Opis - A new recording of the carefully refined, endlessly revised oeuvre of Pierre Boulez is always worth celebrating, but this one stems from a source hitherto unknown in the composer"s own instrumentarium: the recorder. In 2011 Boulez granted special permission to the Dutch recorder virtuoso Erik Bosgraaf to make his own transcription of the spectral adventure in musical space that is Dialogue de l"ombre double, originally composed for clarinet (and pre-recorded/live electronics). A later piece along similar lines, Anth"mes II for violin has become better known, but Dialogue weaves its own theatrical magic. Boulez"s eyesight is sadly reduced as he approaches his 90th birthday, and his compositional activity is at a standstill, so this new transcription is a moving celebration of the composer"s decisive contribution to postwar culture, and one to which he has happily given an imprimatur, as Bosgraaf writes in the booklet: "I noticed that Mr Boulez liked the texture right away. And he told me why. It reminded him of the origin of the piece, which was a rain song in South East Asia, where they applied a similar kind of melody technique with the human voice." To complement Dialogue de l"ombre double, Bosgraaf and Tamminga have created their own Dialogues between acoustic and electronic media which they call "Comprovisations", in which little is written down, but much agreed beforehand thanks to the deep understanding and seven-year partnership between the two musicians. Tamminga uses software (and it should be remembered that nearly all sophisticated music software owes its origin to the work of the French institute IRCAM established by Boulez as a centre of acoustic and electronic research) to capture, mutate and feedback Bosgraaf"s recorder. As Bosgraaf remarks of this fascinating release, "The food is freshly prepared every time; it doesn"t come out of the microwave." The world premiere of an important work by Boulez, in a new arrangement! Recorder virtuoso Erik Bosgraaf was personally granted permission to arrange for recorder Boulez" "Dialogue de l"ombre double", originally for clarinet and electronics. The battle for the town of Cuito Cuanavale is a myth. The conduct of Operations Modular, Hooper, Packer and Displace by South African and UNITA forces in the 6th Military Region of southeastern Angola initially prevented FAPLA and its allies from occupying the UNITA town of Mavinga. The success achieved in this endeavor then led to the conduct of offensive military operations to force FAPLA and its allies to relinquish their bridgehead over the Cuito River and to redeploy to the western bank at Cuito Cuanavale. The FAPLA deployment and occupation of Cuito Cuanavale, on the western bank of the Cuito River, was never contested militarily by opposing forces during 1987 and 1988. Drawing on his personal experience on the Cuito battlefield and elsewhere during this period, personal interviews with South African commanders who were on the ground, declassified documents and other sources, the author dispassionately relates the sequence of events that has widely become known as the Battle of Cuito Cuanavale. Opening with an overview of the military situation in southern Angola prior to the 1987 offensive by the FAPLA force and its allies to take Mavinga, this compelling narrative goes on to describe the subsequent FAPLA advance on Mavinga, the South African and UNITA forces' defensive battle on the Lomba River, the counter-offensive and pursuit by South African and UNITA forces and the attacks by South African armoured forces on the FAPLA deployments east of Cuito River. The strategic encounter battle across the breadth of the 5th and 6th military regions of southern Angola which then ensued between South African forces on the one hand, and Cuban and FAPLA forces on the other, draws this period of conflict to a close. This contribution towards an improved understanding of the South African military operations during the campaign leaves the reader with two abiding impressions: a clear, concise narrative of the clash between the opposing forces and the author's profound respect for and appreciation of his fellow South African soldier.

While living in Denver in the early 1890s, Francis Schlatter, a poor immigrant cobbler from Alsace-Lorraine, heard a voice inside his head that told him to put down his tools and go outside and walk east. For several years Schlatter, a deeply pious man, had been aware that he possessed the potential to cure people of their afflictions if he could only muster enough faith; the time to test that faith had arrived. So began a grueling two-year journey on foot that took him as far east as Hot Springs, Arkansas, then back across the Southwest to San Diego, north to San Francisco, then east to Arizona and New Mexico. A hundred years ago Francis Schlatter was one of the best-known figures in the Southwest; since then he has literally fallen off the map. A study of the history of the US Navy's gunboats and their role in building a worldwide American naval presence abroad and in combat, from the Yangtze era through to World War II. For more than half a century, American gunboats were the ships often responsible for policing small crises and provided deterrence and fast-response capabilities around the world - showing the flag, landing armed parties, patrolling river and littoral areas, and protecting ex-pats. They were often the United States' most-visible and constant military presence in far-flung foreign lands, and were most closely associated with the Far East, particularly the Philippines and China. Most famous, of course, was the multinational Yangtze Patrol. Many US gunboats were built, purchased or reassembled overseas where they usually served out their entire careers, never coming within 7,000 miles of the national homeland which they served. Numerous gunboats were captured from the Spanish during the 1898 war, many being raised from shallow graves, refurbished, and commissioned into USN service. The classic haunt of US gunboats was the Asiatic Station of China and the Philippines. Gunboat service overseas was typically exotic and the sailors' lives were often exciting and unpredictable. The major operational theatres associated with the US gunboats were the pre-1898 cruises and patrols of the earliest steel gunboats, the Spanish-American War of 1898 (both the Philippines and the Caribbean), the guerilla wars of the early 20th century Philippines and Latin America, the Asiatic Fleet and Yangtze Patrol of the 1890s-1930s, and finally World War II, which largely entailed operations in China, the Philippines, the Dutch East Indies, Alaska, and on convoy routes. It was Japan's sudden 1941-1942 'Centrifugal Offensive' that effectively spelled the beginning of the end not just of most American gunboats, but also the century-old world order in Asia that had provided US gunboats with their primary mission.
