The stunning, classic coming-of-age novel written by one of America's foremost Southern writers§§A legendary author on par with William Faulkner and Flannery O'Connor, Thomas Wolfe published Look Homeward, Angel , his first novel, about a young man's burning desire to leave his small town and tumultuous family in search of a better life, in 1929. It gave the world proof of his genius and launched a powerful legacy.§The novel follows the trajectory of Eugene Gant, a brilliant and restless young man whose wanderlust and passion shape his adolescent years in rural North Carolina. Wolfe said that Look Homeward, Angel is "a book made out of my life," and his largely autobiographical story about the quest for a greater intellectual life has resonated with and influenced generations of readers, including some of today's most important novelists. Rich with lyrical prose and vivid characterizations, this twentieth-century American classic will capture the hearts and imaginations of every reader.

Beginning with the chilling preface, "Found among the papers of the late Diedrich Knickerbocker." Washington Irving's classic short story "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" tells the story of Ichabod Crane, a lean, lanky, and extremely superstitious schoolmaster from Connecticut, who competes with Abraham "Brom Bones" Van Brunt, the town rowdy, for the hand of 18-year-old Katrina Van Tassel, the daughter and sole child of a wealthy farmer. As Crane leaves a party, he is pursued by the Headless Horseman, who is supposedly the ghost of a Hessian trooper who had his head shot off by a stray cannonball during "some nameless battle" of the American Revolutionary War, and who "rides forth to the scene of battle in nightly quest of his head."

Peter Benchley's masterful novel of suspense has become a classic of modern fiction since it was first published in 1974. The story of the great white shark that threatens the peace of the small holiday resort of Amity on Long Island in upstate New York spawned one of the most iconic movies of the last 50 years and became a bestseller around the world. The simple, but gruesome opening of the young girl being attacked while swimming by a shark only for her remains to turn up as the tide recedes begins a powerful story which examines the many simmering emotions that lie beneath the seemingly cosy face of the town and the relationships of the men and women affected by the threat to their livelihoods and their families. The novel spawned a number of copycats, but Benchley's novel has never been surpassed.

Excerpt from The Worst Foe: A Temperance Story "A soul as full of worth, as void of pride, Which nothing seeks to show, or needs to hide." - Pope. "Woman! experience might have told me That all must love thee who behold thee." - Byron The Denesmore place stands in the suburbs of the thriving town of Staunton. To its natural loveliness the decorative hand of art has added many charms. The grand old house, old enough to be venerable, yet showing no signs of decay, nestles in the bosom of a magnificent grove of trees. A few acres in the rear of the house - all that are left of a once large farm - are carefully cultivated. The town, rapidly growing to a city, encroaches more and more upon the Denesmore homestead, threatening the ultimate destruction of its groves and meadows. In one corner of the pasture grazes a group of soft-eyed Jerseys. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Had Jane Austen lived to complete Sanditon, it would have been as treasured as her other novels. In the half-finished masterpiece, Austen fashions one of her classic heroines-Charlotte Heywood. The surviving fragment also sets the story well on its path as Charlotte begins an adventure to Sanditon where a full cast of characters becomes intertwined in various intrigues. At first, Charlotte finds amusement enough standing at her ample Venetian window looking over the placid seafront. However, before long, Charlotte discovers that scandals abound. She becomes captivated by the romance of the seaside lifestyle. But is the town of Sanditon truly a haven and will Charlotte find happiness there? Now, fully completed by respected author and Austen expert Juliette Shapiro, this new edition of Sanditon finishes the original story in a vivid style recognizable to any fan. Shapiro's prose and plot twists stay true to Austen's sensibilities at all times while capturing her romance, tragedy, humor and sardonic wit.

Master of Life Forgotten Books

Excerpt from The Master of Life: A Romance of the Five Nations This is a story of woods and waters and prehistoric scenes. Hiawatha was the founder of the famous League of the Five Nations, or Iroquois. (The "Hiawatha" of Longfellow is a different being.) The Iroquois were a town-building people. The view is here adopted, that, as between the five Iroquois tribes themselves, he was originally a Mohawk, who spent some years in Onondaga and afterwards returned to his own "nation." Field scholars now identify the Mohawks with the Hochelagans, who had been driven out from the Montreal country by Algonkins, assisted by Hurons of the West, shortly before the formation of the League. The description of their town, Hochelaga, by Jacques Cartier in 1535, and its subsequent disappearance, is one of the most fairy-like tales in history. The present book is an attempt to picture the strange ideas of the Red Man's mind, life, and melancholy. It is an aboriginal romance, without a white man in it. The Indian is here represented in the chivalrous and reverent side of his nature. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The discourse was by Rev. J. H. Mellish, and Rev. J. C. White made the closing prayer. After the collation, at which it is said near five hundred persons sat down, the president, L. D. Peaslee, called the people to order, and under the direction of the marshal. Ora Pearson Patten, a procession was formed and led by the Brass Band to the platform on the spot where the old three-story meetinghouse stood for one hundred years. One of the hymns (A) was written for the occasion, by F. B. Patten, a student of Harvard College and son of a former member of the Church. In addition to the persons named, there were representatives from churches in the vicinity. From the Free Baptist Church in Danville, Rev. J. A. Lowell, and delegate. From the M. E. National Capital Forgotten Books

Excerpt from The National Capital: Past and Present; The Story of Its Settlement, Progress, and Development; With Profuse Illustrations of Its Historical Objects, Public Buildings, Memorial Statuary, and Beautiful Homes The debate was opened by Roger Sherman, of Connecticut, who made an elaborate argument against the motion, contending that as the Union of the States was not completed, Rhode Island and North Carolina not being represented in Congress, a question so important as this one should be postponed to the next session. He declared, also, that the government could not establish a Federal town, as it was not possessed of sufficient resources. Some of the Southern members argued that the establishment of a capital would be a strong bond of union, and would greatly aid the nation in its progress and development. Fisher Ames doubted whether the government could stand the shock of such a measure, which involved as many passions as the human heart could display. Finally the question was made the special order for the 3d of September following, and on that day and the next the debate was renewed with increased earnestness. An Eastern member moved to locate the capital at some convenient place on the east bank of the Susquehanna river in Pennsylvania. A substitute was offered by a Virginia member, which provided for a place as nearly central as a convenient communication with the Atlantic ocean and an easy access to the Western territory will permit. The substitute motion was lost, and the motion for the Susquehanna location was carried by a vote of 32 to 18. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Paper Cap: A Story of Love and Labor The headdress of nationalities, and of public and private societies, has been in all ages a remarkable point of interest. Religion, Poetry, Politics, superstitions, and so forth, have all found expression by the way they dressed or covered their heads. Priests, soldiers, sailors, lawyers, traders, professions of all kinds are known by some peculiar covering of the head which they assume. None of these symbols are without interest, and most of them typify the character or intents of their wearers. The Paper Cap has added to its evident story a certain amount of mystery, favorable in so far as it permits us to exercise our ingenuity in devising a probable reason for its selection as the symbol of Labor. A very industrious search has not yet positively revealed it. No public or private collection of old prints of the seventeenth century that I have seen or heard from has any representation of an English working man wearing a Paper Cap. There is nothing of the kind in any Hone's four large volumes of curious matters; nor does Notes and Queries mention it. Not until the agitation and the political disturbance attending the Reform Bill, is it seen or mentioned. Then it may be found in the rude woodcuts and chap books of the time while in every town and village it soon became as familiar as the men who wore it. Now, if the working man was looking for a symbol, there are many reasons why the Paper Cap would appeal to him. It is square, straight, upright; it has no brim. Excerpt from The Iowa Pioneer and His Ideals: An Address Delivered by Thomas H. Macbride on June Twelfth, Nineteen Hundred and Six, Education Day of the Semi-Centennial Celebration of the City of Cedar Rapids, Iowa Humanity has learned to count 'by centuries. The great chronometer of human story ticks centennials, and we sons and daughters of time have somehow learned to listen for the music Of its mighty pendulum. Too often the deep monotone has been the roar of battle. For a thousand years the centuries have gone out in war and the new era has dawned in tumult. Only today a new energy rises in the world; the voice Of the people has at length become the voice of God, and speaking by the mouth of an American president commands the world to peace. Who doubts but that for this new fac tor in history, our twentieth century which began to fol low precedent, would still be exploding on all shores of earth in the żames of universal conżict? Such has ever been the music of the horologue of time, whose pen dulum beats centuries. Mr. Ruskin, the distinguished Englishman, would not visit America because, as is reported, he could not endure a country which had no history, which had, as he said, neither castles nor cathedrals. No doubt there may be satisfaction to some men in looking upon a lengthened past and in contemplating the remnants of some earlier age; no doubt there is inspiration in his toric lore. But if Mr. Ruskin could have been here today he had been compelled to say, if he said the truth, that for the comfort and happiness of its people Cedar Rapids 'had done more in fifty years than any town of equal size in all Europe had accomplished in no mat ter how many centuries. What need have we of that background of tyranny and wretchedness and sorrow, even though at the last culminating in the light of art and song, what need of the darkness when we may begin with light? Nature herself anticipates. She makes haste today when she would build her greatest work; she ignores the ages, only touches as in reminis cence her far, far-stretching past and rears in a few de cades her masterpiece - the palace Of a human soul. In the shadow of cathedrals, crowned by centuries of story, beneath the very arches of castellated ruin by the Rhine I have seen the unlettered peasant plowing with the family cow. To such a man what avail the cen tunes? How much of life from that old cathedral gilds his toil? Upon his sorrow-dimmed Vision what ro mantic spectacle rises, as round the castle walls in penury he stumbles during the laborious slow-grinding years of human toil? Let us rejoice that fifty years have placed here, under these skies benign, more happy, simple homes than can be found in any equal area in all the ancient world. THE GREAT GATSBY is a 1925 novel written by American author F. Scott Fitzgerald that follows a cast of characters living in the fictional town of West Egg on prosperous Long Island in the summer of 1922. The story primarily concerns the young and mysterious millionaire Jay Gatsby and his quixotic passion and obsession for the beautiful former debutante Daisy Buchanan. Considered to be Fitzgerald's magnum opus, The Great Gatsby explores themes of decadence, idealism, resistance to change, social upheaval, and excess, creating a portrait of the Jazz Age or the Roaring Twenties that has been described as a cautionary tale regarding the American Dream. Fitzgerald-inspired by the parties he had attended while visiting Long Island's north shore-began planning the novel in 1923, desiring to produce, in his words, "something new-something extraordinary and beautiful and simple and intricately patterned." Progress was slow, with Fitzgerald completing his first draft following a move to the French Riviera in 1924. His editor, Maxwell Perkins, felt the book was vague and persuaded the author to revise over the next winter. Fitzgerald was repeatedly ambivalent about the book's title and he considered a variety of alternatives, including titles that referenced the Roman character Trimalchio; the title he was last documented to have desired was Under the Red, White, and Blue. In its first year, the book sold only 20,000 copies. Fitzgerald died in 1940, believing himself to be a failure and his work forgotten. However, the novel experienced a revival during World War II, and became a part of American high school curricula and numerous stage and film adaptations in the following decades. Today, The Great Gatsby is widely considered to be a literary classic and a contender for the title "Great American Novel". In 1998, the Modern Library editorial board voted it the 20th century's best American novel and second best English-language novel of the same time period.

Kate Douglas Wiggin's beloved classic of children's literature was an immediate bestseller when it was first published in 1903. The author spent part of her childhood in rural Maine, where Kate Douglas Wiggin sets the book. The optimistic and spirited main character, Rebecca Rowena Randall is sent to live with her two strict and dour aunts in the fictional town of Riverboro, Maine. Though she is, according to her aunts, more like her shiftless father than her accomplished mother, Rebecca's joy of life, in the end, inspires them. The enormously popular story was adapted for a Broadway play in 1907, and was made into several films, including a 1938 version starring Shirley Temple. Wiggin spent her life dedicated to children's welfare. She headed the first free kindergarten in California, in the slums of San Francisco, and established a kindergarten teachers' training school with her sister. Her writing career, which began as a means of raising money for her school, spanned four decades. After the death of her first husband in 1889, she relocated back to Maine, where her summer home in Hollis is now the home to the town's Salmon Falls Library.

Excerpt from Calendar of Home Office Papers of the Reign of George III, 1773-1775: Preserved in the Public Record Office The letters calendared tell very graphically the story of the meetings at Liberty Tree, and the attack of the excited crowd upon the warehouse where the consignees were assembled. We have also a sample of the kind of oratory by means of which the emotions of the people were excited, or in which these emotions found expression. A letter left in the house of one of the consignees at Boston ran - We do not wonder in the least that your apprehensions are terrible when the most enlightened, humane, and conscientious community on earth view you in the light of tigers or mad dogs whom the public safety obliges them to destroy. Long have the people been irreconcilable to the idea of spilling human blood on almost any occasion whatsoever; but they have lately seen a penitent thief suffer death for pilfering a few pounds from scatering (sic) individuals; you boldly avow a resolution to bear a principal part in the robbery of every inhabitant of this country, in the present and future ages, of everything dear and interesting to them. Are there no laws in the Book of God and Nature that enjoin such miscreants to be cut off from among the people as troublers of the whole congregation? Yea, verily, there are laws, and officers to put them in execution, which you can neither corrupt, intimidate, nor escape, and whose resolution to bring you to condign punishment you can only avoid by a speedy imitation of your brethren in Philadelphia. It would have been matter of little surprise if those to whom such threats were addressed had yielded to them, coupled as they were with demands made with all due formality, proceeding from the town meeting, and presented by Mr. Hancock, the moderator of it, and others. But the refusal of the tea factors is firm and dignified (p. 168), though declared by the meeting to be "daringly affrontive."
