Two volumes of studies were prepared in connection with the Jubilee International Conference celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the First Lecture on the History of Art at Vilna / Wilno / Vilnius University on September 14?16, 2010 in Toruń.On September 15, 1810, professor of ?etching and the literature of fine arts? Joseph (Józef) Saunders (London 1773 ? Krzemieniec, Volhynia 1854) delivered the lecture at the Faculty of Literature and Art, entitled Discours sur l?influence ou l?utilité des arts imitatifs (On the Influence and Use of Mimetic Arts), published in Polish under the title O wpływie i użytku sztuk naśladowniczych in ?Pamiętnik Magnety-czny Wileński? (?Vilna Magnetic Diary?) in 1816. The bicentenary of the first universi-ty lecture on the history of art at the Vil-na University is simultaneously the bicen-tenary of the research into art in Poland, Lithuania and Central-Eastern Europe. Af-ter World War II, the tradition of the Vilna University was inherited in Poland by the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.The book ? with 71 studies prepared by scientists from 14 countries ? is devoted to the past of art history as a scientific disci-pline and its contribution to creating na-tional and aesthetic identity of the coun-tries of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, the majority of which were de-prived of independence and subordinat-ed to partitioning of the nations in the 19th century, and in the 20th century, subject-ed to the pressure of totalitarian states. In the 19th century, these nations were often united in their fight for independence and democratic civic rights. Research, as well as providing patronage to artistic heritage, became an important element of creating national cultures. It began with the inter-est in antiquity, typical in the first half of the 19th century, and expanded to estab-lishing of institutions of culture and learn-ing (scientific societies, art schools, muse-ums, periodicals), and to creating univer-sity-based history of art. The scope of the book also encompasses national minori-ties, such as Jews, Armenians, Tatars and the Finno-Ugric peoples. Different artistic, cultural, historical, and religious traditions of states, nations and national minorities, as well as a variety of relationships of art and political and social ideologies exerted their influence on art historians, conduct-ing research on this part of Europe.Important anniversary evokes reflection both on the complicated past of the his-tory of art and on its present state in this part of Europe, the region which, after the October Revolution and then World War II, was separated from the rest of the conti-nent by a wall.Vol. 2:? This book investigates the development of Serbian national identity in the context of the culture of memory that developed out of the discourse on Old Serbia, in the 19th and early 20th century. The term Old Serbia in the Serbian national discourse describes the lands once part of the medieval Serbian state, including the south of the Principality of Serbia and the adjacent lands under Ottoman rule from the 15th until the 20th century: the vilayets of Kosovo, Monastir and Salonica. Our hypothesis is that the discourse on Old Serbia became an element of collective remembrance only through the ideological deconstruction of the folk traditions, legends, and myths that formed the image of medieval Serbian history, in the second half of the 19th century. The political context of this process was Serbia?s strategic decision to expand towards the south, which emerged after the Congress of Berlin. The ideological concept of Old Serbia was created, and molded in order to correspond with the Serbia's new geo-strategic aims. This ideology of an ?Old Serbia? was the counterpart of the two other great ideas of the 19th century Balkan nationalisms: the Megali Idea and San Stefano Bulgaria. Our analysis of the mythical and ideological roots of Old Serbia (Chapter I), the production of memory of Old Serbia in textual, graphical and visual sources (Chapter II), and the reception of Old Serbia in visual arts and poetry (Chapter III) shows that discourse on Old Serbia was an important element of the national identity among the Serbs in the late 19th and early 20th century. The principal influence of the discourse on Old Serbia on the formation of Serbian national identity was its ability to connect as an unbroken bond, the Serbian Medieval Ages and modern state created after the uprisings against the Ottoman rule (1804?1815). The main source of this development was the contemporary Serbian intellectual, cultural and political elite and its construction of this continuity and permanent identity between the modern and medieval Serbian states, particularly with the 14th century empire of the Emperor Stefan Dušan. The bond between these two traditions was embodied in the tradition of Old Serbia.

„Polish Libraries” is a periodical annual published by the National Library of Poland, presenting theoretical and practical issues related to librarianship, and whose aim is to popularize scientific achievements of the Polish library community. In the third volume of “Polish Libraries” much space is devoted to the history of the microfilming of the National Library's collections, from its beginnings in 1950, to the project Bosch, which closed the era of microfilming collections. Also noteworthy is the article of Zbigniew Mentzel, the eminent journalist, describing the private archive of Leszek Kolakowski, a world-renowned Polish philosopher, historian of ideas and writer, donated to the National Library in 2010 by his widow, Mrs. Tamara Kołakowska. Also in the volume is a very interesting article describing the collection of manuscripts of Józef Elsner, one of the most important musical collections in the National Library. This collection, numbering 33 works of the composer, was taken during World War II to Berlin (as spoils of war), and in 1951 was returned to the National Library. „Polish Libraries” to angielskojęzyczny periodyk wydawany przez Bibliotekę Narodową, adresowany do zagranicznych środowisk bibliotekarskich. Jego zadaniem jest przedstawianie wybranych zagadnień z dziejów i teraźniejszości polskiego bibliotekarstwa zainteresowanym tą problematyką cudzoziemcom. Nawiązuje do wydawanych przez Bibliotekę Narodową tomów pod nazwą „Polish Libraries Today”. W najnowszym, trzecim tomie rocznika „Polish Libraries” najwięcej miejsca poświęcono historii mikrofilmowania zbiorów przez Bibliotekę Narodową od jego początków w 1950 roku do projektu Bosch, który około 2002 roku zamknął erę mikrofilmowania zbiorów. Na uwagę zasługuje również artykuł wybitnego dziennikarza, Zbigniewa Mentzla, opisujący prywatne archiwum Leszka Kołakowskiego, światowej sławy polskiego filozofa, historyka idei i pisarza, które rok po jego śmierci w 2010 roku, przekazała jako dar dla Biblioteki Narodowej jego Wdowa, pani Tamara Kołakowska. W tomie trzecim niezwykle interesujący jest również artykuł traktujący o jednej z najważniejszych kolekcji muzycznych w zbiorach Biblioteki Narodowej, zbiorze rękopisów Józefa Elsnera. Kolekcja ta, licząca 33 dzieła kompozytora, została w czasie wojny wywieziona do Berlina i w 1951 roku zwrócona Bibliotece Narodowej.

The publishing history of the eleven chapters that comprise the contents of this second volume of Native Languages of the Americas is rather different from that of the thirteen that appeared in Volume I of this twin set late last year. Original ver sions of five articles, respectively, by Barthel, Grimes, Longacre, Mayers, and Suarez, were first published in Part II of Current Trends in Linguistics, Vol. 4, subtitled lbero-A merican and Caribbean Linguistics (1968), having been com missioned by the undersigned in his capacity as editor of the fourteen volume series which was distributed in twenty-one tomes between 1963 and 1976. McClaran's article is reprinted from Part III of Vol. 10. Linguistics in North America (1973) and the two by Kaufman and Rensch were in Part I I of Vol. 11, Diachronic, A real. and Typological Linguistics (1973 ). There are three contributions by Landar: earlier versions of two appeared in Vol. 10 ("North American Indian Languages. " accompanied by William Sorsby's maps of tribal groups of North and Central America), and in Vol. 13, Historiography of Linguistics (1975); however, his checklist of South and Central American Indian languages was freshly compiled for this book. Generous financial support for preparing the materials included in this project came from several agencies of the United States government, to wit: the National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation, for Vols. 10 and 13, and the Office of Education, for Vols. 4 and 11; in addition.
