What he does not say is that he then proposes to take out a huge mortgage against these fictitious citizens and buy himself a nice estate in Eastern Russia. Will he get away with it? Who will rumble him? Does this narrative contain a deeper message about Russia itself or the spiritual health of humanity?There is much interest and some suspense in considering these issues, but the real pleasure of this story lies elsewhere. It is an enjoyable comic romp through a retarded part of a backward country, a picaresque series of grotesque portraits, situations and conversations described with Gogolian humour based mainly on hyperbole. This is, quite simply, the funniest book in the Russian language before the twentieth century....

I am presenting a book that shows various aspects of the functioning of the Muslim world, mainly in the modern day although a few texts also discuss history. Political, social, literary and cultural phenomena are analysed because, despite wars and conflicts, Muslims do create new positive values. Not all of them are involved in armed operations, political crisis and social strife. Writers create literature, artists devote themselves to art. Of course, everyone is influenced by the atmosphere of conflict and wars but human beings are always able to find a niche where they create a kind of alternative world, different from what goes on around them. Aware of the above, the authors of this book analyse the detailed issues and try to present syntheses of significant research problems. Thus, an extremely interesting panorama of issues concerning the Muslim world is shown here. I am convinced that these texts will not be boring to anyone. On the contrary, they will broaden the image of the world of Islam and possibly encourage Readers to learn more and take a deeper interest in this fascinating part of the world, without which the functioning of the modern civilisation would be difficult to imagine. prof. dr hab. The novel centres around 8 hours in the life of the Author (unnamed), a man in his forties, a literary celebrity, who is in Tel Aviv on a stifling hot night to give a reading. Bored, he looks for distraction - and finds copy. On the way he stops at a cafe where he 'bumps into' some of his own characters. In his head he conjures up the life stories of the people he meets, not least Ricky, an equally bored but seductive waitress. Later, even as the reading from his new book is underway, and the obligatory inane questions ("Why do you write? What is it like to be famous? Do you write with a pen or on a computer?) have come and gone - he weaves stories round the audience and the panel. Afterwards, the Author invites the professional reader for a drink before walking her home. it turns out she lives just opposite, so she goes home and he wanders off into the night. But he returns, climbs the many flights of stairs to the flat, where she lives alone with her cat - and they have a brief but steamy sexual skirmish.

Concentrating on a period from the beginning of the nineteenth century to the beginning of the twentieth, Donald Preziosi presents case studies of major institutions that, he argues, have defined--and are still defining--the possible limits of museological and art historical theory and practice. These include Sir John Soane's Museum in London, preserved in its 1837 state; the Crystal Palace Exhibition of 1851; and four museums founded by Europeans in Egypt in the late nineteenth century, which divided up that country's history into "ethnically marked" aesthetic hierarchies and genealogies that accorded with Europe's construction of itself as the present of the world's past, and the "brain of the earth's body." Through this epistemological and institutional archaeology, Preziosi unearths the outlines of the more radical Enlightenment project that academic art history, professional museology, and art criticism have rendered marginal or invisible. Finally, he sketches a new theory about art, artifice, and visual signification in the cracks and around the margins of the "secular theologisms" of the globalized imperial capital called modernity.
