Classics The Waves Virginia Woolf Introduction and Notes by Deborah Parsons, University of Birmingham. 'I am writing to a rhythm and not to a plot', Virginia Woolf stated of her eighth novel, The Waves. Widely regarded as one of her greatest and most original works, it conveys the rhythms of life in synchrony with the cycle of nature and the passage of time. Six children - Bernard, Susan, Rhoda, Neville, Jinny and Louis - meet in a garden close to the sea, their voices sounding over the constant echo of the waves that roll back and forth from the shore. The subsequent continuity of these six main characters, as they develop from childhood to maturity and follow different passions and ambitions, is interspersed with interludes from the timeless and unifying chorus of nature. In pure stream-of-consciousness style, Woolf presents a cross-section of multiple yet parallel lives, each marked by the disintegrating force of a mutual tragedy. The Waves is her searching exploration of individual and collective identity, and the observations and emotions of life, from the simplicity and surging optimism of youth to the vacancy and despair of middle-age. To this day, Emily Dickinson remains a beloved and enigmatic figure in American poetry. This "lady in white," who shut herself away from the world and found solace alone with her words, has since her death been viewed primarily through the lens of her poetry, which afforded her beauty and hope amid the agony and loneliness of her life. As a reclusive writer himself, contemporary French author Christian Bobin felt a kindred tie to the poetess, and his book The Lady in White honors Dickinson in the form of a brief, poetically imagined account of her life and the work that she gave the world. This fresh and personal interpretation of Dickinson's life leaves one with an impression of knowing Dickinson both through her poetry, as recalled by Bobin, and as he senses the person she was through her work and the sparse facts we have about her life.

Basil Bunting is one of the most important British poets of the 20th century. Acknowledged since the 1930s as a major figure in Modernist poetry, first by Pound and Zukofsky and later by younger writers, the Northumbrian master poet had to wait over 30 years before his genius was finally recognised in Britain - in 1966, with the publication of "BRIGGFLATTS", which Cyril Connolly called 'the finest long poem to have been published in England since T.S. Eliot's "Four Quartets". Bunting called "BRIGGFLATTS" his 'autobiography'. It is a complex work, drawing on many elements of his life, experience and knowledge, and features the saint Cuthbert and the warrior king Eric Bloodaxe as two opposing aspects of the Northumbrian - and his - character. Its structural models include the sonata form (and Scarlatti's music in particular) and the latticework of the Lindisfarne Gospels, while thematically it recalls Wordsworth's "Prelude". Bunting wrote that 'Poetry, like music, is to be heard.' His own readings of his own work are essential listening for a full appreciation of his highly musical poetry. This new edition includes a CD with an audio recording Bunting made of "BRIGGFLATTS" in 1967 and a DVD of Peter Bell's 1982 film portrait of Bunting. As well as his own notes to the poem, the book includes his seminal essay on sound and meaning in poetry, "The Poet's Point of View" (1966). All his poetry is available in "Complet Poems" (Bloodaxe Books, 2000).

EMILY DICKINSON: WILD NIGHTS: SELECTED POEMS selected and introduced by Miriam Chalk One of the most extraordinary poets of any era, American poetess Emily Dickinson wrote a huge amount of poetry (nearly 1800 poems). This book ranges from her early work to the late pieces, and features many of Dickinson's most famous pieces. This new edition includes many new poems. Emily Elizabeth Dickinson (December 10, 1830 - May 15, 1886) was born in Amherst, MA. Much of her later life was led in privacy, in the family home in Massachusetts. For some, she was a recluse, famous among locals for wearing white clothes, seldom travelled, preferred correspondence to meeting people in the żesh, and was known for talking to visitors thru a door. She wrote nearly 1800 poems, but only a few were published during her lifetime. The poetry of Emily Dickinson is among the strangest, the most compelling and the most direct in world literature. There is nothing else quite like it. Dickinson writes in short lyrics, often just eight lines long, often in regular quatrains, but often in irregular lines consisting of two half-lines joined in the middle by a dash (such as: ''Tis Honour - though I die' in "Had I presumed to hope"). Her subjects appear to be the traditional ones of poetry, blocked in with capital letters: God, Love, Hope, Time, Death, Nature, the Sea, the Sun, the World, Childhood, the Past, History, and so on. Yet what exactly is Dickinson discussing? Who is the 'I', the 'Thee', the 'we' and the 'you' in her poetry? This is where things become much more ambiguous. Dickinson is very clear at times in her poetry, until one considers deeper exactly what she is saying - but this ambiguity is one of the hallmarks and the delights of her art. Includes an Introduction, bibliography, notes. ISBN 9781861713636. www.crmoon.com

Bathsua Reginald Makin is an important figure in women's history. A child prodigy, she was thoroughly educated in classical and modern languages at a time when most women were illiterate. She was a middle-class Englishwoman who published her own poetry, established her own school, and wrote in defense of women's right to learning. Not only did she publish but she was also "a woman of great acquaintance" who sometimes acted on her own to earn a living. She enjoyed friendships with prominent Protestant families like those of Sir Simonds D'Ewes and the Raleghs; with the leaders the English Comenian movement, like John Milton's friend Samuel Hartlib or her own brother-in-law, John Pell; and with other learned women like Anna Maria Van Schurman and Lucy, Countess of Huntingdon. She lived in poverty, yet taught a countess and a princess. Historians of linguistics, education, and literature discuss her life and works.Unfortunately, the most basic facts of her life were not known until the 1960s: scholars thought she had grown up as an orphan, whereas she was the daughter of a loving schoolmaster; they thought she had written a pamphlet about debtor's prison that is, in fact, someone else's work; they did not realize that she had published her first book, an extraordinary collection of poetry in many languages, when she was sixteen years old. This biography gathers what is known about Makin, offers new materials from archival research, and interprets the events of Makin's life within the context of women's history in seventeenth-century England. The facts about Bathsua Makin offer a glimpse both into the life of one extraordinary woman and into the problems that learned women faced in this period. Knowing about her life also helps to explain both what the works that she published mean and how she managed to achieve her reputation as England's most learned woman.

Leaves of Grass (Wisehouse Classics - Authentic Reproduction of the 1855 First Edition) WISEHOUSE CLASSICS

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

ABOUT THIS EDITION: With exception of the titles of the different parts - which were added, for better navigation, from later editions - this edition presents an authentic reproduction of the original 1855 first edition of 'Leaves of Grass' by Walt Whitman. Taking into account that Whitman did much of the typesetting for the first edition himself, the editors of this reproduction, paid special attention not only to text itself but also to an authentic reproduction of pagination, paragraphing and linebreaks. LEAVES OF GRASS is a poetry collection by the American poet Walt Whitman (1819-1892). Though the first edition was published in 1855, Whitman spent most of his professional life writing and re-writing LEAVES OF GRASS, revising it multiple times until his death. This resulted in vastly different editions over four decades-the first a small book of twelve poems and the last a compilation of over 400 poems. LEAVES OF GRASS has its genesis in an essay called The Poet by Ralph Waldo Emerson, published in 1844, which expressed the need for the United States to have its own new and unique poet to write about the new country's virtues and vices. Whitman, reading the essay, consciously set out to answer Emerson's call as he began work on the first edition of LEAVES OF GRASS. Whitman, however, downplayed Emerson's influence, stating, "I was simmering, simmering, simmering; Emerson brought me to a boil." On May 15, 1855, Whitman registered the title LEAVES OF GRASS with the clerk of the United States District Court, Southern District of New Jersey, and received its copyright. The first edition was published in Brooklyn at the printing shop of two Scottish immigrants, James and Andrew Rome, whom Whitman had known since the 1840s, on July 4, 1855. Whitman paid for and did much of the typesetting for the first edition himself. The book did not include the author's name, instead offering an engraving by Samuel Hollyer depicting Whitman in work clothes and a jaunty hat, arms at his side. Early advertisements for the first edition appealed to "lovers of literary curiosities" as an oddity. Sales on the book were few but Whitman was not discouraged. The poems of LEAVES OF GRASS are loosely connected and each represents Whitman's celebration of his philosophy of life and humanity. This book is notable for its discussion of delight in sensual pleasures during a time when such candid displays were considered immoral. Where much previous poetry, especially English, relied on symbolism, allegory, and meditation on the religious and spiritual, LEAVES OF GRASS (particularly the first edition) exalted the body and the material world. Influenced by Ralph Waldo Emerson and the Transcendentalist movement, itself an offshoot of Romanticism, Whitman's poetry praises nature and the individual human's role in it. However, much like Emerson, Whitman does not diminish the role of the mind or the spirit; rather, he elevates the human form and the human mind, deeming both worthy of poetic praise.

Instinct for War - 2212825599

Instinct for War MIT Press Massachusets Institute of Tech nology

Inne 1

Stories about war are some of the oldest stories told--used to entertain, to glorify, to lament, to educate. An Instinct for War utilizes myriad tales of war to offer a remarkable look at one of humanity's oldest plagues. Roger Spiller excavates the essence of war and its evolution through the words and thoughts of those who led--and those who were led--into battle, moving from the perspective of an ancient Chinese emperor to Napoleon's command, from a Civil War soldier's final days to the particularities of today's small wars throughout the globe. Spiller combines a mastery of the primary sources with a vibrant historical imagination to locate a dozen turning points in the world's history of warfare that altered our understanding of war and its pursuit. We are conducted through profound moments by the voices of those who witnessed them and are given a graphic understanding of war, the devastating choices, the means by which battles are won and lost, and the enormous price exacted. Spiller's attention to the sights and sounds of battle enables us to feel the sting and menace of past violent conflicts as if they were today's. A bold departure from standard military history, An Instinct for War will challenge our understanding of how war forever alters the landscape--both human and geographic--and how individuals can alter the nature of battle. This collective portrait of the life of war offers unparalleled insight into our struggle for mastery over a fundamental instinct. In a graceful feat of imagination and trenchant analysis, Spiller presents 13 mostly first-person parables, meditations on moments when the 'nature and conduct of war' changed significantly. His narrators, invented almost from whole cloth or reconstructed from notable figures, reflect on the craft and meaning of war in settings ranging from Han China to a future North America...These inventive vignettes encompass a broad sweep of history and military thought.    --Publishers WeeklyImagine a military historian who can travel in time to past and future wars. That's what Roger Spiller, who taught at the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College in Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, does in his imaginative collection of 13 short stories. They stretch from ancient China to a 21st-century war 'so terrible it was beyond naming.'...His mostly first-person stories deal with Cortez's conquest of the Aztecs, what Civil War Gen. George McClellan tried to borrow from Napoleon and an investigation of a Japanese general after World War II. Spiller's stories can be read as parables. They neither celebrate nor condemn war but raise fundamental questions faced by soldiers and civilians.    --Bob Minzesheimer, USA TodayAn Instinct for War is a brilliantly unorthodox piece of work. Roger Spiller, now George C. Marshall Professor, emeritus, of Military History at the U.S. Army Command General Staff College, has written a strange, brave, and absolutely fascinating book...Spiller's fictions are always in the service of ideas. They dramatize aspects of the experience of war and of strategic thought over two and a half millennia, so they are fictions in the sense that Platonic dialogues are fictions...All these stories are powerful, most of them are disturbing, and each contains lessons that can be subtle, multiple, and contradictory, as so many of war's lessons are...Along the way Spiller displays great learning, always lightly worn; great moral seriousness, never ponderously displayed; and literary flair. This is a remarkable book, initially disconcerting and eventually enthralling.    --Fredric Smoler, American HeritageRoger Spiller is the least conventional of historians. For years, he has laboured on a book on the nature of war, and he has cast it in fictional form...This thought-provoking book represents an infusion of a lifetime's reading and thought about war, and renders the dimensions of conflict comprehensible to all. This is an achievement rare among historians, and Roger Spiller must now be reckoned among the notable writers about war.    --Brian Holden Reid, Times Literary SupplementWith An Instinct for War, Roger Spiller takes his place alongside John Keegan and Paul Fussell, those who are able to penetrate the armor of war itself and get at its horrible, vivifying, excruciating heart. The truths that accumulate here in this book are like the layers of a pearl, born in friction, imperceptibly accrued at first, but ultimately exquisitely valuable.    --Ken Burns, filmmaker An Instinct For War is a book of war-stories like no other I've read--a cultural history of the world's war-making, from ancient China and Greece to the Apocalypse that's just ahead of us. Spiller's skills include ventriloquism: he makes every war speak in a voice of its own, sometimes historical, sometimes not. His book is a tour de force that will engage every student of war, as it did me.    --Samuel Hynes, author of Flights of Passage and The Soldier's TaleRoger Spiller has written a remarkable book--a fusion of learning, reflection, and imagination--that will engage readers for whom the subject of war is too important to be left to either military historians or public officials.    --John Shy, Professor Emeritus of History, University of Michigan Spiller's knowledge of warfare is global in every sense of the word, spanning the earth and stretching from earliest recorded history to the present. This is military history at its very best.    --Peter Maslowski, author of Looking For A Hero: Staff Sergeant Joe Ronnie Hooper And The Vietnam War

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

"Ferdowsi's "Shahnama: " Millennial Perspectives" celebrates the ongoing reception, over the last thousand years, of a masterpiece of classical Persian poetry. The epic of the "Shahnama" or "Book of Kings" glorifies the spectacular achievements of Iranian civilization from its mythologized beginnings all the way to the historical time of the Arab Conquest, when the notionally unbroken sequence of Iranian "shah"s came to an end. The poet Hakim Abu'l-Qasim, who composed this epic, was renamed Ferdowsi or "the man of Paradise" in recognition of his immortalizing artistic accomplishment. Even now, over a thousand years after his death in 1010 CE, the impact of Ferdowsi's epic poetry reverberates in the intellectual and artistic life of Persianate cultures all over the world. "Ferdowsi's "Shahnama: " Millennial Perspectives" undertakes a new look at the reception of Ferdowsi's poetry, especially in the twelfth, thirteenth, fourteenth, and fifteenth centuries CE. Such a reception, the contributors to this book argue, actively engages the visual as well as the verbal arts of Iranian civilization. The paintings and other art objects illustrating the "Shahnama" over the ages are as vitally relevant as the words of Ferdowsi's poetry.

"Magnificent . . . A tour de force of literature and love."--"Vogue" ""Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?" is raucous. It hums with a dark refulgence from its first pages. . . . Singular and electric . . . [Winterson's] life with her adoptive parents was often appalling, but it made her the writer she is."--"The New York Times" "[Winterson is] one of the most daring and inventive writers of our time--searingly honest yet effortlessly lithe as she slides between forms, exuberant and unerring, demanding emotional and intellectual expansion of herself and of us. . . . In" Why Be Happy, ," [Winterson's] emotional life is laid bare . . . [in] a bravely frank narrative of truly coming undone. For someone in love with disguises, Winterson's openness is all the more moving; there's nothing left to hide, and nothing left to hide behind."--"Elle" Jeanette Winterson's bold and revelatory novels have earned her widespread acclaim, establishing her as a major figure in world literature. She has written some of the most admired books of the past few decades, including her internationally best-selling first novel, "Oranges Are Not the Only Fruit," the story of a young girl adopted by Pentecostal parents, that is now often required reading in contemporary fiction classes. "Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal? "is a memoir about a life's work to find happiness. It is a book full of stories: about a girl locked out of her home, sitting on the doorstep all night; about a religious zealot disguised as a mother who has two sets of false teeth and a revolver in the dresser, waiting for Armageddon; about growing up in a north England industrial town now changed beyond recognition; about the universe as a cosmic dustbin. It is the story of how a painful past, which Winterson thought she had written over and repainted, rose to haunt her later in life, sending her on a journey into madness and out again, in search of her biological mother. It is also a book about other people's literature, one that shows how fiction and poetry can form a string of guiding lights, a life raft that supports us when we are sinking. Witty, acute, fierce, and celebratory, " Why Be Happy When You Could Be Normal?" is a tough-minded search for belonging--for love, identity, home, and a mother.
