Studies in Philosophical Realism in Art, Design and Education - 2893510260

Studies in Philosophical Realism in Art, Design and Education Springer International Publishing AG

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book fills a gap in the literature of 21st century international visual arts education by providing a structured approach to understanding the benefits of Philosophical Realism in art education, an approach that has received little international attention until now. The framework as presented provides a powerful interface between research and practical reconceptualisations of critical issues and practice in the domains of art, design, and education that involve implications for curriculum in visual arts, teaching and learning, cognitive development, and creativity. The book extends understanding of Philosophical Realism in its practical application to teaching practice in visual arts in the way it relates to the fields of art, design, and education. Researchers, teacher educators and specialist art teachers are informed about how Philosophical Realism provides insights into art, design, and education. These insights vary from clearer knowledge about art to the examination of beliefs and assumptions about the art object. Readers learn how cognitive reflection, and social and practical reasoning in the classroom help cultivate students' artistic performances, and understand how constraints function in students' reasoning at different ages/stages of education.

According to UNESCO (1994) the child with special educational needs is entitled to regular access, full education and curriculum adaptation. In Ireland, since the introduction of the Education Act (1998) and the EPSEN Act (2004) there has been a significant shift in government policy towards the creation of inclusive learning environments for a diverse society. This book addresses the significant challenges for both art teacher and art student with special educational needs in mainstream post-primary education. The approach to the research taken was qualitative in nature with certain aspects of quantitative study. From the analysis, three key recurring topics emerged which allowed the author to discuss the findings in thematic form. Visual art education and inclusive practice in mainstream post primary schools; sufficient access to art education for all: and the identity of the disabled student in relation to the curriculum. This book should be especially useful to teachers and student teachers of art craft and design. It should also be helpful to special educational needs assistants and to parents of children with disabilities.

Catholic View of Education in the United States Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from A Catholic View of Education in the United States: A Paper We approach with diffidence a subject so often discussed by the ablest debaters in our Legislature, and so often elaborately treated by the most gifted writers, Catholic and non-Catholic, to be found in the country. Indeed, in a Catholic point of view, we may well say that the subject has been exhausted, and that, with a logical precision, lucidity of arguments, and force of illustration sufficient to satisfy any but the most determined enemies of freedom of education. Scarcely an original feature of interest can be introduced in an essay on the subject; the most one can now aim at is to give the essence of the arguments on the more salient points, solely for the purpose of impressing on public opinion the justice of Catholic claims to consideration. Those claims are now cordially endorsed by nearly seven millions of the citizens of this Republic. Not one quarter of one per-cent could be found among the Catholic body at present in the United States to deny the necessity of religious, denominational education. Not more than a decade ago, there were not a few among the Catholic body who gave no support to separate Christian education. Their refusal to recognize and patronize schools in which Catholic dogma was taught and the principles of Catholic morality enforced, was dictated by reasons which experience showed them to be as false as they were unjust. Comparatively wealthy Catholics did not wish to be regarded as the patrons of schools in which the children of the poor and helpless were educated, even though their teachers were men and women who had sacrificed every worldly enjoyment, to do the noblest and most practically benevolent work that the true disciples of Christ could select. Benjamin Rush and His Services, to American Education (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Benjamin Rush and His Services, to American Education More than one hundred years have passed since the death of Doctor Benjamin Rush and yet nothing that purports to be a complete biography of him has been published. There are many short sketches, one copied from the other in many cases, and several valuable eulogies. Better than any of these is the "Memorial, Written by Himself", which was privately published "for the benefit of his descendants" several years ago. A man who had so large a share in the work of his city and the councils of his nation and the life of his times deserves better of posterity. The life of a physician should be written by a brother physician and Dr. S. Weir Mitchell was much interested in Dr. Rush and collected and published some material. It will always be regretted that among the many labors of his life he did not find time also to complete this one. But if no physician will take time to write a biography of Rush, then a layman may be pardoned for doing so, if he can approach the subject on what may be called Dr. Rush's second level of interests. his interest in education and social reform. Cartographies of becoming in education: A Deleuze-Guattari Perspective proposes a non-hierarchical approach that maps teaching and learning with the power of affect and what a body can do/become in different educational contexts. Teaching and learning is an encounter with the unknown and happen as specific responses to particular problems encountered with/in life. In this edited volume, international scholars map out potential ruptures in teaching and learning in order to conceptualize education differently. One way is through the multidisciplinary lens of MLT (Multiple Literacies Theory) in which reading is intensive and immanent. The authors deploy different aspects of MLT while creating and experimenting with ethology, teaching, learning, curriculum, teacher education and technology in relation to visual arts, music, mathematics, theatre, workplace literacy, second language education, and architecture. With the forces of globalization, digital media and economic re-structuring reconfiguring the social, political and economic landscape, societies require innovative ways of thinking about education. Cartographies of becoming in education: A Deleuze-Guattari Perspective is a response to problems posed by such forces. The problematic surrounding Deleuze-Guattari and education continues to grow. Diana Masny's scholarship in this area is well known and appreciated through her many essays and books that develop MLT (Multiple Literacies Theory). Cartographies of Becoming in Education: A Deleuze-Guattari Perspective continues her effort to broaden the notion of education and show its intersections with MLT. The series of essays do this by forming a number of 'entries,' five to be precise: politicizing education, affect and education, literacies and becoming, teacher-becomings, and deterritorializing boundaries. Each 'entry' explores the way an MLT inflected orientation enables us to further grasp the creative inventiveness of the Deleuze-Guattarian tool kit that can be applied to areas of music education, ethnography, art, drama, literacy, mathematics, landscape ecology, ethology and teacher education. It is a vivid illustration of the cartography that maps the rhizomatic movements that are taking place by international scholars who are deterritorializing education as a discipline of modernity. I highly recommend this collection of essays to those of us who are continually asking how might education be rethought through the unthought. It opens up new territories. - Jan Jagodzinski, University of Alberta, Author of Psychoanalyzing Cinema.

Oxford Handbook of Deaf Studies, Language, and Education, Vol. 2 Oxford University Press Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Oxford Handbooks offer authoritative and up-to-date reviews of original research in a particular subject area. Specially commissioned chapters from leading figures in the discipline give critical examinations of the progress and direction of debates, as well as a foundation for future research. Oxford Handbooks provide scholars and graduate students with compelling new perspectives upon a wide range of subjects in the humanities, social sciences, and sciences. The adage "Those who do not learn from history are doomed to repeat it" is a powerful one for parents, teachers, and other professionals involved with or interested in deaf individuals or the Deaf community. Myths grown from ignorance have long dogged the field, and faulty assumptions and overgeneralizations have persisted despite contrary evidence. A study of the history of deaf education reveals patterns that have affected educational policy and legislation for deaf people around the world; these patterns are related to several themes critical to the chapters of this volume. One such theme is the importance of parental involvement in raising and educating deaf children. Another relates to how Deaf people have taken an increasingly greater role in influencing their own futures and places in society. In published histories, we see the longstanding conflicts through the centuries that pertain to sign language and spoken communication philosophies, as well as the contributions of the individuals who advocated alternative strategies for teaching deaf children. More recently, investigators have recognized the need for a diverse approach to language and language learning. Advances in technology, cognitive science, linguistics, and the social sciences have alternately led and followed changes in theory and practice, resulting in a changing landscape for deaf and hard-of-hearing individuals and those connected to them. This second volume of the The Oxford Handbook of Deaf Studies, Language, and Education picks up where that first landmark volume left off, describing those advances and offering readers the opportunity to understand the current status of research in the field while recognizing the opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. In Volume 2, an international group of contributing experts provide state-of-the-art summaries intended for students, practitioners, and researchers. Not only does it describe where we are, it helps to chart courses for the future.

Holistic Engineering Education - 2884481660

Holistic Engineering Education Springer-Verlag New York Inc.

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Holistic Engineering Education: Beyond Technology is a compilation of coordinated and focused essays from world leaders in the engineering profession who are dedicated to a transformation of engineering education and practice. The contributors define a new and holistic approach to education and practice that captures the creativity, interdisciplinarity, complexity, and adaptability required for the profession to grow and truly serve global needs. With few exceptions today, engineering students and professionals continue to receive a traditional, technically-based education and training using curriculum models developed for early 20th century manufacturing and machining. While this educational paradigm has served engineering well, helping engineers create awe-inspiring machines and technologies for society, the coursework and expectations of most engineering programs eschew breadth and intellectual exploration to focus on consistent technological precision and study. Why this dichotomy?§While engineering will always need precise technological skill, the 21st century innovation economy demands a new professional perspective that recognizes the value of complex systems thinking, cross-disciplinary collaborations, economic and environmental impacts (sustainability), and effective communication to global and community leaders, thus enabling engineers to consider "the whole patient" of society's needs. The goal of this book is to inspire, lead, and guide this critically needed transformation of engineering education.§"Holistic Engineering Education: Beyond Technology points the way to a transformation of engineering education and practice that will be sufficiently robust, flexible, and systems-oriented to meet the grand challenges of the 21st century with their ever-increasing scale, complexity, and transdisciplinary nature."§Charles Vest, President, National Academy of Engineering; President Emeritus, MIT: "This collection of essays provides compelling arguments for the need of an engineering education that prepares engineers for the problems of the 21st century. Following the National Academy`s report on the Engineer of 2020, this book brings together experts who make the case for an engineering profession that looks beyond developing just cool technologies and more into creating solutions that can address important problems to benefit real people."§Linda Katehi, Chancellor, University of California at Davis: "This superb volume offers a provocative portrait of the exciting future of engineering education A dramatically new form of engineering education is needed that recognizes this field as a liberal art, as a profession that combines equal parts technical rigor and creative design The authors challenge the next generation to engineering educators to imagine, think and act in new ways. "§Lee S. Shulman, President Emeritus, The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and Charles E. Ducommun Professor of Education Emeritus, Stanford University.

Home Education consists of six lectures by Charlotte Mason about the raising and educating of young children (up to the age of nine), for parents and teachers. She encourages us to spend a lot of time outdoors, immersed in nature and handling natural objects and collecting experiences on which to base the rest of their education. She discusses the use of training in good habits such as attention, thinking, imagining, remembering, performing tasks with perfect execution, obedience, and truthfulness, to replace undesirable tendencies in children (and the adults that they grow into). She details how lessons in various school subjects can be done using her approach. She concludes with remarks about the Will, the Conscience, and the Divine Life in the Child. Charlotte Mason was a late nineteenth-century British educator whose ideas were far ahead of her time. She believed that children are born persons worthy of respect, rather than blank slates, and that it was better to feed their growing minds with living literature and vital ideas and knowledge, rather than dry facts and knowledge filtered and pre-digested by the teacher. Her method of education, still used by some private schools and many homeschooling families, is gentle and flexible, especially with younger children, and includes first-hand exposure to great and noble ideas through books in each school subject, conveying wonder and arousing curiosity, and through reflection upon great art, music, and poetry; nature observation as the primary means of early science teaching; use of manipulatives and real-life application to understand mathematical concepts and learning to reason, rather than rote memorization and working endless sums; and an emphasis on character and on cultivating and maintaining good personal habits. Schooling is teacher-directed, not child-led, but school time should be short enough to allow students free time to play and to pursue their own worthy interests such as handicrafts. Traditional Charlotte Mason schooling is firmly based on Christianity, although the method is also used successfully by secular families and families of other religions.

This title explores effective teaching across the curriculum drawing on the experience of art teachers. Richard Hickman considers effective teaching across the curriculum, examining the notion that successful teachers of art and design are amongst the best teachers of any subject with much to offer outside their discipline in terms of pedagogy. The case study approach focuses on adolescent learning, although much of what is considered is applicable to all ages and phases of education, to consider: What are the characteristics of successful art teaching? How do individual life experiences inform art teachers' teaching? How in turn might others benefit from their pedagogical practices? Using self-portraiture, autoethnography and autobiography, Hickman draws together the varied experiences of a group of art teachers to explore a range of issues, including identity, learning environment and the nature of the teacher/learner relationship are discussed with clarity and imagination.
