Child and the Curriculum Martino Fine Books

2011 Reprint of 1902 edition. Full facsimile of the original edition, not reproduced with Optical Recognition Software. John Dewey recognized that "children's development and learning were anything but rational and orderly, he and his followers advocated a child-centered and community-centered curriculum to give students experiences that make rigorous intellectual demands in the contexts of democratic social living. "The Child and the Curriculum" looks at the process of education from both perspectives - child and curriculum. Dewey leads the reader to view the curriculum, what the child must learn, from the child's present state of mind. He also considers the teachers point of view as the vehicle that imparts and delivers the curriculum. Dewey understood that the structure of a child's mind is far different from that of an adult. A child does not have a framework in which to classify and place all the information he is receiving. The child is still developing both the context and the framework to process information about the world around him. The child's interests lie in the world of persons and relationships as opposed to that of facts and laws.

Maria Montessori (1870 - 1952) was an Italian educator who developed an educational system based on child development. Her schools deal primarily with preschool and early elementary aged children. Her method is characterized by an emphasis on self-directed activity on the part of the child and clinical observation on the part of the teacher. The learning environment must be adapted to the maturity level of the child. New concepts are taught using autodidactic (self-correcting) equipment). In this way a child's mistake is caught immediately instead of the child doing an activity and not getting feedback until a later time. Montessori teachers stock their classrooms with nature shelves, living plants and small pets, or perhaps a window sill garden, allowing children to experience as much of the natural world as possible given modern constraints. The class may have a three year age span thus allowing for ranges in development and social levels. Spontaneous Activity in Education covers a wide range of topics from child development, to setting up a classroom and training teachers, social issues, and educational philosophy.

New and successful insights for the care and raising of the child in the first three years of life. The contributions in this book deal with the process of incarnation in the first three years of life. They highlight questions concerning walking-, speaking- and learning to think of the young child - on the one hand from the viewpoint of anthroposophic knowledge of the human being, and on the other hand from research by Emmi Pikler.- How can the young child be given enough free space, to best unfold his innate capacities for the future?- How can the child's autonomous will to learn be supported and promoted, so that his personality can develop on the basis of trust and security?- How can the relationship skills of the young child be formed by attentive and trusting togetherness in care situations, as prerequisite to be freely active.- How should the surrounding of the little child be designed, also with regard to the self-education and self-development of the parents and educators, so that the child can experience being by himself and then again in connection with his surroundings? The answers to these four essential questions correspond to the current state of knowledge and practical experience. In order to optimally support the child in his development in a world that is often not child friendly, the interdisciplinary combination of medical-psychological-pedagogical research has proven to be particularly fruitful and forward-looking.In coordination with the Association of Waldorf Kindergartens and the Medical Section at the Goetheanum.

This book reveals the huge potential of engaging pupils with their emotions in the classroom. Engaging Education presents evidence that when pupils work in this way they become more co-operative and help each other to learn. For teachers it tackles the questions of: What is emotional literacy and emotional intelligence? How is it possible to have a calm atmosphere in the classroom with pupils enjoying learning together? How can they incorporate pupilsĹź emotional development into their lessons while nourishing and enhancing achievement? How can teachers and policy makers help pupils develop better relationships of all kinds and prepare them for adulthood? Engaging Education has a fresh approach and explores how schools can move beyond a focus on cognitive attainment through an emphasis on affective engagement, so preparing pupils to cope with a fast changing world. Engaging Education is pioneering and links, for the first time, emotional literacy, equity and social justice, and the education of the whole child. It is common for equity to be discussed without reference to the emotions, and for the emotions to be considered in isolation from equity issues. Bringing these together enables emotional literacy to be debated in a social context and its political nature made explicit. Based firmly on research, including that by the author, this critical study of the concept of emotional literacy gives teachers guidelines on what to concentrate on, and what to avoid. With the introduction of emotional literacy programmes into schools it is possible for pupils to learn to be more confident with each other socially and emotionally, so that as adults it is possible for them to have better and closer relationships of all kinds.Engaging Education gives support for co-educational schools. In linking emotional literacy and equity with the structure of schooling, it establishes that co-educational schools can contribute to enabling boys and girls to relate to and understand to each other. As well as the teaching profession, this book is invaluable to policy-makers and all those concerned with education.

No Means No| - 2861905014

No Means No| UpLoad Publishing Pty Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

'No Means No!' is a children's picture book about an empowered little girl who has a very strong and clear voice in all issues, especially those relating to her body and personal boundaries. This book can be read to children from 3 to 9 years. It is a springboard for discussions regarding children's choices and their rights. The 'Note to the Reader' at the beginning of the book and the 'Discussion Questions' on the final pages, guide and enhance this essential discussion. It is crucial that our children, from a very young age, are taught to have a clear, strong voice in regards to their rights - especially about their bodies. In this way, they will have the confidence to speak up when they are unhappy or feel uncomfortable in any situation. A strong, confident voice as a young child converts to a strong, confident pre-teen, teenager and adult. With the prevalence today of online and offline bullying and various forms of abuse, such as physical, emotional and sexual abuse; our young people need to learn (from a young age) to always speak up when their rights are not being respected. The aim of this book is to empower young children and to give them a voice so they can grow up into empowered adults. When a child, teenager or adult says, 'No!' to any form of coercion, this should be immediately respected. A world where 'No!' does actually mean 'No!' can be a world with far less violence and increased respect for humankind. By educating our children to have true respect for one another, this world can be a much safer and more positive place. Body Safety Education (aka sexual abuse prevention education) empowers girls and boys through knowledge, and teaches them they have the right to say, 'No' and to respect other's personal boundaries. Both girls and boys need to learn to ask for consent and this can be taught from a very young age. Some of the scenarios in this book are typical of approaches used by sexual abusers (sexual predators/molesters/pedophiles) when grooming children for sexual abuse. Their aim is to desensitize the child to having their personal space violated and desensitize them to touch.
