This book explores one of the most discussed and investigated novel foods in recent years: edible insects. The increasing demand for alternative protein sources worldwide had led the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) to promote the potential of using insects both for feed and food, establishing a program called "Edible Insects." Although several social, environmental, and nutritional benefits of the use of insects in the human diet have been identified, the majority of the population in Western countries rejects the idea of adopting insects as food, predominantly for cultural reasons.Nevertheless, international interest in promoting the consumption of insects has grown significantly, mainly in North America and Europe. This trend is mostly due to increasing attention and involvement from the scientific network and the food and feed industries, as well as governments and their constituents.The book explores the current state of entomophagy and identifies knowledge gaps to inform primary research institutions, students, members of the private sector, and policymakers to better plan, develop, and implement future research studies on edible insects as a sustainable source of food. The case studies and issues presented in this book cover highly up-to-date topics such as aspects of safety and allergies for human consumption, final meat quality of animals fed with insects, the legislative framework for the commercialization of this novel food, and other relevant issues.

The strong linkage between agriculture and industry plays an important role to expand the growth of agricultural sector.It has been argued that economic development is associated with a relative shift in the structure of a economy or inter-linkages between different sectors in an economy. In the recent phase, the Central Government, State Government, Reserve Bank of India, Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO), visualize contract farming as an important policy intervention into the economy. Contract farming envisages a symbiotic relationship between agriculture and industry The present study tries to examine the type of linkages between agriculture and industry by considering a village from the state of Odisha, which is closely associated with a sugar industry.The primary data was collected from all 141 households habitant in the villages.The study concludes that by entering into the contractual arrangement, the income level of the farmer and employment level in the rural economy has increased despite certain problems faced by the farmers like delayed payment, delay in procurement and low supply of agricultural inputs to them.

Doubled Haploid Production in Crop Plants Springer

The production of doubled haploids has become a necessary tool in advanced plant breeding institutes and commercial companies for breeding many crop species. However, the development of new, more efficient and cheaper large scale production protocols has meant that doubled haploids are also recently being applied in less advanced breeding programmes. This Manual was prepared to stimulate the wider use of this technology for speeding and opening up new breeding possibilities for many crops including some woody tree species. Since the construction of genetic maps using molecular markers requires the development of segregating doubled haploid populations in numerous crop species, we hope that this Manual will also help molecular biologists in establishing such mapping populations. For many years, both the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) have supported and coordinated research that focuses on development of more efficient doubled haploid production methods and their applications in breeding of new varieties and basic research through their Plant Breeding and Genetics Section of the Joint F AO/IAEA Division of Nuclear Techniques in Food and Agriculture. The first F AO/IAEA scientific network (Coordinated Research Programme - CRP) dealing with doubled haploids was initiated by the Plant Breeding and Genetics Section in 1986.

Securing the World Economy explains how efforts to support global capitalism became a core objective of the League of Nations. Based on new research drawn together from archives on three continents, it explores how the world's first ever inter-governmental organization sought to understand and shape the powerful forces that influenced the global economy, and the prospects for peace. It traces how the League was drawn into economics and finance by the exigencies of the slump and hyperinflation after the First World War, when it provided essential financial support to Austria, Hungary, Greece, Bulgaria, and Estonia and, thereby, established the founding principles of financial intervention, international oversight, and the twentieth-century notion of international 'development'. But it is the impact of the Great Depression after 1929 that lies at the heart of this history. Patricia Clavin traces how the League of Nations sought to combat economic nationalism and promote economic and monetary co-operation in a variety of, sometimes contradictory, ways.Many of the economists, bureaucrats, and policy-advisors who worked for it played a seminal role in the history of international relations and social science, and their efforts did not end with the outbreak of the Second World War. In 1940 the League established an economic mission in the United States, where it contributed to the creation of organizations for the post-war world - the United Nations Organization, the IMF, the World Bank, the UN Food and Agriculture Organization - as well as to plans for European reconstruction and co-operation. It is a history that resonates deeply with challenges that face the Twenty-First Century world.

This book records contributions presented at the Third Session of the EIFAC (European Inland Fisheries Advisory Commission of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations) and OlE (Office International des Epizooties) Cooperative Programme of Research on Aquaculture (COPRAQ) Fish Diseases. The session was held at the In stitute for Zoology and Hydrobiology, Veterinary Faculty, Munich, on the 23-26 October 1979. Sponsorship of the session was by the Federal Ministry of Food Agriculture and Forest of the Federal Republic of Gennany and by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG). The EIFAC was represented by Prof. Dr. N. Fijan, Zagreb, Yugosla via, and the OlE was represented by Prof. Dr. P. Ghittino, Turin, Italy and Dr. P. de Kinkelin, Thiverval-Grignon, France. The Third COPRAQ Session brought to Munich an array of scien tists from allover the world. Over 100 participants from more than 20 countries (most were from Europe, but Australia, Canada, Egypt, Israel, Kuweit, Nepal, and USA were also represented) discussed the major problems affecting the health of cultured fish. 30 papers for the slide sections and 13 papers for the poster section were submitted. Topics included were viral, bacterial, and parasitic diseases of fish, as well as emerging problems and approaches in aquaculture.
