Over the past 10-20 years there has been an explosion of work on the disturbance of motor control that is manifested as "spasticity." This work has been based on new insights from animal experiments into the basis of normal motor control and the development of experimental techniques that could be used in patients with neurological disturbances. For this reason, on the initiative of Alfred Thilmann, the editors of this volume organized a workshop on spasticity, held in Essen, Germany, in November, 1992. The intention of the meeting was to bring together leading scientists in an atmosphere that would generate discussion and hopefully consensus and ideas for future work. The attendance was restricted and deliberately selective, with a mix of basic scientists, clinical scientists and practicing clinicians. The product of their presentations and deliberations is this volume. The book is organized in the same sequence as the workshop, so that the discussion sessions could be summarized by the appropriate chairman.

These structures, owing partly to their delicacy. , were formerly sacrificed in the process of fixation, or it was impossible to further differentiate them by any method of staining. For instance, we have up to the present failed of anatomical proof of the numerous physiologio remnants of the tunica vasculosa lentis, the arteria hyaloidea, the various intricacies of the framework supporting the vitreous body, types of Jens sclerosis, eto. , but the number of facts already known as a result of anatomical research which have hitherto evaded clinical confirmation, is far greater, The slitlamp, in combination with the corneal microscope, perinits us to observe the living endothelium on the posterior surface of the cornea. Every individual endo thelial cell on Descemet's membrane, as well as each pathologically deposited lympho eyte is revealed. The nerve fibres of the cornea can be traced to their very finest ramifications. In Deseemet's and Bowman's membranes we have observed pathological folds,' manifested by their charaeteristic reflexes.

Starting point of this book is the observation that an increase in public debt must be accompanied by a rise in the primary surplus of the government to guarantee sustainability of public debt. The book first elaborates on that principle from a theoretical point of view and then tests whether empirical evidence for that rule can be found. Additional tests are implemented to gain further evidence on sustainability of public debt. In order to allow for time varying coefficients penalized spline estimations are performed. The theoretical chapters present endogenous growth models and assume that the primary surplus rises as public debt increases so that sustainability of public debt is given. Implications of public deficits and debt are studied assuming full employment and for unemployment. The conclusion summarizes the findings and compares the results of the different models. Finally, policy implications are given showing how governments should deal with high public debt to GDP ratios.

The purpose of this manual is to pre sent most, though of necessity not all of the important methods of molecular genetics, in a series of simple experiments, many of which can be readily accomplished by the microbiologist, biochemist or biotechnologist that has had only limited exposure to genetics. The remainder of the experiments require either greater familiarity with the subject, or guidance by someone with such experience. The book should, therefore, not only enable individuals to acquire new proce dures for ongoing projects, but also serve as a basis for the teaching of molecular genetic techniques in formal predoctoral and postdoctoral laboratory courses.

Er studierte Philosophie und Literatur in München und Lausanne und war danach freier Schriftsteller in München und Berlin.§§Grigori Jefimowitsch Rasputin (1869-1916) war ein russischer Wanderprediger, dem Erfolge als Geistheiler nachgesagt wurden. Berühmt wurde Rasputin, als er an den Zarenhof gerufen wurde, in der Hoffnung, die Blutungen des an Hämophilie leidenden Zarensohns Alexei durch Gebet zum Stillstand bringen zu können. Zeitzeugen bestätigten, dass Rasputin einen damals unerklärlichen Einfluss auf den Zarensohn und dessen lebensgefährliche Blutungen besaß. Ihm wurde ein sehr unmoralischer Lebenswandel vorgeworfen.
