On Murder Considered as One of the Fine Arts Penguin Books
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
'People begin to see that something more goes to the composition of a fine murder than two blockheads to kill and be killed - a knife - a purse - and a dark lane...' In this provocative and blackly funny essay, Thomas de Quincey considers murder in a purely aesthetic light and explains how practically every philosopher over the past two hundred years has been murdered - 'insomuch, that if a man calls himself a philosopher, and never had his life attempted, rest assured there is nothing in him'. Introducing Little Black Classics: 80 books for Penguin's 80th birthday. Little Black Classics celebrate the huge range and diversity of Penguin Classics, with books from around the world and across many centuries. They take us from a balloon ride over Victorian London to a garden of blossom in Japan, from Tierra del Fuego to 16th-century California and the Russian steppe. Here are stories lyrical and savage; poems epic and intimate; essays satirical and inspirational; and ideas that have shaped the lives of millions. Thomas de Quincey (1785-1859). Thomas de Quincey's Confessions and an English Opium-Eater and Other Writings is available in Penguin Classics.

Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Jill Breck was just doing her job as a river guide when she saved the life of Lane Faroe, son of two of St. Kilda Consulting's premier operators. But when a string of ominous events--including a mysterious fire that kills her great-aunt and a furor in the Western art world raised by a dozen Breck family paintings--culminates in a threat to her life, Jill reluctantly calls in a favor. Zach Balfour works part-time as a consultant for St. Kilda. His expertise is gathering and analyzing information from unlikely and often dangerous sources. Though he's got the skills to be a highly effective bodyguard, being a bullet catcher isn't his preferred way to spend time. Protecting Jill will take him into familiar territory--among a strange, savagely competitive bunch of collectors who'll do anything to stay at the top. But Jill is in deeper waters than she's ever known; as she soon discovers, the perils of running wild rivers are tame compared with the hidden dangers in the high-stakes game of art collecting. From the cozy rooms of the Breck homestead cabin to the cold multimillion-dollar galleries of the Western art circuit, Zach and Jill must race against time to unmask a ruthless killer hidden in a blue smoke of money, threats, lies, and death. . . .

Tale of Two Murders Duke University Press
Prawo, akty prawne
As scandalous as any modern-day celebrity murder trial, the ÂGiroux affair was a maelstrom of intrigue, encompassing daggers, poison, adultery, arch-enemies, servants and royalty, and legal proceedings that reached to the pinnacle of seventeenth-century French society. In 1638, Philippe Giroux, a judge in the highest royal court of Burgundy, allegedly murdered his equally powerful cousin, Pierre Balliet, and Balliet's valet, Philibert Neugot. The murders were all the more shocking because they were surrounded by accusations (particularly that Giroux had been carrying on a passionate affair with Balliet's wife), conspiracy theories (including allegations that Giroux tried to poison his mother-in-law), and unexplained deaths (Giroux's wife and her physician died under suspicious circumstances). The trial lasted from 1639 until 1643 and came to involve many of the most distinguished and influential men in France: among them, Henri II Bourbon, the Prince of CondĂŠ; the Prime Minister, Cardinal Richelieu; and King Louis XIII.James R. Farr reveals the Giroux affair as not only a riveting murder mystery but also an illuminating point of entry into the dynamics of power, justice, and law in seventeenth-century France. Drawing on the voluminous trial records, Farr uses Giroux's experience in the court system to trace the mechanisms of power--both the formal power vested by law in judicial officials and the informal power exerted by the nobility through patron-client relationships. He does not take a position on Giroux's guilt or innocence. Instead, he allows readers to draw their own conclusions about who did what to whom on that ill-fated evening in 1638.James R. Farr is Professor of History at Purdue University. He is the author of Artisans in Europe, 1300Â1914; Authority and Sexuality in Early Modern Burgundy, 1550Â1730 and Hands of Honor: Artisans and Their World in Dijon, 1550Â1650.

The powerful and compelling true story of corruption, coercion and murder surrounding the Tupac Shakur & Christopher "Biggie Smalls" Wallace homicides brought to 2014. With contribution by former Los Angeles Police Detective Russell Poole, the original Wallace homicide investigator, Michael Douglas Carlin, Director of "American Federale" and Richard "RJ" Bond, director of the "Tupac Assassination" movies take you inside the 18 year odyssey of the derailed murder investigations. Tupac 187: The Red Knight" goes back to the beginning of the investigations-the original police files-and re-examines the people and evidence who have been previously corrupted or ignored. We decided to strip the Death Row Records disinformation machine of its fallacies, and re-paint the witness disparagement campaigns by the Los Angeles Times with the color of truth. When all is laid out raw and exposed under the book's harsh light, "187" clearly evidences the power of the media-both of 1996 and of today- to not only report news-but to make it. Moreover, Tupac: "187" exposes leaks in the Los Angeles Police Department that may have fatally crippled the investigations in both cases; covert operations to collect up investigation notes and findings, key credible witness testimony hidden in detective's desk drawers, complaints of Los Angeles Police employees of their work literally disappearing from their computer files-along with their computers-it's all brought to light. Even in the last year, witnesses took new information to four key L.A.P.D. brass, only to see the body of evidence leaked by one of those in the meeting, to end up on the Internet-risking lives and attempting to sabotage the new information. This book is what you get when you combine the work of the LAPD Detective that found justice for Bill Cosby's son and who broke the infamous LAPD Rampart Scandal to the world, the Filmmaker who dared to follow the Mexican Federale that killed drug lord Pablo Acosta and the award-winning filmmaker who produced the classic "Tupac: Assassination" documentary? You get a whole new group of suspects, motives that support a completely new understanding of the Tupac Shakur and Christopher "Biggie Smalls" Wallace homicides ("187" of the title is the California Penal Code section for Murder) that some in the law enforcement community would rather you not know about. Through actual police and court documents never before published, never released recorded phone conversations from 1996, an unearthed 1998 confession letter and all new and never before released witness interviews, Bond and Carlin follow the cold trail of those responsible for the loss of two of the music industries greatest hip-hop legends. Where they lead will stun and shock the senses. Never before has there been a level of detail in these cases that has been made public; Bond and Carlin, with the help of Poole, go back to the very beginning when leads were new and unbiased, and publicly flush out the Death Row Records dis-information machine that turned good witnesses into targets of smear campaigns, and took the lives of countless witnesses and suspects. Prepare to challenge all you thought you knew about both cases, and get ready to learn new information that will forever change the way you view police, the law and the killings of Shakur and Wallace!
