Negotiated Europeanisation is the final study in a three-volume series on European Works Councils by an international research group. The first two studies have already been published by Ashgate. The current study is rooted in an analysis of the establishment of EWCs under Articles 5 and 6 of the 1994 EWC Directive. This is now a mandatory procedure and completes the development of EWCs from bodies set up purely by voluntary negotiation to bodies set up within a binding statutory procedure. The study is based on cases of five (named) major European firms in a variety of industrial sectors. As well as a detailed consideration of how negotiations using the mandatory procedure took place, there are more general reflections on the 'quality' of the actors involved, the negotiating process and the outcomes. As well as their analytical value, these observations offer a number of practical pointers on the establishment of information and consultation arrangements internationally. The study also asks why EWCs have been set up in only one third of eligible companies and why the pace of establishing new EWCs slowed after the mandatory procedure came into force in September 1996. This part of the study is based upon a pan-European questionnaire and offers the first empirical findings on this issue. European Works Councils exemplify a new mode of regulation at the European level, not only within industrial relations but in the field of European integration more widely conceived - Europe as a multi-level system of governance within a framework of devolved subsidiarity. This study is of both academic and practical interest, particularly in view of the continuing process of change in this area, exemplified in new Directives on the European Company Statute and information and consultation at national level.

Since antiquity, architecture and the pictorial arts (paintings, photography, graphic arts) have not been rigidly separated. In the Classical tradition the education of the architect and artist has always stressed a relationship between the arts; modern scholarship has too often treated them as separate disciplines. Published in two volumes, The Built Surface offers a series of essays in which the authors reverse this trend and examine cases where architecture informs the themes and physical space of pictures, or pictorial concerns inform the design and construction of the built environment. The exchanges between architecture and pictures explored by these authors are found to be in all cases significantly expressive of their respective social, political, and intellectual histories.

Ways of Knowing in Early Modern Germany Ashgate Publishing Company

Inne 1

Gerhild Scholz Williams's Ways of Knowing in Early Modern Germany: Johannes Praetorius as a Witness to His Time, reviews key discourses in eight of Praetorius's works. She introduces the modern reader to the kinds of subjects, the intellectual and spiritual approaches to them, and the genres that this educated and productive German scholar and polymath presented to his audience in the seventeenth century. By relating these individual works to a number of contemporaneous writings, Williams shows how Praetorius constructed a panorama in print in which wonders, the occult, the emerging scientific way of thinking, family and social mores are recurrent themes. Included in Praetorius's portrait of the mid-seventeenth-century are discussions of Paracelsus's scientific theories and practice; early modern German theories on witchcraft and demonology and their applications in the seventeenth century. Furthermore, we read about the early modern beginnings of ethnography, anthropology, and physical geography; gender theory, early modern and contemporary notions of intellectual property, and competing and sometimes conflicting early modern scientific and theological explanations of natural anomalies. Moreover, throughout his work and certainly in those texts chosen for this study, Praetorius appears before us as an assiduous reporter of contemporary European and pan-European events and scientific discoveries, a critic of common superstitions, as much a believer in occult causes and signs and in God's communication with His people. In his writings, in his way of telling, he offers strategies by which to comprehend the political, social, and intellectual uncertainties of his century and, in so doing, identifies ways to confront the diverse interpretive authorities and the varieties of structures of knowledge that interacted and conflicted with each other in the public arena of knowing.

Historia

This book looks at the policing of social and political protest and of the role played by the French and Prussian armies in maintaining public order in the years leading up to the First World War. The period 1890 to 1914 was characterised by mass protest in both countries as the political, social and economic order of the German Empire and the French Third Republic were repeatedly challenged by industrial disputes, public protest and riots. In Berlin and Paris, the political elites urgently needed to find ways of sustaining economic growth while maintaining political stability through their management of law and order enforcement. At the same time, public authorities had to carefully consider how protest was to be policed in a way that would not further alienate important groups from the existing regime. Confronted with this dilemma, the use of the French and Prussian armies in maintenance of public order became an increasing concern for the government ministers, provincial administrators and military commanders of both countries. During the 1890s, however, the use of troops for protest policing in these two countries took diverging trajectories. As well as examining the differing methods of policing of social and political protest this work also investigates the internal functioning of the French Third Republic and the German Empire, in particular the relationship between the civil and military elites at the central and regional levels. By examining the use of troops in the two most industrialised areas of Germany and France, the Westphalian Ruhr district and the French region of Nord/Pas-de-Calais, the study describes how the governments and the provincial administrations in the two countries adopted distinctly dissimilar paths towards modernisation of protest policing.'...exhaustively researched and clearly written model study...Highly recommended.' Choice 'This is a significant book, a publication well worth the effort of careful exploration and digestion.' The Journal of Military History

Philosophy of Rabindranath Tagore Ashgate Publishing Company

The Nobel Prize winner, Rabindranath Tagore (1861-1941) - 'the Indian Goethe', as Albert Schweitzer called him - was not only the foremost poet and playwright of modern India, but one of its most profound and influential thinkers. Kalyan Sen Gupta's book is the first comprehensive introduction to Tagore's philosophical, socio-political and religious thinking. Drawing on Rabindranath's poetry as well as his essays, and against the background theme of his deep sensitivity to the holistic character of human life and the natural world, Sen Gupta explores the wide range of Tagore's thought. His idea of spirituality, his reflections on the significance of death, his educational innovations and his relationship to his great contemporary, Gandhi, are among the topics that Sen Gupta discusses - as are Tagore's views on marriage, his distinctive understanding of Hinduism, and his prescient concerns for the natural environment. The author does not disguise the tensions to be found in Tagore's writings, but endorses the great poet's own conviction that these are tensions resolvable at the level of a creative life, if not at that of abstract thought. '...an excellent introduction to Tagore's philosophical, sociopolitical, and religious thought...The writing throughout is clear and elegant. Useful bibliography and index...Highly recommended.' Public Life and the Place of the Church Ashgate Publishing Company

Inne 1

The work of Richard Harries, Bishop of Oxford from 1987 to 2006, has been highly distinctive for the consistency of its engagement with contemporary society. It represents a model of the Church which is outward-looking, a Church which is as ready to learn from others as it is to offer its own wisdom and resources. This book reflects on Richard Harries' ministry in the 'borderlands' of society and Church, and engages deeply with the nature of modern society and the place of the Church within it. Taking Richard Harries' contributions as their inspiration, key figures, each of them major commentators on areas of pressing contemporary concern, probe the important questions which people are asking about a range of social issues. Arms and violence, the role of the media in public life, spirituality, multifaith Britain, sex, capitalism, the second chamber, and medical ethics are all discussed, building up a serious debate on the kind of society in which we live and making suggestive comments about the part which the Church might play. Contributors: Sabina Alkire, Michael Bourke, Melvyn Bragg, John Drury, Claire Foster, Jonathan Gorsky, Anthony Howard, Douglas Hurd, Eric James, Julia Neuberger, Edmund Newell, Christopher Rowland, Jane Shaw, Margaret Shepherd, Roger Wagner, Keith Ward, Rowan Williams, Shirley Williams and James Woodward.'For many years, Bishop Richard Harries has been an outstanding voice of conscience and moral courage and a personal embodiment of all that is best and noblest in the life of faith. This volume honours one who has honoured us, constantly summoning us to the better angels of our nature.' Chief Rabbi Sir Jonathan Sacks 'This is an extremely interesting and thought-provoking collection of essays, and reflects the depth and variety of Richard Harries' thought. He has contributed enormously to the reputation of the Church as fully engaged in current public issues. A strong, steady moral stream flows through all his numerous public statements; he has always been honest in facing difficult questions.' Baroness Warnock of Weeke '(a) fascinating collection of papers that includes articles by Christopher Rowland, Julia Neuberger, Melvyn Bragg, Keith Ward, Jane Shaw, John Drury, Douglas Hurd, Rowan Williams and many more. There is a dialogue between Shirley Williams, Michael Bourke and Anthony Howard. All of the contributors can claim to have had some kind of relationship as friends, colleagues, or collaborators with Bishop Richard and their range is a tribute to the breadth of his interest.' Hidden Cost of Economic Development - 2212832527

Hidden Cost of Economic Development Ashgate Publishing Company

Inne 1

During the mid-nineteenth century, the American economy grew rapidly as industrialization began to take a firm hold on the nation, and per capita net national product increased significantly. Yet despite this economic bustle and increased affluence, signs of adversity associated with the structural changes from a primarily agricultural, to an industrial economy can be detected. As this book demonstrates, the onset of modern economic growth impinged upon the health and biological well-being of the men and women experiencing that rapid structural transformation. Using detailed statistical analysis of Civil War enlistment records, this book examines the relationship between economic change and changes in the biological standard of living. It argues that industrialization had hidden costs - even in the United States with its abundant resources. Population growth, urbanization and market integration all seem to have had a deleterious effect on the biological well-being of the population, which can be measured in biological statistics. Appealing to a wide circle of scholars, including historians, anthropologists and economists, this book introduces a new conceptualization of the standard of living, and explores social differences in welfare during the period considered. It shows that expansion of the market can be a two-edged sword in that it can increase incomes but simultaneously have an adverse effect on the health and nutritional status of the children living through those times. This conclusion is reached through close analysis of an extensive new data set obtained meticulously from the United States National Archive.'Well-written, tightly reasoned, and carefully crafted, it represents a valuable contribution to both the anthropometric literature and the historiography of the antebellum United States.' Elizabeth Blackadder has been respected as a printmaker for over five decades and, during that time, has experimented with a range of diverse media including etching, aquatint, drypoint, woodcut, screenprint, monoprint and lithography. This book illustrates and catalogues every published print made by Blackadder from the 1950s to the 2002. Christopher Allan examines these media one by one to reveal how Blackadder has successfully exploited the characteristics of each printmaking method to create a range of original prints. Blackadder first experimented with printmaking during her student days in the early 1950s and her first prints were published in 1958. The beginnings of her career coincided with the explosion of printmaking during the 1960s when the discipline became increasingly recognized alongside painting and sculpture. Throughout this period and into the 1970s, Blackadder worked with a range of studios including Curwen Studio, The Mercury Gallery, Peacock Printers in Aberdeen and the Glasgow Print Studio. There she experimented with innovations in printmaking techniques, as well as re-engaging with methods which she had employed previously such as screenprinting. Illustrated with over 80 colour reproductions, the volume presents Blackadder's prints thematically, revealing her constant return to images of the natural world: from landscapes and animals, to orchids and other plants. A limited edition, of 75 signed copies, includes the original print, "Cat and Orchid", in a slipcase (ISBN 0 85331 887 5).
