Godard On Godard Hachette Books

Jean-Luc Godard, like many of his European contemporaries, came to filmmaking through film criticism. This collection of essays and interviews, ranging from his early efforts for La Gazette du Cinema to his later writings for Cahiers du Cinema, reflects his dazzling intelligence, biting wit, maddening judgments, and complete unpredictability. In writing about Hitchcock, Welles, Bergman, Truffaut, Bresson, and Renoir, Godard is also writing about himself--his own experiments, obsessions, discoveries. This book offers evidence that he may be even more original as a thinker about film than as a director. Covering the period of 1950--1967, the years of Breathless, A Woman Is a Woman, My Life to Live, Alphaville, La Chinoise, and Weekend, this book of writings is an important document and a fascinating study of a vital stage in Godard's career. With commentary by Tom Milne and Richard Roud, and an extensive new foreword by Annette Michelson that reassesses Godard in light of his later films, here is an outrageous self-portrait by a director who, even now, continues to amaze and bedevil, and to chart new directions for cinema and for critical thought about its history.

One Last Scream Pinnacle Books

Powieść zagranicznaSensacja. Thiller. Kryminał

What's in a title? In the case of ONE LAST SCREAM by Kevin O'Brien, plenty. O'Brien has been around for a while. ACTORS, his first novel, was published in 1987, but since 2001 he has averaged a book a year, with such efforts as MAKE THEM CRY, WATCH THEM DIE and LEFT FOR DEAD. His books stand on their own, and the titles that hint at pain and sudden end to mortal life are not kidding around. As one would surmise from the title ONE LAST SCREAM, nothing goes gently into a night that is anything but good. However, don't think that O'Brien focuses solely on gore to keep the action moving. As frightening as his work may be, he constructs a complex and confounding mystery to support his plots, one that will keep you puzzled, guessing and (for our purposes, most importantly) reading. And ONE LAST SCREAM has quite a puzzle. It begins with an abduction, quickly moves to a multiple murder, and then things really get busy. The person at the core of all this activity is Amelia Faraday, an attractive young woman who has much to be thankful for but remains troubled by vague and disturbing emotional complaints. Her life is changed forever when her adopted parents and aunt are brutally and inexplicably murdered. At first it appears to be a case of murder-suicide, yet Amelia has vivid memories of committing the murders. To make matters worse, her phantom recollections closely coincide with what is found at the crime scene. Karen Carlisle, Amelia's therapist, is quick to point out all the reasons why she could not have been responsible, yet as time passes and her behavior becomes more and more bizarre, it appears that Amelia is guilty of murder and more. In an attempt to prove her innocence, Carlisle and Amelia's uncle begin an investigation into her past, one that will resolve not only a series of increasingly frequent murders in the present but also a number of puzzling disappearances in the past --- all of which seem to be tied directly to Amelia. There is no other way to say it: ONE LAST SCREAM will creep you out. A number of passages led me to scream, "Oh my gosh! Oh shoot! No! Don't do it!" (or words to that effect), even as I jumped ever deeper into it. The book's strongest suit, however, is its baffling mystery, which the author manages to wrap up in the last 100 pages while never letting the action, suspense or violence lag for a moment. If you're not a fan of O'Brien already, ONE LAST SCREAM will make you a member of the club.

"Richly detailed. . . an intimate portrait of a diplomat." -New YorkerNow in paperback with a new epilogueIn this revealing, funny, and inspiring memoir, seven-time New York Times bestselling author and former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright-among the world's most admired and tireless public servants-reflects on the challenge of continuing one's career far beyond the normal age of retirement. In 2001, when Madeleine Albright was leaving office as America's first female secretary of state, interviewers asked her how she wished to be remembered. "I don't want to be remembered," she answered. "I am still here and have much more I intend to do. As difficult as it might seem, I want every stage of my life to be more exciting than the last."In that time of transition, the former Secretary considered the possibilities: she could write, teach, travel, give speeches, start a business, fight for democracy, help to empower women, campaign for favored political candidates, spend more time with her grandchildren. Instead of choosing one or two, she decided to do it all. For nearly twenty years, Albright has been in constant motion, navigating half a dozen professions, clashing with presidents and prime ministers, learning every day. Since leaving the State Department, she has blazed her own trail-and given voice to millions who yearn for respect, regardless of gender, background, or age.Hell and Other Destinations reveals this remarkable figure at her bluntest, funniest, most intimate, and most serious. It is the tale of our times anchored in lessons for all time, narrated by an extraordinary woman with a matchless zest for life.

'I daresay I shall get through my trouble somehow.' Esther Waters is a young, working-class woman with strong religious beliefs who takes a position as a kitchen-maid at a horse-racing estate. She is seduced and abandoned, and forced to support herself and her illegitimate child in any way that she can. The novel depicts with extraordinary candour Esther's struggles against prejudice and injustice, and the growth of her character as she determines to protect her son. Her moving story is set against the backdrop of a world of horse racing, betting, and public houses, whose vivid depiction led James Joyce to call Esther Waters 'the best novel of modern English life'. Controversial and influential on its first appearance in 1894, the book opened up a new direction for the English realist tradition. Unflinching in its depiction of the dark and sordid side of Victorian culture, it remains one of the great novels of London life and labour in the 1890s. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.

My true wife and the best friend I ever had," wrote Ted Hughes after Assia Wevill's 1969 suicide. Long seen as the woman who lured Hughes away from Sylvia Plath, Wevill has remained a mysterious figure. Now, for the first time Yehuda Koren and Eilat Negev tell the story of Wevill's remarkable life and the seven years she spent with Hughes before killing herself, and their daughter, in a manner that inevitably recalled Plath's suicide six years earlier. Drawing on previously unavailable papers, including Wevill's diaries and intimate correspondence with Hughes, Koren and Negev offer a gripping portrayal of the uneasy life the couple shared under Plath's long shadow.

The bestselling voice of Europe's fastest-growing, fastest-living city: the new Berlin. 'The little jewellery box also held the red coral bracelet from Nikolai Sergeyevich. Its six hundred and seventy-five little coral beads were strung onto a silken thread, and they glowed as red as rage. My great-grandmother put the hairbrush down in her lap. She closed her eyes for a long time. Then she opened her eyes again, took the red coral bracelet from the little box and fastened it around her left wrist. Her skin was very white. That evening, for the first time in three years, she shared a meal with my great-grandfather.' Coral bracelets 'as red as rage' from Russian lovers; a sad old woman who nonetheless 'sometimes sang and winked with her left eye and laughed till the tears came'; country houses 'away from Berlin, linden trees out front, chestnuts in the back, sky above': 'The Summer House, Later' is an elegant, measured, reflective collection of stories which captures beautifully the promise of bright colours lying just out of reach of our grey daily routines.Set in and around Europe's fastest-growing, fastest-living city, these stories take as their starting point the monotony of modern urban life - the endless antennas and chimneys, the pigeons in the gutters - and looks beyond them to 'the narrow strip of sky over the rooftops'. The literary sensation of the year in her native Germany, Judith Hermann is a wonderfully talented young writer whose ability to find drama and beauty in the smallest, most trivial moments makes 'The Summer House, Later' a very special debut indeed.
