Complete Works of Thomas Manton, D.D, Vol. 19 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Complete Works of Thomas Manton, D.D, Vol. 19: Containing Sermons on Several Texts of Scripture These words are part of Christ's rebuke to Peter, who, when the high priest's servants came to attack Christ, draweth his sword, and cuts off Malchus' ear, which our Lord first health, and then reproveth his disciple for this temerarious action: 'Put up thy sword into the sheath.' He reproveth him, partly because it becometh no private man by opposition to resist authority; but the chief reason was, our Lord would not be hindered in performing the great act of his mediation, his dying for sinners. You shall see in another place, when Peter counselled him against his sufferings, he rebuked him with the same severity that he doth the devil tempting him to idolatry: 'Get thee behind me, Satan,' Mat. xvi. 23, compared with Mat. iv. 10. And here this rash and unseasonable interposition, to save his master by force, is again reproved. In Peters temerity, take notice of the difference between military valour and christian fortitude. He that faltered and was blown down by the weak blast of a damsels question hath now the courage with a single sword to venture upon an whole band of men. Military valour is boisterous, and dependeth upon the heat of blood and spirits, and is better for a sudden onset than a deliberate trial; but christian fortitude dependeth on the strength of faith, and lieth in a meek subjection to God, and will enable us to endure the greatest torments rather than encroach upon the conscience of our duty to God. A man of a military forward spirit may outbrave dangers when they are sudden, but faileth or fainteth in weaker trials, that are managed rather in a way of charge and accusation than force. But in Christ's rebuke, take notice of his obedience to God and love to men. Obedience to God: Shall I not suffer patiently, without resisting, what my Father hath determined me to suffer? And love to men; it was the cup which God had given him to drink for the good of his people, and therefore he would by no means decline it. In the words take notice of - (1.) The notion by which affliction is expressed; it is a cup.' (2.) God's ordering of it, Which my Father hath given me.' (3.) Christ's submission, 'Shall I not drink it?' 1. For the term or notion whereby Christ's sufferings are expressed, 'a cup.' About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from Select Works of Thomas Chalmers, D.D. LL. D , Vol. 8 1. Should Scripture, previously ascertained to be the Word of God, affirm a connection between any two events which lie beyond the reach of my own observation, I would instantly admit the truth of the connection, however ignorant of its reason or its propriety. I may not be able to understand it as a principle, yet that ought not to prevent my reliance upon it as a fact which I received on the ground of credible information. I might know not how it is, yet have perfect reason for knowing that so it is. And the explicit declarations of the Bible, that by faith we are saved - that he who believeth hath everlasting life - that he who believeth not shall not see life, leave no room for doubting that there is a real, even though it should for ever remain an inexplicable connection, a sequence, if we may so term it, however mysterious, between a man's faith and his salvation. 2. But while bound on the testimony of an authentic and authoritive revelation to admit the fact of this connection, even though utterly unable to comprehend the reason of it, it is a possible thing that Scripture may have given some partial information at least of the one, even as it has given entire and absolute information of the other. Excerpt from The Poems of Thomas Bailey Aldrich in Two Volumes, Vol. 2 of 2 Spring In New England An Ode The long years come and go, And the Past, The sorrowful, splendid Past, With its glory and its woe, Seems never to have been. The bugle's taunting blast Has died away by Southern ford and glen: The mock-bird sings unfrightened in its dell; The ensanguined stream flows free of stain; Where once the hissing death-bolt fell, And all along the artillery's level lines Leapt flames of hell, The planter smiles upon the sprouting grain, And tends his vines. Seems never to have been? O sombre days and grand, Seeing our heroes' graves are green About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Excerpt from The Life of Thomas Ken, D. D Bishop of Bath and Wells, Vol. 1 of 2 It will be well, I think, to begin with a brief outline of the genesis and growth of these volumes. In 1884 I was led to appeal to those who either revered Bishop Ken for the saintliness of his life, or simply loved him as the writer of the Morning and Evening Hymns, to join with me in an effort to place in our Cathedral at Wells some adequate memorial of one whose name was held in honour in all the Churches, but of whom, at that time, we had no outward and visible recognition, where it might most have been expected. I was naturally led, in doing this, to study the life of Ken more closely than I had done before, and it was not long before I came to the conviction that there was more than room for another biography. I have no desire to undervalue the labours of my predecessors. The life published by the Bishops great-nephew, William Hawkins, in 1713, contained much interesting material, which probably came to him from the Bishop's own lips. On the other hand it was singularly meagre, and often singularly inaccurate, transposing events in his great-uncle's life out of their right order. Excerpt from A Portion of the Journal Kept by Thomas Raikes, Esq., Vol. 1 of 2: From 1831 to 1847; Comprising Reminiscences of Social and Political Life in London and Paris During That Period The Author of this Journal was the eldest son of Mr. Thomas Raikes, a rich and respected merchant in the city of London, who was descended from an ancient family in Yorkshire, and himself a personal friend of Mr. Pitt and of Mr. Wilberforce. His son was educated at Eton, where he became a fair classical scholar. In his nineteenth year he was sent abroad with a private tutor. In the course of his travels he visited most of the German courts, and made himself extensively acquainted with modern languages. On his return to England, he became a partner in his father's house; but having little inclination for mercantile affairs, and a marked preference for social and literary pursuits, he very soon established himself in the west end of the town, became a member of the fashionable clubs, and mixed largely in what is, by a somewhat questionable courtesy, denominated the best society. He married Miss Sophia Bayly, a daughter of Nathaniel Bayly, Esq., the proprietor of large estates in the West Indies. The entries in this Journal will show in what sort of society Mr. Raikes's life was passed, and the intimacies he formed. In 1793, when that Society was in its infancy, and before such associations had been declared illegal, he was its secretary; and had rendered himself remarkable for the bold manner in which he opposed himself to the House of Lords, in a personal contest with that House. Excerpt from Letters of Thomas Edward Brown, Vol. 2: Author of 'Fo'c'sle Yarns', Edited With an Introductory Memoir It is not too late, I hope, to wish you a very happy New Year. You shrank from that rough sea, and I don't wonder; it really was very bad. When will you come over in February? Tell me, and I will order a primrose or two. Last year the fine weather began at the opening of March, and lasted all spring and summer. It was quite delicious. I discovered a new country, the flat land lying between the hills and the north shore, more particularly that portion of it which we call the Curragh (agh strong guttural). The Curragh is a green bog, many miles in extent. It is full of bog-plants: for instance, there are whole acres of that most lovely flower the bog-bean. I had conjectured the beauty of this level space, with its sweet winding ways, and in 'Tommy Big-eyes' I had expressed what was after all a merely superficial appreciation. Now I know it.
