Helicobacter pylori - 2874787014

Helicobacter pylori Springer Netherlands

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The explosion of new information on Helicobacter pylori-related disease, both in the basic sciences and in clinical medicine, has continued to progress at an unprecedented pace. In many instances H. pylori infection, both in man and in the laboratory animal, has become a model to investigate fundamental biological issues such as micro-organism host interactions, intracellular signaling, development of mucosal atrophy, mechanism of microbial resistance, disease modifying factors etc. §In view of this bewildering flood of new information, another meeting on H. pylori in the successful series `Basic mechanisms to clinical cure' was organized in January 1998 in San Diego, California, to define the `state-of-affairs' in H. pylori research at this time. The main objective was to integrate this new information in a series of top-quality presentations and discussions between investigators and clinicians addressing all aspects of H. pylori research and to review the current position and future research directions. The format included state-of-the-art presentations by world experts heavily involved in H. pylori research followed by in-depth discussion on intriguing or controversial issues. The presentations were grouped according to the leading theme: characteristics of the organism, mode of transmission, mechanisms of H. pylori-induced inflammation, causation of disturbances of gastric secretory and motor function, aspects of clinical presentation and management, problems related to H. pylori-associated gastric adenocarcinoma and MALT-lymphoma, novel aspects of antimicrobial therapy and vaccination. The meeting concluded with a synoptic agenda of suggested future studies for the microbiologist, the histopathologist and the clinician. §The chapters published in these proceedings accurately reflect the content of the superb presentations. The reader will readily appreciate the excellent level of the `cutting-edge' research which was described and discussed. These proceedings are another testimony to the enormous impact on basic science and clinical medicine of the H. pylori discovery. Although much was achieved, it is also readily apparent that many questions remain to be answered and many problems remain to be solved.

Neonatal Intensive Care - 2872360796

Neonatal Intensive Care Springer-Verlag Berlin and Heidelberg GmbH & Co....

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The significant strides made during the past decade in neonatal medicine are based largely upon the provision of intensive perinatal care to the parturient, her fetus, and the newborn. In addition to technologic advances in the bioelec tronic monitoring of the fetus and newborn, the introduction of noninvasive methods to monitor oxygenation, the pharma cologic manipulation ofthe ductus arteriosus and pulmonary vasculature, and the use of ultrasonographic diagnosis of congenital heart defects and other lesions, intensive efforts by neonatal specialists throughout the world have also contri buted to the decline in neonatal and infant mortality. Professors Wille and Obladen have provided an authoritative manual outlining intensive care of newborns and the ways in which the science of neonatal medicine, the technology of the 1980 s, and the art of application have resulted in the practice of neonatal intensive care at the Kinderklinik of the University of Heidelberg. The English translation resulted from the success of the German edition and will serve well the needs of the English-speaking student and practitioner of neonatal intensive care. T. Allen Merrit, M. Bioart and the Vitality of Media - 2878175185

Bioart and the Vitality of Media University of Washington Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Bioart, art that uses either living materials (such as bacteria or transgenic organisms) or more traditional materials to comment on, or even transform, biotechnological practice, now receives enormous media attention. Yet despite this attention, bioart is frequently misunderstood. "Bioart and the Vitality of Media" is the first comprehensive theoretical account of the art form, situating it in the contexts of art history, laboratory practice, and media theory. Mitchell begins by sketching a brief history of bioart in the twentieth and twenty-first centuries, describing the artistic, scientific, and social preconditions that made it conceptually and technologically possible. He illustrates how bioartists employ technologies and practices from the medical and life sciences in an effort to transform relationships among science, medicine, corporate interests, and the public.By illustrating the ways in which bioart links a biological understanding of media-that is, 'media' understood as the elements of an environment that facilitate the growth and development of living entities-with communicational media, "Bioart and the Vitality of Media" demonstrates how art and biotechnology together change our conceptions and practices of mediation. Reading bioart through a range of resources-from Immanuel Kant's discussion of disgust to Gilles Deleuze's theory of affect to Gilbert Simondon's concept of 'individuation' - provides readers with a new theoretical approach for understanding bioart and its relationships to both new media and scientific institutions. Robert Mitchell is associate professor English at Duke University. He is the author, with Catherine Waldby, of "Tissue Economies: Blood, Organs, and Cell Lines in Late Capitalism" and, with Phillip Thurtle, "Data Made Flesh: Embodying Information" and "Semiotic Flesh: Information and the Human Body".

Eros and Magic in the Renaissance - 2861954342

Eros and Magic in the Renaissance The University of Chicago Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

It is a widespread prejudice of modern, scientific society that "magic" is merely a ludicrous amalgam of recipes and methods derived from primitive and erroneous notions about nature. "Eros and Magic in the Renaissance" challenges this view, providing an in-depth scholarly explanation of the workings of magic and showing that magic continues to exist in an altered form even today. Renaissance magic, according to Ioan Couliano, was a scientifically plausible attempt to manipulate individuals and groups based on a knowledge of motivations, particularly erotic motivations. Its key principle was that everyone (and in a sense everything) could be influenced by appeal to sexual desire. In addition, the magician relied on a profound knowledge of the art of memory to manipulate the imaginations of his subjects. In these respects, Couliano suggests, magic is the precursor of the modern psychological and sociological sciences, and the magician is the distant ancestor of the psychoanalyst and the advertising and publicity agent. In the course of his study, Couliano examines in detail the ideas of such writers as Giordano Bruno, Marsilio Ficino, and Pico della Mirandola and illuminates many aspects of Renaissance culture, including heresy, medicine, astrology, alchemy, courtly love, the influence of classical mythology, and even the role of fashion in clothing. Just as science gives the present age its ruling myth, so magic gave a ruling myth to the Renaissance. Because magic relied upon the use of images, and images were repressed and banned in the Reformation and subsequent history, magic was replaced by exact science and modern technology and eventually forgotten. Couliano's remarkable scholarship helps us to recover much of its original significance and will interest a wide audience in the humanities and social sciences.

Vincent Sarich,Frank Miele - Race Taylor & Francis Inc

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

The conventional wisdom in contemporary social science claims that human races are not biologically valid categories. Many argue the very words '"race" and "racial differences" should be abolished because they support racism. In Race, Vincent Sarich and Frank Miele challenge both these tenets. First, they cite the historical record, the art and literature of other civilizations and cultures, morphological studies, cognitive psychology, and the latest research in medical genetics, forensics, and the human genome to demonstrate that racial differences are not trivial, but very real. They conclude with the paradox that, while, scientific honesty requires forthright recognition of racial differences, public policy should not recognize racial-group membership. The evidence and issues raised in this book will be of critical interest to students of race in behavioral and political science, medicine, and law.

Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA), 08-JUN-09, Volume 301, Issue 17, Jason M. Organ, PhD, Center for Anatomical Science and Education, Department of Surgery, Saint Louis University School of Medicine, St. Louis, MO -- "As the number of anatomy curriculum hours continues to decrease at many major medical schools, Tank and Gest recognized the need for a new anatomical atlas emphasizing those structures most likely to be taught in the modern curricula. Provided with the unique opportunity to build an original atlas from the ground up, the authors of this fine volume did not disappoint. Drawing on their combined 60 years of classroom teaching experience, they designed an atlas with a strong approach to presenting anatomical information in a sequence not only logical from a teaching perspective but highly accessible to students as well. In fact, the authors' primary intent in their design was to create images that are faster and easier for students to use, because 'speed and ease of use have become critical needs in the era of compressed anatomical curricula'... "In each section, the authors take their audience on a journey from outside in, beginning with surface anatomy and ultimately progressing deeper through different dissection fields. This approach, coupled with consistent viewpoints for the images (ie, specimens are always placed in anatomical position, and perspectives are always directly anterior, posterior, medial, or lateral), makes the information easily accessible to the novice anatomy student and the not-so-novice instructor alike. "One of the most striking differences between this atlas and its contemporaries is the effective use of a ghosting technique in many of the illustrations, wherein a structure passing behind another structure is still visible through the structure in the foreground. The advantage of this technique is that 3-dimensional relationships of important structures-relationships often left to the imagination of the reader in other atlases-can be appreciated in 2 dimensions...Some of the most effective uses of this ghosting technique are found in the illustrations of the inguinal region...Students often struggle to understand which tissue layers of the anterior abdominal wall contribute to the superficial and deep inguinal rings...This ghosting technique not only allows Tank and Gest to show an external view of all 3 muscular layers and the transversalis fascia (with the contents of the inguinal canal appropriately illustrated) but also enables them to 'reverse' the image and present an internal view of the same structures and their 3-dimensional relationships. Indeed, the illustrations and labeling of the pectineal and lacunar ligaments are among the best I have seen, and I often found myself reaching for this atlas when students visited me with questions outside of the dissection laboratory. "In addition to the atlas, the authors and publisher offer a set of online supporting products...For example, all of the illustrations are available in an interactive, electronic format, enabling students to search images and compare features across images. Students can also use the interactive labeling exercises available online to test their individual knowledge of anatomy in preparation for examinations. "In short, this is a modern atlas constructed to complement a modern anatomy curriculum and designed to meet the needs of modern, computer-s

Lost Civilizations of the Stone Age - 2867164193

Lost Civilizations of the Stone Age Simon & Schuster

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

An authoritative, eye-opening look at Stone Age civilizations that explodes traditional portrayals of prehistoryThe rise of historical civilization 5,000 years ago is often depicted as if those societies were somehow created out of nothing. However, recent discoveries of astonishing accomplishments from the Neolithic Age -- in art, technology, writing, math, science, religion, medicine and exploration -- demand a fundamental rethinking of humanity before the dawn of written history. In this fascinating book, Richard Rudgley describes how-- The intrepid explorers of the Stone Age discovered all of the world's major land masses long before the so-called Age of Discovery-- Stone Age man performed medical operations, including amputations and delicate cranial surgeries-- Paleolithic cave artists of Western Europe used techniques that were forgotten until the Renaissance-- Prehistoric life expectancy was better than it is for contemporary third-world populationsRudgley reminds us just how savage so-called civilized people can be, and demonstrates how the cultures that have been reviled as savage were truly civilized. The Lost Civilizations of the Stone Age shows the great debt that contemporary society owes to its prehistoric predecessors. It is a rich introduction to a lost world that will redefine the meaning of civilization itself.
