The guitar is not the first instrument one associates with the towering figure of Beethoven, but he did know and appreciate the instrument, and even wrote some chamber music pieces for it.This imaginative recital of chamber music by Beethoven takes its inspiration from the Romantic poem of the album title which describes the kind of unattainable love to which Beethoven was throughout his adult life susceptible, and from which he appears himself to have drawn creative energy. His own setting of Adelaide (the text of which appears in the booklet in both Matthisson's original and in English translation) was arranged by the 19th-century guitarist-composer Nicholas Coste; it introduces not only the playful Op.8 Serenade, perhaps the most obvious contender among Beethoven's music for a transcription of the piano part to the piano, but movements from two of his string quartets and even the funeral march from his Piano Sonata Op.26, transcribed for guitar solo or duo and played here on instruments of the period by a young and dynamic ensemble of European musicians, led by Izhar Elias, who have already released acclaimed recordings on Brilliant Classics, including guitar music in memory of Debussy (9246), spectacular transcriptions of Rossini arias (93902) and a sparkling survey of 17th-century music from the Spanish territories (94352). It is fitting that the first repertoire chosen for this recording with Czech Philharmonic is music that has been central to the pianist for most of his life. Antonín Dvorˇák’s Piano Concerto in G minor is the least known of the composer’s three completed concertos. It was written during 1879 and was premiered in Prague in March 1878 by pianist Karel ze Slavkovsky, the orchestra being led by Adolf Cˇech. It has only been revisited infrequently by a handful of pianists since. In the autumn of 1989, when the communist regime finally gave way to democracy, and playwright Václav Havel became the head of state, Rudolf Firkušný finally agreed to return to Prague. On the 28th May, 1990, he performed the solo part in Bohuslav Martinu’s Piano Concerto no.2 at the Prague Spring festival with the Czech Philharmonic under the direction of Jirˇí Beˇlohlávek. It was an extraordinary confluence of events: pianist Firkušný returning to Prague after 44 years of exile, in order to perform a work he had premiered in Paris in 1935, the writer of which being an eminent Czech composer in the 100th year anniversary of his birth. On this newly compiled 2cd set we can now find Firkusny’s recordings of the Dvorak piano concerto as well as both the Dvorak piano quintets. A unique rerelease of a very important recording.

Although perhaps better known for his Lieder and piano music, both of the works heard on this new recording by the Daniel Quartet are from Robert Schumann’s significant oeuvre of chamber music. Remarkably, it was within a single year (1842), at the start of his career, that Schumann wrote his three String Quartets Op.41 and the Piano Quintet Op.44; both are now considered pillars of the chamber music repertoire. Schumann was well acquainted with examples of the genre by Haydn, Mozart and Mendelssohn, and passionate studies of Beethoven’s quartets preceded his own works. He adapted elements from these older compositions into his new music, and easily transposed his writing for full orchestra to the smaller ensemble. Schumann’s song-like melodies are brought to life in this lively new release, with the exuberant character of the music palpable in the Daniel Quartet’s performance. Schumann himself described the String Quartet in A major as one of the best things he had ever written, and the Piano Quintet in E flat major is similarly considered one of Schumann’s best compositions.
