Cake Pops Chronicle Books
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The newest way to eat cake since the cupcake, these cute little treats are cake and frosting mixed together, dipped in chocolate or other candy coating, and decorated to make little yellow chicks, reindeer, jack-o-lanterns, a box of popcorn, and the most famous so far--one that looks like a cupcake. The cupcake version got Bakerella onto the Martha Stewart Show, where she wowed Martha with how cute and easy they were to make. The book includes more than 40 projects from koala bears and cute puppies to ghosts and snowmen. Basic recipes show how to make a classic cake pop and readers can go to the projects to embellish them into fabulously cute treats. Cake pops can be made with boxed cake mix and store-bought frosting but recipes from scratch are included for those who want them. Plus an extensive section of resources includes lists and photos of the different decorations that can be used to make the pops (red hots to oreos) and an array or Web sites to go to find them (though most can be purchased from an average supermarket). Loads and loads of photos are included throughout -- in fact every cake pop has a photo giving readers a visual reference for every project.Cake Pops are the newest and cutest way to eat cake since the cupcake! --Cake Pops are the brainchild of Angie Dudley aka Bakerella, a blog devoted to baking and, especially, to cake pops. --The Bakerella blog attracts more than 200,000 unique visitors a month and rising (more than 1 million page views) and has enough recognition to be solicited by magazines like Food & Wine (she gave them a Thanksgiving cake pop recipe), companies like General Mills (she was invited to create a halloween recipe using their cereal and was flown to the corporate office for a tour and wine and dine), and other bloggers including hot hot hot Pioneer Woman (who flew her in along with contest winners to her home to make cake pops) --Bakerella was on the Martha Stewart Show in 2008 to demonstrate how to make Cake Pops. Joseph Conrad Collection Including (unabridged) Benediction Classics
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Joseph Conrad (1857-1924) is considered to be one of the great novelists in English. His novels often have a nautical setting and his characters suffer trials in the midst of an indifferent universe. His masterful prose is second to none and his Polish background brings a romantic or tragic style that was previously unknown in English novels. The "Heart of Darkness" is a true classic. A small book but every word is powerfully and perfectly placed. It is a dark allegory full of suspense, adventure, character development and psychological drama. The story is told by Marlow who on his journey up the Congo meets and becomes fascinated with Mr Kurtz who dominates the local people. This is considered to be Conrad's greatest and most enigmatic story. The" Secret Agent" is a piercing sociological evaluation of the entire culture of the western world and the many flawed sub-cultures that emerge from it. Set in London, each group has an anti-hero who epitomises the problems with a culture that is entirely based on self-interest. There is a broken time line in the novel that heightens the mystery of the identity of the tragic victim who dies early on in the story. "Lord Jim" is a sea-faring tale, but more than that is it a story of Jim's lifelong efforts to atone for an act of instinctive cowardice. This then became the classic tale that gave birth to a new genre of literature. "Nostromo" is another sea-faring epic and a complex tale of colonial life in Latin America. In this book there are flashbacks, people telling stories within stories which adds both to the complexity and the depth. The tale draws you in with a sense of foreboding as the lure of silver, greed, capitalist exploitation and rebellion evolve. "Victory" centers around the character Axel Heyst, a complex character who wishes to cut himself off from people to avoid suffering. He settles on a remote island in the Malay Archipelago. However, he is hated and misunderstood by the evil innkeeper Schomberg and then rescues a young English woman, Lena. The take is one of adventure and complex relationships, but ultimately about the incredible healing power of love.

The Secret Diaries Of Miss Anne Lister: Vol. 1 Little, Brown Book Group
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
'Engaging, revealing, at times simply astonishing: Anne Lister's diaries are an indispensable read for anyone interested in the history of gender, sexuality, and the intimate lives of women' SARAH WATERS'The Lister diaries are the Dead Sea Scrolls of lesbian history; they changed everything. By resurrecting them and editing them with such loving attention and intelligence, Helena Whitbread has earned the gratitude of a whole generation' EMMA DONOGHUEWhen this volume of Anne Lister's diaries was first published in 1988, it was hailed as a vital piece of lost lesbian history. The editor, Helena Whitbread, had spent years painstakingly researching and transcribing Lister's extensive journals, much of which were written in an elaborate code - what Lister called her 'crypthand', which allowed her to record her life in intimate, and at times, explicit, detail. Until then, Anne Lister's lesbianism had been supressed or hinted at; this was the first time her story had been told. Anne Lister defied the role of nineteenth-century womanhood: she was bold, fiercely independent, a landowner, industrialist, traveller and lesbian - a woman who lived her life on her own terms.'[Anne Lister's] sense of self, and self-awareness, is what makes her modern to us. She was a woman exercising conscious choice. She controlled her cash and her body. At a time when women had to marry, or be looked after by a male relative, and when all their property on marriage passed to their husband, Anne Lister not only dodged the traps of being female, she set up a liaison with another woman that enhanced her own wealth and left both of them free to live as they wished . . . The diaries gave me courage' JEANETTE WINTERSONThese diaries include the years 1816-1824. The second volume, continuing Anne's story, THE SECRET DIARIES OF MISS ANNE LISTER: NO PRIEST BUT LOVE, is now available.

Confessions of the Other Mother Beacon Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
After author Harlyn Aizley gave birth to her daughter, she watched in unanticipated horror as her partner scooped up the baby and said, "I'm your new mommy!" While they both had worked to find the perfect sperm donor, Aizley had spent nine months carrying the baby and hours in labor, so how could her partner claim to be their child's mommy? Many diapers later, Aizley began to appreciate the complexity of her partner's new role as the other mother. Together, they searched for stories about families like their own, in which a woman has chosen to forgo her own birth experience so that she might support her partner in hers. They found very few. Now, in Confessions of the Other Mother, Aizley has put together an exciting collection of personal stories by women like her partner who are creating new parenting roles, redefining motherhood, and reshaping our view of two-parent families. Contributors include Hillary Goodridge, who was one of the lead plaintiffs in the case for same-sex marriage in Massachusetts, stand-up comedian Judy Gold, and psychologist and author Suzanne M. Johnson. This candid peek into a previously unexamined side of lesbian parenting is full of stories that are sometimes humorous, sometimes moving, but at all times celebratory. Each parenting tale sheds light on the many facets of motherhood, offering gay and straight readers alike a deeper understanding of what it means to love and parent in the twenty-first century.

Playing Big Cornerstone
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
A groundbreaking women's leadership expert and popular conference speaker gives women the practical skills to voice and implement the changes they want to see--in themselves and in the world In her coaching and programs for women, Tara Mohr saw how women were "playing small" in their lives and careers, were frustrated by it, and wanted to "play bigger." She has devised a proven way for them to achieve their dreams by playing big from the inside out. Mohr's work helping women play bigger has earned acclaim from the likes of Maria Shriver and Jillian Michaels, and has been featured on the "Today "show, " CNN, " and a host of other media outlets. Sheryl Sandberg's "Lean In" gave many women new awareness about what kinds of changes they need to make to become more successful; yet most women need help implementing them. In the tradition of Brene Brown's "Daring Greatly," "Playing Big" provides real, practical tools to help women quiet self-doubt, identify their callings, "unhook" from praise and criticism, unlearn counterproductive good girl habits, and begin taking bold action. While not all women aspire to end up in the corner office, every woman aspires to something. "Playing Big" fills a major gap among women's career books; it isn't just for corporate women. The book offers tools to help "every" woman play bigger--whether she's an executive, community volunteer, artist, or stay-at-home mom. Thousands of women across the country have been transformed by Mohr's program, and now this book makes the ideas and practices available to everyone who is ready to play big.

The Darkness of Wallis Simpson Vintage
Społeczno-obyczajowaPolitycznaBiograficznaPowieść zagraniczna
Wallis Simpson, the twice-divorced American woman for whom Edward VIII abdicated in 1936, ended her life (as the Duchess of Windsor) as the prisoner of her lawyer who would not allow anyone ? friend, foe or journalist ? to visit her in her Paris flat. Rose Tremain takes this true story and transforms it into an imaginative and ironic fiction. Her thesis is that Wallis, gaga and bed-ridden, had forgotten the king who gave up an empire for love of her. This superb story plays with the selectiveness of memory: why does Wallis recall the seemingly unimportant, while forgetting the glory days of her notoriety? She can remember her first two husbands ? one a bit of a brute, the other very boring ? but not the world-famous third one. The other stories in this magnificent collection range over a variety of themes, equally original and unexpected: an East German border guard, redundant after the Berlin Wall comes down in 1989, imagines that he might still have a purpose in life. He tries to reach Russia by bicycling across the hostile wastes of Poland. A jilted man gets his revenge. A baby grows wings. A character in an Impressionist painting escapes from his ?frame? ? or does he? And there?s a Christmas story set in a seedy hotel.
