Inclusion and Art Education at Second Level LAP Lambert Academic Publishing

According to UNESCO (1994) the child with special educational needs is entitled to regular access, full education and curriculum adaptation. In Ireland, since the introduction of the Education Act (1998) and the EPSEN Act (2004) there has been a significant shift in government policy towards the creation of inclusive learning environments for a diverse society. This book addresses the significant challenges for both art teacher and art student with special educational needs in mainstream post-primary education. The approach to the research taken was qualitative in nature with certain aspects of quantitative study. From the analysis, three key recurring topics emerged which allowed the author to discuss the findings in thematic form. Visual art education and inclusive practice in mainstream post primary schools; sufficient access to art education for all: and the identity of the disabled student in relation to the curriculum. This book should be especially useful to teachers and student teachers of art craft and design. It should also be helpful to special educational needs assistants and to parents of children with disabilities.

Catholic View of Education in the United States Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from A Catholic View of Education in the United States: A Paper We approach with diffidence a subject so often discussed by the ablest debaters in our Legislature, and so often elaborately treated by the most gifted writers, Catholic and non-Catholic, to be found in the country. Indeed, in a Catholic point of view, we may well say that the subject has been exhausted, and that, with a logical precision, lucidity of arguments, and force of illustration sufficient to satisfy any but the most determined enemies of freedom of education. Scarcely an original feature of interest can be introduced in an essay on the subject; the most one can now aim at is to give the essence of the arguments on the more salient points, solely for the purpose of impressing on public opinion the justice of Catholic claims to consideration. Those claims are now cordially endorsed by nearly seven millions of the citizens of this Republic. Not one quarter of one per-cent could be found among the Catholic body at present in the United States to deny the necessity of religious, denominational education. Not more than a decade ago, there were not a few among the Catholic body who gave no support to separate Christian education. Their refusal to recognize and patronize schools in which Catholic dogma was taught and the principles of Catholic morality enforced, was dictated by reasons which experience showed them to be as false as they were unjust. Comparatively wealthy Catholics did not wish to be regarded as the patrons of schools in which the children of the poor and helpless were educated, even though their teachers were men and women who had sacrificed every worldly enjoyment, to do the noblest and most practically benevolent work that the true disciples of Christ could select. Benjamin Rush and His Services, to American Education (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Benjamin Rush and His Services, to American Education More than one hundred years have passed since the death of Doctor Benjamin Rush and yet nothing that purports to be a complete biography of him has been published. There are many short sketches, one copied from the other in many cases, and several valuable eulogies. Better than any of these is the "Memorial, Written by Himself", which was privately published "for the benefit of his descendants" several years ago. A man who had so large a share in the work of his city and the councils of his nation and the life of his times deserves better of posterity. The life of a physician should be written by a brother physician and Dr. S. Weir Mitchell was much interested in Dr. Rush and collected and published some material. It will always be regretted that among the many labors of his life he did not find time also to complete this one. But if no physician will take time to write a biography of Rush, then a layman may be pardoned for doing so, if he can approach the subject on what may be called Dr. Rush's second level of interests. his interest in education and social reform. Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Cartographies of becoming in education: A Deleuze-Guattari Perspective proposes a non-hierarchical approach that maps teaching and learning with the power of affect and what a body can do/become in different educational contexts. Teaching and learning is an encounter with the unknown and happen as specific responses to particular problems encountered with/in life. In this edited volume, international scholars map out potential ruptures in teaching and learning in order to conceptualize education differently. One way is through the multidisciplinary lens of MLT (Multiple Literacies Theory) in which reading is intensive and immanent. The authors deploy different aspects of MLT while creating and experimenting with ethology, teaching, learning, curriculum, teacher education and technology in relation to visual arts, music, mathematics, theatre, workplace literacy, second language education, and architecture. With the forces of globalization, digital media and economic re-structuring reconfiguring the social, political and economic landscape, societies require innovative ways of thinking about education. Cartographies of becoming in education: A Deleuze-Guattari Perspective is a response to problems posed by such forces. The problematic surrounding Deleuze-Guattari and education continues to grow. Diana Masny's scholarship in this area is well known and appreciated through her many essays and books that develop MLT (Multiple Literacies Theory). Cartographies of Becoming in Education: A Deleuze-Guattari Perspective continues her effort to broaden the notion of education and show its intersections with MLT. The series of essays do this by forming a number of 'entries,' five to be precise: politicizing education, affect and education, literacies and becoming, teacher-becomings, and deterritorializing boundaries. Each 'entry' explores the way an MLT inflected orientation enables us to further grasp the creative inventiveness of the Deleuze-Guattarian tool kit that can be applied to areas of music education, ethnography, art, drama, literacy, mathematics, landscape ecology, ethology and teacher education. It is a vivid illustration of the cartography that maps the rhizomatic movements that are taking place by international scholars who are deterritorializing education as a discipline of modernity. I highly recommend this collection of essays to those of us who are continually asking how might education be rethought through the unthought. It opens up new territories. - Jan Jagodzinski, University of Alberta, Author of Psychoanalyzing Cinema.

Acclaim for The Education of a Speculator, a provocative and penetrating look into the mind, the soul, and the strategies of one of the most controversial traders of all time "A compelling and an entertaining read." -The Wall Street Journal "Victor Niederhoffer gives us page after page of distilled investment wisdom. Taken together, this is pure nectar to those who aim for consistently superior stock market performance." -Barron's "The Education of a Speculator offers plenty of insights into the way markets work, but the epiphanies are what a reader might expect from Lao-tzu rather than, say, Graham and Dodd." -Worth magazine "The Education of a Speculator is the first meaningful book on speculating. Successful speculating is as fine an art as chess, checkers, fishing, poker, tennis, painting, and music. Niederhoffer brings forth the best from each of these fields and shows the investor how their principles can enrich one's life and net worth." -Martin Edelston, President, Boardroom Inc., publishers of Boardroom Classics and Bottom Line/Personal "With an original mind and an eclectic approach, Victor Niederhoffer takes the reader from Brighton Beach to Wall Street, visiting all stops of interest along the way. What emerges is a book full of insights, useful to the professional and layman alike." -George Soros, Principal Investment Advisor, The Quantum Fund

This title explores effective teaching across the curriculum drawing on the experience of art teachers. Richard Hickman considers effective teaching across the curriculum, examining the notion that successful teachers of art and design are amongst the best teachers of any subject with much to offer outside their discipline in terms of pedagogy. The case study approach focuses on adolescent learning, although much of what is considered is applicable to all ages and phases of education, to consider: What are the characteristics of successful art teaching? How do individual life experiences inform art teachers' teaching? How in turn might others benefit from their pedagogical practices? Using self-portraiture, autoethnography and autobiography, Hickman draws together the varied experiences of a group of art teachers to explore a range of issues, including identity, learning environment and the nature of the teacher/learner relationship are discussed with clarity and imagination. Unorthodox success principles from a billionaire entrepreneur and philanthropist Eli Broad's embrace of "unreasonable thinking" has helped him build two Fortune 500 companies, amass personal billions, and use his wealth to create a new approach to philanthropy. He has helped to fund scientific research institutes, K-12 education reform, and some of the world's greatest contemporary art museums. By contrast, "reasonable" people come up with all the reasons something new and different can't be done, because, after all, no one else has done it that way. This book shares the "unreasonable" principles-from negotiating to risk-taking, from investing to hiring-that have made Eli Broad such a success. Broad helped to create the Frank Gehry-designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, the Museum of Contemporary Art, the Broad Contemporary Art Museum at the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, and The Broad, a new museum being built in downtown Los Angeles His investing approach to philanthropy has led to the creation of scientific and medical research centers in the fields of genomic medicine and stem cell research At his alma mater, Michigan State University, he endowed a full-time M.B.A. program, and he and his wife have funded a new contemporary art museum on campus to serve the broader region Eli Broad is the founder of two Fortune 500 companies: KB Home and SunAmerica If you're stuck doing what reasonable people do-and not getting anywhere-let Eli Broad show you how to be unreasonable, and see how far your next endeavor can go.

Early Medieval Art Oxford University Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The first millennium saw a rich and distinctive artistic tradition form in Europe. While books had long been central to the Christian religious tradition, education, and culture, they now became an important artistic medium, sometimes decorated with brilliant colours and precious metals. Lawrence Nees explores issues of artist patronage, craftsmanship, holy men and women, monasteries, secular courts, and the expressive and educational roles of artistic creation. He discusses early Christian art within the late Roman tradition, and the arts of the newly established kingdoms of northern Europe not as opposites, but as different aspects of a larger historical situation. This approach reveals the onset of an exciting new visual relationship between the church and the populace throughout medieval Europe, restoring a previously marginalized subject to a central status in our artistic and cultural heritage.
