Historical Memoir of the Last Year of the Life of Frederick II, King of Prussia (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Historical Memoir of the Last Year of the Life of Frederick II, King of Prussia Notwithstanding his desperate situation, he did not remit for a moment his custom, to read all the dispatches of his foreign ministers, to dictate every morning, from four to seven, the answers that were to be sent immediately to those dispatches, and to keep up a regular correspondence with the ministers of his cabinet and those for foreign affairs, on all great political concerns. Thus did he continue, during those seven months of the year 1786, to labour in establishing his last grand System of the Germanic Union; at the same time he interposed, as efficaciously as circumstances would permit, in the disputes of Holland, and maintained the principles he had laid down, and the rights of his own state against the claims of the city of Dantzic. He kept up the same exact and daily correspondence with the ministers in the department of justice, and in that of finance; and directed himself, without any minister or general, the whole of the military correspondence, dictating his orders to his secretaries and aid-du-camps. I remember that, a few days before his death, he even prescribed to these last all the manoeuvres that were to be performed at the reviews in Silesia, adverting to the minutest circumstances of locality. At the same time he sent for General D' Anhalt to Potzdam, to impart some grand arrangements for the levy of free battalions, to expedite the movement of the army in case of a war, with other matters. In the same circumstances, he ordered to Potzdam the ministers of state De Hoym and De Werder, and the privy counsellor Suchtz from Pomerania, to settle with them some new plans for the cultivation of land, and the improvement of manufactures, which he proposed to have executed in 1787, in the different provinces; and particularly that which he had so much at heart, to have new villages built at his own expence in all the districts, where the labourers resided on plains of too great extent, or where population appeared to be too limited. He took also particular pleasure in the execution of a design he had entertained, to cause 300 sheep and rams to be brought from Spain, in order to improve the breed of our own flocks. Travel in the Two Last Centuries of Three Generations (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Travel in the Two Last Centuries of Three Generations Travelling on the Continent and in this country, apart from its temporary dislocation by the war, is a matter of ease, convenience and speed nowadays, and it is interesting to look back upon the conditions under which our grandfathers made their journeys, and the way in which their travelling experiences reflected the historical situation of the times. Crossing the Channel in the days of the sailing ship was no light matter, and the stage coach was a very different means of travel from the railway carriage and the motor-car of to-day. The editor has the good fortune to possess, among family papers, several records of journeys in England and abroad undertaken by his parents, grandparents and great-grandparents, and ventures to put some selections of them forward in these pages as glimpses of the altering travel conditions from the period before to the latter part of the nineteenth century, and as interesting sidelights on European history during these changing times. Some of the journeys are peaceful and uneventful, but one nearly ended in disaster. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Days and Ways in Old Boston (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Days and Ways in Old Boston Impressed with the interesting changes that had taken place in Boston and its business methods within the last two generations, we began some time since the preparation of a brief pamphlet calling attention to some of these changes which had occurred during the business life of Mr. R. H. Stearns, who founded this business in 1847 and died in 1909. It was our intention to distribute gratuitously this pamphlet (partly advertising and partly historical) among our customers. As the work progressed, however, we found so much of interest which had occurred in the year '47 and so much of Boston history which was connected with our present location, that the original plan of a small booklet was abandoned. Moreover, competent judges advised us that the material thus collected was of more than passing importance - most of it indeed being of real historic value - which could not fail to interest a much wider circle of readers. We therefore decided to eliminate the advertising matter (unless occasional reference in signed articles or illustrations showing some of the changes which have taken place at the historic corner where this business is now located could be so construed) and to print in permanent book form the material which had been collected. This volume is the result. This volume is the result. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Christian Days and Thoughts Dr. Peabody left directions that a volume like this, of a somewhat private and domestic character, should be pre pared from his writings. He loved to associate particular scenes and trains of thought with the days set apart for them by the Church. In order to increase the inżuence of such associations, more especially among the young of his own Society, he had, for a long time, been intending to prepare a book of this kind. It was much in his thoughts dur ing his last sickness; but he was too8 Preface. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Lives of the Popes, Vol. 17 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Lives of the Popes, Vol. 17: In the Middle Ages Sources. - As there is no extant contemporary biography of Nicholas, the best source for his life is his Register which has been published in two volumes by E. Langlois (Paris, 1905). The editor has done his work well, adding a number of most useful tables. One gives the numbers in his edition which correspond with certain of the documents analysed by Potthast. Another puts the bulls in their proper chronological order; a third gives their "incipits", and the last an index of proper names. The only thing one misses is an introduction such as Prou prefixed to his edition of the Register of Honorius IV. The first thing that strikes one in looking over the Register of Nicholas IV. is the number of indulgences which he granted to those " who had confessed their sins, were truly sorry for them", and who had paid a visit to some church on certain feast days. The indulgences varied from "forty days "to "two or three years". This Register also shows that the custom of assigning cardinal-protectors to persons and institutions was growing. Scottish Chiefs (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Scottish Chiefs The copy of "Scottish Chiefs" which was the companion of my early days had a cover of dark red cloth and when I first caught sight of the last American edition bound in gay tartan I felt a certain bereavement, as if I had lost a friend. The volume of my childhood had been literally "read to death," the common occurrence being that while I was finishing my allotted chapter a younger sister was dancing disturbingly on one foot, awaiting her turn to know what might be happening to Sir William Wallace. When, however, the beloved book lay before me for this present re-reading, the magic was still there and my eyes flew to lines that had thrilled me long ago: "It was the iron head of an arrow which the moon had silvered; and Ker, catching it up exclaimed: 'Wallace is safe! This calls us to Glenfinlass!'" (Oh, so many years since the arrow had first called me to Glenfinlass; how eagerly I followed, and how ready I was to follow again!) Then I turned another leaf, haphazard and met the passage: "And by the ghost of that same Fergus, I swear," exclaimed Murray, "that my honest claymore shall never shroud its head while an invader be left alive in Scotland!" I might have been a child again, hearing my mother's voice calling me to supper from my nook in the window-seat, while I pleaded: "Oh! only five more minutes, please! Wallace has just rescued Lady Helen and hes bearing her in his arms over the rushing torrent on a bridge of a single tree!" There was a particular passage that incited us to dangerous acrobatics in those young days. It was one of the miraculous feats of strength and skill daily performed by the gallant Wallace, that acted as a direct inspiration to similar exploits, - exploits most difficult to achieve in the upper chamber of a Maine cottage with beds, chairs and stools to serve for Highland scenery: "Looking up I beheld a young chieftain with a bow in his hand leaping from cliff to cliff, till, springing from a high projection on the right he alighted at once at the head of a wounded deer."
