Mr. Crewe's Career (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Mr. Crewe's Career I may as well begin this story with Mr. Hilary Vane, more frequently addressed as the Honourable Hilary Vane, although it was the gentleman's proud boast that he had never held an office in his life. He belonged to the Vanes of Camden Street, - a beautiful village in the bills near Ripton, - and was, in common with some other great men who had made a noise in New York and the nation, a graduate of Camden Wentworth Academy. But Mr. Vane, when he was at home, lived on a wide, maple-shaded street in the "city" of Ripton, cared for by an elderly housekeeper who had more edges than a new-fangled mowing machine. The house was a porticoed one which had belonged to the Austens for a hundred years or more, for Hilary Vane had married, towards middle age, Miss Sarah Austen. In two years he was a widower, and he never tried it again; he had the Austens' house, and that many-edged woman, Euphrasia Cotton, the Austens' housekeeper. The house was of wood, and was painted white as regularly as leap year. From the street front to the vegetable garden in the extreme rear it was exceedingly long, and - perhaps for propriety's sake - Hilary Vane lived at one end of it and Euphrasia at the other. Hilary was sixty-five, Euphrasia seventy, which is not old for frugal people, - though it is just as well to add that there had never been a breath of scandal about either of them, in Ripton or elsewhere. Excerpt from Beauchamp's Career, Vol. 2 of 3 An election in Bevisham was always an exciting period at Itchincope, the large and influential old estate of the Lespels, which at one time, with but a ceremonious drive through the town, sent you two good Whig men to Parliament to sit at Reform banquets; two unswerving party men, blest subscribers to the right Review, and personally proud of its trenchancy. Mr. Grancey Lespel was the survivor of them, and well could he remember the happier day of his grandfather, his father, and his own hot youth. Dukesborough Tales the Chronicles of Mr. Bill Williams (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Dukesborough Tales the Chronicles of Mr. Bill Williams By friends and many acquaintances the author has been often advised to re-publish Dukesborough Tales in a form more convenient than that in which it was first issued. Acting upon this counsel, he has carefully revised and now submits six stories selected from the original sixteen. These relate mainly to incidents in the career of Mr. Bill Williams and his nearest associates. The writer first employed the nom de plume of Philemon Perch, who was supposed to be a witness of many of the scenes and in some a participant. His original preface and dedication are presented in this volume. In Dukesborough the author has preserved his memoirs of Powelton, a small village in Hancock County, Georgia, near which is his birthplace. From Boundary-Rider to Prime Minister Hughes of Australia, the Man of the Hour (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from From Boundary-Rider to Prime Minister Hughes of Australia, the Man of the Hour I am under a deep debt to the High Commissioner of Australia (the Right Hon. Andrew Fisher) for his courtesy in writing his eloquent, pithy and wholly charming introduction, which no one else could have written with equal weight. For Mr. Hughes was his Attorney-General in all the Governments which he formed in the Federal Parliament of Australia, and succeeded him as Prime Minister. The contribution on Compulsory Military Training was delivered by Mr. Hughes as an address to the National Service League at the Caxton Hall in 1907, with Lord Roberts in the chair. The essay on "Socialism" was written by him in his brilliant volume, "The Case for Labour." They are given here with his permission. The monograph entitled, "Labour in Power," was written for The Daily Chronicle, and is reproduced here with his permission and that of the editor of The Daily Chronicle. I also give a number of brilliant extracts from Mr. Hughes's speeches and writings to show his policy, opinions and sympathies. The table of dates in Mr. Hughes's career was corrected by himself. "The Knights of the New Crusade," by a "Wounded New Zealander," is quoted by permission of The Times, and Mr. Murdoch's fine study of Mr. Hughes with the permission of the British Australasian. I wish to express the great obligation under which I rest, for help in preparing this book, to Mr. Keith Murdoch, one of the Australian Press representatives in London, to Mr. M. Shepherd, the Prime Minister's private secretary, and to Mr. E. A. Box, the High Commissioner's private secretary. Excerpt from Life of Dickens Charles Dickens (1812-1870), novelist, was born 7 February, 1812, at 387 Mile End Terrace, Commercial Road, Landport, Portsea. His father, John Dickens, a clerk in the navy pay office, with a salary of 80l. a year, was then stationed in the Portsmouth dockyard. The wife of the first Lord Houghton told Mr. Wemyss Reid that Mrs. Dickens, mother of John, was housekeeper at Crewe, and famous for her powers of story-telling (Wemyss Reid, in Daily News, 8 October, 1887). John Dickens had eight children by his wife Elizabeth, daughter of Charles Barrow, a lieutenant in the navy. The eldest, Fanny, was born in 1810, Charles, the second, was christened Charles John Huffman (erroneously entered Huff ham in the register), but dropped the last two names. Life of Joseph Chamberlain (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Life of Joseph Chamberlain This little book is an attempt to tell the story of the chief events of what is, perhaps, the most striking political career of our day, and to provide a series of studies from different standpoints of the achievements of one who has filled a large place in the life of his country. The standpoints are different, because Mr. Chamberlain's career passed through so many phases. His sympathisers in his early days were later his strongest opponents: some of those who were his colleagues before 1903 were afterwards to be his severest critics. To obtain anything like a full view of his work some sort of symposium is necessary. The various contributors to the volume have very special qualifications for their task. Mr. Spender writes of his career in the Liberal Party as one who himself assisted in his work. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Life and Remains of Theodore Edward Hook, Vol. 1 of 2 A few years before his death, Mr. Theodore Hook placed a selection from his contributions to the "John Bull" newspaper in the hands of Mr. Bentley for publication; some way was made with the work, which was to have been called "Bull's Mouth," and part was actually printed off; circumstances, however, intervened which led to the postponement of the plan, and it was not resumed till about eighteen months ago, when Mr. Bentley first proposed that I should undertake the editing the volumes in question, and should prefix to them a short memoir referring mainly to Mr. Hook's literary career. To this, after some hesitation, and after learning that no more complete account of his life was contemplated by the family, I acceded. Mary Wollstonecraft and the Beginnings of Female Emancipation in France and England (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Mary Wollstonecraft and the Beginnings of Female Emancipation in France and England There is something particularly fascinating about the study of the literature and philosophy of the eighteenth century, with its gradual evolution of lofty social ideals which the Revolution failed to realise. When the altered circumstances brought promotion within my reach, it completely brought me under its sway, and ultimately came to determine my choice of a subject for an inaugural dissertation. It was while engaged upon tracing the influence of Rousseau's hopebringing theories on his English disciple William Godwin, that the less boldly assertive, but all the more humanly attractive personality of the latter's first wife, Mary Wollstonecraft, attracted my attention. My admiration of her husband's intellect paled before my sympathy for her more modest, but at the same time more emotional character. Where the indebtedness of Godwin to Rousseau and the Encyclopedians has been manifested so clearly in different works, the absence of any direct attempt to prove and determine the extent of the relations between Mary Wollstonecraft and the early French philosophers struck me as an omission for which I found it difficult to account, and made me turn to a subject to which I am fully aware that a book of the size of the present little volume does but scant justice. I wish to avail myself of this opportunity to thankfully acknowledge the valuable help and friendly encouragement received from Professor Dr. A. E. H. Swaen, of the University of Amsterdam, whose unceasing kindness and ever-ready interest in the preparation of this treatise I shall never forget. Mr. K. R. Gallas, Lecturer on French Literature in the same University, has likewise a claim to my heartfelt gratitude for giving me the benefit of his extensive knowledge in making various suggestions with regard to the chapters dealing with the literature of France. My best thanks are also due to Mr. M. G. van Neck and Dr. P. Fijn van Draat for guiding my reading for the B. examination, and particularly to my first teacher of English, Mr. L. P. H. Eijkman, for giving me that interest in England and her language and literature which has determined my subsequent career. History of Punch (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Excerpt from The History of Punch The prevailing idea of the origin and history of Punch has hitherto rested mainly on three productions: the Memories of George Hodder, Mr. Punch's Origin and Career, and Mr. Joseph Hatton's delightful but fragmentary papers, entitled The True Story of Punch. So far as the last named is based upon the others, it is untrustworthy in its details; but the statements founded on the writer's own knowledge and on the documentary matter in his hands, as well as upon his intimacy with Mark Lemon, possess a distinct and individual value, and I have not failed to avail myself in the following pages of Mr. Hatton's courteous permission to make such use of them as might be desirable. Whistler Journal (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Whistler Journal This book needs no preface or apology or explanation. Each will be found in it. It is the story of the life Whistler lived with us during the three years after he asked us to write it, and the story he told us of the sixty-six previous years of his troubled, triumphal career - the foundation upon which the biography was built up. But in a biography the intimate tone of a journal is not appropriate and only certain portions could be used. We have had both pleasure and pain in recording what he gave us and also what we learned of him from others. For, when we were writing the Authorized Life, we received aid and assistance from every one except his wife's family who had nothing they could have given us save the documents and letters they may possess, if they preserved them. Mr. Freer was the other exception. Now, however, Mr. Lodge, Curator of the Freer Collection, has granted us the permissions we have asked and, with - we hope - the early opening of that Gallery, a large amount of information about Whistler, as well as many of his important works, will be available. Whistler's fame has vastly increased, the commercial value of his work - now the artistic standard - has also vastly increased, and we have done what we could to increase the world's knowledge of Whistler as we knew him. Miss Philip has given her interpretation of him and his wishes. When his Society proposed to honour his memory by a Memorial Exhibition, she was at first willing to help. Then she became sure he did not wish his work in an English Gallery, but not till she had shown it in the International. Later on, there seemed no question that his wishes could not be opposed to her contributing to a small Whistler exhibition at the Tate Gallery, or to her making a special exhibition from her own collection of his paintings and pastels at Obach's. She, and Arthur Studd, who supported her, and who afterwards bequeathed his Whistlers to the British nation, leave us in doubt therefore as to "the master's wishes." Nor is the information, attributed to Miss Philip this year, concerning the printing of the lithographs exhibited at Obach's in London and Keppel's in New York exactly what one would have expected from Whistler. Many besides Freer are dead - saddest to us, William Heinemann, Whistler's true friend and our true friend, killed like so many good men by the war. Richard Canfield is gone and his collection scattered, all save the lithographs which are preserved in the Brooklyn Museum. And Arthur Jerome Eddy who, like Canfield, will live by his portrait. Report of a Committee of Directors of the Bank of the United States (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Report of a Committee of Directors of the Bank of the United States The Committee to whom was referred on the 24th of September, a paper signed "Andrew Jackson," purporting to have been read to a Cabinet on the 18th, and also another paper signed "H. D. Gilpin, John T. Sullivan, Peter Wager, and Hugh M'Elderry," bearing date August 19th, 1833 - with instructions to consider the same, and report to the Board "whether any, and what steps may be necessary on the part of the Board in consequence of the publication of said letter and report," beg leave to state - That they have carefully examined these papers, and will now proceed to report the result of their reflections in regard to them. In order, however, to render them more intelligible, it will be proper to recal to the attention of the Board, the actual relation which the Bank has for some years past borne to the Executive. Since the establishment of the Institution it has devoted itself anxiously and exclusively to the purposes of its creation, the restoration of the currency, the maintenance of the general credit, and the accommodation of the internal and foreign trade of the country. That it has not failed in these objects - that it has indeed realized more than the anticipations of the most sanguine, is attested by all parts of the community. It was in the midst of this career of inoffensive usefulness, when soon after the accession to power of the present Executive, the purpose was distinctly revealed that other duties than those to the country were required - and that it was necessary for the Bank in administering its affairs, to consult the political views of those who had now obtained the ascendancy in the Executive. It is understood that soon after that event a meeting was held in Washington of the principal chiefs, to consider the means of perpetuating their new authority, and the possession of the Bank was among the most prominent objects of the parties assembled. The first open manifestation of this purpose was in June, 1829, when a concerted effort was made by the executive officers to interfere in the election of the Board of Directors at Portsmouth. At the head of this attempt was Mr. Levi Woodbury, now a member of the present Cabinet at Washington, who did not hesitate to avow in a letter to the Secretary of the Treasury, which, though marked "confidential," was subsequently ordered to be published by the Committee of investigation in 1832 - that he wished the interference of the Government to remove the President of the Branch at Portsmouth, of whom he says: - "The new President Jeremiah Mason, is a particular friend of Mr. Webster, and his political character is doubtless well known to you " - and he requests the Secretary of the Treasury "to commumunicate with some of the Directors of the Mother Bank in favour of such a change. Excerpt from Adah Isaacs Menken: Illustrated Biography Adah Isaacs Menken - "the world's delight," as Swinburne described her - was one of the most remarkable beauties of the 'sixties. She was well-known as a dancer, circus rider, actress, and male impersonator; she was notorious as having had four husbands; she was conspicuous in the world of letters partly by her association with various prominent English and French writers and partly by her volume of poems, entitled "Infelicia," which she was permitted to dedicate to Charles Dickens. Financial Giants of America, Vol. 2 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Financial Giants of America, Vol. 2 The most forceful personality which the steel industry of this country has produced was the late Andrew Carnegie. Carnegie's birthplace was Dunfermline, Scotland. He was an impelling force and a great leader in the iron trade of this country. Mr. Carnegie was without a peer in his lifetime in never-failing confidence in the steel industry and in the keenest comprehension of its needs. Carnegie's father was a weaver, who, with his family, emigrated in 1848 to the United States. Beginning life without even the usual school education, young Carnegie worked in various humble positions in Pittsburgh, where he found employment in a telegraph office and obtained a footing in the railroad world. The basis of the immense fortune he was able to amass was due to his connection with the iron works which he established in Pittsburgh, and which subsequently developed into the vast industry of the Carnegie Steel Co. The Carnegie company in February, 1901, was, with a number of other manufacturing concerns, incorporated as the United States Steel Corporation, having capitalization of over $1,000,000,000. Carnegie at a critical period in his life, was aided by making the acquaintance of a Mr. Woodruff, inventor of the railway sleeping car. He was also helped by the fact that he was one of a fortunate oil syndicate. The story of Carnegie's career and the vast wealth he has amassed reads like a romance, and to his honor be it said he has generously used his princely fortune. He endowed and founded public libraries, notably $500,000 for a library in Pittsburgh and $250,000 for a library in Edinburgh, Scotland, and $5,200,000 to erect and equip 80 public libraries in New York City. He donated $10,000,000 for creating the Carnegie Foundation, a trust fund to provide for college professors in the United States, Canada and Newfoundland, who from old age or other physical disability retire from active service. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Gerald Ffrench's Friends Mr. Gerald French's journalistic career on the Pacific Coast covered a period of five years - from 1873 to 1878. In this time it was his fortune to meet a great many Irishmen, with several of whom he became more or less intimately associated. The Irish colony in California is important both in numbers and influence, and Mr. Ffrench's situation offered unusual advantages for a study of the more prominent peculiarities of the members of that colony. The purpose of these chapters is to depict a few of the most characteristic types of the native Celt of the original stock - as yet unmixed in blood, but modified by new surroundings and a different civilization. All the incidents related in this book are based on fact, and several of them are mere transcripts from actual life, with no more material alteration than seemed necessary to throw the veil of fiction over the identity of the characters.
