Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... My Ukrainian Top 15 Models Edition Skylight

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

STEFAN SOELL'S TOP 15 UKRAINIAN MODELS: breathtakingly beautiful and incredibly seductiveThis volume of photographs contains 15 different models, all of whom come from Ukraine. Each and every one is breathtakingly beautiful, incredibly seductive, and displays great self-confidence. Stefan Soell succeeds in firing up a stunning collection of images, all in a class of their own. Thanks to his talented eye and skilful finger, always hovering over the shutter release, all it takes is a tenth of a second to capture extraordinary pictures that typify his striking talent. In fact, a plan had long been in place to create a highly charged erotic photo tour, as Stefan has been taking pictures of Ukrainian models for well over 20 years. Today, he can look back on a highly eventful history. Before 1989 or 1990, it was practically impossible to pass girls through the Iron Curtain to the West. The only way to find them required many so-called managers and whatever connections there were to be had, together with bribery. You had to complete many official documents. Often, despite a great deal of hard work, there was no success. The general opinion of the authorities was that the young, pretty girls, in the prime of their lives, would never come back again, whatever else happened to them. Fortunately, over the years, travel options have improved, and the abolition of the visa requirement has enabled a stream of Ukrainian models to flow into the West unopposed.Stefan Soell has the following to say about his models: "These girls are part of a generation that grew up in hard times. In those days, you had to fight for any improvement in living standards, whether it was for better food, an improved job or a modest enhancement in personal comfort. I have always been impressed by the mental toughness and resilience of these Ukrainian girls. They have an extremely self-confident yet relaxed approach to nude photography. I book most of the models presented here through the model agency Phototours Ukraine. My special thanks go to Oksana, who, as a former model, runs her own agency to professional standards. Tym samym powoduje sensacyjne i rewelacyjne oddziaływanie na organizm. Jest wynikiem najnowszych badań Biocomfortu oraz niezależnych partnerów. Jedyny swego rodzaju i całkiem nowo opatentowany jest filtr runowy (włóknisty) przy macie. Jest on tak elastyczny, że przy małym ciśnieniu powietrza dmuchawy powstają niezwykle gęste i delikatne perełki, a przy wysokim ciśnieniu powodują one silny masaż ciała. Płuca i oskrzela zyskują i korzystają tu jeszcze raz z rewelacyjnego oddziaływania maty.   Everything can be assembled effortlessly and fast, then cleared away again - in the smallest of spaces And that is unique. After all, everyone knows the space problems created by lots of individual parts. A few strokes of the hand and your private therapy spa is ready and whirling: after use it can be stored away in a minimum of space. That really is unique - but only with Massana The secret is the innovative Megawhirl mat! The new MegaWhirl aerated mat is the first of it's kind to be designed on the basis of the human body as the "measure of all things". Not only is the shape of the mat geared to the human body, but the layout of the massage jets is precisely matched to those points of the body which are frequently in pain. Areas massaged while you are lying down: Areas massaged while you are sitting: Cervical Spine: the effervescent massage durably relaxes tense muscles which are often the cause of headaches. Shoulder Area: an effective whirling massage that takes in the shoulder blades, joints and neck. The result is a targeted relaxation of tense muscular groups, reduction of strain on the tendon attachments on the back of the head. Lateral trunk muscles: these are the muscles that have to 'hold us up' day in and day out. So let's treat them to a beneficial massage in the evening, a gentle relaxation in warm water. Hips: strain occurs in this area due to frequent bending, sporting activities or even prolonged periods of sitting. The unique mixture of gentle and vigorous massage relaxes the strained muscles around the hip joint. Reflex Zones: when lying down, you can place the soles of your feet on the 4 jets at the end of the mat. The whirling massage stimulates the reflex zones, and simultaneously the function of internal organs. Cervical vertebrae: the whirling massage primarily targets the deeper tissue. The resultant relaxation improves the mobility of the hips and lower back. Sciatic nerve: a gentle massage of the lumbar region can soothe an inflamed nerve and loosen the cramp it has caused. Thigh: after prolonged periods spent on your feet or sitting with your legs tucked in, or strenuous bicycling and jogging, the muscle groups in the thigh region appreciate a refreshingly relaxing all round massage that also boosts the circulation. Knee: there are even 2 jets on either side of the mat for the overstrained and frequently painful knee joint. The aim is to loosen and flush out harmful waste products, as well as to improve the supply of blood to the joint. Calf: few people can claim they have never suffered from painful cramps in the calf. There are many reasons for such problems, but effective methods of treatment are few. Try the whirl massage, which envelops the entire peroneal muscles and kneads it through, almost like the hands of a professional masseur. Testimonials - Some Very Happy Clients I have had my Massana Megawhirl spa for nearly two years, and it is one of the best investments I have made in my health. Living with a chronic pain condition which affects my hands, arms, shoulders, neck and head, I find the spa of great help in alleviating the pain, stress and stiffness, I really noticed the difference when I was unable to use it for a few weeks. Pain and tension increased, and it was such a relief to get back to my magical spa sessions. I suffer from complex regional pain syndrome, and find that there are no drugs or quick fix treatments to help me, so the spa is a godsend. As a bonus, I have found that the texture and tone of my skin has improved, and annoying spots and pimples almost vanished. My skin is smoother, and creams and unguents are more effectively absorbed. My bathroom has become a temple of beauty and healing, and a sanctuary away from care and worry. In short, I cannot recommend the Massana Megawhirl highly enough. I would add though, that one needn't suffer from a pain condition in order to indulge and enjoy the benefits of this fabulous system! - H.Davies, Narrabundah ACT I purchased the Massana Biocomfort Spa System in Sept, 2003 and use it every 2-3 days. I am writing to let you know that I consider it to be one of the best investments I have ever made. The bath is easy to use, its many features are simple to operate and one has a feeling of total relaxation at the conclusion of the personally nominated bath time. I would have no hesitation in recommending your product to anyone seeking total bath enjoyment. May I also take this opportunity to congratulate your company and staff for the outstanding service and courtesy extended to me when ordering supplies." - M Klein, Surrey Hills, Melbourne, Victoria   Aches & Pains "As a retired Medical Reactionary, with over 40 years in active practice, it did all you claim in the matter of relieving aches and pains. It is indeed and excellent piece of apparatus and we are delighted with it." - R.M. Williams, Vic (B.Sch.M.B.B.Ch) "I no longer need Physiotherapy treatment and rarely, if ever, need to take pain killers. I was able to increase my daily walk to a regular half hour and sometimes longer. Being free of pain means I sleep better, and for a longer period of time, thus facilitating further healing." - A.S.Thompson, SA Arthritis "I was getting physio treatment for my arthritis. Since purchasing the "Massana" I have no need for physio nor do I have to take tablets." - Betty McKenzie, Vic. Back Pain "I have found relief for my back and other aching limbs. The other members of the family enjoy its soothing qualities. I thought I would be able to use the spa at any time but find I almost have to book the bathroom to use it." - David Keall, Vic. Bronchitis "My bronchitis has just about disappeared completely, and now instead of many visits to the physio for my back pain management , I find 10 minutes from the spa has provided equal relief, and I can do it in the comfort of my own home." - Michelle Dennis, Vic. General "The Massana is much better than our own spa bath into which the portable one has been placed. The built-in spa never worked properly, it often splashed all over the walls and floor of our bathroom but also, at time, its water contained black dirt which we had never been able to eradicate. No complaints with this Massana spa which receives full marks." - Mrs L Barlow, Vic. Muscular Dystrophy "Vince has muscular dystrophy and his muscle tone and power is severely affected. Vince has found the spa to be very therapeutic for relaxing his muscle tone and enabling him to move more freely and maintain the function that he has." - Sandra Dunstone, Norther Disability Linkages, Vic. Muscular Pain "Apart from feeling totally relaxed after a spa, I find that I am more alert, require less sleep, and have total relief from any muscular pain. My only regret is that I cannot stay in the Massana spa all day." - Steve O'Connor, NSW "I suffer from a very painful muscular disorder. With very little relief from prescription drugs, I started looking at the natural alternatives and found your products have brought tremendous relief to me for which I, my muscles, and (because I am easier to live with), my husband are very grateful." - Margaret Banyer, SA Poor Circulation "The massage therapy of the "Massana" is a great benefit to residents with circulatory problems, enhancing their skin conditions and promoting healing." - Director of Nursing, Mrs Blyton, Dromana Private Hospital, Vic. Rheumatism "I was suffering from muscular rheumatism for about 12 months and was on medication which helped for a period of time. After 2 to 3 weeks (of using the Massana) I was feeling very much better,my whole body free of pain and cramp." - John Sutton, Tas. Sciatica "As an 88 year old, I use it on a daily basis, and have not needed to revisit my physiotherapist over the past fourteen months. Without this sciatica problem, I am getting around like a champion." - Eric Whillans, Vic. Stress Relief "Many of our children are restless and unsettled. Putting them in the bath with the spa on relaxes and calms them. It has a very settling affect and they enjoy it immensely." - Sandra Yole, Very Special Kids, Vic.   Technical Data Massana Air Whirling Blower 800 W current input, 300W heating output, energy saving by automatic cutoff at operating temperature. Sock Knitting Master Class Interweave Press Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Finalist in the About.com Reader's Choice Awards for Best Knitting Book of 2011. "Budd's latest book is a trove of expertise, with patterns from 15 of the craftiest sockistas around, no surnames necessary...Every project adheres to the holy trinity of custom sock knitting--fit, comfort, aesthetics. And if you can't get enough of this collected wisdom in words alone, a 95-minute sock tutorial by Budd is included on an accompanying DVD." - Cheryl Krementz, Yarn Market News "Ann Budd is at it again. She's pulled together another great collection of patterns, this time from master sock designers. There are 17 sock designs, and there isn't one I wouldn't love to wear." - Cindy Koepke, Knitcircus "It seems like just about all the big names in knitting -- particularly sock knitting -- are featured in Ann Budd's excellent new book Sock Knitting Master Class...In addition to the fantastic patterns, which offer a wide variety of options for both toe-up and top-down knitters (and even one sock that goes both directions!), an introductory section covers just about all you'd ever need to know about some of the design choices that go into making a sock." - About.com Guide to Knitting "If the designers aren't enough to draw you in, there's much more in here for sock novices and sock aficionados alike. With topics like sock design, toe up and top down construction, and the best bind offs for toe-up socks, this book will take you from zero to sock in no time." - KnitPurl yarn shop (Portland, OR) "This book is a really valuable collection of patterns and techniques that any sock knitter will use again and again." - Jenny, KnitPicks.com "I'm really glad to have this book because it has so many patterns, from lace to cable to colorwork, and the socks are all beautiful. Also, the techniques have plenty of charts, diagrams and photographs to make learning easy." - Pamela MacKenzie, MyCentralJersey.com "The facts alone will make you want this book: 15 of the knitting world's best sock designers, 18 sock designs, Ann Budd talking basic how-tos and design tips and Clara Parkes talking sock yarn, and a 95 minute DVD. All of the technique and yarn information is so well organized and thought out that a knitter could read the book and not knit a single sock and still come away having learned a lot about sock knitting." - Knitty.com "...the patterns! Beautiful, yet functional stitch designs and fun colors." - CraftGossip.com Knitting Editor "It's not often that I scoop a book from the top of the review pile and take it home with me, and it's even less common for me to sit down and read it right away. But with sock knitting on my mind, I was intrigued, so last night I sat down to peruse this over a cup of tea. I was absolutely delighted to see that the first chapter of the book is devoted to explaining the whys and wherefores of sock construction. Top-down or toe-up? She's got it covered. Heel flap, short row or afterthought heel? Ditto. Want to choose from a pointed toe, a spiral or star toe, or a toe band? She's got your back with that, too. This book seems like just the right foundation for someone who's ready to strike out on their own - even if the starting place is just switching out the heel or toe treatment for one that suits them better." - Austen Gilliland, craft editor, CanadianLiving.com "You think you already know everything there is to know about socks? After all, there are a multitude of sock books on the market these days, perfectly good books. You know everything. Except...do you really? Most (though not all) sock books I own are either filled with patterns with not a whole lot of time spent on technique, or they're full of guidance but with blah patterns. Of course, some do hit the balance between pattern and technique. Some are fairly exhaustive, in fact, and you may already have them on your shelves. But...they're not THIS book. First, this book is by Ann Budd, a genius in our time...Master Class is the right name!" - KnittingScholar.com "Some features I particularly like in the book: each pattern has a box listing the different techniques used in the pattern; an overview of different styles of creating parts of the sock, such as a few different heel types, toes, and cuff treatments; both top-down and toe-up construction techniques; a handy DVD in the back. If you are looking for some great new sock patterns or just looking to get started knitting socks, this book is sure to have what you need." - A Woolie Tale yarn shop "If you're a fan of socks and of learning more about how to put together socks successfully, this one is a must-read." - About.com Guide to Knitting

'Only with the greatest of simplifications, for the sake of convenience, can we say Africa. In reality, except as a geographical term, Africa doesn't exist'. Ryszard Kapuscinski has been writing about the people of Africa throughout his career. In a study that avoids the official routes, palaces and big politics, he sets out to create an account of post-colonial Africa seen at once as a whole and as a location that wholly defies generalised explanations. It is both a sustained meditation on the mosaic of peoples and practises we call 'Africa', and an impassioned attempt to come to terms with humanity itself as it struggles to escape from foreign domination, from the intoxications of freedom, from war and from politics as theft. The Beginning: Collision, Ghana 1958 More than anything, one is struck by the light. Light everywhere. Brightness everywhere. Everywhere, the sun. Just yesterday, an autumnal London was drenched in rain. The airplane drenched in rain. A cold, wind, darkness. But here, from the morning

Italian Academy Training Sessions for u15-u19 - A Complete Soccer Coaching Program SoccerTutor.com

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Soccer Italian Style coaches Mirko Mazzantini (AFC Fiorentina) and Simone Bombardieri (Empoli FC) are both soccer professional coaches and in this book provide a full football training program from their top Italian Serie 'A' academies. This book contains 12 complete soccer training sessions detailing over 80 practices and progressions as used in the academies of the Italian Serie 'A'. Each session focuses on technical or tactical elements of training and are structured "from simple practices to more complex game situations". The sessions outline a complete program which provides a high level of training. The 12 sessions (over 80 practices) cover the following attributes: Technical training; warm-ups with a ball, ball control, attacking and defending from 1 v 1 - tactical game situations, passing and receiving, Explosive Power, coordination, agility and speed training, football specific conditioning with and without the ball and more. Tactical training; small sided games, phase of plays, functions, pattern play unopposed and opposed, psycho-kinetics training to improve player awareness and quick play, possession play, defensive positioning, counter-attacking, quick transition play, crossing and finishing, build-up play from the back and more. Most of the practices are cleverly structured for "global training" which means working on more than one attribute at the same time. This is valid for all players, with drills and exercises for specific roles (Attackers, midfielders and defenders). Since then, Bryan has continued to look for ways to help himself and others. In Freedom From Lyme Disease, Bryan shares observations from his journey as well as protocols and treatment options that he has found to be the most valuable. Often times, patient experience leads us to some of the most helpful approaches for recovering from Lyme disease. Bryan's personal journey has helped many." -Scott Forsgren, Editor/Founder BetterHealthGuy.com "Once again Bryan Rosner presents a wealth of information in a format that is easy to read, understand, and most importantly, utilize! Bryan has expanded his prior work exponentially to provide updates on modalities such as Rife therapy and antibiotic rotation protocols, as well as providing information on cutting-edge therapies such as biophoton therapy. No one can afford to miss out on this information." -Nicola McFadzean Ducharme, N.D. Founder and Medical Director of RestorMedicine in San Diego, CA. Author of "The Lyme Diet," "The Beginner's Guide to Lyme Disease," and "Lyme Disease in Australia" ABOUT THE BOOK: Bestselling author Bryan Rosner is back with this information-packed sequel to his 2007 book, "The Top 10 Lyme Disease Treatments." That book, which sold over 15,000 copies, established a foundational treatment plan for Lyme disease based on Rosner's extensive research and personal experience. Now, Rosner's newest book, "Freedom from Lyme Disease," builds on the principles set forth in the earlier book. Rosner wrote "Freedom from Lyme Disease" because he observed what he describes as a tipping point in new Lyme disease information and treatment strategies. The tipping point came in 2013, at which time Rosner began working on the new book. Rosner describes this tipping point as a milestone in which there was a fundamental change in how Lyme disease should be approached and treated. "Freedom from Lyme Disease" contains newly discovered treatment modalities and strategies that have the potential to shorten the duration of recovery from Lyme disease. Rosner believes that "Freedom from Lyme Disease" is the most important book he's ever written, as it ties together many of the concepts introduced in his previous books. What sets Rosner's writing apart from other Lyme disease books is that he focuses not just on describing available treatments, but also on how to coordinate and weave these treatments into a customized, individualized treatment plan. He refers to this flexible and unique treatment plan as the "treatment template." While many available books offer information on cutting-edge treatments, few provide guidance on how those treatments should be used in the broader context of a complex and individualized treatment protocol. Check out Bryan's other books: "Lyme Disease & Rife Machines" and "The Top 10 Lyme Disease Treatments."

This book recounts the entire story of the most successful British band since The Beatles. From their humble beginnings to the break-up that shook the pop world, to their explosive and successful come-back tour a decade later, TAKE THAT - NOW AND THEN exposes the intimate details of the band that changed pop history. Containing hot behind-the-scenes information on the band's sell-out come-back tour, Take That - Now and Then gives a complete history of the band, with revelations on what's happened over the band's time together and apart, and allows you to relive the tour experience all over again. Formed in Manchester in the early '90s, everyone had their Take That favourite, from the cheeky Robbie to gorgeous Mark Owen. Gary Barlow, Howard Donald and Jason Orange completed the group, and they went from strength to strength with their unique mix of high-energy dance tunes and soulful ballads. But theirs was not an easy beginning. Gruelling training schedules, tours across the nation in gay clubs that saw their bottoms pinched and empty school halls on a 'Safe Sex tour', all had to be endured before the boys finally 'made it' in the fickle world of pop music. But once they made it, boy did they make it! The only thing more certain than Take Take's next single going straight into the Top Ten was that they would clean up at every award ceremony going, both as a group and as individuals. But behind the glamour and success, tensions were mounting. Robbie Williams was sliding into the depths of depression, and on the eve of their 1995 tour, he left the band. By 1996, Take That were no more. Speaking exclusively to those inside the music industry who knew them best, many of whom have never spoken publicly about their experiences, music journalist Martin Roach recounts exactly what went on behind the scenes during those years, as well as providing first-hand accounts of the fickle world of pop from members of some of the UK's most prolific boy-band members.

Letter from America Penguin

Powieści i opowiadania

When Alistair Cooke retired in March 2004 and then died a few weeks later, he was acclaimed by many as one of the greatest broadcasters of all time. His Letters from America, which began in 1946 and continued uninterrupted every week until early 2004, kept the world in touch with what was happening in Cooke's wry, liberal and humane style. This selection, made largely by Cooke himself and supplemented by his literary executor, gives us the very best of these legendary broadcasts. Over half have never appeared in print before. It is a remarkable portrait of a continent - and a man. Fred Astaire 26 June 1987 Movie stars don't make it. Nor statesmen. Not Prime Ministers, or dictators unless they die in office. Not even a world-famous rock star, unless he's assassinated. But last Monday, none of the three national television networks hesitated about the story that would lead the evening news. On millions of little screens in this country and I don't doubt in many other countries around the world, the first shots were of an imp, a graceful wraith, a firefly in impeccable white tie and tails. And for much longer than the lead story usually runs, for a full five minutes on NBC, we were given a loving retrospective of the dead man, ending with the firm declaration by Nureyev that 'He was not just the best ballroom dancer, or tap dancer, he was simply the greatest, most imaginative, dancer of our time.' And the newsmen were right to remind us of the immortal comment of the Hollywood mogul, who, with the no-nonsense directness of an expert, reported on Fred Astaire's first film test: 'Has enormous ears, can't act, can't sing, dances a little.' That Hollywood mogul, long gone, spent his life ducking round corners, to avoid being identified as the oaf who looked in the sky and never saw the brightest star. However, that expert opinion was, as the lawyers say, controlling at the time and in Astaire's first movies, there was no thought of allowing him to act or sing. But not for long. And thanks to the invention of television, and the need to fill vast stretches of the afternoon and night with old movies, it has been possible for my daughter, for instance, to claim Fred Astaire as her favourite film star from the evidence of all the movies he made fifteen, ten, five, three years before she was born. When I got the news on Monday evening here, and realized with immediate professional satisfaction that the BBC had smartly on hand a musical obituary tribute to him I put together eight years ago, I couldn't help recalling the casual, comic way this and similar radio obituaries came about. I was in London at the end of 1979, and Richard Rodgers - one of the two or three greatest of American songwriters - had just died, I believe on New Year's Eve or the night before. Britons, by then, were getting accustomed, without pain, to making what used to be a two-day Christmas holiday into a ten-day much-needed rest. For all laborious research purposes, the BBC was shut up. And there was no retrospective programme on the life and music of Richard Rodgers in the BBC's archives. Of course, in a gramophone library that looks like an annex to the Pentagon, there were hundreds, perhaps thousands, of recordings of his songs. The SOS went out to a writer, a producer, and - I presume - a man who had the key to the gramophone library. The silent place was unlocked, and the three of them laboured through the day to put together an hour's tribute to Richard Rodgers. It was done. It was competent enough, but rushed to an impossible deadline. This hasty improvisation happened just when my own music producer and I, who had enjoyed working together for six years or so on American popular music, were wondering what we could offer next. We'd done a sketch history of jazz, through individuals. We'd gone through all the popular music of the 1920s, 1930s and 1940s, and were stumped for a new series, at which point I asked if we mightn't go and talk to the head of the channel, network or whatever. We went in, and the genial boss asked me what we had in mind. 'A morgue,' I said. A what? 'Where', I asked, 'is your morgue?' He was not familiar with the word, a newspaper term. 'Well,' I said, 'all newspapers have them.' 'How d'you mean?' 'If, I explained, 'Mrs Thatcher died tonight and you woke up and read a two-sentence obituary, you'd be rightly outraged. But if you saw a two-page obituary, you'd take it for granted. When d'you suppose it was written?' 'That's right,' he said thoughtfully. What I was proposing was a morgue of the Americans eminent in popular music and jazz, so they'd not get caught short again. A splendid idea, the man said; pick your stars. We made a list and were commissioned to return to America and finish all of them. Naturally, we looked at a calendar, and birthdates of Hoagy Carmichael, Earl Hines, Harold Arlen, Ethel Merman, Stephane Grappelli, Ella Fitzgerald. But then, in a spasm of panic, we thought of two giants - if the word can be used about two comparative midgets: Irving Berlin and Fred Astaire. Berlin was then 91. And Fred Astaire was just crowding 80. The boss man, to whom the idea of a morgue had been, only a few minutes before, quaint if not morbid, wondered what we were waiting for. Better get busy, at once, on Berlin and then on Astaire. I remember doing the Astaire obit, then and there, while I was still in London. Meanwhile, we'd simply pray every night that the Lord would keep Irving Berlin breathing till I could get home and get busy. I remember being picked up in a car by a charming young girl to get to the BBC and record my Astaire narration - there wasn't a moment to lose. She asked me, in the car, what the script was that I was clutching. 'It's an obituary', I said, 'of Fred Astaire.' 'Fred Astaire,' she shrieked, 'dead?' and almost swerved into a bus. 'Of course, he's not dead,' I said, 'but he's going to be one day.' She, too, was new to the institution of a morgue. I recalled that when I was a correspondent for a British paper in the United States, and when for example. Dean Acheson was appointed Secretary of State, the first cable I had from my editor said, 'Welcome Acheson obituary soonest.' How ghoulish, she said. I imagine that to two generations at least, it's assumed that Fred Astaire, this slim, pop-eyed newcomer to Hollywood who couldn't act, couldn't sing, danced a little, only made a fool of the mogul through the movies he made, with Ginger Rogers, in the mid- and late 1930s. But long before then, from the mid-1920s on, he was already an incomparable star - as a dancer - to theatre audiences both in New York and in London. Perhaps more in London than anywhere, certainly in the 1920s, with the early Gershwin hits, Funny Face and Lady Be Good, and lastly, in 1933, in Cole Porter's Gay Divorce (which was the title of the theatre show; Hollywood would not then allow so shocking a title and called the movie version, The Gay Divorcee). Of all the thousands of words that have been written this week, and will be written, there is a passage I went back to on Tuesday night which, I think, as well as anything I know, sums up Astaire's overall appeal - the appeal that takes in but transcends one's admiration for his dancing and for his inimitably intimate singing style. This was written in November 1933, by a theatre critic who had so little feel for dancing that he marvelled why London should go on about 'Mr Astaire's doing well enough what the Tiller Girls at Blackpool do superbly'. The critic, the writer, was James Agate, the irascible, dogmatic, opinionated but brilliant journalist, and I believe the best critic of acting we have had this century. He is writing his review of Gay Divorce, after declaring yet again his contempt for musical comedy as an entertainment for idiots, deploring the play's plot and the acting and hoping 'Micawberishly, for something to turn up'. 'Presently,' he wrote, 'Mr Fred Astaire obliged, and there is really no more to be said.' Except
