Excerpt from The Journal of Philology, Vol. 12 § 2 mallem audire Cottam dum, qua eloquentia falsos deos sustulit, eadem veros inducat. This is the general reading of the MSS., except that A, with one or two inferior codices, has malem; but, as A has also nolent for nollent in § 7 the variation is unimportant. Heindorf followed by Muller reads malim. I retain the old text, and take the sentence to be equivalent to mallem audire eundem inducen-tem qui sustulerat, translating 'for my part I should have preferred to hear that same Cotta using the eloquence with which he abolished the false gods, to bring in the true.' For audire dum ef. Suet. Dom. 4 auditus est dum ab eo quaerit, and ray note on N. D. I. 58 videor audisse cum. For the discrepancy of tenses we have such parallels as Fin. So almost all the MSS. Edd. read with two inferior MSS. inveterari. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Journal of Germanic Philology, Vol. 1 (Classic Reprint) Forgotten Books

Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna

Excerpt from The Journal of Germanic Philology, Vol. 1 It has fared with Walther von der Vogelweide as with many another upon the roll of fame. Regarding his birth and his birthplace, his actual social status, his death, and his descendants, the muse of history is mute. In the absence of definite data, however, speculation has been rife, and with elaborate ingenuity has re-created from the shreds and tatters of sporadic references a characteristic and appropriate biography. Of what nature are these materials? Apart from the noble and imperishable monument of his poetic works, the meagre memorials of his existence and career may be quickly quoted. In Austria, as he himself says in one of his poems, in Austria he learned his art. "Ze Osterriche lernt ich singen unde sagen." At various castles and courts he appeared at various times as a transient guest, not always himself content, nor apparently always welcomed as he desired and deserved. Once at least he tarried, but briefly, at a monastery, that of Tegernsee, where, if any, purely aqueous was his entertainment, and humorous his expressed dissatisfaction, (l. w. 104, 23.) According to a record discovered in 1874, he, the "Cantor Waltherus de Vogelweide," received in the fall of 1203 the price of a mantle of pelt at the hands of Wolfger von Ellen-brechtskirchen, the Bishop of Passau, and later Patriarch of Aquileia. Excerpt from Journal of the Royal Asiatic Society of Great Britain and Ireland, 1850, Vol. 12 As the subject, in its different bearings and ramifications, is spread over some centuries, and refers to many distinct races, it may simplify its due demonstration to premise the various heads into which it seems divisible, subsequently examining these in detail. It is to be noted, in introducing this preliminary outline, that it has been found advie able, for the more satisfactory exposition of the whole case, to reverse the usual course of tracing successions downwards in the order of time, and, in lieu thereof, to work upwards from almost the only given and admitted local date we possess, the Valabhi iera. Excerpt from Edinburgh Medical Journal, 1861, Vol. 6 He has had no recurrence of disease in these parts. Two months before admission, he felt pain over larynx and difficulty of breathing, accompanied with disturbance of the general health. Poultices had been applied to the neck in front, where a swelling had begun to appear; and, after six weeks, matter made its way to the surface. On admission, patient is very emaciated. Immediately over thyroid gland, an opening as large as a shilling exists, with bright red, irritable edges, disclosing a mass of sloughy tissue, through which air passes during the acts of inspiration and expiration. Slough touched with nitric acid, and poultices applied. As the dead tissue projected, it was removed piece by piece, by forceps and scissors, and it became manifest that it was the thyroid cartilage and the isthmus of the gland. The edges of the ulcer were touched with nitrate of silver, and gradually contracted, so as to prevent the abnormal passage of air. When patient left, a very small opening existed, which is said to have completely closed since. This case has been classed with the foregoing on account of its character. Of Mamma, 6.
