James Fenimore Cooper Read Books
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
JAMES FENIMORE COOPER BY MARY E. PHILLIPS PREFACE HE intention of this simply told personal life of James Fenimore Cooper, the creator of American romance, is to have all material au thentic. The pictures of men, women, places and things are, as nearly as possible, of Coopers association with them to reproduce a background of his time and to make the man not the author its central foreground figure. From every available source since the earliest mention of the authors name, both in print and out, material for these pages has been collected. In this wide gleaning in the field of letters a rich harvest from able and brilliant pens the gleaner hereby expresses grateful appreciation of these transplanted values. Much, precious in worth and attractive in interest, comes into these pages from the generous and good among the relatives, friends, and admirers of Fenimore Cooper. And more than all others, the authors grandnephew, the late Mr. George Pomeroy Keese, of Cooperstown, New York, has paid rich and rare tribute to the memory of his uncle, with whom when a boy he came in living touch. Appeals to Coopers grandson, James Fenimore Cooper, Esq., of Albany, New York, and also to his publishers have been met in a spirit so gracious and their giving has been so generous as to command the grateful service of the writer. For rare values, in service and material, special credits are due to Mr. George Pomeroy Keese, Cooperstown, N. Y. James Fenimore Cooper, Esq., Albany, N. Y. Mr. Francis Whiting Hal sey, New York City Mr. Edwin Tenney Stiger, Watertown, Mass. General James Grant Wilson, New York City Mr. Horace G. Wadlin, Libra rian, Messrs. Otto Fleischner, Assistant Librarian, O. A. Bierstadt, F. C. Blaisdell, and others, of the Boston Public Library Miss Alice Bailey Keese, Cooperstown, N. Y. Mrs. T. Henry Dewey, Paris, France Mrs. Edward Emerson Waters, New York City and Miss Mary C. Sheridan, Boston, Mass. A LIFE of Cooper, written with some particular reference to the picturesque village among the Otsego hills, where he so long lived and in whose soil he, for some sixty years or more, has slept, has long been needed. That such a book should have become a labor of love in the hands of Miss Phillips is not more interesting than it is fortunate that the task should have been accom plished so conspicuously well. Miss Phillips has borne testimony to the resourcefulness and rare devotion with which the late Mr. Keese assisted her in researches extending over many years. None knew so well as he the personal side of Coopers whole life story none so assiduously and so lovingly, during a long life spent in Cooperstown, gathered and tried to preserve in their integrity every significant and interesting detail of it. The turning point in Coopers life was reached when he went to Cooperstown, although he wasris, France Mrs. Edward Emerson little more than a child in arms. Most curious is it that his going should have resulted from the foreclosure of a mortgage. This mortgage had been given in the late Colonial period by George Croghan, and covered a vast tract of native forest lands in Otsego. In these lands, through the foreclosure, Coopers father, soon after the Revolution, acquired a large interest, which led him to abandon his home of ease and refinement in Burlington, New Jersey, and found a new, and, as it proved to be, a permanent one in the unpeopled wilderness at the foot of Otsego Lake. Except for this accident of for tune, Leatherstocking and his companions of the forest never could have been created by the pen of Cooper.

The Big Book of World Chess Championships: 46 Title Fights
Szachy > Książki New In Chess
Wilhelm Steinitz, the winner of the first official World Chess Championship in 1886, would have rubbed his eyes in disbelieve if he could have seen how popular chess is today. With millions of players all around the world, live internet transmissions of major and minor competitions, and educational programs in thousands of schools, chess has truly become a global passion. And what would Steinitz, who had financial problems his whole life and died in poverty, have thought of the current world champion, Magnus Carlsen, who became a multi-millionaire in his early twenties just by playing great chess? The history of the World Chess Championship reflects these enormous changes, and Andre Schulz tells the stories of the title fights in fascinating detail: the historical and social backgrounds, the prize money and the rules, the seconds and other helpers, and the psychological wars on and off the board.Relive the magic of Capablanca, Alekhine, Botvinnik, Tal, Karpov, Kasparov, Bobby Fischer and the others!Andre Schulz has selected one defining game from each championship, and he explains the moves of the Champions in a way that is easily accessible for amateur players. This is a book that no true chess lover wants to miss. Andre Schulz is a respected German chess journalist. He is the editor-in-chief of the ChessBase newssite. Karsten Müller, author of #8216;Bobby Fischer, The Career and Complete Games#8217;: #8220;I like the selection of the games and the explanations are easy to understand and to the point. But the best part is how the story is told, complete with historical backgrounds and lots of anecdotes.#8221; Walter Eigenmann, Glarean Magazin: #8220;A new, entertaining and well-structured chronicle, suitable for all those chess friends who are more interested in real stories than in dry opening theory.#8221; John Watson, The Week in Chess: "I enjoyed the book immensely." Martin Breutigam, Berliner Tagesspiegel: #8220;Chess journalist Andre Schulz#8217;s story covers a lot of ground over a wide period of time and is full of interesting facts and assessments.#8221; Uwe Bekemann, Deutscher Fernschachbund: #8220;Schulz handles his material very well and his style is that of a historiographical narrator. An excellent documentary book that every chess player should have who is not just interested in the game itself.#8221; Matthew Sadler, author of 'Chess for Life': "I read it from cover to cover with great pleasure." Daniel King, creator of the Power Chess DVD Series: "These colourful personalities, it is fascinating to learn about their lives (..) With all kinds of gossip that was new to me. A very entertaining book." Florian Jacobs, Max Euwe Centre Amsterdam: "All the matadors get the attention they deserve, there is a considerable number of pictures and every few pages there is a really wonderful anecdote." B.H.Wilders, Nederlands Dagblad: "A splendid book (..) They used to say: this book belongs in your library -- and I am saying that now." Chris Wainscott, ChessIQ: "From Steinitz playing for reduced fees when proper stakes could not be raised by his challengers to the lights going out on Anand and Topalov this book covers historically interesting facts pertaining to the matches. This book also does a good job o f going beyond the matches themselves to get into many of the details regarding the players (..) I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys learning about the history of the royal game and give it five out of five stars." Johan Hut, Noordhollands Dagblad: "A fantastic book." CHESS Magazine (UK): "The 46 matches for the world title have produced much magnificent chess, as well as plenty of off-the-board drama. Schultz succinctly but enjoyably recounts the background to each contest, as well as all the incidents which occurred during it."

Hit Makers Penguin LCC US
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
NATIONAL BESTSELLER"This book picks up where The Tipping Point left off ." -- Adam Grant, Wharton professor and New York Times bestselling author of ORIGINALS and GIVE AND TAKENothing "goes viral." If you think a popular movie, song, or app came out of nowhere to become a word-of-mouth success in today's crowded media environment, you're missing the real story. Each blockbuster has a secret history-of power, influence, dark broadcasters, and passionate cults that turn some new products into cultural phenomena. Even the most brilliant ideas wither in obscurity if they fail to connect with the right network, and the consumers that matter most aren't the early adopters, but rather their friends, followers, and imitators -- the audience of your audience. In his groundbreaking investigation, Atlantic senior editor Derek Thompson uncovers the hidden psychology of why we like what we like and reveals the economics of cultural markets that invisibly shape our lives. Shattering the sentimental myths of hit-making that dominate pop culture and business, Thompson shows quality is insufficient for success, nobody has "good taste," and some of the most popular products in history were one bad break away from utter failure. It may be a new world, but there are some enduring truths to what audiences and consumers want. People love a familiar surprise: a product that is bold, yet sneakily recognizable.Every business, every artist, every person looking to promote themselves and their work wants to know what makes some works so successful while others disappear. Hit Makers is a magical mystery tour through the last century of pop culture blockbusters and the most valuable currency of the twenty-first century-people's attention. From the dawn of impressionist art to the future of Facebook, from small Etsy designers to the origin of Star Wars, Derek Thompson leaves no pet rock unturned to tell the fascinating story of how culture happens and why things become popular. In Hit Makers , Derek Thompson investigates:- The secret link between ESPN's sticky programming and the The Weeknd's catchy choruses- Why Facebook is the world's most important modern newspaper- How advertising critics predicted Donald Trump- The 5th grader who accidentally launched "Rock Around the Clock," the biggest hit in rock and roll history- How Barack Obama and his speechwriters think of themselves as songwriters- How Disney conquered the world-but the future of hits belongs to savvy amateurs and individuals- The French collector who accidentally created the Impressionist canon- Quantitative evidence that the biggest music hits aren't always the best- Why almost all Hollywood blockbusters are sequels, reboots, and adaptations- Why one year--1991--is responsible for the way pop music sounds today- Why another year --1932--created the business model of film- How data scientists proved that "going viral" is a myth- How 19th century immigration patterns explain the most heard song in the Western Hemisphere

Shadow Lane Volume 9 CCB Publishing
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The ninth volume of Shadow Lane is something of a time machine, with its opening story set in The Summer of Love, when a tough marine recruiter falls hard for the adorable hippie girl he has just spanked even harder. (Long time fans will appreciate the fact that the Sergeant is Michael Flagg's dad.) The history of Hugo Sands begins in the 1980's, with a series of spanking romances between the esoteric magazine publisher and the playfully submissive young women who cross his path seeking adventure and fortuitously fall into his well-tailored lap. Cut to Random Point at the Millennium, where handsome former-detective Michael Flagg acquires a tavern and inches ever closer to the conquest of his elusive Marguerite, pausing only to civilize his tomboy of a barmaid along the way. Elsewhere in the village the contrary Pamela is taken up by the master she deserves, the irreverent Susan Ross receives a long awaited comeuppance from an unexpected quarter, and the amiable Sloan Taylor finds the love of his life in the aisles of his enchanted bookshop. Meanwhile, on the West Coast, bold Brooke Neuman finances her freshman year at film school working at a Hollywood dungeon, where her insolence arouses the interest of a cynical screenwriter whom she infuriates, bewitches and neatly slays on the alter of love. B&D fireworks of every description illuminate the battle of the sexes in Random Point on New Year's Eve. About the Author: In Random Point, everything is linked to spanking and this is true for the author of the Shadow Lane novels as well. Eve Howard has been writing and producing spanking erotica since the 1980's. Eve has written, directed and produced over 150 spanking videos. Female-friendly and designed to make people feel good, rather than guilty, about being into spanking, Eve suggests an irreverent alternative to the all or nothing B&D subculture portrayed in such beloved classics as The Story of O. Many spanking fans have discovered the real life spanking scene by following the same patterns of social networking as described in the Shadow Lane novels. And for almost twenty years, Eve's company Shadow Lane has been one of the primary social organs of the real life spanking scene. There are nine titles in the Shadow Lane series and Eve is currently working on Volume 10. She lives with her husband Tony Elka and their three cats in Las Vegas.

Big Sleep and Other Novels Penguin Books
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Raymond Chandler was America's preeminent writer of detective fiction, and this "Penguin Modern Classics" edition of "The Big Sleep and Other Novels" collects three of the best novels to feature his hard-drinking, philosophising PI, Philip Marlowe. Raymond Chandler created the fast talking, trouble seeking Californian private eye Philip Marlowe for his first great novel "The Big Sleep" in 1939. Often imitated but never bettered, it is in Marlowe's long shadow that every fictional detective must stand - and under the influence of Raymond Chandler's addictive prose that every crime author must write. Marlowe's entanglement with the Sternwood family - and an attendant cast of colourful underworld figures - is the background to a story reflecting all the tarnished glitter of the great American Dream. The hard-boiled detective's iconic image burns just as brightly in "Farewell My Lovely", on the trail of a missing nightclub crooner. And the inimitable Marlowe is able to prove that trouble really is his business in Raymond Chandler's brilliant epitaph, "The Long Goodbye". Raymond Chandler (1888-1959) was born in Chicago. It was during the Depression era that he seriously turned his hand to writing and his first published story appeared in the pulp magazine "Black Mask" in 1933, followed six years later by his first novel, "The Big Sleep", adapted into Howard Hawks' classic 1946 film noir, starring Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall. If you liked "The Big Sleep and Other Novels", you might enjoy Dashiell Hammett's "The Thin Man", also available in "Penguin Modern Classics". "One of the greatest crime writers, who set standards that others still try to attain". ("Sunday Times"). "Raymond Chandler invented a new way of talking about America, and America has never looked the same to us since." (Paul Auster, author of "The New York Trilogy"). "Chandler wrote like a slumming angel and invested the sun-blinded streets of Los Angelos with a romantic presence". (Ross Macdonald, author of "The Drowning Pool").

We meet his mother, Lavender, a seventeen-year-old girl pushed to desperation; Hazel, twin sister to Ansel's wife, inseparable since birth, forced to watch helplessly as her sister's relationship threatens to devour them all; and finally, Saffy, the detective hot on his trail, who has devoted herself to bringing bad men to justice but struggles to see her own life clearly. Recitatif Knopf Doubleday Publishing Group
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
A beautiful, arresting story about race and the relationships that shape us through life by the legendary Nobel Prize winner for the first time in a beautifully produced stand-alone edition, with an introduction by Zadie Smith A puzzle of a story, then a game.... When [Morrison] called Recitatif an experiment she meant it. The subject of the experiment is the reader. Zadie Smith, award-winning, best-selling author of White TeethIn this 1983 short story--the only short story Morrison ever wrote--we meet Twyla and Roberta, who have known each other since they were eight years old and spent four months together as roommates in St. Bonaventure shelter. Inseparable then, they lose touch as they grow older, only later to find each other again at a diner, a grocery store, and again at a protest. Seemingly at opposite ends of every problem, and at each other's throats each time they meet, the two women still cannot deny the deep bond their shared experience has forged between them. Another work of genius by this masterly writer, Recitatif keeps Twyla's and Roberta's races ambiguous throughout the story. Morrison herself described Recitatif, a story which will keep readers thinking and discussing for years to come, as "an experiment in the removal of all racial codes from a narrative about two characters of different races for whom racial identity is crucial." We know that one is white and one is Black, but which is which? And who is right about the race of the woman the girls tormented at the orphanage? A remarkable look into what keeps us together and what keeps us apart, and how perceptions are made tangible by reality, Recitatif is a gift to readers in these changing times.
