Spirit and Nature - 2876948476

Spirit and Nature Wipf & Stock Publishers

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Description: Spirit and Nature is a collection of essays exploring how the resources of Christian spirituality can inform the practice of a more ecologically sustainable faith. Our current ecological situation calls for people of religious faith to reexamine the way they envision the practice of spirituality. As environmental ethicists have called us to reconsider the human-Earth relationship so that the planet is not seen as simply an endless supply of resources to fill human wants and needs, so these essays call us to reconsider spiritual practice as it relates to Earth's ecology. Rather than viewing spirituality as an escape from the material world, the authors describe the embodiment of the God-quest within the human-nature relationship. Drawing on diverse disciplinary perspectives, these essays examine a variety of topics, including the relationship between Earth and humans in the Bible, the role of nature's beauty in Christian spirituality, the practice of Christian discernment and contemplation in light of the natural sciences, the role of nature in liturgical prayer, and others. These essays consider how scholarship in Christian spirituality can contribute to re-imaging faith in ways that better cherish the Earth's fragile beauty. Endorsements: ""This collection of essays contains something to please everybody interested in ecological spirituality, regardless of their background. For scientists, reflections on Loren Eisley and Aldo Leopold, for artists thoughts on Emily Carr, for readers with a theological background, sections on Alice Walker's fluid spirituality, the Hebrew Bible's view of creation, liturgy in the face of ecological tragedy, Athanasius' Life of Antony, and more. This all constitutes a colorful intellectual quilt well worth reading."" --Steven A. Kolmes University of Portland ""What does the discipline of Christian spirituality contribute to twenty-first-century urgency toward sustaining the life of the earth? From a rereading of the Bible and retrieval of resources in Christian history, to engagement with contemporary scientists, writers, artists, and activists, this volume's essays stretch readers into transformative new engagement with the tradition, in love of the earth."" --Lisa E. Dahill Trinity Lutheran Seminary ""It is difficult to imagine anyone reading this book and remaining unmoved by its powerful witness to the emergence of a distinctively Christian, ecological spirituality. The historical and theological breadth and interdisciplinary rigor of these essays consistently point toward a truth that has too long been obscured from view--that Christian spiritual practice is inconceivable apart from careful and sustained attention to the living world."" --Douglas Burton-Christie Loyola-Marymount University ""Through Spirit and Nature, the editors and authors invite us to take a clearer, deeper, and more sustained look at the Divine web that binds us to God, each other, and all of nature. We learn from Irenaeus of Lyons that 'the glory of God is the human person fully alive,' but Spirit and Nature helps us see a truth even more profound: that God's glory is a creation fully alive and flourishing. This collection is urgent and indispensible for all who study and teach Christian spirituality."" --Sam Hamilton-Poore San Francisco Theological Seminary About the Contributor(s): Timothy Hessel-Robinson is Alberta and Harold Lunger Assistant Professor of Spiritual Resources and Disciplines at Brite Divinity School, Texas Christian University. Did Christ atone for the sins of humanity on the cross? Does God desire all people to be saved and direct his grace toward all people for that purpose? There are some Christians following a deterministic paradigm who believe this is not true. They believe God has predestined some people for heaven and many, or even most, for hell. The rising tide of Calvinism and its ""TULIP"" theology needs to be respectfully answered. Grace for All: The Arminian Dynamics of Salvation features a distinguished international panel of scholars to examine this controversy. These writers address issues such as election, free will, grace, and assurance. They make compelling scriptural arguments for the universality of God's grace, contending that Christ atoned for the sins of all people and that God sincerely offers forgiveness for all through Christ. This book strives to uncover the biblical position on salvation. We hope the reader will enjoy this stimulating series of articles on the Arminian perspective and that it will spur further writing and discussion. Grace for All: The Arminian Dynamics of Salvation is an updated and revised version of Grace Unlimited, a 1975 collection of scholarly articles assembled by the late Clark H. Pinnock of McMaster Divinity College. ""I cannot think of a more dangerous unbiblical teaching than Calvinism! I recommend this book highly. . . . I am so very glad Grace for All is back [as a new version of Grace Unlimited] and available to a new generation! It is a monumental work and has never been answered. The reader should buy one for himself/herself and buy one for each Presbyterian/Reformed minister in town and give it to him/her as a gift! To God be the Glory!"" --Terry L. Miethe, PhD, former Dean of the Oxford Study Centre, Oxford, England John D. Wagner is a Biblical Studies student at Trinity Theological Seminary. He holds a master's degree in Journalism from the University of Arizona and has extensive experience in writing and editing. Wagner is the editor of three theological works: Redemption Redeemed: A Puritan Defense of Unlimited Atonement by John Goodwin, Freedom of the Will: A Wesleyan Response to Jonathan Edwards by Daniel Whedon, and Arminius Speaks by James Arminius. Clark Pinnock (1937-2010), PhD, University of Manchester, was Professor Emeritus of Systematic Theology at McMaster Divinity College in Vancouver, Canada. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Description: Christian faith is continually challenged by the tension between certainty and mystery. A historic faith can seem threatened by the uncomfortable recognition that God continues to work in a rapidly changing culture. The Bartender is a fable about the messiness and unpredictability of lives being opened up to God through relationships characterized by deep listening and looking for the ongoing work of God in the world. The parallel and sometimes intersecting paths of two men on different spiritual journeys reveal how God seems to be present in the most scandalous of human dramas. When both men take risks that threaten their own religious sensibilities, they find new ways of living out the implications of their faith. Endorsements: Some stories you just read, while others you are drawn into. Mike McNichols has written the latter. It weaves together a collection of characters, each of whom brings important issues that give rise to significant insights for the church to become not just a place but a community of peoples. They become a dispersed people who are both excited and challenged by Jesus, living with curiosity and anticipation as his servants in the world. If Jesus lived life to the full in the world and loved it so much he was prepared to lay down his life for it, how could his followers withdraw into their own little world? That is why the Bartender story is as inspiring as it is disturbing. --Eddie Gibbs, Senior Professor of Church Growth, Fuller Theological Seminary Some stories are told well, some are worth telling. The Bartender is both. And for those struggling with God, Christianity, or the church, worth reading too--well worth it. --Todd Hunter, Founder, Three is Enough Groups Read this book, and you will make the Earth-shaping discovery that . . . there is a better way, and the better way is the different way, and the future will be better for the difference. --Leonard Sweet, Drew Theological School, George Fox University, www.sermons.com About the Contributor(s): Michael McNichols is Director and Adjunct Assistant Professor of Leadership at Fuller Theological Seminary's Regional Center in Irvine, Calfornia. Comprised of six books and over 25,000 verses, The Masnavi is a collection of poems and stories that teaches Sufis how to reach their Union with God. Rumi described the book as "the roots of the roots of the roots of the Faith." Filled to the brim with stories, anecdotes, lessons, and beautiful poetry, this version of The Masnavi contains the six books abridged, and was translated by E.H. Whinfield in 1898.JALAL AD-DIN MUHAMMAD RUMI (1207-1273) was a Persian Muslim theologian, poet, jurist, and Sufi mystic who taught peace between all religions, promoting tolerance and harmony. Born in the village of Wakhsh in greater Balkh (now Tajikistan), Rumi lived out most of his life in the Anatolian city of Konya. After his father's death, Rumi became the head of a madrassa, or religious school, and continued to learn and preach his father's mystical doctrines. Rumi taught that man had been separated from God, but his greatest desire was to reach God once more through music, dance, poetry and art, all of which is reflected in his many writings. His most famous work is the Matanwiye Manawi, or Spiritual Couplets, regarded by many as the Persian Qu'ran. Rumi's grave is still a place of pilgrimage in present-day Turkey.

Exploring Kenotic Christology - 2870656334

Exploring Kenotic Christology Regent College Publishing,US

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This collection of essays, by a team of of Christian philosophers, theologians, and biblical scholars, explores the viability of a kenotic account of the incarnation. Such an account is inspired by Paul's lyrical claims in Philippians 2:6-11 that Christ Jesus though God in nature, 'emptied himself' or 'made himself nothing' by becoming human. The biblical support for such a view can be found throughout the four gospels, and the book of Hebrews, as well as in other places. A kenotic account takes seriously the possibility that Christ in becoming incarnate, temporarily divested himself of such properties as omnipotence, omniscience, and omnipresence. Several of the contributors argue that this view is fully orthodox, and that it has great strengths in giving us a picture of God who is willing to become completely vulnerable for the sake of human beings, and one that is completely consistent with the very human portrait of Jesus in the New Testament. The proponents of kenotic Christology argue that the philosophical accounts of God's nature that have led to rejection of this theory ought themselves to be subjected to criticism in light of the biblical data. Some essays test the theory by raising critical questions and arguing that traditional accounts of the incarnation can achieve the goals of kenotic theories as well as kenotic theories can. The book also explores the implications of a kenotic view of the incarnation for philosophical theology in general and the doctrine of the Trinity in particular, and it concludes with essays that examine the validity of the ideal of kenosis for women, and a challenge to traditional Christology to take a kenotic theory seriously. Published originally in 1910, this charming collection of flower poems and full-color illustrations animates the 82 flowers included in the book. From Crocus to Holly, the flowers are ordered in the book as each would appear throughout the year in a garden. Each illustration is half child and half flower, creating a wonderful way for children to see themselves in the natural world. "All children are flowers in the garden of God's love. A flower is the mystical counterpart of a child. To the understanding heart a child is a flower and a flower is a child. God made flowers on the day that He made the world beautiful. Then He gave the world children to play amid the flowers. God has implanted in the breasts of children a natural love for flowers-and no one who keeps that love in his heart has entirely forsaken the land of childhood."-from the Foreword

Theatrical Theology Cascade Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Theology is inherently theatrical, rooted in God's performance on the world stage and oriented toward faith seeking performative understanding in the theatre of everyday life. Following Hans Urs von Balthasar's magisterial, five-volume Theo-Drama, a growing number of theologians and pastors have been engaging more widely with theatre and drama, producing what has been recognized as a ""theatrical turn"" in theology. This volume includes thirteen essays from theologians and pastors who have contributed in distinct ways to this theatrical turn and who desire to deepen interdisciplinary dialogue between theology and theatre. The result is an unprecedented collection of essays that embodies and advances theatrical theology for the purpose of enriching theological reflection and edifying the church. ""It is one thing to say that ethics is 'performative' or that the incarnation is 'theatrical.' It is another thing to presume that these sorts of statements are self-evidential, when they are far from it. This collection of essays offers us a clear-headed and stimulating treatment of the various ways in which 'theatre' orients the work of Christian theology. This is a very welcome volume for both academy and church."" --W. David O. Taylor, Fuller Theological Seminary, Houston, TX ""The dynamic cast of voices in Theatrical Theology enacts a rich and vibrant dialogue rarely heard in academic conversations about theology and the arts. More than merely appropriating a new conceptual vocabulary for theology, Theatrical Theology actually reckons with the cultural practice of 'theatre' in generative and illuminating ways. This text models a careful engagement with the theorists, practitioners, and canons of theatre while also opening up fresh modes of faithful Christian practice."" --Taylor Worley, Union University, Jackson, TN ""For those who have been intrigued by the growing talk of the 'theatrical turn' in theology, this book allows you to enter the conversation. In these suggestive essays the 'performance of faith' is explored in such a way that the possibilities of this approach begin to surface. By the end of the book the reader knows that the conversation is not over, it is just beginning."" --Kelly M. Now with over 10 million copies sold, The Mistborn Series has the thrills of a heist story, the twistiness of political intrigue, and the epic scale of a landmark fantasy saga. The impossible has been accomplished. The Lord Ruler-the man who claimed to be god incarnate and brutally ruled the world for a thousand years-has been vanquished. But Kelsier, the hero who masterminded that triumph, is dead too, and now the awesome task of building a new world has been left to his young protégé, Vin, the former street urchin who is now the most powerful Mistborn in the land, and to the idealistic young nobleman she loves. As Kelsier's protégé and slayer of the Lord Ruler she is now venerated by a budding new religion, a distinction that makes her intensely uncomfortable. Even more worrying, the mists have begun behaving strangely since the Lord Ruler died, and seem to harbor a strange vaporous entity that haunts her.Stopping assassins may keep Vin's Mistborn skills sharp, but it's the least of her problems. Luthadel, the largest city of the former empire, doesn't run itself, and Vin and the other members of Kelsier's crew, who lead the revolution, must learn a whole new set of practical and political skills to help. It certainly won't get easier with three armies-one of them composed of ferocious giants-now vying to conquer the city, and no sign of the Lord Ruler's hidden cache of atium, the rarest and most powerful allomantic metal. As the siege of Luthadel tightens, an ancient legend seems to offer a glimmer of hope.
