Dennis Cooper - Frisk Grove Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
When Dennis is thirteen, he sees a series of photographs of a boy apparently unimaginably mutilated. Dennis is not shocked, but stunned by their mystery and their power; their glimpse at the reality of death. Some years later, Dennis meets the boy who posed for the photographs. He did it for love. Surrounded by images of violence, the celebrity of horror, news of disease, a wasteland of sex, Dennis flies to Europe, having discovered some clues about the photographs: "I see these criminals on the news who've killed someone methodically, and they're free. They know something amazing. You can just tell." What they know may lie in bodies themselves. Bodies are unavoidably real; what's in them must have something to say, even in a society that lives on images and fantasies. An isolated windmill in Holland provides the perfect setting for Dennis to find out more about bodies--of which there are many--and what is inside them. In Frisk, as in the award-winning Closer, Dennis Cooper explores the limits of our knowledge and the dividing line between the body and the spirit. Frisk is a novel about the power of fantasy and faith, about the ecstasy and horror of being human. The body's power extends to us all, but what power do we have over it, over its appetites and satisfactions? The answer to these questions is a work of imaginative courage and clarity: a murder mystery that implicates us all and a horror story in which the monster is love.

Rick Stein's India Random House UK Ltd
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Whenever I hear the word curry, I'm filled with a longing for spicy hot food with the fragrance of cumin, cloves and cinnamon. I see deep red colours from lots of Kashmiri chillis, tinged with a suggestion of yellow from turmeric. I think of the tandoor oven, and slightly scorched naan shining with ghee and garlic. When Indians talk of their food, they talk about their life. To understand this country, you need to understand curry. What makes a good curry? Sensual spicy aromas or thick, creamy sauces? Rich, dark dals or crispy fried street snacks? Rick journeys through India to find the answer, searching this colourful, chaotic nation in search of the truths behind our love affair with its food. Chefs, home cooks and street vendors hold the key to unlocking the secrets of these complex and diverse flavours - and Rick's travels take him to the heart of both their long-held traditions and most modern techniques. He uncovers recipes for fragrant kormas, delicate spiced fish and slow-cooked biryanis, all the while gathering ideas and inspiration for his own take on that elusive dish - the perfect curry.

The thirty-eight urban gems covered here range from newly created linear spaces along the water's edge, such as Brooklyn Bridge Park and the East River Waterfront Esplanade, to revitalised squares and circles, such as those at Gansevoort Plaza in the Meatpacking District and Columbus Circle, to repurposed open spaces like the freight tracks, now the High Line and Concrete Plant Park in the Bronx. Książki naukowe>Historia>Historia poszczególnych krajów i krain>Historia Europy>Historia Polski>Historia Polski 1945-1989
The Polish version of this album appeared on the market in 2006 and became one of the most popular albums published in Pomorze and Poland in the last six years. To date, seven volumes of this album have appeared. The authors of the photographs are Zbigniew and Maciej Kosycarz, father and son, photographic journalists and chroniclers. Just after the end of the Second World War in 1945, Zbigniew Kosycarz came to Gdańsk. The first photograph in the album is of an advertising pillar still with German posters on it but onto which the first Polish posters have also been stuck. The devastated city and the awakening life - these and others from the 1960s, 1970s, 1980s and 1990s were taken by Zbigniew Kosycarz, the indefatigable chronicler of Gdańsk and the region. At the turn of the 20th and 21st centuries, we often have similar situations and places but this time seen through the lens and the eyes of Maciej Kosycarz. The three hundred and twenty images selected from over a million photographs taken by Zbigniew and Maciej Kosycarz and published on a hundred and sixty pages in this album show over sixty years of the history of Poland and Europe connected with Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot and the Pomorze region. The photographs show not only great and well-known events but also and mainly the everyday lives of people, their clothes, play and work. In them you can see situations that are very similar to those in well-known images by photographers in Paris, New York or Budapest. It turns out that, at those very same times, life was also going on in Gdańsk, Gdynia, Sopot and Pomorze. And it is precisely this life, just like in those other cities, that has been captured in the photographs of Zbigniew and Maciej Kosycarz. The decision to publish the first album in 2006 was undoubtedly affected by the success of the exhibition entitled

Powieści i opowiadania
With the collapse of the Soviet Union and the rise of free speech (and publishing), Russian women have become a force in the world of letters. Whereas in the past they were known chiefly as literary widows or devoted wives, occasionally as poets or critics, and only very rarely as novelists, today they are beginning to dominate publishing lists in fiction and non-fiction alike. Nine includes three internationally known names--Ludmila Petrushevskaya, Ludmila Ulitskaya, and Svetlana Alexiyevich--as well as half a dozen other respected women authors appearing here for the first time in English.Who and what you will find in Nine:Ludmila Petrushevskaya's absurd middle-aged heroine (in 'Waterloo Bridge') finds she has fallen in love with a character in a movie. Seeing the film again and again, she experiences the romantic love she never had in real life. 'Petrushevskaya's genius consists in her ability to seize on the disparate details of everyday life and render them as a single perfect whole, in which even the most unpalatable reality is made beautiful by the perfection of her art.'Ludmila Ulitskaya's 'Diana' and 'End of the Story' look at women who lie with verve just to escape dreary reality. 'Permeated with a tolerant humorous warmth, Ulitskaya's stories exemplify that strand in the humanist tradition that neither denounces nor deifies, but attempts to understand human psychology in its infinitely numerous manifestations.'Svetlana Alexiyevich, a Byelorussian dissident, constructs powerful narrative collages out of 'live human voices' culled from her interviews with witnesses to and participants in the most shattering national events. 'She follows life rather than trying to invent it and she does so with great talent and keen vision.' Her 'Landscape of Loneliness' shows how tragic social circumstances deprive people of the ability to experience and enjoy love.Olga Slavnikova, a prolific young author from Yekaterinburg, depicts provincial life in a town where most of the men are involved in the illegal mining and cutting of precious stones. 'Krylov's Childhood' combines memorable characters with ethnographic detail.Maria Arbatova--a leading feminist famed for her frank, outspoken and witty style--is Russia's Erica Jong. 'My Name is Woman' takes place in an abortion clinic where the heroine reflects on her failed love affair and women's submissive role in love and life.Nina Gorlanova sets 'Lake Joy' in her native Siberian city of Perm--in the small, closed world of a maternity ward. As a new life is born their suburb is being flooded and they are moved to new homes to start a new life.Anastasia Gosteva takes the reader on an unusual journey around India and America ('Closing Down America'). The heroine's attempt to run away from herself and an unrequited love is in fact a desperate effort to come to terms with who she really is.Margarita Sharapova draws on her unique personal experience as a circus animal tamer to describe the world of popular entertainment. 'Brilliantly crafted, inspired prose. . . unputdownable.'Natalia Smirnova paints a disquieting picture of a provincial town in the Urals where two cultivated women must survive amidst crude working-class surroundings ('The Women and the Shoemakers'). 'Her prose is deep and subtle but by no means female.'

She sleeps through sunrise. She sleeps through sunset. And yet, in those first few hours, the doctors can find nothing else wrong. The infinite! No other question has ever moved so profoundly the spirit of man; no other idea has so fruitfully stimulated his intellect; yet no other concept stands in greater need of clarification than that of the infinite .... - David Hilbert (1862 - 1943) Infinity is a fathomless gulf, There is a story attributed to David Hilbert, the preeminent mathe into which all things matician whose quotation appears above. A man walked into a vanish. hotel late one night and asked for a room. "Sorry, we don't have o Marcus Aurelius (121- 180), Roman Emperor any more vacancies," replied the owner, "but let's see, perhaps and philosopher I can find you a room after all" Leaving his desk, the owner reluctantly awakened his guests and asked them to change their rooms: the occupant of room no. 1 would move to room no. 2, the occupant of room no. 2 would move to room no. 3, and so on until each occupant had moved one room over. To the utter astonish ment of our latecomer, room no. 1 suddenly became vacated, and he happily moved in and settled down for the night. But a numbing thought kept him from sleep: How could it be that by merely moving the occupants from one room to another, the first room had become vacated? (Remember, all of the rooms were occupied when he arrived.
