Saint-Saens: Complete Piano Concertos Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

Camille Saint-Saëns was a truly revered composer in mid-19th- and early-20th-century France. A contributor to many genres and to the general French musical renaissance of this time, he was described as ?the greatest musical mind? of the era by Hans von Bülow, after he sight read the orchestral scores of Wagner?s operas Lohengrin, Siegfried and Tristan und Isolde. Saint-Saëns? music was often bold and ambitious, but he was nevertheless a cautious composer who understood the importance of reputation in Paris at this time; his most successful work, The Carnival of the Animals, was not published until after his death, as he feared the effect it would have on his reputation as a serious composer. This collection brings together all of Saint-Saëns? piano concertos, providing a chronological tour through much of his career: the period of composition spans from 1858 to 1896. Written just five years after the dazzling First Symphony, Concerto No.1 portrays a hint of wariness, displaying charm rather than overt bravura (the only exception being the virtuosic concluding cadenza). The perennial favourite Concerto No.2 is next, composed in just three weeks and with the ink barely dry on the page at the first performance. A highlight of No.3 is the second movement Nocturne, with its tender melody, while No.4 features hymn-like melodies and dazzling brass fanfares. No.5, the ?Egyptian?, lives up to its name in its exotic, Arabian themes, with the hints of a bazaar audible in the splendid finale.Africa Op.9, a veritable piano concerto written by Saint-Saëns during his holiday in the Canary Islands in 1890, brings the collection to a close. The works are performed by critically-acclaimed Gabriel Tacchino, one of the great post-war French classical pianists, and the Orchestra of Radio Luxembourg, directed by Louis de Froment.Other information:- The reissue of one of the gems from the famous VOX catalogue: the complete Saint-Saëns Piano Concertos played by Gabriel Tacchino and the Orchestra of Radio Luxembourg, conducted by maitre Louis de Froment.- Saint Saëns? piano concertos are deservedly popular, especially number 2 and 4, but also no. 5 (with the famous African sound experiments) is played regularly nowadays, being an immensely enjoyable and attractive crowd-pleaser. All of them abound in good tunes, glittering virtuosity and a general sense of French charm, wit and drama (but never too much?).- Booklet contains the original liner notes.

Weber: Euryanthe Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

A careful blend of recitative, arioso and set piece, Euryanthe was Carl Maria von Weber's second opera, first performed in 1823 (two years after the premiere of Der Freischütz) and based on an early 13th-century French romance with a libretto by Helmina von Chézy -- the eccentric author of Schubert's five-act Rosamunde. The work is largely based on the then common opera theme of a husband driven to test his wife's fidelity. Lysiart, Adolar's secret rival, boasts that he can lead the latter's betrothed Euryanthe astray -- a claim to which each reacts by staking all his possessions on the outcome. Lysiart appears to have triumphed when Eglantine, jealously in love with Adolar, manages to unlock from Euryanthe a secret concerning Adolar's dead sister, who will not find rest until the ring from which she drank poison is wet with tears; Adolar, distraught, abandons Euryanthe and gives up all his possessions. Things take a turn for the better, however, when Eglantine's betrayal is uncovered by the king and his hunting party, who stumble upon an exhausted Euryanthe after she has just saved Adolar from a huge serpent. Alleging that Euryanthe has died, the king guilt-trips Eglantine at the ensuing peasant wedding into confessing her crime, whereupon she is fatally stabbed by an enraged Lysiart. Adolar is crazed with grief, but at this moment Euryanthe enters and the two are happily reunited.Rarely staged because of its weak libretto, Euryanthe is nevertheless a groundbreaking work due to its repeated use of chromaticism for depicting evil characters -- Weber was well ahead of his time in this respect, as music history would have to wait another 40 years before Wagner pursued the 'dissolution of tonality' on a similar scale in Tristan und Isolde. This recording, made in 1974, features a stellar cast (Nicolai Gedda and Jessye Norman sing the roles of Adolar and Euryanthe respectively) and is directed by esteemed Polish-born conductor Marek Janowski.Other information:- Recorded 29 June --7 July 1974, Lukaskirche, Dresden.- A star-studded cast in this recording of one of most successful and popular German romantic operas, Weber's Euryanthe: Jessey Norman in stellar form, legendary Nicolai Gedda, Siegfried Vogel, Rita Hunter, Tom Krause, and conducted by Marek Janowski, one of the most esteemed conductors of his generation, nowadays receiving great critical acclaim for his recordings of all Wagner operas.- A gem from the Berlin Classics catalogue, the booklet contains liner notes and synopsis.

Wagner: Die Fliegende Hollander Brilliant Classics

One of the greatest and most revolutionary composers of the nineteenth century, Richard Wagner transformed the realm of musical drama. Years before his towering successes of the Ring Cycle, Tristan und Isolde and Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, he wrote the now lesser-performed The Flying Dutchman, an opera that marks the beginning of Wagner's mature works. The opera -- premiered in Dresden in 1843 -- is based on Heinrich Heine's telling of the legend in which the captain of a ghostly vessel, The Flying Dutchman, is doomed to roam the seas for all eternity until he wins the love of a woman. The fate of the Dutchman is said to have struck Wagner as a mirror image of his own disastrous fate in Paris; having expected the city to hail him as a genius, he was left bitterly disappointed. From the outset, the overture depicts the vast expanse of the rolling sea and hints at the despair that is to come, while weaving together other leitmotifs that will reoccur later in the work. Other highlights include Senta's heartfelt ballad from Act II, the Dutchman's soliloquy 'Die Frist ist um' and the raucous shanty that is the Sailors' Chorus. The role of the Dutchman is sung by legendary lyric baritone Dietrich Fischer-Dieskau, described by The Guardian as 'the most influential singer of the 20th century'. Playing his love interest, Senta, is Marianne Schech, while Gottlob Frick takes the role of her father. The soloists are supported by the Chor der deutschen Staatsoper Berlin and the Staatskapelle Berlin, conducted by Franz Konwitschny.Other information:- Recording made in 1960, Grunewaldkirche, Berlin.- One of the classic recordings (1960) of Wagner's Flying Dutchman, now available on Brilliant Classics, in celebration of the Wagner Bicentennial 2013.- A star cast with a glorious Dietrich Fischer Dieskau, the heldentenor Rudolf Schock, Sieglinde Wagner, Gottlob Frick and the incomparable Fritz Wunderlich.

J.S. Bach: The Well-Tempered Clavier brilliant classics

Hans von Bulow called Bach's Well Tempered Clavier 'The Old Testament' of music -- Beethoven's 32 piano sonatas being the so called 'New Testament. Bach's set of 48 preludes and matching fugues is the ultimate in keyboard instruction. Intended for his son Wilhelm Friedemann, they consist of one prelude and fugue in each of the twelve major and minor keys, arranged in chromatic order. Bach used not only the '48' for teaching purposes, but also his French and English Suites as well. According to one of his pupils, Bach would set them to work on the Inventions first, followed by the Suites, and if the great man didn't feel like teaching, he'd sit at the keyboard and play from the preludes and fugues 'and thus turned these hours into minutes' according to pupil Heinrich Nikolaus Gerber. These works became the essential study for all the great pianists -- starting with Bach's sons, through Mozart, Beethoven, Hummel, Mendelssohn, Chopin, Schumann, Brahms, Liszt, Rachmaninov, Prokofiev and all the pupils of these great composer pianists.Daniel Barenboim has said of the '48' 'The chromatiscism in the C sharp minor prelude from Book 1 brings Wagner's Tristan und Isolde to mind. Or the fugue in E flat, which could be straight out of a symphony by Bruckner. In other words, The Well Tempered Clavier is not only the sum of everything that has preceded it, but it also points the way ahead. In European music there are very few composers whose work that applies. This is one of the main reasons for the towering stature of Bach's music.'Further information- Recording made in 2008- Harpsichords by Bruce Kennedy after Mietke (Book 1) and by Cornelius Bom after Ruckers (Book 2)- Pieter-Jan Belder studied with Bob van Asperen at the Amsterdam Sweelinck Conservatorium. Art and Politics - 2872004930

Art and Politics University of Nebraska Press

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

A master of mystery and paradox, Wagner spent his life composing himself while composing music. Written between 1864 and 1878, the essays in Art and Politics converge upon Wagner's desire to define and reform German culture. He was deeply annoyed that Germany seemed to satisfy itself with cheap theater, vulgar songs, and clumsy imitations of French art. In "What Is German?" he declared that German culture must rise above the common ruck. Citing "Music's wonderman" Johann Sebastian Bach as his precursor, Wagner fought to persuade his readers that German culture had a historic destiny, and that destiny was shaped first and foremost by music. As usual, embroiled in the defense of his operas and his person, Wagner recognized that his rescue from attack and poverty could not be expected from "Franco-Judaico-German democracy." He instead fixed his hopes elsewhere: "the embodied voucher" for fundamental law, the Monarch. He found himself at a turning point in his career. In 1864 King Ludwig II of Bavaria befriended Wagner and gave him badly needed financial support. This alliance aroused Wagner's enemies into further fits of jealousy.Yet, amid the public scorn, he worked on the production of Tristan und Isolde, drafted the libretto for Parsifal, and composed sections of Siegfried and Die Meistersinger. In these essays Wagner resumes his considerations of the close ties between religion and art. He calls art "the kindly Life-saviour who does not really and wholly lead us out beyond this life, but, within it, lifts us up above it and shews it as itself a game of play." These essays express his artistic credo and the knowledge of German literature that underpinned his claims for German genius. Following his ideals, he proclaimed his intention to raise the quality of German opera, by himself if necessary. This edition includes the full text of volume 4 of the translation of Wagner's works commissioned in 1895 by the London Wagner Society.
