Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Excerpt from Jake Kilrain's Life and Battles: Also, a Complete History of the Great International Prize Fight With Jem Smith for $10, 000, the Police Gazwtte Diamond Belt and Championship of the World Jake Kilrain, the American champion, who fought Jem Smith for $10,000, the "Police Gazette" diamond belt and championship of the world, stands 5 feet 10ż inches high, and weighs 210 pounds. His chest measurement is 41 inches, upon and around the biceps 16 inches, forearm 14 inches, waist 34 inches, thigh 25 inches, calf of leg 16ż inches. He wears a No 9 shoe and No. 9 glove, and it takes a 17 inch collar to encircle his neck. Kilrain gives the following interesting history of his life: "My name is Joseph John Killion. When I was a lad my comrades persisted in calling me Kilrain, and the name has stuck to me ever since, so I have bowed to the inevitable, and now write my name 'Kilrain.' I was born at Greenport, Columbia county, which is in the State of New York, and the date of my nativity is the 9th of February, 1859, so that I am twenty-eight years of age. I have no regular occupation other than training athletes and boxing, but in my younger days I worked in a rolling mill in Somerville, Mass., which is a suburb of Boston. It was here that I developed a love for athletic sports. In fact they were forced upon me, for in such a large establishment it was not to be wondered at that there were many good boxers, and as I was a gawky country boy, I was a mark for all their practical jokes. Sometimes they went too far, and when I remonstrated they laughed at me. You can bet that made me mad, so I just made up my mind that I would thrash one or two of these tormentors, and from that day I was champion of the mill. "The first customer was Jack Daley, who had fought several small ring battles, but I put him to sleep in short order. My next encounter was with Jem Driscoll, a regular giant, who, while having little or no science, could hit with the force of a trip hammer. He hurt me very badly, but I finally wore him down, and when he at last gave up his mother would scarcely have known him. I next fought Dan Dwyer. It was a long and bloody fight, but I finally managed to pull through a winner. I was very sore for a long time and thought I was internally injured. The last man that was pitted against me was Dennis Roach. He had been imported to the mill with the idea of putting an end to young Kilrain's run of luck, and they came near doing so, too. I was not very well when the day for the fight arrived, but knowing full well that I should have been branded as a coward if I backed out, I got into the ring determined to stand up as long as I was able. My antagonist was a hurricane fighter, and sought to annihilate me in a couple of rounds. He hit me in the stomach several times, and I thought that I must give in, but after a little while Roach's blows got weaker, and finding he could not hurt me much, I fought with him, and by a judicious use of my left hand managed to close up his eyes. Roach was willing to keep on fighting, although he could not see. Finally his friends took him away, and that ended my fighting career in the mill." He took to rowing, and was one of the winning crew in a four-oared race on Lake Waldron. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at

Is America the new world empire? Presidents from Lincoln to Bush may have denied it but, as Niall Ferguson's brilliant and provocative book shows, the US is the greatest military and economic colossus of all time. What's more, it always has been an empire, with its founding fathers battling westwards for territory and their successors spreading freedom across the world - at gunpoint if necessary. Yet is the US really equipped to play Atlas, bearing the weight of the world on its shoulders? America, Ferguson reveals, is now an empire running on empty, backing away from the crucial imperial commitments of time, money and manpower - and resting on perilous financial foundations. When the New Rome falls, its collapse may come from within. Unlike the majority of European writers who have written on this subject, I am fundamentally in favor of empire. Indeed, I believe that empire is more necessary in the twenty-first century than ever before. The threats we face are not in themselves new ones. But advances in technology make them more dangerous than ever before. Thanks to the speed and regularity of modern air travel, infectious diseases can be transmitted to us with terrifying swiftness. And thanks to the relative cheapness and destructiveness of modern weaponry, tyrants and terrorists can realistically think of devastating our cities. The old, post-1945 system of sovereign states, bound loosely together by an evolving system of international law, cannot easily deal with these threats because there are too many nation-states where the writ of the "international community" simply does not run. What is required is an agency capable of intervening in the affairs of such states to contain epidemics, depose tyrants, end local wars and eradicate terrorist organizations. This is the self-interested argument for empire. But there is also a complementary altruistic argument. Even if they did not pose a direct threat to the security of the United States, economic and social conditions in a number of countries in the world would justify some kind of intervention. The poverty of a country like Liberia is explicable not in terms of resource endowment; otherwise (for example) Botswana would be just as poor. The problem in Liberia, as in so many sub-Saharan African states, is simply misgovernment: corrupt and lawless dictators whose conduct makes economic development impossible and encourages political opposition to take the form of civil war. Countries in this condition will not correct themselves. They require the imposition of some kind of external authority. There are those who would insist that an empire is by definition incapable of playing such a role; in their eyes, all empires are exploitative in character. Yet there can be

Great Civil War - 2873329813

"It may be that Confederate nationalism died so abruptly and so completely because it was never a true nationalism, that the fatal split in the confederate psyche prevented the national spirit from ever flowering fully enough to nourish a resolve that would have persevered in the contest after all the romance was gone. All the more tragic was a war fought with so much bloodshed around a flag whose opponents did not really want to pull it down." "If the liberation of African Americans could have been achieved in no way except through war, then the Civil War calls for a rethinking of the attitude toward war that has become widespread, even predominant, in the United States since the Vietnam War: the belief that war is always futile, that its rewards never match its cost, that any conflict that is accepted at all must assuredly be briefly, immediately decisive and virtually without loss of American lives. Neither side would have gone to war in 1861 had there existed then the refusal to accept American risks of death or injury in battle that appears to prevail in the mid-1990s. Neither side would have gone to war had there existed the current insistence that America must never fight unless it is certain of victory beforehand." "Which does not imply that our generation is so much wiser or more civilised than the generation that initiated the Great War of 1861-1865 for the destiny of America. To balance the loss in war of over 400,000 largely white American lives against the gain of freedom for nearly 4 million slaves requires a higher than human capacity to weigh conflicting values. Still, the liberating of so many, and of their descendants, along with the preservation of the American experiment in democracy, may well appear to our rough human calculations as gains not falling short after all of justification for the terrible price of the Civil War." -- Russell F. Weigley A Great Civil War is a major new interpretation of the events which continue to dominate the American imagination and identity nearly 150 years after the war's end. Our Civil War. The Civil War. "A great Civil War," as Lincoln phrased it in the Gettysburg Address. In personal as well as historical terms, more even than the war for independence, the Civil War has been the defining experience of the American democracy. No one knows more about warfare, ancient and modern, than Russell Weigley. A lifelong student of both strategy and tactics, he also brings to his accounts a deep understanding of the importance of individuals from generals to captains to privates. He can put the reader on the battlefield as well as anyone who has ever written about war, and he does it countless times in A Great Civil War. From Fort Sumter to the early ill-organised clashes in the West and border states to the naval encounters in the East and on through the great and horrible battles whose names resound in American history--Shiloh, Corinth, Bull Run, Gettysburg, Vicksburg, Chickamauga, Antietam, Wilderness, Cold Harbor, Petersburg, Appomattox--all the great battles and many lesser engagements are described and analysed. A brilliant narrator of battle action and historical events, Weigley is never content merely to tell a good story. Every student of war will find new insights and interpretations at the strategic and the tactical level. There are firm judgements throughout of the leaders on both sides of the conflict. A Great Civil War also analyses the politics of both sides in relationship to battlefield situations. Weigley is unique in his ability to put all of the pieces on the board at once the reader understands as never before how war and politics (and individuals) interacted to produce the infinitely complex story which is the Civil War. As with any major work, there are themes and subtexts, explicit and implicit: Both sides began the war with strategic and tactical concepts based on Napoleon which were already obsolete because of changes in technology--and both sides struggled throughout the war to develop new strategic and tactical procedures. The Civil War was great not only in the massiveness of the slaughter and destruction. It was, for all its horror, a war about values--democracy and the freeing of the slaves--that was worth the effort. The South, despite its powerful defence, was ultimately ambivalent about leaving the Union and gave up more easily than might have been expected. Finally, there is an intimacy, a sense of personal urgency, in Weigley's grand account. He is connected by blood as well as profession. Jacob Weigley, the author's great grandfather, visited Gettysburg soon after the battle and wrote about it to his brother Francis, who was serving with the 7th Pennsylvania Cavalry Francis later died in a Confederate prison camp. Then and now the Weigleys live in Pennsylvania, and the war and its lessons remain part of the family's living memory, as it is also the nation's.

Free speech is being threatened, not by jackbooted censorship but by a creeping culture of conformism. This is a call to gird up our loins and laptops to fight the new free speech wars. Do we really need to worry about free speech in the West these days? After all, while the Internet might be censored in China and "blasphemers" can be executed in Islamist states, here everybody in public life insists that they now support free speech. And yet...Scratch the surface and it becomes clear that many support not so much free speech as speech on parole, released on licence with a promise of good behaviour, preferably wearing a security ankle bracelet to stop it straying from the straight and narrow. Lobbies demanding tighter regulation for the UK press try to differentiate between what they deem the respectable, serious press and the vulgar, irascible tabloids. Twitter has become the scene of "twitch hunts" where online mobs hunt down trolls and others who step outside the accepted conventions of online opinion. Football fans are nicked for a "racially-motivated public order offence" after calling a famously fat and Scottish manager a "fat Scottish w****r". In today's context, these all become coded ways to insist that there is too much freedom of expression in our society. And yet without freedom of expression, no other liberties would be possible. Against the background of the historic fight for free speech, this book identifies the unique challenges facing freedom of expression today and spells out how unfettered freedom of expression, despite the pain and the problems it entails, is the most important liberty of all.

"That's good enough." We all say it to ourselves and others when dealing with a project. Buy why? Why settle when we know "good enough" rarely is? A greater question is why settle for a good enough life when a GREAT LIFE is obtainable? In The Best Things In Life J. R. Miller addresses the Best Things and the path that can lead us to a truly great life. "He who is satisfied with himself and with his attainments is not living worthily. A wholesome life ever sees better things yet to be reached. It is true, as Browning says, When the fight begins within himself, A man's worth something." Being good is not enough; striving to be better is not the loftiest aim. Nothing less than the best should ever satisfy an immortal being." J.R.M. James Russell Miller was a popular Christian author, Editorial Superintendent of the Presbyterian Board of Publication, and pastor of several churches in Pennsylvania and Illinois. He was the General field Agent for the United States Christian Commission, an organization established by the Young Men's Christian Association after the First Battle of Bull Run. Miller authored nearly 100 books and articles.

Hannah stands at the edge of the sheer bluff, facing a terrible and deadly creature that not only threatens to destroy all that she loves but, unless stopped now, will unleash upon the world an evil it has never known. She is not alone, though. At her side stands an army of fairies, pixies, gnomes, and the mystical, well-mannered wood sprite guardian of Ponca State Park. Hannah knows that even with these loyal allies, her chances of saving her father are slim, but with a nod of her head, she gives the signal and the battle begins. Join Hannah in this thrilling, inspirational, and thoughtful tale of a young girl's struggle with juvenile-onset diabetes as she discovers that being different isn't always bad and that wisdom is sometimes found in the most unlikely of places. Blane Brummond lives in Ponca, Nebraska, with his wife and five children. Blane grew up in South Dakota across the mile-wide Missouri River from Ponca State Park, where he spent many sunny summer afternoons gazing at the bluffs on the far shore, imagining what secrets the dark and beautiful wood held. After he was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes at the age of twenty-five, Blane was faced with the choices faced by thousands of young people every year: whether to and how hard to fight the disease. As a veteran of the elite US Army Airborne Rangers, surrender was not an option. He would fight. Blane pushed forward, graduating from college and then law school. He participated in a host of physically demanding activities such as college wrestling, skydiving, mountain biking, Kung Fu, and one professional MMA cage match. He enjoys studying Christian apologetics, writing music, and hosting an annual fairy hunt that has attracted seekers from as far away as Chicago. Hannah is Blane's debut novella. The book grew out of the tales he'd been telling his four girls of a beautiful wood sprite he'd met who had a fondness for mushrooms and good manners. On one occasion, the wood sprite had actually given him a map of one of her mushroom farms and her permission to harvest her crop. The map was followed, the mushrooms were found, and sweet memories were sewn into the minds of all. The book was also born of the author's desire to give hope, support, and encouragement to the thousands of children diagnosed with juvenile diabetes every year-13,000 in the United States alone-and understanding to those touched by the disease through friends or relatives. Tragically, the disease is usually diagnosed at an age when the child's self-image is still forming and when fitting in is more important than just about anything else. Hannah is Blane's attempt to show these children, or any other child who doesn't fit the norm, that being kind is better than being popular, that physical strength is no match for strength of character, and that a person's value has absolutely nothing to do with what classmates think of them.

Excerpt from Proceedings of the National Conference on Labor Problems Under War Conditions: Under the Joint Auspices of the Society of Industrial Engineers and the Western Efficiency Society, Held at Hotel La Salle, Chicago, March 27, 28, 29, 1918 Mr. F. A. Carlisle, President Western Efficiency Society, Chairman. The meeting was called to order at two o'clock. The Chairman: As is customary with the meetings of the Western Efficiency Society, we will first join in singing the Star Spangled Banner, after which the Rev. Alfred F. Waldo, of Riverside, will deliver the invocation. The assembly joined in singing the Star Spangled Banner, after which the following prayer was offered by Rev. Alfred F. Waldo: "Let us pray. This, our Heavenly Father, is Holy Week, and yet we know that no good work is too secular to be done in this week, and we rejoice and find encouragement and are grateful to Thee for the line intelligence and the splendid enthusiasm with which the minds of these men and women set themselves to work for the solution of the problems of humanity. We perceive in the coincidence between the Holy Weeks, the Holy Week of old when Jesus Christ laid down his life for the redemption of the world on the cross of Calvary and this week when our brave men and boys in the spirit of the same Christ are laying down their lives freely on that western front, we perceive in this a coincidence which is suggestive and stimulating. "We realize that we are living not only in a time but in a week and possibly on a day than which no other day aside from the one upon which Christ died has been more fateful in human history, more freighted, perhaps, with destiny for the future interests of mankind. And we pray that whereas that one of old who betrayed Christ did have the good sense afterwards to go out and hang himself, this traitor by which civilization is betrayed today, instead of terminating his own meaningless and woeful existence utilizes his energies for the murder of others; for him we pray to God that his erroneous and wicked plots may be confuted, and that Thou wilt send a divine power into the minds of the rulers of all of our nations that are associated for the vanquishment of autocracy and evil, into tho minds of our rulers, our generals, our officers, Thou Lord send wisdom that they may plan boldly and wisely and effectively. "And we pray for the men who fight that through faith in Thee they may become conscious of a physical and moral and spiritual strength which is not their own and yet which becomes their own because they receive it and utilize it.
