A New York Times bestselling author, National Book Award finalist, and "one of our greatest living writers" (Shondaland) reimagines the love story in this fresh and seductive novel about a young woman seeking joy while healing from loss.Feyi Adekola wants to learn how to be alive again. It's been five years since the accident that killed the love of her life and she's almost a new person now-an artist with her own studio, and sharing a brownstone apartment with her ride-or-die best friend, Joy, who insists it's time for Feyi to ease back into the dating scene. Feyi isn't ready for anything serious, but a steamy encounter at a rooftop party cascades into a whirlwind summer she could have never imagined: a luxury trip to a tropical island, decadent meals in the glamorous home of a celebrity chef, and a major curator who wants to launch her art career. She's even started dating the perfect guy, but their new relationship might be sabotaged before it has a chance by the dangerous thrill Feyi feels every time she locks eyes with the one person in the house who is most definitely off-limits. This new life she asked for just got a lot more complicated, and Feyi must begin her search for real answers. Who is she ready to become? Can she release her past and honor her grief while still embracing her future? And, of course, there's the biggest question of all-how far is she willing to go for a second chance at love? Akwaeke Emezi's vivid and passionate writing takes us deep into a world of possibility and healing, and the constant bravery of choosing love against all odds.

Joseph Conrad Collection Including (unabridged) Benediction Classics

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) is considered to be one of the great novelists in English. His novels often have a nautical setting and his characters suffer trials in the midst of an indifferent universe. His masterful prose is second to none and his Polish background brings a romantic or tragic style that was previously unknown in English novels. The "Heart of Darkness" is a true classic. A small book but every word is powerfully and perfectly placed. It is a dark allegory full of suspense, adventure, character development and psychological drama. The story is told by Marlow who on his journey up the Congo meets and becomes fascinated with Mr Kurtz who dominates the local people. This is considered to be Conrad's greatest and most enigmatic story. The" Secret Agent" is a piercing sociological evaluation of the entire culture of the western world and the many flawed sub-cultures that emerge from it. Set in London, each group has an anti-hero who epitomises the problems with a culture that is entirely based on self-interest. There is a broken time line in the novel that heightens the mystery of the identity of the tragic victim who dies early on in the story. "Lord Jim" is a sea-faring tale, but more than that is it a story of Jim's lifelong efforts to atone for an act of instinctive cowardice. This then became the classic tale that gave birth to a new genre of literature. "Nostromo" is another sea-faring epic and a complex tale of colonial life in Latin America. In this book there are flashbacks, people telling stories within stories which adds both to the complexity and the depth. The tale draws you in with a sense of foreboding as the lure of silver, greed, capitalist exploitation and rebellion evolve. "Victory" centers around the character Axel Heyst, a complex character who wishes to cut himself off from people to avoid suffering. He settles on a remote island in the Malay Archipelago. However, he is hated and misunderstood by the evil innkeeper Schomberg and then rescues a young English woman, Lena. The take is one of adventure and complex relationships, but ultimately about the incredible healing power of love.

Endurance Bloomsbury Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Shortlisted for the William Hill Sports Book of the Year. In the summer of 1952 Emil Zatopek became the king of the running world with an unprecedented distance treble at the Olympic Games in Helsinki. Together with his wife Dana, who won another gold medal in the javelin, they were the embodiment of sporting romance. Born on the same day, they were champions on the same day too. Yet in 1968 this affable but eccentric Czech solider was betrayed by his Communist paymasters and cast out into wilderness. Hidden from world view, monitored by the secret police and forced to live in a caravan in mining country, he became the invisible hero. Endurance is the first biography to document the remarkable rise, fall and rehabilitation of a man voted the 'greatest runner of all time' by Runner's World. It is also the story of a golden age of sport played out against a backdrop of Cold War politics and paranoia. From the London Olympics of 1948 to Czech concentration camps, this is an uplifting and harrowing story of survival. As Emil rises to global fame, his old coach is locked up and tortured by StB henchmen. Their diverging paths expose the fickleness of popularity and eventually cross again when Zatopek's world is torn asunder. All both men can do is endure. Due to extensive access to those involved, including Dana herself, Broadbent has written a vivid history involving blood and guns and a love that sustained the cruellest twists of fate. From heady nights at White City to the brave resistance during the Prague Spring, this is a book that plants the son of a carpenter at the very centre of a revolution. Whether talking to his rivals on the track or Red Army troops as tanks roll into Prague, Zatopek's humanity shines through and carries all.

Shortlisted for the 2014 Man Booker Prize Shortlisted for the 2014 Goldsmiths Prize Set in the future - a world where the past is a dangerous country, not to be talked about or visited - J is a love story of incomparable strangeness, both tender and terrifying. Howard Jacobson, one of Britain's greatest novelists and winner of the 2010 Man Booker prize, has written a novel which "may well come to be seen as the dystopian British novel of its times." (John Burnside, Guardian). Two people fall in love, not yet knowing where they have come from or where they are going. Kevern doesn't know why his father always drew two fingers across his lips when he said a word starting with a J. It wasn't then, and isn't now, the time or place to be asking questions. Ailinn too has grown up in the dark about who she was or where she came from. On their first date Kevern kisses the bruises under her eyes. He doesn't ask who hurt her. Brutality has grown commonplace. They aren't sure if they have fallen in love of their own accord, or whether they've been pushed into each other's arms. But who would have pushed them, and why?Hanging over the lives of all the characters in this novel is a momentous catastrophe - a past event shrouded in suspicion, denial and apology, now referred to as What Happened, If It Happened. J is a novel to be talked about in the same breath as Nineteen Eighty-Four and Brave New World, thought-provoking and life-changing. It is like no other novel that Howard Jacobson has written.

NEW YORK TIMES BEST SELLER Sharon Stone tells her own story: a journey of healing, love, and purpose. Not your typical Hollywood autobiography. Brutally honest, restless and questing.   O, The Oprah Magazine Sharon Stone, one of the most renowned actresses in the world, suffered a massive stroke that cost her not only her health, but her career, family, fortune, and global fame. In The Beauty of Living Twice, Stone chronicles her efforts to rebuild her life and writes about her slow road back to wholeness and health. In a business that doesn t accept failure, in a world where too many voices are silenced, Stone found the power to return, the courage to speak up, and the will to make a difference in the lives of men, women, and children around the globe.Over the course of these intimate pages, as candid as a personal conversation, Stone talks about her pivotal roles, her life-changing friendships, her worst disappointments, and her greatest accomplishments. She reveals how she went from a childhood of trauma and violence to a career in an industry that in many ways echoed those same assaults, under cover of money and glamour. She describes the strength and meaning she found in her children, and in her humanitarian efforts. And ultimately, she shares how she fought her way back to find not only her truth, but her family s reconciliation and love.Stone made headlines not just for her beauty and her talent, but for her candor and her refusal to play nice, and it s those same qualities that make this memoir so powerful. The Beauty of Living Twice is a book for the wounded and a book for the survivors; it s a celebration of women s strength and resilience, a reckoning, and a call to activism. It is proof that it s never too late to raise your voice and speak out.

Britannicus, Phaedra, Athaliah Oxford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Jean Racine (1639-99) remains to this day the greatest of French poetic dramatists. Britannicus (1669), the first play in this volume, takes its themes from Roman history: the setting is bloody and treacherous court of the Emperor Nero. Phaedra (1677) dramatizes the Greek myth of Phaedra's doomed love for her stepson Hippolytus. Athaliah (1691), Racine's last and perhaps finest play, draws on the Old Testament story of Athaliah, Queen of Judah and worshipper of Baal, who is threatened and finally forced to concede victory to Joash, a son of the house of David and survivor of Athaliah's massacres. Racine's tragedies portray characters wrestling with ambition, treachery, religion, and love. In this translation, specially commissioned for The World's Classics series, C.H. Sisson has captured admirably the lucidity of Racine's language, both analytic and passionate, and the rhythm of his four-part Alexandrine, a combination that previous translators have consistently failed to achieve. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
