Soul Survivors - Stories of Women and Children in Cambodia Wild Iris Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Soul Survivors gives voice to women and children in Cambodia who survived the genocide (1975 - 1979), when nearly two million people died from execution, starvation, or disease. Through their detailed personal stories, fourteen people reveal the brutality of Pol Pot's regime, how they managed to survive, and what it took to rebuild their lives afterward. Although the survivors lives are fraught with suffering and times of despair, there is an under current of hope, courage, and resilience that comforts and inspires. Their stories are a testimony to the strength and goodness of the human spirit. Twelve of the fourteen survivors who tell their stories in Soul Survivors stayed in Cambodia after the genocide and worked against the odds to bring their family fragments back together and reclaim their culture. The fascinating details about life and traditions in Cambodia are revealed through their tales as the survivors come from a wide variety of backgrounds, including a medical doctor, classical dancer, landmine survivor, Buddhist nun, Muslim fisherwoman, Christian farmer, orphan, high school teacher, prostitute, silk weaver, social worker, and women's leader. Two survivors came to the United States of America as orphans, graduated from college, and returned to Cambodia as young adults to help rebuild their country. Sixty-four captivating photographs draw the reader into contemporary Cambodia to witness the survivors' courageous work to recover from three decades of war, genocide and poverty. Soul Survivors creates a comprehensive picture of Cambodia yesterday and today. In addition to the survivors stories, there are chapters on how the Khmer Rouge came to power, the role of the US, the landmine situation, the Buddhist peace movement, and how to help people in Cambodia. It includes a chronology of Cambodian history, a map of Cambodia, and an index. This second edition of Soul Survivors was published as Cambodia's genocide trial began in 2008. The perpetrators, top leaders of the Khmer Rouge regime, are being held accountable for mass murder and crimes against humanity 30 years after the tragedy. This new edition is updated and contains recent historical events and an epilog telling what happened to the survivors since the first edition was published in 2002. It also includes information about the two charitable humanitarian organizations the author and photographer were inspired to create to help the poor in Cambodia. "The book effectively demonstrates the political, economic, and psychological links between the destruction of Cambodian society carried out in the 1970s and the suffering experienced by so many Cambodians today," stated Susan Cook, Director of the Cambodian Genocide Program at Yale University. "These are stories that have to be told, that have to be held up to the light of humanity. For the sorrows of Cambodia have not ended. They have been repeated in greater or lesser forms in Rwanda and Bosnia, in Colombia, and continue even now in our history. Hatred never ceases by hatred but by love alone is healed," stated Jack Kornfield, a Buddhist teacher who worked in the Cambodian refugee camps.

Women were at the forefront of the civil rights struggle, but their individual stories were rarely heard. Only recently have historians begun to recognize the central role women played in the battle for racial equality. In Sisters in the Struggle, we hear about the unsung heroes of the civil rights movements such as Ella Baker, who helped found the Student Non-Violent Coordinating Committee, Fannie Lou Hamer, a sharecropper who took on segregation in the Democratic party (and won), and Septima Clark, who created a network of "Citizenship Schools" to teach poor Black men and women to read and write and help them to register to vote. We learn of Black women's activism in the Black Panther Party where they fought the police, as well as the entrenched male leadership, and the Southern Christian Leadership Conference, where the behind-the-scenes work of women kept the organization afloat when it was under siege. It also includes first-person testimonials from the women who made headlines with their courageous resistance to segregation - Rosa Parks, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, and Dorothy Height. This collection represents the coming of age of African-American women's history and presents new stories that point the way to future study. Contributors: Bettye Collier-Thomas, Vicki Crawford, Cynthia Griggs Fleming, V. P. Franklin, Charlayne Hunter-Gault, Farah Jasmine Griffin, Duchess Harris, Sharon Harley, Dorothy I. Height, Chana Kai Lee, Tracye Matthews, Genna Rae McNeil, Rosa Parks, Barbara Ransby, Jacqueline A. Rouse, Elaine Moore Smith, and Linda Faye Williams.

The Kingdom of God is built by the hands and hearts of Gospel Champions. These devotionals are focused on the faithful and courageous men and women who answer God's call on their lives. Often the least recognized, these Christian servants are the hands, feet and face of God's present-day Kingdom. Some of the devotions encourage servants to answer His call, then prepare for their mission tasks. Other devotionals address working with others on the frontlines of the Gospel mission. There are devotionals related to finishing in continuing strength and steady faith. Some devotions include Scriptural medicine and reassurance for those who stumble while serving. The servants who bless others are often more blessed than they know. These teachings help Gospel champions recognize and use the gifts God has already given to them. This book benefits the men and women who deliver God's answers to the physical and spiritual needs around them.

Description: The arrival of three Sisters of St. Mary of Namur at the railroad station of Waco, Texas, on September 23, 1873, brought remarkable change to the state of education in the center and north of the state. Hoping ""to do a little good"" by living their faith and establishing Catholic schools, Mother Emilie, Sister Mary Angela, and Sister Stanislaus were somewhat appalled to learn that Waco boasted only twenty-five Catholic families, and among them were only six school-age children. But Protestants too appreciated the education that was offered. Other sisters came, and in less than forty years Waco, Corsicana, Ennis, Denison, Sherman, Wichita Falls, Fort Worth, and Dallas boasted flourishing Catholic establishments. Boarding schools offered girls in rural areas as well as towns an opportunity for education. Who were those sisters? Where did they come from, what did they find, and why did they stay? That story, sometimes humorous, sometimes tragic, always challenging, is the subject of this book. Endorsements: ""Sister St. John weaves . . . written history and living history of the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur into one portrait of the love of God in Christ. I am very happy and grateful to have the chance to introduce this work, and to thank Sister St. John and all of the Sisters of St. Mary of Namur for the witness of religious life . . . and for their personal kindness, support, and prayers."" --Kevin W. Vann Bishop of Fort Worth ""What joy to see the completion of Sr. St. John's A Little Good. It presents a lively and tender testimony of our Congregation's mission. Filled with touching stories of courageous women who gave their all to advance Catholic education and Christian values in the Southwest, it is a true reflection of the graced history of our charism, as Sisters of St. Mary, lived to its fullest."" --Sister Réjeanne Roussel General Superior of the Sisters of St. Mary About the Contributor(s): Sister St. John Begnaud, SSMN, was brought up in the Waco school, and has been a Sister of St. Mary for sixty-nine years. She has served in the Congregation's Motherhouse in Belgium as well as in schools established by the sisters in Texas, California, Congo, Rwanda, and Cameroon.
