Story of the 275th Anniversary Celebration of the Founding of Southold Town Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Story of the 275th Anniversary Celebration of the Founding of Southold Town: July 21-25, 1915 The history of an event cannot be written a few months after it takes place, but the story of it can be told at any time by anybody who chanced to be an eye-witness, and usually with a certain degree of interest. Such an account will not be accurate in every detail, possibly, but it will convey an impression that is honest at least, and that may not as a whole be far from the truth. The report that appeared in the Long Island Traveler the week following the Celebration, seemed to serve the purpose for which it was designed, viz., to portray to friends who were fardistant from the old town, and recall to those who were present, the four eventful days of the Celebration. It is therefore used as a basis of the story that will attempt, in lieu of history, to preserve a record of events that time may prove as epoch-making. "How did it all happen?" is the eternal question that must be answered first. Like many other large growths, it came from small plantings, and this is another fact that adds to the interest in the great Celebration of 1915. About one year before it took place, a few people were casting about in their troubled minds as to ways and means of raising funds for the Southold Library. A summer resident, Miss Mabel Stone, suggested a Pageant. What was a Pageant? That was an old word, but it had a new meaning. Anybody who desired to know what it meant, might go on a certain afternoon to the home of Mrs. Mary H. Dayton and then and there the modern mysteries of the word would be revealed by Miss Stone. About a dozen people listened to the description of a Pageant in which the speaker had been interested, with the result that not one of the listeners thought such a form of dramatic representation practicable for Southold. Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Excerpt from The Story of Nuremberg I am painfully aware of the defects of this little book, and still more painfully unaware of its errors. The best excuse for the mistakes that have surely crept in is the vast scope and variety of my subject - the story of the old medićval town which was for long the centre of German industry and thought. But, for a guide-book, accuracy is above all things desirable, and I shall therefore be deeply grateful to the courtesy of any of my readers, who, having discovered any error or omission, will kindly point it out to me. The sources from which I have drawn are far too numerous to acknowledge in detail. But in the matter of topography and architecture a more express note of indebtedness is due to the devoted labours of R. von Rettberg, A. von Essenwein, and Ernst Mummenhoff. Above all, I must pay my tribute of gratitude and acknowledgment to the enthusiastic erudition of Dr Emil Reicke, whose mighty volume, Geschichte der Reichsstadt Nürnberg, is a mine of information from which I have freely quarried. Lastly, to those old chroniclers at whom I have sometimes laughed, but whose quaint phrases and legends may have saved these pages from too serious a dulness, I now hasten to make amends and to assure them that I am very conscious of my own inferiority as a story-teller. Story of the 9th King's in France (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Story of the 9th King's in France The early parades of the Regiment took place at Rose Hill Police Station, and the Corn EX change, Brunswick Street, until Headquarters were established at 16, Soho Street. To those who took part in these parades great credit and thanks are due. Through their efforts an organised battalion came into being, men were trained for the bearing of arms and the defence oftheir country should the occasion ever arise, and the soldierly spirit was inculcated in many who followed a civilian occupation. Those who sur vived until the Great War, though not privileged to lead on the battlefield, had at any rate the satisfaction of realising that their work was not in vain. Directly attributable to the efforts of the early volunteers is the fact that in 1915 the Territorial Force was ready for the reinforcement of the Regular Army in the Western Theatre of the War, and this afforded the New Armies which Lord Kitchener had formed ample time for the completion of their training. In 1884 the Headquarters in Soho Street were changed for more commodious and better equipped premises at 59, Everton Road, where the Battalion remained domiciled until 1914. During the South African War the Battalion sent out a company, and the experience the men gained there proved very useful at the annual camps. Several of the men who went to South Africa were privileged to serve in the next war. On the formation of the Territorial Force the Battalion was once again renumbered and henceforth it was known as the 9th Battalion of The King's (liver pool Regiment) Territorial Force. The recruiting area of the Battalion embraced the Everton district of Liverpool, a locality in habited chieży by members of the tradesmen and artisan classes, which furnished the Regiment with the bulk of its recruits. There was a detachment located in the country at Ormskirk, from which the Battalion drew some of its finest fighting material. Agriculturalists make good soldiers, and this was evidenced on many occasions later by the behaviour and ability of the men from this town. In the ranks there was a sprinkling of sailors and miners, whose several callings equippedthem with knowledge which proved useful in their new profession. The officers for the most part were drawn from the professional class and business houses of the city. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. London Town, Past and Present, Vol. 1 of 4 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from London Town, Past and Present, Vol. 1 of 4: Historical, Descriptive, Anecdotal Although of books on London the name is legion, the reception accorded to the present work in serial form has shown that there was room left for a book which aims at giving, in the itinerary form, a descriptive and historical account of the cities and boroughs that make up the Administrative County of London, with some speculations upon the future of the Metropolis. The reader Who may fail to find in the following pages something which he would have included had he been the writer will, I hope, in his charity, make allowance for the difficulty created by the immense mass of material available. At every step in the journey it has been necessary, from exigencies of space,-to reject matter which clamoured for acceptance; and many an unhappy quarter of an hour has been spent in deciding between subjects which had exasperatingly equal claims to inclusion. Should the reader's eye fall upon a mistake, the same charity will, I trust, lead him to reżect that the work embraces thousands of names and dates and facts and allusions, and that in the history of London, in spite of the good work done of late years by many diligent students, there is still no lack of slippery places. At the cost of some slight repetition I have aimed at making each chapter as far as possible self-containing, so that the reader may not be distracted by a multitude of cross-references. In the section which has the City of London for its theme, I have been glad to draw upon the books published under the auspices of the ancient City Corporation, among them Riley's Memorials of London Life, Price's Historical Account of the Guildhall, Dr. Reginald Sharpe's London and the Kingdom, and Mr. Charles Welch's Modern History of the City of London; and throughout the work I have been greatly helped by the publica tions of the London County Council - notably the wonderful collection of facts and figures entitled London Statistics, and the booklets that authoritatively tell the story of the houses to which the Council has affixed commemorative tablets. I have also to make acknowledgment to Thornbury and Walford's Old and New London, the last edition of which it was my pleasant task to revise and bring up to date to the graceful and scholarly writings of the Rev. Think 'Woodstock' and the mind turns to the seminal 1969 festival that crowned a seismic decade of sex, drugs and rock 'n' roll. But Woodstock itself was over 60 miles from the site to which the fabled half a million flocked. So why the misnomer? Quite simply, Woodstock was already a key location in the Sixties rock landscape, the tiny Catskills town where Bob Dylan had holed up after his 1966 motorcycle accident. In Small Town Talk, Barney Hoskyns recreates Woodstock's community of brilliant dysfunctional musicians, opportunistic hippie capitalists and scheming dealers drawn to the area by Dylan and his sidekicks The Band. Central to the book's narrative is the broodingly powerful presence of Albert Grossman, manager of Dylan, The Band, Janis Joplin and Todd Rundgren - and Big Daddy of a personal fiefdom in Bearsville that encompassed studios, restaurants and his own record label. Intertwined in the story are the Woodstock experiences of artists as diverse as Van Morrison, Jimi Hendrix, Paul Butterfield, Tim Hardin, Karen Dalton and Bobby Charles. Drawing on first-hand interviews with the remaining key players in the scene, and on the period when he lived there himself in the 1990s, Hoskyns has produced an East Coast companion to his bestselling LA Canyon classic Hotel California - a richly absorbing study of a vital music scene in a revolutionary time and place.

Excerpt from Wood Leighton, or a Year in the Country, Vol. 1 of 3 In publishing a work like the present, wherein an actual locality is given, a few observations are necessary. I have chosen as the scene of the following stories and characters the town and neighborhood in which my own youth was spent, not only because it afforded ample material for one who desired to make a book characteristic of English country life, but also from the great delight I had in recollecting scenes associated with the pleasures of my earlier years, and from the uncommon beauty of those scenes, as fair specimens of an English arcadia; and so far my work has indeed been a labor of love. And now, in especial consideration of the inhabitants of the town intended by Wood Leighton, I must acknowledge, that although I have laid the scene of Denborough Park in their neighborhood, they will look in vain for its site there. The events of that story occurred in a southern county; but in order to preserve the unity of my work I took the liberty of locating it here. Oundle's Story Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Oundle's Story: A History of Town and School I have advocated always the teaching of history from local and immediate surroundings, on the principle that you must begin where you are. The force of the imagination upon conduct may be great, but to allow the imagination an illimitable field in conjuring up the past is risky. To this end, I set out some few years ago to write an "Oundle Child's History," when some of older growth inquired, "Why leave us out?" Hence this record of Oundle's story. It is often said that there is no room for originality in the writing of history, and, certainly, this is largely true with regard to my little book; but I may claim to have spent much time in research and to have elucidated a few points. But it could not have been put together without the kind help of many friends. To some I have expressed acknowledgment in the course of the narrative, and I cannot name them all; but I desire to mention those to whom I am especially indebted. To Mrs. Smith, of Cobthorne, Oundle, to Miss Smith, of the Rectory, and to Miss Dixon, of Rose Cottage, the daughter of a lover of archaeology, I owe my sincere thanks for the loan of documents and papers. Dr. George Bidder, of Cambridge, Canon Howard, late Dean of Stamford, and Mr. A. H. M. Spence, of Pembroke College, Oxford, have kindly assisted me in confirming facts. Ontario Library Review, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Ontario Library Review, Vol. 1 Notice for Trustees. - Library boards are urged to encourage their librarians and assistants to attend the short course library training school. No library can do its best work without modern methods and a librarian with a knowledge of modern library science. A board that does less than its best for its people is unfair to them and unworthy of their trust. No pains have been spared to make this course of the highest order. Charles Canniff James, C.M.G., M.A., L.L.D., F.R.S.C., Dominion Commissioner of Agriculture. - "Discoveries in rural life," by Dr C. C. James, was written especially for this number of the Review. The author died suddenly on a radial railway car in St. Catharines while on his way to visit his son on June 23rd. The paper is probably the last public writing from Dr. James' pen. He was deeply interested in the rural population of Canada, and very recently expressed a desire to co-operate with the library workers of the Province in a study of the rural free library problem. Dr. James was the evening speaker at the recent meeting of the Ontario library association, where he dealt with the subject "Agriculture and the war." The address was highly appreciated by a large number of delegates and their friends. He rendered valuable service to his country in the interest of agriculture and science, and was noted as a lecturer and author. His published works include: "Early history of the town of Amherstburg," "The second legislature of Upper Canada," "A Tennyson pilgrimage, and Tennyson, the imperialist," "The downfall of the Huron nation," "A bibliography of Canadian poetry," "The romance of Ontario: or the peopling of the Province." The untimely death of this great Canadian is deeply regretted by all who knew him either personally or by reputation. Rural Library. - Mr. Edgar M. Zavitz, farmer - plus, tells an interesting little story in this number. Mr. Zavitz is a Quaker and a university graduate. He is a farmer, a lover of the great out-of-doors, and is on good terms with the birds, flowers, and trees, and takes an interest in the welfare of the young people - and older ones, too - of his community. On his return from college, several years ago, Mr. Zavitz foresaw how much a library would mean to the community around Coldstream. That place is on R.R. 2, Ilderton, and consists of a store and library, a township hall, a Friends meeting-house and a farm-house or two. It is, therefore, as small as a place can be and have an identity. They have a good library, of 2,500 volumes, and there are a number of interested workers on the library board. Some people tell us that larger places cannot maintain a library and offer excuses innumerable, the story of Coldstream is rather hard on their arguments and plausible excuses. The Mechanic and the Book. - An important point concerning the mechanic and the book is "sent home" in this number by Mr. J.Davis Barnett, retired civil engineer. Mr. Barnett is qualified to speak on the subject from experience. He was for some years assistant mechanical superintendent of the G.T.R., and subsequently mechanical superintendent of the Midland railway. He is a M.I.M.E., and A.M.I.C.E., and a charter member of the Canadian society of civil engineers. Mr. Barnett's library is, possibly, the largest private library in Canada; it contains 35,000 volumes, 1,500 of which are Shakespeariana. Books and Disease. - We are indebted to H. W. Hill, M.B., M.A., D.P.H., director of the Provincial Institute of Public Health for a few words on books as carriers of disease. Library workers will be pleased to be able to quote an authority like Dr. Hill and say that the chances of transmitting disease through books are very slight. About the

Excerpt from Stamford Soldiers Memorial This Stamford Soldiers' Memorial has no higher aim than to report worthily the service which the representatives of the town rendered during the recent civil war. Believing it to have been an honorable and patriotic service, it seemed to the author, due to the men who rendered it, that some record of it should be preserved. Nor did it seem less due to the credit of the town, that so important a feature of its history should be sketched while the materials for it were still within our reach. Indeed, the record which follows is but a fulfillment of the first intent of the author, in projecting the History of the town, and very appropriately follows as its supplement Besides, a grateful people would wish to rear some worthy memorial of services, such as we are here to record. Excerpt from Poems of the Turf and Other Ballads The Race For A Life ... Or The Feat Of Tecumseh When the weather's down to zero, in most every country town, It's in the store or hostlery that the talkers gather 'round; One fact I've always noted, - happens nine times out of ten, - That horse talk seems to take the lead among all sorts of men. There're some you hate to listen to - you wish they'd not begun; You yawn and draw a good long breath when their tiresome yarn is spun. And then there're others that you'd sit and listen to all night - Somehow they interest you in a way you seem to like. This was the case the other night at Sherman's new Hotel - The horsemen they had gathered in and soon commenced to tell About what they had seen and done so wonderful, you know. But soon the crowd began to yawn, and said they'd better go. Just then Ben Saunders opened up, - old Ben was seventy-two, But when he told a story, you bet we'd hear him through! - So, when Ben started up and said, "If it wasn't late, you know, I'd tell you of a scrape I had some fifty years ago!" That settled it: we all just vowed the story he must tell. I'll give you all the facts he told, but I can't tell them quite so well. I told you Ben was seventy-two - he didn't look it, though, Although his hair and whiskers were as white as driven snow. He was straight as any arrow; his eye was clear and mild, With a roguish kind of twinkle, like some little, happy child. I have watched all kinds of people and have studied many men, But I never yet have meta man that equaled Uncle Ben.
