Mikuni and Murphy trace the origins of Japan's policy trap far back into history, in the measures taken by Japan's officials to preserve their economic independence in what they saw as a hostile world. Mobilizing every resource to accumulate precious dollars, the authorities eventually found themselves coping with a hoard they could neither use nor exchange. To counteract the deflationary impact, Japanese authorities resorted to the creation of yen liabilities unrelated to production via the largest financial bubble in history. The bursting of that bubble was followed by massive public works spending that has resulted in an explosion in public sector debt. Japan's Policy Trap points to the likelihood that Japan will run out of ways to support its vast pile of dollar claims.Should the day come when those claims can no longer be supported, the world could see a horrific deflationary spiral in Japan, a crash in the global value of the dollar, or both. The effects would reach far beyond Japan's borders. Mikuni and Murphy suggest that a reduction in Japan's surplus must be accompanied by a reduction in deficits somewhere else --most obviously through far-reaching shifts in the American economy.

Jego gra odznaczała się czarem dźwięku, głębią i dramatyczną siłą, stanowiąc zarazem kwintesencję polskości. W repertuarze bowiem, obok utworów własnych (wśród których uznanie zyskały m.in. Fantazja polska, opera Manru i Menuet G-dur), poczesne miejsce zajmowała muzyka Fryderyka Chopina. Sławę i zgromadzony rychło majątek artysta wykorzystywał do wspierania sprawy narodowej. W 1910 r., na 500-lecie zwycięstwa pod Grunwaldem, ufundował w Krakowie słynny pomnik Władysława Jagiełły, jak głosi napis na nim: PRAOJCOM NA CHWAŁĘ, BRACIOM NA OTUCHĘ. Płomienna mowa wygłoszona podczas odsłonięcia tego pomnika do rzesz rodaków z trzech zaborów, w której postulował jedność narodu w dążeniu do niepodległości, wywarła ogromne wrażenie i zainicjowała jego działalność polityczną. Podczas I wojny światowej organizował komitety pomocy ofiarom wojny w Polsce, polskie siły zbrojne, a po koncertach przemawiał, agitując na rzecz Ojczyzny. Dzięki jego kontaktom i wpływom w USA sprawa niepodległości Polski zaistniała na forum międzynarodowym. Zaowocowało to słynnym orędziem prezydenta Wilsona z 1917 r. i deklaracją premierów Francji, Włoch i Wielkiej Brytanii z 1918 r. o konieczności odbudowy niezawisłej Polski jako elementu nowego ładu w Europie. Powróciwszy do kraju, udał się w grudniu 1918 r. do Poznania, gdzie powitały go entuzjastycznie tłumy rodaków. Przemówienie (wygłoszone z okna hotelu), wzywające do jedności wszystkich stronnictw i stanów w dziele odbudowy Polski, stało się zarzewiem zwycięskiego powstania wielkopolskiego. Witany wszędzie z rosnącym entuzjazmem, po przybyciu do Warszawy złożył deklarację, której pozostał wierny: służyć nie jakiemukolwiek stronnictwu, a jedynie Polsce. Wkrótce objął stanowisko premiera i ministra spraw zagranicznych. Na konferencji pokojowej w Paryżu, wraz z Romanem Dmowskim, usilnie zabiegał o zabezpieczenie interesów i wzmocnienie autorytetu Polski. Rozstrzygnięcia Traktatu Wersalskiego, na które polscy negocjatorzy, mimo najlepszej woli, mieli ograniczony wpływ, nie satysfakcjonowały klasy politycznej i opinii publicznej. Trudności wewnętrzne w odbudowującym się kraju spowodowały upadek rządu Paderewskiego w grudniu 1919 r. i jego decyzję o emigracji (do 1921 r. pozostawał delegatem Polski w Lidze Narodów). W 1921 r. Albania is the latest addition to ITMB's European map series. Lan and I visited the country last October to ground-truth our artwork before publishing and were pleasantly surprised to find good quality roads, friendly people, attractive scenery, and a quiet 'get-ahead' attitude. Although still underdeveloped, tourism in Albania is amongst the fastest growing in Europe. With its Greek, Roman and Ottoman architecture and its natural beauty, including Mediterranean beaches and the Albanian Alps, this is not at all surprising. The country had a reputation during the Cold War of being rather secretive and unfriendly, but it is the only formerly-communist-run country to have its totalitarian government hold a referendum on future governing systems (in 1992) and respected the will of the people as expressed and arranged for democratic elections. The country has being improving its infrastructure ever since and hopes to apply for EU membership this year. Albania has been an independent country for 100 years - not always wisely governed, but independent nonetheless! Before perestroika there was only one organization for women, and that was the government-controlled Soviet Women's Committee. In the last few years sixty-two have been registered, six newspapers for women are now published, there is a TV programme called "Career Woman", and we have four feminist organizations. In devoting this issue to women's writing we are not proposing a rigid approach to Russian literature on the basis of gender, just as age or race strike us as only marginally relevant. It just so happened that in our search for new and interesting works of literature we have found an abundance of excellent stories by women writers. Some of these we are offering here for your attention as representative of woman's view of the world, and her present search for identity. To a large extent Russia's women are bearing the brunt of the present upheavals in our society.
