Memoirs of the Geological Survey of the United Kingdom, Vol. 5 Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Memoirs of the Geological Survey of the United Kingdom, Vol. 5: The Jurassic Rocks of Britain; The Middle and Upper Oolitic Rocks of England (Yorkshire Excepted) This volume which, like its two predecessors, is the work of Mr. H.B. Woodward, completes the general description of the Jurassic Rocks of England and Wales. It includes an account of the strata from the Oxfordian to the Purbeckian divisions, with some remarks on the probably marine equivalents of the Purbeck group in Lincolnshire. As in previous volumes of this Memoir, full references are given to the labours of others who have worked at the formations described in the following chapters. In early days the broad outlines of the geology of the Middle and Upper Oolites were admirably sketched by Webster, Sedgwick, Buckland, De la Beche, Lonsdale, Fitton, Mantell, and John Phillips. Among the later more detailed investigations, special prominence may be given to the elaborate work of Prof. J. F. Blake and Mr. Hudleston on the Corallian rocks; to the separate papers by Prof. Blake on the Kimeridge Clay and Portland Beds; and to the work of Thomas Roberts on the Corallian clays. These observers have done much to elucidate the minute stratigraphy and palajontology of the formations to which they have so sedulously devoted their attention. Our information regarding the Oxfordian and Purbeckian groups has not hitherto been summarised, and many details on this subject are now for the first time published. I may specially refer to the account of the Kellaways strata at Kellaways, and to the lists of fossils from that and other localities in the southwest of England. The Geological Survey has not hitherto published any memoir descriptive of the higher Oolitic strata in Dorset, although the admirable Maps and Sections by H. W. Bristow, and the detailed sections of the Purbeck Beds by that author and Edward Forbes, have depicted some of the main features of the geology of that region. In the preparation of this volume full advantage has been taken of previous Memoirs of the Survey descriptive of the strata in the Midland area, especially those by Prof. Hull, Prof. Green, Prof. Judd, Mr. Jukes-Browne, and Mr. Strahan. The Dartmouth, 1844, Vol. 5 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Dartmouth, 1844, Vol. 5 In 1805 - 6 and 7 the subject of Infant Baptism was much agitated, having been brought Up by Rev. Daniel Merrill of Sedgwick, Me, who had been educated a Pedo Baptist minister, but had arrived at a change of views res pecting the proper subjects of Christian Baptism. He pub lished a book of ten sermons in explanation and defence of his views. This publication, which speedily ran through eight or ten editions, drew forth several replies. It was at this time that Dr. W. Preached and gave to the public a discourse on the perpetuity of the Abrahamic covenant. Founded on the sentiment of the Apostle Paul: If ye are Christ's, then are ye Abraham's seed, and heirs according to the promise. The point maintained was, that though the Mosaical law was temporary, yet not so the covenant of Abraham; that it is continued under the Christian dispen sation, agreeably to the Apostle's doctrine, the law which was 450 years later than the Abrahamic covenant could not disannul the latter. This discourse was exceedingly well received, and led to a public controversy between the nu thor and the Rev. Thomas Baldwin, D. D., of Boston. Some Miscellaneous Results of the Work of the Division of Entomology, Vol. 7 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from Some Miscellaneous Results of the Work of the Division of Entomology, Vol. 7 Report for 1856) a Very interesting article on the grain Aphis (aplw's avenge Fab), in which he made the unfortunate mistake of confound ing several other species with the true grain louse; erroneous figures of one of which were published on Pl. 1, figs. 5 and 6, representing a species of Siphonophora Arooiz. This error of judgment in distinguish ing genera as found upon grain has mainly been the cause to divert the attention of later entomologists from the true characters of the Species described by Fabricius. Until the spring of 1880 the writer also entertained the opinion that the species treated of by Prof. Cyrus Thomas, in his Eighth Report (pp. 51 was identical with that mentioned and described by Fitch as Apfiz's avenge Fab. During the spring of 1880, however, the writer became suspicious that something was wrong, since the description given by Thomas did not agree with that published by Fabricius. At that time I happened to examine a lot of aphides from Pocomoke City, Md, which were reported to be extremely numerous and destructive to wheat in that vicinity. These, in my opinion, agreed exactly with the description of ap/lz's arenze Fab., and Kaltenbach, but not with the description by Thomas, and I have held to this opinion ever since. The same form, having been found by myself or received from various localities, infesting grains or grasses, agrees well with the description of the Species published by Fitch, but not with that of Thomas.
