Opis - Pierwsze na świecie świadectwo ofiary zbrodni honorowej. Miała siedemnaście lat i zakochała się: zhańbiła rodzinę. Więc rodzina wydała na nią wyrok śmierci... Pokochała go pierwszą miłością. Myślała, że się z nią ożeni. Ale ukochany zniknął, a ona odkryła, że jest w ciąży. A w jej świecie to najcięższa zbrodnia... Wyrok wydaje jej ojciec. Szwagier dokonuje egzekucji. Oblewa Souad benzyną i podpala... Silver Kings GOLLANCZ

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Praised by the likes of Joe Abercrombie and Brent Weeks, Stephen Deas has made dragons his own. The Silver King, half-god, legend and myth, is returning. Once he fought his brother, the Black Moon, and his dragons, and was defeated. But the Black Moon was also weakened, and a millennia has passed. Humanity has grown used to a world without gods, a world where they were masters of all - including the terrifying dragons. But the dragons have awakened, the hole in reality is expanding, and the shackles that kept the half-gods controlled have been broken. The Black Moon lives on in the body of Berren Crowntaker, and has taken control. With an army behind him, the dragons above and the Dragon Queen at his side, he goes to war with his brother. The worlds are turning, and only one thing is sure - there will be an ending. THE SILVER KING is the triumphant conclusion to one of the most brutal and wide-ranging fantasy series of recent years.

This is my tale and I will leave you to tell whether it be high romance or tragedy.Sixteen-year-old Frances Stuart arrives at the Restoration court to find her innocence and beauty are highly-prized commodities, envied by the women and desired by the men. Before long, King Charles II falls passionately in love with her and will stop at nothing to make her his mistress. But Frances is no conventional court beauty. She is determined to make her own choices in life, and to be with the man she loves. Can she overcome the dangerous pitfalls of the King's obsession, the Queen's jealousy, and the traps set for her by the King's notorious mistresses, and make the life she wants for herself? Set against the drama of the "Great Plague" and "The Fire of London", "The Painted Lady" brings to life the vibrant and decadent court of Charles II and in Frances Stuart discovers a passionate young woman prepared to fight for her own destiny. Praise for Maeve Haran's "The Lady and the Poet": "This is history as pure entertainment, an inventive and delicious feast of passion, wit and intrigue". ("The Times"). "With its fascinating insight into Tudor life, this will absorb you to the end". ("She"). "The clothes, the jewels, the smell of the place are all evoked; and everyone from the Queen herself to the elusive, sexy figure of Donne come wonderfully to life" (A. N. Wilson, "Readers' Digest".)

Although the Seymours arrived with the Normans, it is with Jane, Henry VIII's third queen, her brothers, Edward, Duke of Somerset and Thomas, Lord Seymour of Sudeley, that they became prominent. Jane bore Henry his longed-for son, Edward VI and both her brothers achieved prominence through her. Edward was central to Henry's activities in Scotland and become Lord Protector for the young king, his nephew, a hugely powerful position. Thomas married Henry's sixth wife, Catherine Parr and after her death in 1548 aimed to marry Princess Elizabeth (the future Elizabeth I) with whom he had flirted when she was in Catherine's care and for this he was executed for high treason. Edward fell foul of his fellow councillors and was also executed. Edward's son was restored to the title, Lord Hertford, by Elizabeth I but was sent to the Tower when it emerged that he had secretly married Jane Grey's sister, Catherine, who was Elizabeth's protestant heir. Both her marriage and pregnancy were an affront to the queen. This is the epic rise and fall of the family at the heart of the Tudor court and of Henry VIII's own heart, he described Jane as 'my first true wife' and left express orders to be buried next to her tomb at Windsor Castle. The family seat of Wolfhall or 'Wolf Hall' in Wiltshire is long gone but it lives on as an icon of the Tudor age.

From the winner of the 2004 Whitbread Biography Award and the Marsh Biography Award John Guy, comes Thomas Becket, a lively and enlightening new book that brings a colossal figure of British history vividly to life. This is the man, not the legend...Thomas Becket lived at the centre of medieval England. Son of a draper's merchant, he was befriended and favoured by Henry II and quickly ascended the rungs of power and privilege. He led 700 knights into battle, brokered peace between warring states and advised King and Pope. Yet he lost it all defying his closest friend and King, resulting in his own bloody murder and the birth of a legend. In John Guy's masterful account the life, death and times of Thomas Becket come splendidly alive. "Lively, effortlessly readable, superb. A triumph". (The Times). "Suspenseful, meticulously researched ...however well you think you know the story, it is well worth the read". (Financial Times). "Wonderfully moving and subtle. Reading of the assassination is almost unbearably intense and brings tears to one's eye". (Daily Express). "Compelling, marvellously measured, entertainingly astute, and in places positively moving". (The Independent). "A beautifully layered portrait of one of the most complex characters in English history ...not only corrects many historical errors and uncertainties, but merits reading more than once, for the sheer joy of its superb storytelling". (The Times). "Scintillates with energetic scene-setting, giving us a tactile, visual feel for early medieval England ...breathes new life into an oft-told tale". (Financial Times). "Vivid and extremely readable. The most accessible Life of Thomas Becket to be published in recent years". (The Times Literary Supplement). John Guy is an award-winning historian, accomplished broadcaster and a Fellow of Clare College, Cambridge. His previous books include My Heart is My Own: The Life of Mary Queen of Scots, winner of the 2004 Whitbread Biography Award and the Marsh Biography Award, the highly acclaimed dual biography A Daughter's Love: Thomas and Margaret More and a history, Tudor England, which has sold over 250,000 copies worldwide.

Sixteen, of noble birth and stunningly beautiful, Elizabeth Howard envisions a glorious life for herself as lady-in-waiting to the future queen, Catherine of Aragon. There, she raises golden girl Mary, moody George, and ugly duckling Anne - while staving off boredom with a string of admirers. Until Henry VIII takes the throne ...When Thomas finally brings his highborn wife to London, Elizabeth indulges in lavish diversions and dalliances - and catches the lusty king's eye. But those who enjoy Henry's fickle favor must also guard against his wrath. Closer Magazine 'A rollercoaster tale which gives a new and fascinating perspective on three young women who became hostages to fortune in a perilous and turbulent age.' "Sir, Your Grace's Displeasure and my Imprisonment are Things so strange unto me, as what to Write, or what to Excuse, I am altogether ignorant." Thus opens a burned fragment of a letter dated 6 May 1536 and signed "Anne Boleyn", a letter in which the imprisoned queen fervently proclaims her innocence to her husband, King Henry VIII. This letter "from the Lady in the Tower" has divided historians in recent years, with some dismissing it as a fake. There has been no definitive study of the letter or its mysterious provenance... until now. In Anne Boleyn's Letter from the Tower, Sandra Vasoli provides an in-depth investigation of the individuals who may well have kept the letter safe for nearly 500 years, from author to its present home in the British Library. - Did Anne Boleyn actually compose the letter from the Tower? - Did Henry VIII regret his final tragic actions against Anne Boleyn? Sandra Vasoli unravels the mysteries of this letter and also reveals a startling comment found buried in an age-old document which gives us a cryptic clue into Henry VIII's anguish over his second wife. The culmination of this research may well alter the accepted view of Anne Boleyn and Henry VIII's doomed marriage...

'My empire is of the imagination.' These are the words of Ayesha, the mysterious white queen of a Central African tribe, whose dread title, 'She-who-must-be-obeyed', testifies to her undying beauty and magical powers; but they serve equally well to describe the hold of her author, Henry Rider Haggard, on generations of readers. Writing 'at white heat', and in the flush of success after the publication of King Solomon's Mines, Haggard drew again on his knowledge of Africa and of ancient legends, but also on something deeper and more disturbing. To the Englishmen who journey through shipwreck, fever, and cannibals to her hidden realm, 'She' is the goal of a quest bequeathed to them two thousand years before; to Haggard's readers, 'She' is the embodiment of one of the most potent and ambivalent figures of Western mythology, a female who is both monstrous and desirable - and, without question, deadlier than the male. ABOUT THE SERIES: For over 100 years Oxford World's Classics has made available the widest range of literature from around the globe. Each affordable volume reflects Oxford's commitment to scholarship, providing the most accurate text plus a wealth of other valuable features, including expert introductions by leading authorities, helpful notes to clarify the text, up-to-date bibliographies for further study, and much more.
