Saw Palmetto Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Saw Palmetto: Sabal Serrulata, Serenoa Serrulata; Its History, Botany, Chemistry, Pharmacology, Provings, Clinical Experience and Therapeutic Applications The drug which forms the subject of this treatise belongs to the great family Palmaceć (Palms), a large order, which is preeminent in the whole world of plants for-the grandeur and beauty attained by many of the species. They are mainly tropical, there being but five species in the United States. These range in size from the dwarf palmetto of the sands of the coast, not more than a foot high, to the Royal Palm, found in the depth of the primeval forests of the extreme southern portion of Florida, which towers to the height of two hundred feet. No order of plants has been put to greater uses for ornamentation or utility. There is hardly a place in art in which it has not been used. It is actually indispensable to the life of many tribes and nations of human beings. Its members supply food, beverage, shelter and a thousand other means of sustenance and comfort to the inhabitants of nearly every country in the tropics. This great family numbers over one hundred species. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. The Harmony of Power and Law, the Basis of Republicanism Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Harmony of Power and Law, the Basis of Republicanism: An Address, Delivered Before the Moultrie and Palmetto Guards, June 28th, 1856, in Hibernian Hall This story, so classic in itself, points a moral oi' universal application. Happily for virtue, human actions are not mea sured by the standard of mere display. We honor the work, however lowly the instrument - we surround with praise the instrument itself: We bow in reverence at the passing bier of modest excellence - we weep over the misfortunes of genius beggared and despised - we rise up in sympa thy with the powerless and oppressed. The pages over which we linger most fondly, are not those in which grandeur, and wealth, and power are portrayed but with swelling hearts, and bated breath, we pause where heroism battles with misfortune, where patriotism, weak in numbers, and strong only in spirit, struggles against odds, and where fame stoops even to the dust to crown the fallen, the prostrate, and the dead. The American Revolution, certainly cannot rank among the great military pageants of history. The countless hosts of Xerxes, the panoplied armies of the Crusaders. And even the secondary wars of modern Europe, far surpass it, in all that strikes the eye, or dazzles the fancy. We see greater num bers, greater equipments, greater loss of life, on one side in the Crimea, than were on both sides during the whole Revolution. Scotch-Irish Migration to South Carolina, 1772 Clearfield

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

This book began as Jean Stephenson's effort to validate the family tradition that her great-great-grandparents emigrated from Belfast to South Carolina under the leadership of Covenanter Presbyterian minister William Martin in 1772. The author was not only able to authenticate the crux of the story, but, in the process, to place nearly 500 Scotch-Irish families in South Carolina on the eve of the Revolutionary War. The impetus for the colonization was the combination of exorbitant land rents in Northern Ireland, sometimes provoking violent resistance, and the offer of free land and inexpensive tools and provisions tendered by the colonial government of South Carolina. For instance, each Scottish Covenanter was entitled to 100 acres for himself and 50 acres for his spouse, and an additional 50 acres for each child brought to South Carolina. Faced with this crisis and opportunity, Reverend Martin persuaded his parishioners that they had nothing to lose by leaving Ulster, and before long he was in charge of a small fleet of vessels bound for South Carolina. This story is recounted by Ms. Stephenson from the records of the South Carolina Council Journal and tax lists, passenger lists, church histories, and other sources housed at the South Carolina Department of Archives and History. Genealogists will want to pore over the land evidences assembled by the author from entries found in the Council Journal, namely, authorizations, survey abstracts, wills, deeds and other records which demonstrate where each family settled, or was entitled to settle. The families, which are grouped under the vessel they traveled in, are identified by the name of the household head, names of spouse and children, number of acres surveyed, county, location of the nearest body of water and the names of abutting neighbor, and the source of the information. For the reader's convenience, there is not only an index of the persons found in the list of survey entries and a separate subject index, but also a table of spelling variants. A work of exacting scholarship, Scotch-Irish Migration to South Carolina, 1772 is a crucial source on settlement of the Palmetto State on the eve of the American Revolution.
