History of art history in central eastern and south-eastern Europe vol. 2 Tako
Historia i teoria sztuki. ArtyściHistoria EuropyWydawnictwa naukowe i popularno-naukowe
Two volumes of studies were prepared in connection with the Jubilee International Conference celebrating the 200th Anniversary of the First Lecture on the History of Art at Vilna / Wilno / Vilnius University on September 14?16, 2010 in Toruń.On September 15, 1810, professor of ?etching and the literature of fine arts? Joseph (Józef) Saunders (London 1773 ? Krzemieniec, Volhynia 1854) delivered the lecture at the Faculty of Literature and Art, entitled Discours sur l?influence ou l?utilité des arts imitatifs (On the Influence and Use of Mimetic Arts), published in Polish under the title O wpływie i użytku sztuk naśladowniczych in ?Pamiętnik Magnety-czny Wileński? (?Vilna Magnetic Diary?) in 1816. The bicentenary of the first universi-ty lecture on the history of art at the Vil-na University is simultaneously the bicen-tenary of the research into art in Poland, Lithuania and Central-Eastern Europe. Af-ter World War II, the tradition of the Vilna University was inherited in Poland by the Nicolaus Copernicus University in Toruń.The book ? with 71 studies prepared by scientists from 14 countries ? is devoted to the past of art history as a scientific disci-pline and its contribution to creating na-tional and aesthetic identity of the coun-tries of Central, Eastern and South-Eastern Europe, the majority of which were de-prived of independence and subordinat-ed to partitioning of the nations in the 19th century, and in the 20th century, subject-ed to the pressure of totalitarian states. In the 19th century, these nations were often united in their fight for independence and democratic civic rights. Research, as well as providing patronage to artistic heritage, became an important element of creating national cultures. It began with the inter-est in antiquity, typical in the first half of the 19th century, and expanded to estab-lishing of institutions of culture and learn-ing (scientific societies, art schools, muse-ums, periodicals), and to creating univer-sity-based history of art. The scope of the book also encompasses national minori-ties, such as Jews, Armenians, Tatars and the Finno-Ugric peoples. Different artistic, cultural, historical, and religious traditions of states, nations and national minorities, as well as a variety of relationships of art and political and social ideologies exerted their influence on art historians, conduct-ing research on this part of Europe.Important anniversary evokes reflection both on the complicated past of the his-tory of art and on its present state in this part of Europe, the region which, after the October Revolution and then World War II, was separated from the rest of the conti-nent by a wall.Vol. 2:? The formation of art history centers? Art history and national ideologies? Art history and contemporary political and social ideologies

Art, Design, and Architecture in Central Europe 1890-1920 Yale University Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
In this unprecedentedly wide-ranging account of art, design, and architecture in the complex Central Europe of the Austro-Hungarian Empire during its momentous last decades, Elizabeth Clegg achieves a forceful integration of political and cultural developments. Comparing the situation in eight cities, among them Vienna, Prague, Budapest, Cracow, and Zagreb, the author highlights contrasts, rivalries, parallels, and interconnections across this colourful and important region. The book deals with all the chief ethnic/national categories comprising Austria-Hungary and embraces all the visual arts. Focusing on their public display, appraisal, and consumption, Clegg shows how the harmonious/antagonistic coexistence of institutions, publications, and events gave rise to the dynamic art life of a period that would end in a turning-point for Central Europe. As vividly revealed, this was a time and place marked by a simultaneous fear and celebration of ethnic, linguistic, and cultural diversity that has enormous international resonance a century later.

Court, Cloister, and City: The Art and Culture of Central Europe, 1450-1800 Univ of Chicago Pr
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The collapse of Communism in Central and Eastern Europe opened the doors to cultural treasures that for decades had been hidden, forgotten, or misinterpreted. Thomas DaCosta Kaufmann looks at Central Europe as a cultural entity while chronicling more than three hundred years of painting, sculpture, and architecture in Germany, Poland, the Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Austria, Ukraine, Lithuania and western parts of the Russian Federation. Kaufmann surveys a remarkable range of art and artifacts created from the coming of the Renaissance through to the Enlightenment. "Kaufmann throws considerable light on one of the more neglected and least understood periods in art history."--"Philadelphia Inquirer "A wonderful book which does justice both to a formal analysis of the art and to an explanation of broader political and economic forces at work."--"Virginia Quarterly Review "Important and stimulating, Kaufmann's study examines the cultural legacy of a region too little known and understood."--"Choice "Peaks of the creative heritage which [Kaufmann] describes reserve their message--and their surprises--for those who visit them in situ. But invest in Kaufmann's volume before you go."--R. J. W. Evans, "New York Review of Books

Polish female comics - Praca zbiorowa
Książki & Multimedia > Książki
Opis - No more secrets! This anthology opens the door to the vital and colorful, but very well hidden, female comics scene from Poland. 19 young comics authors tell gripping stories about their lives-childhood, adolescence as well as their current daily struggles and joys, about their fears, desires and dreams. While discovering this vibrant group of artists, you will also get a glimpse into the Polish life. The comics capture the multifaceted relationships to friends, men and very often to their dearly loved grandmothers, who might now also tell you some valuable life lessons. David Schilter. "kuš!" The book you are holding in your hands is the first ever anthology of Polish women"s autobiographical comics. At the same time, it is also a fairly good overview of the main trends in this genre. As a result, the works inside represent a somewhat narcissistic form of graphomania (unavoidable when artists are allowed to talk about themselves). It also features underground anarcho-feminist comics, reminiscent of the works in the Wimmin"s Comix anthologies. It includes redrawn photos, documents and formal experiments that lend credence to the stories told. And there are some real gems in it, such as the work of Agata Wawryniuk and Olga Wróbel.
