Europa > Portugalia

Is the Algarve a paradise for hikers? If you are travelling to the south-western corner of the European continent you will already have a clear idea of the landscape. Endless stretches of sandy beaches, clear blue sea, the magnificently shaped coastal cliffs with their yellow to reddish sandstone rocks. But the Algarve - an area of land blessed with a wonderful climate - does not only consist of coast, beaches and sea. A hinterland of hills risings up higher and higher to the north to almost 1000m, the rocky coastline on the Atlantic in the west and in the east the infrequently visited Sotavento all offer other gems to explore in this region situated at the edge of Europe. The 22 coastal walks in this guide follow safe paths along the whole of the southern coastline of the Algarve. From the south-western corner of Europe and the distant Sagres they go in easy stages past the spectacular cliffs of Barlavento to the east as far as the islands and the far sandy beaches in Sotavento on the other side of the metropolis of Faro. Another 29 walks incorporate the splendour of a little frequented hinterland of the Algarve. From the superb unspoilt western coast they go across a landscape of forest and barrage weirs in the hinterland of Lagos to the gorges and picturesque peaks of the Monchique mountain range. The rivers near to the ancient town of Silves offer just as delightful walks as does the hilly countryside around the white villages of Alte und Salir. And who would have expected waterfalls in the Algarve? The outstanding highpoint is the walk across the broad river meadows of the Guadiana that forms the border with Spain. This guide aims to give you the courage to make a trip into the unknown. It opens up, together with the beach area developed by tourism, a hugely diverse landscape both geologically and in respect to its vegetation. Only if you have hiked along the coast and into the hinterland can you truthfully say that you have indeed visited this varied region. The detailed route descriptions are preceded by up-to-date information in fact-file form. Small walking maps marked with the line of the route make route finding easier and numerous photos complete the picture.

"Our only current writer who can induce such terror as the Grimm Brothers did." - Times Literary Supplement"A real chiller. . . . The book moves rapidly from beginning to end and Hitchcock ought to be advised. It would make a heck of a movie." - Evening News"He is certainly the best British novelist in his field and deserves the widest recognition." - Penguin Encyclopedia of Horror and the SupernaturalWhen a dead prostitute is found floating in the river, the local police assume it's just another routine murder. But when it turns out the woman may have been a notorious East German spy, General Charles Kirk and his assistants, Michael Howard and Penny Wise, are called in from the Foreign Intelligence Office to investigate. Kirk is baffled: the evidence of numerous impeccable witnesses proves the murder could not possibly have happened, and yet there's a dead body in the morgue to show that it did. The only clue is a wooden idol in the form of a hideous, misshapen boy, found in the dead woman's room. Soon Kirk realizes that this is no case of espionage: what he is up against is an evil centuries old and long thought vanished from the earth. And when Kirk and his colleagues get close to the truth, can they unravel the mystery before they become the next victims?John Blackburn (1923-1993) was the author of more than thirty popular thrillers in which he blended the genres of mystery, horror, and science fiction in unique and often brilliant ways. Although recognized as the best British horror writer of his time, his works have been sadly neglected since his death. This new edition of Broken Boy (1959), Blackburn's third novel, includes a new introduction by Greg Gbur.

Renewable St. Martins

Ksi±¿ki

Where does the energy we use come from? It?s absolutely vital to every single thing we do every day, but for most people, it is utterly invisible. Flick a switch and the lights go on. It might as well be magic. Science writer Jeremy Shere shows us in Renewable: The World-Changing Power of Alternative Energy that energy is anything but magical. Producing it in fossil fuel form is a dirty, expensive?but also hugely profitable? enterprise, with enormous but largely hidden costs to the entire planet. The cold, hard fact is that at some point we will have wrung the planet dry of easily accessible sources of fossil fuel. And when that time comes, humankind will have no choice but to turn?or, more accurately, return?to other, cleaner, renewable energy sources. What will those sources be? How far have we come to realizing the technologies that will make these sources available? To find the answers, Shere began his journey with a tour of a traditional coal-fueled power plant in his home state of Indiana. He then continued on, traveling from coast to coast as he spoke to scientists, scholars and innovators. He immersed himself in the green energy world: visiting a solar farm at Denver?s airport, attending the Wind Power Expo and a wind farm tour in Texas, investigating turbines deep in New York City?s East River, and much more. Arranged in five parts?Green Gas, Sun, Wind, Earth, and Water?Renewable tells the stories of the most interesting and promising types of renewable energy.

Louisiana Tigers in the Gettysburg Campaign, June-July 1863 Louisiana State University Press

Ksi±¿ki / Literatura obcojêzyczna

Previous works on Confederate brigadier general Harry T. Hays's First Louisiana Brigade-better known as the "Louisiana Tigers"-have tended to focus on just one day of the Tigers' service-their role in attacking East Cemetery Hill at Gettysburg on July 2, 1863-and have touched only lightly on the brigade's role at the Second Battle of Winchester, an important prelude to Gettysburg. In this commanding study, Scott L. Mingus, Sr., offers the first significant detailed exploration of the Louisiana Tigers during the entirety of the 1863 Gettysburg Campaign. Mingus begins by providing a sweeping history of the Louisiana Tigers; their predecessors, Wheat's Tigers; the organizational structure and leadership of the brigade in 1863; and the personnel that made up its ranks. Covering the Tigers' movements and battle actions in depth, he then turns to the brigade's march into the Shenandoah Valley and the Tigers' key role in defeating the Federal army at the Second Battle of Winchester. Combining soldiers' reminiscences with contemporary civilian accounts, Mingus breaks new ground by detailing the Tigers' march into Pennsylvania, their first trip to Gettysburg in the week before the battle, their two-day occupation of York, Pennsylvania-the largest northern town to fall to the Confederate army-and their march back to Gettysburg. He offers the first full-scale discussion of the Tigers' interaction with the local population during their invasion of Pennsylvania and includes detailed accounts of the citizens' reactions to the Tigers-many not published since appearing in local newspapers over a century ago. Mingus explores the Tigers' actions on the first two days of the Battle of Gettysburg and meticulously recounts their famed assault on East Cemetery Hill, one of the pivotal moments of the battle. He closes with the Tigers' withdrawal from Gettysburg and their retreat into Virginia. Appendices include an order of battle for East Cemetery Hill, a recap of the weather during the entire Gettysburg Campaign, a day-by-day chronology of the Tigers' movements and campsites, and the text of the official reports from General Hays for Second Winchester and Gettysburg. Comprehensive and engaging, Mingus's exhaustive work constitutes the definitive account of General Hays's remarkable brigade during the critical summer of 1863.

Two brothers were raised on a remote farm, their identity hidden and their nobility claim unknown to them. The day they discovered who their true parents were, a barbarian horde abruptly pillaged their farmhouse. The brothers miraculously escaped, but in opposite directions and unaware of each other's survival. The younger brother reached the capital Byzantium hoping for the Emperor's support, only to find out that in seventh century Europe his titles could only be defended with the sword. The older brother was rescued by Cimbrians, a mountain community that sheltered him from the Longobards, a Germanic tribe that at the time ruthlessly ruled most of Italy. As the Longobards and the Byzantines clashed, the two brothers managed to overcome life-threatening challenges, and thrived as merchants in an age of perpetual war. The younger brother succeeded in reopening sea routes from the northern shores of the Adriatic to the Middle East. The older brother expanded the river trade that connected the Alps to the sea. It was only natural that where rivers meet the sea, the two brothers would reunite. In that swampy marshland, too deep for Longobard horses and two shallow for Byzantine ships, they found the ideal cove to lay the foundations for a future commercial empire. Those few huts on stilts were the beginning of a trading community that would become the city of Venice. One of the two brothers became the first Doge, one of several historical figures depicted in this epic.

In August 1964, thousands of Simba rebels attacked and captured the city of Stanleyville in the newly independent Republic of the Congo and took more than 1,600 European and American residents as hostages, threatening to kill them if any attempt was made to recapture the city. In November of that year, after months of increasingly tense and complex discussions among the governments whose nationals were being held, an airborne assault by Belgian paracommandos dropped by American Air Force planes, combined with a CIA-piloted air strike against the Stanleyville airport, liberated most of the hostages, but only after a Simba-initiated massacre. "Dragon Operations: Hostage Rescues in the Congo, 1964-1965" provides both the political background to these events and a detailed account of the actual operations: Dragon Rouge, the operations in Stanleyville, and Dragon Noir, focused on the city of Paulis, several hundred miles away. The book highlights the difficulties in organizing an international rescue effort with insufficient joint planning and inadequate command and control among the Belgian and American forces, as well as their differing political ideas and goals. The ad hoc nature of the planning was exemplified by an initial American Special Forces plan to air drop its forces east of Stanleyville and float down the river to Stanleyville. This plan was aborted when it was pointed out that the existence of Stanley Falls between the drop zone and the city was an insuperable obstacle. The operation also suffered from the Belgian commander's colonial-era contempt for the numerical strength of the Simbas and American fears of what was in reality a non-existent Communist element in the rebel movement. "Dragon Operations" demonstrates that, despite the slapdash nature of their planning and communications aspects, as well as the distance involved, the austere support, the large number of hostages, and a lack of intelligence data, they were remarkably successful in rescuing most of the hostages. Although less than ideal, the operations worked better than expected, given the conditions under which they were conducted. This important study of an almost forgotten episode of the Cold War has much to offer to military strategists and tacticians, political scientists and students of contemporary history alike. Orginally published in 1988: 236 p. maps. ill.

In 1948 the USAF, Marine Corps and US Navy were concentrating on converting over to an all-jet force. When the Korean War started in June 1950, the USAF had built up a sizable jet force in the Far East, while the US Navy was in the early stages of getting F9F Panthers operational as replacements for its piston-engined F8F Bearcats. At about this time, the Marine Corps had also begun using the Panthers in limited numbers. Operating from aircraft carriers off the Korean coast, F9Fs helped stop the North Korean invasion within two weeks of the communists crossing the 38th Parallel. The Panthers, escorting carrier-based AD Skyraiders and F4U Corsairs, penetrated as far north as Pyongyang, where they bombed and strafed targets that the North Koreans thought were out of range. The Panthers also took the battle all the way to the Yalu River, long before the MiG-15s became a threat. The F9F's basic tasking was aerial supremacy and combat air patrols, but they also excelled in bombing and strafing attacks.

Boulez/Tamminga: Dialogues Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka rozrywkowa

A new recording of the carefully refined, endlessly revised oeuvre of Pierre Boulez is always worth celebrating, but this one stems from a source hitherto unknown in the composer?s own instrumentarium: the recorder. In 2011 Boulez granted special permission to the Dutch recorder virtuoso Erik Bosgraaf to make his own transcription of the spectral adventure in musical space that is Dialogue de l?ombre double, originally composed for clarinet (and pre-recorded/live electronics). A later piece along similar lines, Anth?mes II for violin has become better known, but Dialogue weaves its own theatrical magic.Boulez?s eyesight is sadly reduced as he approaches his 90th birthday, and his compositional activity is at a standstill, so this new transcription is a moving celebration of the composer?s decisive contribution to postwar culture, and one to which he has happily given an imprimatur, as Bosgraaf writes in the booklet: ?I noticed that Mr Boulez liked the texture right away. And he told me why. It reminded him of the origin of the piece, which was a rain song in South East Asia, where they applied a similar kind of melody technique with the human voice.?To complement Dialogue de l?ombre double, Bosgraaf and Tamminga have created their own Dialogues between acoustic and electronic media which they call ?Comprovisations?, in which little is written down, but much agreed beforehand thanks to the deep understanding and seven-year partnership between the two musicians. Tamminga uses software (and it should be remembered that nearly all sophisticated music software owes its origin to the work of the French institute IRCAM established by Boulez as a centre of acoustic and electronic research) to capture, mutate and feedback Bosgraaf?s recorder. As Bosgraaf remarks of this fascinating release, ?The food is freshly prepared every time; it doesn?t come out of the microwave.?The world premiere of an important work by Boulez, in a new arrangement!Recorder virtuoso Erik Bosgraaf was personally granted permission to arrange for recorder Boulez? ?Dialogue de l?ombre double?, originally for clarinet and electronics. Bosgraaf says: ?I noticed that Mr Boulez liked the texture right away. And he told me why. It reminded him of the origin of the piece, which was a rain song in South East Asia, where they applied a similar kind of melody technique with the human voice.? The result is a dynamic interplay between Bosgraaf?s recorder and the fascinating electronic timbres and colours. The second work on this release is a musical dialogue between Bosgraaf and electronic wizard Jorrit Tamminga, creating unheard-of sounds of the recorder interwoven in electronic sound tapestries.A great addition to the Boulez discography! And a testimony of the versatility of Erik Bosgraaf, equally at home in Baroque as in contemporary music, always curiously finding new expression possibilities for his instrument.
