in honor of Wisdom, were originally transcribed by Lysis, though it is to Hierocles that we owe the version that has come down to us. Fabre d'Olivet has translated them into French verse of special form (eumolpique), and in his Discourse upon the Essence and Form of Poetry in the present volume he explains and illustrates this melodious style. In his Examinations of the Golden Verses, which comprises the last division of this book, he has drawn with the power of his great mind the metaphysical correlation of Providence, Destiny, and Will.

Opis - Magnificently illustrated with some of McQueen's most riveting designs, this book illuminates the struggles of a man who dared to defy accepted fashion norms and give the world a new sense of grandeur From conflicted gay teenager and aggressive and remote young man, through to his lonely suicide, this book charts Alexander McQueen's ascent to couturier par excellence, highlighting his spectacular shows and showing how his confrontational, streetwise manner was simply a shield that protected and masked a very shy, sensitive, and insecure man who hailed from the wrong side of the high fashion tracks. McQueen's talent is now globally acknowledged to have been unmatched in contemporary haute couture, and this book distills from the lavish sweep of his colors, designs, fabrics, and forward-driving concepts the essence of a man on a quest for beauty and his own contentment. In casting the spotlight on the stark contrast between catwalk glamour and his upbringing and personal demons, the book shows how his talent both nourished and destroyed him. It takes us from the vicious glare of the walkway where he was feted by the wealthy and famous as an innovative artist to behind the glamour. There, defiance delineated a life that was hurled into inescapable depression by the deaths, first of his great friend and supporter Isabella Blow and then by his mother. John Keats: Major Works Oxford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This authoritative edition was originally published in the acclaimed Oxford Authors series under the general editorship of Frank Kermode. It brings together a unique combination of Keats's poetry and prose - all the major poems, complemented by a generous selection of Keats's letters - to give the essence of his work and thinking. In his tragically short life Keats wrote an astonishing number of superb poems; his stature as one of the foremost poets of the Romantic movement remains unassailable. This volume contains all the poetry published during his lifetime, including Endymion in its entirety, the Odes, 'Lamia', and both versions of 'Hyperion'. The poetry is presented in chronological sequence, illustrating the staggering speed with which Keats's work matured. Further insight into his creative process is given by reproducing, in their original form, a number of poems that were published posthumously. Keats's letters are admired almost as much as his poetry and were described by T. S. Eliot as 'certainly the most notable and most important ever written by any English poet'. They provide the best biographical detail available and shed invaluable light on Keats's poems.ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

That is what "Somebody Should Have Told Us!" This book is about how we all have a state of perfect mental health and wisdom inside us that can only be covered up by our own thinking, and how our use of our power of thought creates the "reality" we see, out of which we then think, feel and act. Here are ten simple but profound truths for living well, arising from three spiritual facts that, once grasped or truly realized, can transform one's life. This book has the ability to spawn insights that change the lives of those who come to understand the simple, yet profound wisdom contained in this book. In fact, it already has. It shows people how they create their experience of life moment to moment. The book is written in an easy-to-understand manner with many stories of how people's lives have changed. Mimo iż poetka niejednokrotnie powracała w swoich wierszach do tych motywów, to za każdym razem zaskakują one głębią znaczeń i siłą wyrazu. Dla badacza i czytelnika twórczość Mariny Cwietajewej to niekończące się odkrywanie ukrytych sensów i rozkodowywanie emocji zamkniętych w wyrafinowanych formach słownych. ****** Constant Metaphysical Motifs in Marina Tsvetaeva's Works The analysis of metaphysical motifs in Marina Tsvetaeva?s lyric poetry, their occurrence and tendency to continuous metamorphosis. Tsvetaeva made a profound change in understanding the essence of the 20th century poetry and her reflections on the world and man?s place in it brought her closer to philosophy. The motifs she used had been present in philosophical discourse as they referred to such notions as space and time, body and soul, life and death, light and darkness, silence and sound, god. To a scholar and a reader Tsvetaeva?s poetry means constant discovering and decoding senses and emotions hidden in sophisticated words.

Teaching with Fire Jossey-Bass Inc.,U.S.

Reclaim your fire. '"Teaching with Fire" is a glorious collection of the poetry that has restored the faith of teachers in the highest, most transcendent values of their work with children...Those who want us to believe that teaching is a technocratic and robotic skill devoid of art or joy or beauty need to read this powerful collection. So, for that matter, do we all' - Jonathan Kozol, author of "Amazing Grace and Savage Inequalities". 'When reasoned argument fails, poetry helps us make sense of life. A few well-chosen images, the spinning together of words creates a way of seeing where we came from and lights up possibilities for where we might be going...Dip in, read, and ponder; share with others. It's inspiration in the very best sense' - Deborah Meier, co-principal of The Mission Hill School, Boston and founder of a network of schools in East Harlem, New York.'In the Confucian tradition it is said that the mark of a golden era is that children are the most important members of the society and teaching is the most revered profession. Our journey to that ideal may be a long one, but it is books like this that will sustain us - for who are we all at our best save teachers, and who matters more to us than the children?' - Peter M. Senge, founding chair, SoL (Society for Organizational Learning) and author of "The Fifth Discipline".Those of us who care about the young and their education must find ways to remember what teaching and learning are really about. We must find ways to keep our hearts alive as we serve our students. Poetry has the power to keep us vital and focused on what really matters in life and in schooling. "Teaching with Fire" is a wonderful collection of eighty-eight poems from such well-loved poets as Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Billy Collins, Emily Dickinson, and Pablo Neruda. Each of these evocative poems is accompanied by a brief story from a teacher explaining the significance of the poem in his or her life's work. This beautiful book also includes an essay that describes how poetry can be used to grow both personally and professionally. "Teaching With Fire" was written in partnership with the Center for Teacher Formation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.Royalties from this book will be used to fund scholarship opportunities for teachers to grow and learn.

The Girl in the Spider's Web - David Lagercrantz

Książki & Multimedia > Książki

Opis - THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO IS BACK WITH A UK NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER Lisbeth Salander and Mikael Blomkvist have not been in touch for some time. Then Blomkvist is contacted by renowned Swedish scientist Professor Balder. Warned that his life is in danger, but more concerned for his son's well-being, Balder wants Millennium to publish his story - and it is a terrifying one. More interesting to Blomkvist than Balder's world-leading advances in Artificial Intelligence, is his connection with a certain female superhacker. It seems that Salander, like Balder, is a target of ruthless cyber gangsters - and a violent criminal conspiracy that will very soon bring terror to the snowbound streets of Stockholm, to the Millennium team, and to Blomkvist and Salander themselves. Lagercrantz has constructed an elegant plot around different concepts of intelligence ... his continuation, while never formulaic, is a cleaner and tighter read than the originals ... Without ever becoming pastiche, the book is a respectful and affectionate homage to the originals. -- Mark Lawson Guardian. As I read Lagercrantz's The Girl in the Spider's Web, I found that I kept forgetting for several pages at a time that I wasn't reading genuine Larsson ... One devours Larsson's books for the plots, the action, the anger, and most of all for Lisbeth Salander ... Lagercrantz has caught her superbly, and expertly spun the sort of melodramatic yarn in which she can thrive. -- Jake Kerridge Daily Telegraph. Fans of Stieg Larsson's captivating odd couple of modern detective fiction - the genius punk hacker Lisbeth Salander and her sometime partner, the crusading investigative journalist Mikael Blomkvist - will not be disappointed ... Salander and Blomkvist have survived the authorship transition intact and are just as compelling as ever. -- Michiko Kakutani New York Times. Elegantly paced, slickly executed, and properly thrilling. -- Alison Flood Observer First, the conclusion. David Lagercrantz has done well ...The Girl in the Spider's Web conveys the essence and atmosphere of Larsson's Millennium novels. He has captured the spirit of their characters and devised inventive plots, most of them suitably exaggerated ... On the evidence of Spider's Web, most Millennium fans will want to continue following their Lisbeth. -- Marcel Berlins The Times. Lagercrantz's real achievement here is the subtle development of Lisbeth's character; he allows us access to her complex, alienated world but is careful not to remove her mystery and unknowability. Lisbeth Salander remains, in Lagercrantz's hands, the most enigmatic and fascinating anti-heroine in fiction. -- Barry Forshaw Financial Times. Rest easy, Lisbeth Salander fans - our punk hacker heroine is in good hands ... Swedish crime novelist David Lagercrantz takes the reins with prowess, not only mimicking Larsson's shamelessly pulpy prose, but admirably expanding the deliciously depraved world of the novels. -- Patrick Ryan USA Today. This major new edition, originally commissioned for the acclaimed Oxford Authors series under the general editorship of Frank Kermode, brings together a unique combination of Shelley's poetry and prose - the lyric poems, plays, longer poems, criticism, and essays - to give the essence of his work and thinking. Percy Bysshe Shelley (1792-1822) was a Romantic poet of radical imaginings, living in an age of change. His tempestuous life and friendship with Byron, and his tragically early death, at times threatened to overwhelm his legacy as a poet, but today his standing as one of the foremost English authors is assured. This freshly edited anthology - the fullest one-volume selection in English - includes all but one of the longer poems, from Queen Mab onwards, in their entirety. Only Laon and Cythna is excerpted, in a generous selection. As well as works such asPrometheus Unbound, The Mask of Anarchy, and Adonais, the volume includes a wide range of Shelley's shorter poems and much of his major prose, including A Defence of Poetry and almost all of A Philosophical View of Reform.Shelley emerges from these pages as a passionate and eloquent opponent of tyranny and a champion of human possibility. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

Love, the essential ingredient that binds everything bringing a whole new fathom to our respective lives. We have yet to truly scratch the surface or even digest or comprehend its alluring everlasting power. In our childhood, we are all attracted by the big book that yields simple defining words beside the colourful images that are designed to prepare us for life. These fascinating colours and words will reign forever in our conscience. I have tried to capture that youthful book element and hope that it holds with the reader's attention. That the words and photo's ring true to the aspects o our beautiful life within the auspices of love. From an early age I was mentored by a great man, wise and humble in his approach to life. He felt it his duty to inform me that the sole purpose of life was about each individual identifying themselves with the love. Further still, that life without the love essence was wasteful and meaningless, that we should essentially be educated in the art of love. I strove in my own haphazard way to understand eventually, absorbing some of his remarks and pondering long and hard on them. The end result is a book striking in its wording and illustrated images, as I have attempted to encompass every facet of the life that is love. I hope that my own words accompanied with the photo's contain an imaginative, invigorating, political and philosophical element, some of which are humorous but all laced with the undercurrent of love.
