Studio Ceramics (Victoria and Albert Museum) Thames & Hudson Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

An extensive visual catalogue and the primary reference for twentieth-century and contemporary British ceramics, and a record of the national collection of British ceramics held at the V&A. Contemporary ceramicists working in Britain, including Rachel Kneebone, Grayson Perry and Edmund de Waal, are part of a broader international group of artists experimenting with clay, considering how it intersects and works in dialogue with other artforms and culture at large. Recent experimentation with the medium owes much to the rapid evolution of ceramics into an expanded field, and to the work of mid to late twentieth-century potters and their liberation from the legacy of groups such as the Arts and Crafts movement. The experimental techniques and rethinking of form in the work of exponents such as Lucie Rie, Bernard Leach, and Hans Coper - whose reference points were drawn from Asia, Africa, India and the Middle East as much as from their own heritage - continue to influence and inspire contemporary makers. In his introductory essay, Alun Graves, Senior Curator of Ceramics at the Victoria and Albert Museum, London, provides all lovers of ceramics - collectors, practitioners, historians and those interested in modern and contemporary art and crafts - with the historical context, documenting this shift in the medium into an expressive, and sometimes interventionist, art form.

Scar of Visibility Medical Performances and Contemporary Ar - 2212830109

Scar of Visibility Medical Performances and Contemporary Ar University of Minnesota Press

Sztuka

Contemporary visual and performance artists have adopted modern medical technologies such as MRIs and computer imaging--and the bodily access they imply--to reveal their limitations. In doing so they emphasize the unknowability of another's bodily experience and the effects--physical, emotional, and social--of medical procedures. In The Scar of Visibility, Petra Kuppers examines the use of medical imagery practices in contemporary art, as well as different arts of everyday life (self-help groups, community events, Internet sites), focusing on fantasies and "knowledge projects" surrounding the human body. Among the works she investigates are the controversial Body Worlds exhibition of plastinized corpses; video projects by Shimon Attie on diabetes and Douglas Gordon on mental health and war trauma; performance pieces by Angela Ellsworth, Bob Flanagan, and Kira O'Reilly; films like David Cronenberg's Crash and Marina de Van's In My Skin that fetishize body wounds; representations of the AIDS virus in the National Museum of Health and on CSI: Crime Scene Investigations; and the paintings of outsider artist Martin Ramirez. At the heart of this work is the scar--a place of production, of repetition and difference, of multiple nerve sensations, fragile skin, outer sign, and bodily depth. Through the embodied sign of the scar, Kuppers articulates connections between subjective experience, history, and personal politics. Illustrated throughout, The Scar of Invisibility broadens our understanding of the significance of medical images in visual culture. Petra Kuppers is associate professor of English at the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, and the author of Disability and ContemporaryPerformance: Bodies on Edge.

Brice Marden Crescent Moon Publishing

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

BRICE MARDEN The American artist Brice Marden (b. 1938) is one of the great contemporary painters. Brice Marden's first works were the Minimalist monochrome panels of the 1960s, large, austere, 'implacable' oil and wax paintings characterized by a precise coolness. In 1975 Marden had a one-man show at the Guggenheim Museum. Laura Garrard looks at Marden's artistic career, from the early works, the multi-panel works of the 1970s, the Sea Paintings, Grove Group, Greek and landscape works, and the 'Annunciation Series' and Thira. In the 1980s, Brice Marden developed a 'calligraphic' or 'Oriental' art, which appeared in many prints as well as large canvases. Brice Marden studied at Florida Southern College, Lakeland, and Boston University School of Fine and Applied Arts, receiving a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1961. That year, he worked at Yale Norfolk Summer School in Connecticut. In 1963 he was awarded a Master of Fine Arts degree in painting from Yale University at New Haven. He moved to New York City, and worked as a guard in the Jewish Museum. At this time he was married to Pauline Baez, the sister of Joan Baez, the singer, and had a son, Nicholas. In the mid-1960s, Marden began to have one-man exhibitions (typically at Bykert Gallery, where he had many shows). In 1966 he became an assistant to Robert Rauschenberg. In the late 1960s, Marden began making multi-panel paintings. He worked as a painting instructor at the School of Visual Arts in New York from 1969-74. He had solo shows and group shows in Europe (Milan, Turin, Paris, Dusseldorf). In 1975 there was the ten-year retrospective at the Guggenheim in New York, unusual for so young an artist. From 1973, Marden visited Greece every year. Other major shows included a one-man exhibition of drawings (1964-74) at Contemporary Arts Museum, a drawing retrospective at Kunstraum Munich, and the Whitechapel and Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam one-man shows of 1981. An exhibition of prints 1961-91 travelled to the Tate Gallery, London, Baltimore Museum of Art and the Musee d'art moderne de la ville de Paris. This is the only full-length appraisal available. Fully illustrated, with new illustrations. This book has been revised. ISBN 9781861713766. 196 pages. www.crmoon.com

Sophie Calle: The Hotel Siglio Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A forensic conceptualist's inventory of the ordinary and extraordinary lives in a Venetian hotel In 1981 Sophie Calle took a job as a chambermaid for the Hotel C in Venice, Italy. Stashing her camera and tape recorder in her mop bucket, she not only cleans and tidies, but sorts through the evidence of the hotel guests' lives.Assigned 12 rooms on the fourth floor, she surveys the state of the guests' bedding, their books, newspapers and postcards, perfumes and cologne, traveling clothes and costumes for Carnival. She methodically photographs the contents of closets and suitcases, examining the detritus in the rubbish bin and the toiletries arranged on the washbasin. She discovers their birth dates and blood types, diary entries, letters from and photographs of lovers and family. She eavesdrops on arguments and love-making. She retrieves a pair of shoes from the wastebasket and takes two chocolates from a neglected box of sweets, while leaving behind stashes of money, pills and jewelry. Her thievery is the eye of the camera, observing the details that were not meant for her, or us, to see. The Hotel now manifests as a book for the first time in English (it was previously included in the book Double Game). Collaborating with the artist on a new design that features enhanced and larger photographs, and pays specific attention to the beauty of the book as an object, Siglio is releasing its third book authored by Calle, after The Address Book (2012) and Suite Vénitienne (2015).Sophie Calle (born 1953) is an internationally renowned artist whose controversial works often fuse conceptual art and Oulipo-like constraints, investigatory methods and the plundering of autobiography. The Whitechapel Gallery in London organized a retrospective in 2009, and her work has been shown at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; the Carnegie Museum of Art, Pittsburgh; the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston; the Hayward Gallery and Serpentine, London; and the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, among others. She lives and works in Paris.

Public Art - 2867118892

Public Art AltaMira Press,U.S.

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Public Art acknowledges the trend among contemporary museums to promote participatory and processual exhibition strategies meant to elicit subjective experience. At the same time it valorizes the object-oriented tradition that has long differentiated museums from other institutions similarly committed to public service and the perpetuation of cultural values. To blend and expand these aims, Hein draws upon a movement toward ephemerality and impermanence in public art. She proposes a new dynamic for the museum that is temporal and pluralistic, while retaining a grounding in material things. The museum is an agent, not a repository; and like public art, it interacts constructively with passing and transitory publics. As an actor with social clout, the museum has moral impact and responsibilities beyond those of the individuals that comprise its collective identity. The book should be read by museum workers and students, by arts and foundation administrators, critics, educators, aestheticians, institutional historians and theorists, and by anyone interested in the transmission of cultural concepts and values.

Public Intimacy - 2878783273

Public Intimacy MIT Press Ltd

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

In this thoughtful collection of essays on the relationship of architecture and the arts, Giuliana Bruno addresses the crucial role that architecture plays in the production of art and the making of public intimacy. As art melts into spatial construction and architecture mobilizes artistic vision, Bruno argues, a new moving space--a screen of vital cultural memory--has come to shape our visual culture.Taking on the central topic of museum culture, Bruno leads the reader on a series of architectural promenades from modernity to our times. Through these "museum walks," she demonstrates how artistic collection has become a culture of recollection, and examines the public space of the pavilion as reinvented in the moving-image art installation of Turner Prize nominees Jane and Louise Wilson. Investigating the intersection of science and art, Bruno looks at our cultural obsession with techniques of imaging and its effect on the privacy of bodies and space. She finds in the work of artist Rebecca Horn a notable combination of the artistic and the scientific that creates an architecture of public intimacy.Considering the role of architecture in contemporary art that refashions our "lived space"--and the work of contemporary artists including Rachel Whiteread, Mona Hatoum, and Guillermo Kuitca--Bruno argues that architecture is used to define the frame of memory, the border of public and private space, and the permeability of exterior and interior space. Architecture, Bruno contends, is not merely a matter of space, but an art of time.

Art History after Modernism - 2867121647

Art History after Modernism The University of Chicago Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

""Art history after modernism" does not only mean that art looks different today; it also means that our discourse on art has taken a different direction, if it is safe to say it has taken a direction at all." So begins Hans Belting's brilliant, iconoclastic reconsideration of art and art history at the end of the millennium, which builds upon his earlier and highly successful volume, "The End of the History of Art?." "Known for his striking and original theories about the nature of art," according to the "Economist," Belting here examines how art is made, viewed, and interpreted today. Arguing that contemporary art has burst out of the frame that art history had built for it, Belting calls for an entirely new approach to thinking and writing about art. He moves effortlessly between contemporary issues--the rise of global and minority art and its consequences for Western art history, installation and video art, and the troubled institution of the art museum--and questions central to art history's definition of itself, such as the distinction between high and low culture, art criticism versus art history, and the invention of modernism in art history. Forty-eight black and white images illustrate the text, perfectly reflecting the state of contemporary art. With "Art History after Modernism," Belting retains his place as one of the most original thinkers working in the visual arts today.
