Gospel of Philip Inner Traditions Bear and Company
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
The mainstream position of the Christian church on sexuality was perhaps best summed up by Pope Innocent III (1160-1216) when he stated that the sexual act is so shameful that it is intrinsically evil. Another Christian theologian maintained that the holy Ghost is absent from the room shared by a wedded couple. What Philip records in his gospel is that Christ said exactly the opposite: the nuptial chamber is in fact the holy of holies. For Philip the Holy Trinity includes the feminine presence. God is the father, the Holy Ghost is the Mother and Jesus is the son. Neither man nor woman alone is created in the image of God. It is only in their relationship with one another - the sacred embrace in which they share divine breath - that they resemble God. The Gospel of Philip is best known for its portrayal of the physical relationship shared by Jesus and his most beloved disciple Mary of Magdala. Because it ran counter to the direction of the Church which condemned the works of the flesh, Philip's gospel was suppressed and lost until rediscovered at Nag Hammadi in 1947. Orthodox theologian Jean-Yves Leloup's translation from the Coptic and his analysis of this gospel are presented here for the first time in English. What emerges from this important source text is a restoration of the sacred initiatic union between the male and female principles that was once at the heart of Christianity's sacred mystery.

Does God Love Everyone? Cascade Books
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Does God truly love all persons? Most Christians think the obvious answer to this question is, ""Yes, of course he does!"" Indeed, many Christians would agree that the very heart of the gospel is that God so loved the whole world that he gave his Son to make salvation available for every single person. This book shows that one of the most popular and resurgent theological movements in the contemporary evangelical church--namely, Calvinism--cannot coherently and consistently affirm this vital claim about the love of God. While some Calvinists forthrightly deny that God loves everyone, more commonly Calvinists attempt to affirm the love of God for all persons in terms that are compatible with their doctrines that Christ died only for the elect--those persons God has unconditionally chosen to save. This book shows that the Calvinist attempts to affirm God's love for all persons are fraught with severe philosophical and theological difficulties. Calvinism, then, should be rejected in favor a theology that can forthrightly and consistently affirm the love of God for all persons. Nothing less is at stake than the very heart of the gospel. Option 1: ""In his defense of God's sincere love for everyone, Jerry Walls provides a biblically robust and logically astute perspective. He rightly argues that 'this issue is not simply an academic question to be debated by scholars . . . what is at stake is the very nature of the gospel we preach.'"" Option 2: ""Do not be misled, this book is not really about John Calvin. Nor is it even about the TULIP systematic that bares his name. Rather, it is primarily about the person, character, and love of our graciously good God. In that regard, Jerry Walls has produced a work that will serve the church for generations to come."" Option 3: ""Walls gets to heart of the matter when he asks, 'What does it say about a theological system if many of those who believe it doubt whether God loves unbelievers? Do we have good news for everyone? Is there a message of hope for all persons? Can we honestly preach to all unbelievers that God loves them?' Calvinism, applied logically, cannot answer these questions in a way that is consistent with the scriptures."" --Leighton Flowers, Director of Youth Evangelism for Texas Baptists ""The movement loosely known as Calvinism has emerged as a vibrant and powerful force within evangelical Protestantism. Jerry Walls, in turn, has emerged as the most forceful and rigorous critic of Calvinism. In this short and readable book, he puts his theological knowledge and philosophical acumen to work in making a biblical and logical case that Calvinism is beset with real difficulties. Does God Love Everyone? raises some sharp challenges that deserve serious engagement."" --Tom McCall, Professor of Biblical and Systematic Theology, Trinity Evangelical Divinity School ""Arguably the greatest service this volume offers is a solid response to the busy ministry leader who is asking, 'So, what's the big fuss over Calvinism?' Does God Love Everyone? provides understandable answers to that contemporary question. Those Christian faith traditions, who have historically embraced a vibrant evangelistic effort, will appreciate the clear observations Walls provides for keeping their commitment to effectively reach 'all the people,' with the gospel, on sturdy theological ground."" --Byron D. Klaus, Former President, Assemblies of God Theological Seminary ""Walls demonstrates biblically and philosophically the 'heart of what's wrong with Calvinism' while maintaining an irenic spirit. Everyone concerned about truth, evangelism, and the honor of God ought to read this book, especially if they are not yet settled in their mind about the Calvinist 'doctrines of grace.'""

Sophia spoke: "I entered into the midst of the cage which is the prison of the body. And I spoke saying: 'He who hears, let him awake from his deep sleep.' Then Adam wept and shed tears. After he wiped away his bitter tears he asked: 'Who called my name, and from where has this hope arose in me even while I am in the chains of this prison?' And I (Sophia) answered: 'I am the one who carries the pure light; I am the thought of the undefiled spirit. Arise, remember, and follow your origin, which is I, and beware of the deep sleep.'" Sophia would come to be considered a force or conduit of the Holy Spirit, in part due to the fact that the Holy Spirit was also considered a feminine and creative force from the Supreme God. The Gospel of Philip echoes this theology in verse six as follows: In the days when we were Hebrews we were made orphans, having only our Mother. Yet when we believed in the Messiah (and became the ones of Christ), the Mother and Father both came to us. Gospel of Philip. As the emerging orthodox church became more and more oppressive to women, later even labeling them "occasions of sin," the Gnostics countered by raising women to equal status with men, saying Sophia was, in a sense, the handmaiden or wife of the Supreme God, making the soul of Adam her spiritual offspring. Jesus said: If those who lead you say to you: Look, the Kingdom is in the sky, then the birds of the sky would enter before you. If they say to you: It is in the sea, then the fish of the sea would enter ahead you. But the Kingdom of God exists within you and it exists outside of you. Those who come to know (recognize) themselves will find it, and when you come to know yourselves you will become known and you will realize that you are the children of the Living Father. Yet if you do not come to know yourselves then you will dwell in poverty and it will be you who are that poverty.

Works of Mercy - Andrzej Zwoliński
Książki & Multimedia > Książki
Opis - The Jubilee Year of Mercy, announced by Pope Francis, is a great time for our common reflection on how we live our Christian lives in the special context of the Works of Mercy. This call to the Works of Mercy can be properly understood not only as charity in terms of material deeds and works, but more deeply in the spiritual sense of the Works of Mercy, especially in the different aspects of education and spiritual growth as expressed in the Catechism of the Catholic Church as the Spiritual Works of Mercy. Every step of any Work of Mercy reminds us that God is first rich in mercy. It should be our response to the call of the Gospel to follow our Lord Jesus Christ and imitate Him in His great Works of Mercy, both Corporal and Spiritual. Arthur W. Pink Collection Vol 2 Bottom of the Hill Publishing
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Arthur W. Pink Collection Vol 2 includes three Arthur Pink classics; Comfort for Christians, The Beatitudes, and Regeneration or The New Birth. "The work unto which the servant of Christ is called is many-sided. Not only is he to preach the Gospel to the unsaved, to feed God's people with knowledge and understanding (Jer. 3:15), and to take up the stumbling stone out of their way (Isa. 57:14), but he is also charged to "cry aloud, spare not, lift up thy voice like a trumpet, and show My people their transgression" (Isa. 58:1 and cf. 1 Tim. 4:2). While another important part of his commission is stated in, "Comfort ye, My people, said your God" (Isa. 40:1). "What an honorable title, "My people!" What an assuring relationship: "your God!" What a pleasant task: "comfort ye My people!" A threefold reason may be suggested for the duplicating of the charge. First, because sometimes the souls of believers refuse to be comforted (Ps. 77:2), and the consolation needs to be repeated. Second, to press this duty the more emphatically upon the preacher's heart, that he need not be sparing in administering cheer. Third, to assure us how heartily desirous God himself is that His people should be of good cheer (Phil. 4:4)." "Opinion has been much divided concerning the design, scope, and application of the Sermon on the Mount. Most commentators have seen in it an exposition of Christian ethics. Men such as the late Count Tolstoi have regarded it as the setting forth of a "golden rule" for all men to live by. Others have dwelt upon its dispensational bearings, insisting that it belongs not to the saints of the present dispensation but to believers within a future millennium. Two inspired statements, however, reveal its true scope. In Matthew 5:1, 2, we learn that Christ was here teaching His disciples. From Matthew 7:28, 29, it is clear that He was also addressing a great multitude of the people. Thus it is evident that this address of our Lord contains instruction both for believers and unbelievers alike." Two chief obstacles lie in the way of the salvation of any of Adam's fallen descendants: bondage to the guilt and penalty of sin, bondage to the power and presence of sin; or, in other words, their being bound for Hell and their being unfit for Heaven. These obstacles are, so far as man is concerned, entirely insurmountable. This fact was unequivocally established by Christ, when, in answer to His disciples' question, "Who then can be saved?", He answered, "with men this is impossible." A lost sinner might more easily create a world than save his own soul. But (forever be His name praised), the Lord Jesus went on to say, "with God all things are possible" (Matt. 19:25, 26). Arthur Walkington Pink was an English Christian evangelist and Biblical scholar. Born to Christian parents, prior to conversion he migrated into a Theosophical society and quickly rose in prominence. His conversion came from his father's patient admonitions from Scripture. It was Proverbs 14:12, 'there is a way which seemeth right unto a man, but the end thereof are the ways of death,' which particularly struck his heart and compelled him to renounce Theosophy and follow Jesus.

Poetic Theology William B Eerdmans Publishing Co
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
What are the poetics of everyday life? What can they teach us about God? Art, music, dance, and writing can certainly be poetic, but so can such diverse pastimes as fishing, skiing, or attending sports events. Any and all activities that satisfy our fundamental need for play, for celebration, and for ritual, says William Dyrness, are inherently poetic and in Poetic Theology he demonstrates that all such activities are places where God is active in the world. All of humanitys creative efforts, Dyrness points out, testify to our intrinsic longing for joy and delight and our deep desire to connect with others, with the created order, and especially with the Creator. This desire is rooted in the presence and calling of God in and through the good creation. With extensive reflection on aesthetics in spirituality, worship, and community development, Dyrnesss Poetic Theology will be useful for all who seek fresh and powerful new ways to communicate the gospel in contemporary society. William Dyrnesss bold invitation to a poetic theology shaped by Scripture, tradition, and imagination one luring us toward a fuller participation in beauty than argument or concept alone allow reminds us that truth itself is beautiful to behold and poetic to the core. . . . If poetry is in its deepest reflex an intensification of life, then Dyrnesss call for a poetic theology is one we ignore at our peril, reminding us that faithful living is not only about proper thinking but also and, perhaps, more properly about the texture of our living and the quality of our loving. Mark S. Burrows Andover Newton Theological School Makes a strong case for aesthetics as one of the avenues used by God to draw human beings near to him and his glory. . . . A wonderful journey through Reformed spirituality and a wake-up call for Reformed theology. Cornelius van der Kooi Free University, Amsterdam

Early Arianism SCM PRESS
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Arianism is the archetypal Christian heresy. It was not only a watershed historically; its central issue-the question of Christ's full co-equal divinity as Son of God-remains an issue of deep concern to every generation of Christians, including our own. The traditional critique of Arianism is that its errors arise from an over-intellectual approach to Christianity, that it failed because it lacked a gospel of salvation. Questions about that traditional view have been raised here and there in recent years. This book challenges it head on. It does no on a basis of careful scholarship, and at the same time in a lively and readable style.' Maurice Wiles, Regius Professor of Divinity in the University of Oxford 'Gregg and Groh have enabled us to see the thought of Arius on the nature of Christ as condensing nothing less than a distinctive view of man, congruent to a precise social and religious milieu. As a result, the clash of disembodied dogmas becomes suffused with the quality of a late Roman Christian's most urgent concerns: "love and betrayal, grace and backsliding". Now presented with liberating precision in all its implications-from conflicting attitudes to change and stability in society and the universe, to vivid glimpses of the bustling world of Greek cities contrasted with the unearthly stillness of St Anthony in the desert-a well-worn chapter of Christian dogma emerges as a high moment in the birth of a new civilization in the Roman world. This is a model book, that any scholar of Christian doctrine would dearly wish to have written; and that every scholar of the early Christian world must read.' Peter Brown, Professor of History and Classics in the University of California at Berkeley 'Gregg and Groh propose a novel approach to the most profound crisis of the dogmatic tradition in the ancient church. They extract from the denunciation of the errors of Arius ...a striking view of the ancient doctrine of salvation. The principle aspects of this doctrine remain too often neglected by the critics. But with Gregg and Groh the saviour God of Arius is brought back to life, reactivated ...The authors display in convincing fashion the original accents of this doctrine, at the heart of the Christian community, before it had become nothing but a heresy charged doctrine. ..They promote a healthy reflection on the more fixed forms of antiArian dogmatism, passively transmitted over the centuries.' Hard to Believe Thomas Nelson Publishers
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Jesus Christ did not die on the cross so you and I could have a nice day. Ministers and teachers who water down the gospel of Christ in order to make it more popular and appealing may be leading their fun-loving audiences down the road to eternal punishment. This book is John MacArthur's unflinching, unapologetic treatise on the modern tendency to alter the true message of Christianity in order to meet the whims and desires of a culture hoping for nonconfrontational messages, easy answers, and superficial commitments. Too many people just want a Madison Avenue Jesus to make them well, make them happy, and make them prosperous. But Jesus Christ isn't a personal genie. He is the Savior. He died in agony to satisfy the wrath of a holy God and to forgive the sins of humankind. Faith in Him demands a willingness to make any sacrifice He asks. The hard truth about Christianity is that the cost is high, but the rewards are priceless: abundant and eternal life that comes only from faithfully follwing Christ.
