Gertrude Jekyll (1843-1932) was an artist, craftswoman, writer, and gardener; she is perhaps the most famous garden designers of her time. 'Gardens for Small Country Houses' was first published by Country Life in 1912, at a time when both Jekyll and Weaver were writing for the magazine. It covers the period when the Arts and Crafts Movement had evolved into country house architecture then complemented with gardens in the current style. 'Gardens for Small Country Houses' is a practical handbook which combines invaluable information on period garden design, insights into craftsmanship, planting relationships and garden restoration, and creates a fascinating and now classic text. Gertrude Jekyll's co-author, Sir Lawrence Weaver (1876-1930), was architectural editor of Country Life. He became a civil servant during the First World War (1914-1918); in 1919, he founded National Institute of Agricultural Botany, Cambridge.

Since he followed it all of his life, Richard Neutra (1892-1970) must have relished the maxim of the Greek philosopher Socrates: "The unexamined life is not worth living." In his books, articles, lectures, correspondence, and even casual conversations, Neutra constantly examined, not only his own life, but the lives of others - present and past - and the human and natural world they inhabited. Nowhere was this truer than in his autobiography "Life and Shape", first published in 1962, which now, after years of being out of print, has again happily come back to life. As opposed to "Survival Through Design" (1954), his superb collection of densely philosophical essays, Neutra took a different tack in "Life and Shape", following a lighter and more deliberately relaxed approach. It was as if the usually serious and intense Neutra was giving himself permission to reveal his richly ironic sense of humor and to probe areas in his personal experience which he had not examined as closely before. These included hitherto unrecorded memories of his parents, siblings, and his childhood and education in imperial Vienna, his numbing experiences as an Austrian artillery officer in World War I, and the beginnings of his architectural consciousness in his response to the work of Otto Wagner, Adolf Loos, Erich Mendelsohn, Louis Sullivan, and Frank Lloyd Wright. As in the autobiographies of Sullivan and Wright, "Life and Shape" concentrates on Neutra's earlier years, both in Europe and America. While he naturally recounts his memories of such well-known commissions as the Lovell Health House (1929), his own Van der Leeuv Research House (1933) and the von Sternberg House (1935), he also muses on such less famous buildings as the small, and now virtually forgotten, Mosk House (1933). "Life and Shape" also confirms Neutra's obsession with the passage of time and his firm resolution never to waste it. Like Sullivan and Wright, Neutra eschewed writing a factual chronicle, and - at the age of 70 - composed instead a meditation on the aspects of his life and work that seemed, in retrospect, to be the most interesting and significant. He felt no need to try to "include everything" but rather to present an honest recounting of his memory of his life. In writing my own "Richard Neutra and the Search for Modern Architecture" [Oxford University Press, 1982; Rizzoli Press, 2006], I relied on "Life and Shape" when I wanted an account of Neutra's experiences told in his own authentic voice. After a ten-year silence, Christopher Alexander and his colleagues at the Center for Environmental Structure are not publishing a major statement in the form of three works which will, in their words, "lay the basis for an entirely new approach to architecture, building, and planning, which will, we hope, replace existing ideas and practices entirely." The three books are The Timeless Way of Building, A Pattern Language, and The Oregon Experiment. At the core of these books is the idea that people should design for themselves their own houses, streets, and communities. This idea may be radical (it implies a radical transformation fo the architectural profession) but it comes simply from the observation that most of the wonderful places of the world were not made by architects but by the people. This book is the master plan for the University of Oregon, and is now being implemented at that university; but it shows at the same time how any community the size of a university or small town might go about designing its own future environment-with all members of the community participating personally. Nan Yar, meaning 'Who am I?', was originally spoken by Bhagavan Sri Ramana Maharshi in 1901, when he was twenty-one years old. Following his spontaneous moment of realisation as a sixteen- year-old school boy, Sri Ramana was drawn to Arunachala, a holy mountain in South India, which he never left. It was while he was living in a cave on the mountain's slopes that he was questioned§by a man called Sivaprakasam Pillai.'Sri Ramana wrote his answers with his finger in the sand§because this was the period in which he found it difficult to speak. Naturally this writing medium produced short, concise answers. 'Sivaprakasam Pillai didn't write down these answers.§After each new question was asked, Sri Ramana wiped out his previous reply and wrote a new one in the sand. When he went home, Sivaprakasam Pillai wrote down what he could remember of this silent conversation.'About twenty years later Sivaprakasam Pillai published these questions and answers as an appendix to a biography of Sri Ramana that he had written and published. There were thirteen questions and answers in this first published version.'Sri Ramana's devotees appreciated this particular presentation. Ramana Ashram published it as a separate booklet, and with each edition more and more questions and answers were added. The longest version has about thirty.'At some point in the 1920s Sri Ramana himself rewrote this series of questions and answers as a prose essay, elaborating on some answers and deleting others. This is now published under the title Who Am I? in Sri Ramana's Collected Works and separately as this small book. It is Sri Ramana's summary of answers written more than twenty years before.'§Nan Yar, or Who Am I? contains the core of Sri Ramana's teachings with a focus on Self-inquiry. Although Sri Ramana had not studied the scriptures when he first answered the questions, it is a spiritual classic that is in line with both the Vedanta [Indian philosophy] and Yoga traditions. He answered the questions posed to him that day from the Self, reflecting the ancient wisdom of India and the contemporary wisdom of his time.§There is no doubt that the importance Sri Ramana gave to Self-inquiry as the most direct route to Self-realisation has attracted enormous attention from serious Western seekers of Truth in the last years. Not only his teachings have attracted attention but also his exemplary lifestyle and the sattvic [pure] nature of his mind - which are visibly reflected in the architecture of his ashram.§The paragraph that begins his essay was not given out in response to a question. It was composed by Sri Ramana when he was rewriting the work in the 1920s. Many philosophical works begin with a statement about the nature of happiness and the means by which it can be attained or discovered. Sri Ramana has followed this tradition.§It is with great pleasure that Open Sky Press has decided to make this classic text available in new translations in several European languages, ably supported by a host of recently digitally re-mastered photographs for which we thank Mr. Sundaram, President of Sri Ramana Ashram.
