One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest Penguin

Powieści i opowiadania

Boisterous, ribald, and ultimately shattering, Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest is the seminal novel of the 1960s that has left an indelible mark on the literature of our time. Here is the unforgettable story of a mental ward and its inhabitants, especially the tyrannical Big Nurse Ratched and Randle Patrick McMurphy, the brawling, fun-loving new inmate who resolves to oppose her. We see the struggle through the eyes of Chief Bromden, the seemingly mute half-Indian patient who witnesses and understands McMurphy's heroic attempt to do battle with the awesome powers that keep them all imprisoned. This morning the lockworks rattle strange; it's not a regular visitor at the door. An Escort Man's voice calls down, edgy and impatient, 'Admission, come sign for him,' and the black boys go. Admission. Everybody stops playing cards and Monopoly, turns towards the day-room door. Most days I'd be out sweeping the hall and see who they're signing in, but this morning, like I explain to you, the Big Nurse put a thousand pounds down me and I can't budge out of the chair. Most days I'm the first one to see the Admission, watch him creep in the door and slide along the wall and stand scared till the black boys come sign for him and take him into the shower room, where they strip him and leave him shivering with the door open while they all three run grinning up and down the halls looking for the Vaseline. 'We need that Vaseline,' they'll tell the Big Nurse, 'for the thermometer.' She looks from one to the other: 'I'm sure you do,' and hands them a jar holds at least a gallon, 'but mind you boys don't group up in there.' Then I see two, maybe all three of them in there, in that shower room with the Admission, running that thermometer around in the grease till it's coated the size of your finger, crooning,

Elizabeth Gaskell?s first novel depicts nothing less than the great clashes between capital and labour, which arose from rapid industrialisation and problems of trade in the mid-nineteenth century. But these clashes are dramatized through personal struggles. John Barton has to reconcile his personal conscience with his socialist duty, risking his life and liberty in the process. His daughter Mary is caught between two lovers, from opposing classes ? worker and manufacturer. And at the heart of the narrative lies a murder which implicates them all.Mary Barton was published in 1848, at a time of great social ferment in Europe, and it reflects its revolutionary moment through an English lens. Elizabeth Gaskell wrote her first novel about the world in which she lived ? Manchester at the height of the industrial revolution. As the wife of a Unitarian minister she was solidly middle-class;but she also had close contact with the working classes around her, sympathised with them, and represented their extreme distresses in her fiction. She is radical in taking on their dialect, imagining the realities of their lives, and placing a working woman at the centre of her fiction. If to our eyes her vision remains limited, it was an honest vision, for which she was much criticised in her own time, by her own class.

An Autobiography like Something Out of the Arabian NightsIn this lively and witty autobiography, Essad Bey, a.k.a. Lev Nussimbaum, tells us the story of his childhood in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan, and of his flight from the Russian Revolution in 1917, which brought him first straight through the Caucasus, then to Istanbul - where this book concludes - and finally to Berlin. When Essad Bey speaks of the people of the Caucasus and their customs so strange to us, a sort of anthropological cabinet of curiosities unfolds before our eyes, and we cannot help but be astonished. All the while, through his affectionate and sometimes openly ironic words, even the excesses of the Revolution sound like children's pranks and his hair-raising escape like an adventure novel. Blood and Oil in the Orient is an informative and entertaining book; in the 1930s, it was a bestseller in the U.S. and Germany.

Mornings in Jenin is a multi-generational story about a Palestinian family. Forcibly removed from the olive-farming village of Ein Hod by the newly formed state of Israel in 1948, the Abulhejos are displaced to live in canvas tents in the Jenin refugee camp. We follow the Abulhejo family as they live through a half century of violent history. Amidst the loss and fear, hatred and pain, as their tents are replaced by more forebodingly permanent cinderblock huts, there is always the waiting, waiting to return to a lost home. The novel's voice is that of Amal, the granddaughter of the old village patriarch, a bright, sensitive girl who makes it out of the camps, only to return years later, to marry and bear a child. Through her eyes, with her evolving vision, we get the story of her brothers, one who is kidnapped to be raised Jewish, one who will end with bombs strapped to his middle. But of the many interwoven stories, stretching backward and forward in time, none is more important than Amal's own. Her story is one of love and loss, of childhood and marriage and parenthood, and finally the need to share her history with her daughter, to preserve the greatest love she has.Set against one of the twentieth century's most intractable political conflicts, Mornings in Jenin is a deeply human novel - a novel of history, identity, friendship, love, terrorism, surrender, courage, and hope. Its power forces us to take a fresh look at one of the defining conflicts of our lifetimes.

The slogan on board became "It's your ship," and Benfold was soon recognized far and wide as a model of naval efficiency. How did Abrashoff do it?Against the backdrop of today's United States Navy-Benfold was a key player in our Persian Gulf fleet-Abrashoff shares his secrets of successful management including: *See the ship through the eyes of the crew: By soliciting a sailor's suggestions, Abrashoff drastically reduced tedious chores that provided little additional value. *Communicate, communicate, communicate: The more Abrashoff communicated the plan, the better the crew's performance. His crew would eventually call him "Megaphone Mike," since they heard from him so often. *Create discipline by focusing on purpose: Discipline skyrocketed when Abrashoff's crew believed that what they were doing was important. Listen aggressively: After learning that many sailors wanted to use the GI Bill, Abrashoff brought a test official aboard the ship-and held the SATs forty miles off the Iraqi coast. From achieving amazing cost savings to winning the highest gunnery score in the Pacific Fleet, Captain Abrashoff's extraordinary campaign sent shock waves through the U.S. Navy. It can help you change the course of your ship, no matter where your business battles are fought.

A History of the World in 100 Objects Penguin Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Neil MacGregor's "A History of the World in 100 Objects" takes a bold, original approach to human history, exploring past civilizations through the objects that defined them. Encompassing a grand sweep of human history, "A History of the World in 100 Objects" begins with one of the earliest surviving objects made by human hands, a chopping tool from the Olduvai gorge in Africa, and ends with objects which characterise the world we live in today. Seen through MacGregor's eyes, history is a kaleidoscope - shifting, interconnected, constantly surprising, and shaping our world today in ways that most of us have never imagined. A stone pillar tells us about a great Indian emperor preaching tolerance to his people; Spanish pieces of eight tell us about the beginning of a global currency; and an early Victorian tea-set speaks to us about the impact of empire. An intellectual and visual feast, this is one of the most engrossing and unusual history books published in years. "Brilliant, engagingly written, deeply researched". (Mary Beard, "Guardian")."A triumph: hugely popular, and rightly lauded as one of the most effective and intellectually ambitious initiatives in the making of 'public history' for many decades". ("Sunday Telegraph"). "Highly intelligent, delightfully written and utterly absorbing". (Timothy Clifford, "Spectator"). "This is a story book, vivid and witty, shining with insights, connections, shocks and delights". (Gillian Reynolds, "Daily Telegraph"). Neil MacGregor has been Director of the British Museum since August 2002. His latest book, "Shakespeare's Restless World" is an enthralling exploration of Shakespeare's world, and of the minds of his audiences, based on Neil MacGregor's new 20-part BBC Radio 4 series. MacGregor was previously Director of the National Gallery in London from 1987 to 2002.

Rabbi Itshak Luria, known as the Ari or Arizal was born in Jerusalem in 1534, in his short life he influenced greatly the learning and development of the Kabbalah. No one as of today, dares to refute or contradict any of his teachings. The level of his knowledge and revelation was and still is far above the possible comprehension of most men. The Ari overflowed with Torah. He was expert in Scripture, Mishnah, Talmud, Midrash, Maaseh Bereishit and Maaseh Merkavah. About all the different levels of prophesy, their details and from which level the prophets had their revelations. He understood the whistling of the trees, the grass and stones, the language of the birds and other animals, the conversations of angels, the flicking of a candle. He could read lines on the hand or faces in the manner outlined in the Zohar (2:74b). He could discern all that any individual had done, and could see what they would do in the future. He could read a person's thoughts, even before the thought entered his mind. He saw future events and knew about all happening here or decreed in heaven. He understood the mysteries of reincarnation, who had been born before or incarnated for the first time. He could talk to the soul of a person in front of him; know of his previous incarnations, what he did from the day he was born until now and what his present Tikun is. He could tell anyone about his sins in his previous life and why he came back in this present life. He could look at someone and let him know how he was connected to higher spiritual levels and what is his original root in Adam Harishon. The Ari could see extraordinary things about someone in the light of a candle or through the flame of a fire. He was able to see the souls of the righteous, those who had died lately or had lived in ancient times. With these souls he studied supernal secrets. By a person's scent he was able to know all that he had done. The evildoers avoided him, he could see though them and know what they did or thought. When sincere men wanted to repent, then he would tell them what was their exact Tikun to restore and completely repair their souls. He would tell his students how lost souls would come to him by the thousands whenever he was in the fields. They would fill the trees, the rivers and ask him to help and repair them. He knew every deed a person had done or would do in the future. He could see anyone's thoughts and foresee all his future ones. He could travel great distance by concentrating and projecting his physical body instantly. All the secrets and mysteries were in him and disclosed whenever he desired. All this we witnessed with our own eyes not heard from others. They were extraordinary things never revealed since the times of Rabbi Shimon bar Yohai. This was not achieved through magic since it is strongly prohibited to use these forces. Instead, it came naturally because of his saintliness and asceticism after studying for many years ancient and newer Kabbalistic texts. He increased and reached higher levels of piety, purity and holiness where Elijah the prophet continually revealed himself to him, speaking to him directly and teaching him these secrets.

"Thoughtful and invigorating, full of humour, timeless ...will take its place among the classics of Nature diaries ...to be read alongside Frances Kilvert, Gilbert White, and Dorothy Wordsworth". ("Mail on Sunday"). "Gentle, straight, honest, inquisitive, funny, melancholic". ("Spectator"). "So busy and bustling with life". ("Observer"). "A secular saint".
