Nikolay Andreyevich Rimsky-Korsakov showed musical promise as a child, but the pursuit of a Naval career meant that much of his grounding in musical theory was gained in between various tours of duty. Although best known in the Western world for his nationalist orchestral works, Rimsky-Korsakov brought Russian opera to the fore, so that by the end of his life, the genre was flourishing. The Golden Cockerel, written between 15 October 1906 and 29 August 1907, was inspired by Alexander Pushkin's tale and caused concern among the Russian authorities, with the story detailing the murder of a Tsar and providing a critique of the power associated with Tsarism. This predictably led to trouble with the censor, which demanded that the prologue, epilogue and fourteen lines of the libretto should be cut; Rimsky-Korsakov refused and the work was permitted to only appear in print. At the centre of the opera is the juxtaposition of two of the characters and their respective musical language: that of the rigid marches demonstrating the power of King Dodon and the delicate, ethereal chromaticism of the Queen of Shemaka, designed to sound other-worldly. This recording includes the opera in full, containing none of the cuts demanded by the censor.Of this 1985 recording by the Sofia National Opera, conducted by Dimiter Manolov, BBC Music Magazine wrote that 'the famous 19-minute coloratura show-piece ... is beautifully encompassed' by Elena Stoyanova, who sings the role of the Queen of Shemakha. The role of King Dodon is sung by Hungarian bass Nikolai Stoilov.Other information:- Recorded in 1985.- Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov is one of the most important Russian composers of romantic opera. His operas, often on themes taken from Russian folklore and fairy tales, abound in colourful and atmospheric scenes, with just the right tinge of spicy Russian melodic flavours.- The Golden Cockerel, based on a tale by Pushkin, was censored by the Russian authorities, accused of hidden political motives. This performance offers the complete, uncut version of the opera, one of Rimsky's finest and best known.Excellent performance by great Bulgarian voices and forces, a superb recording from the Balkanton catalogue.- The Booklet includes the synopsis of the opera, as well as notes on the composer and the work.

Opis - Gdy brakuje słów... Rozdarcie pomiędzy umiłowaniem życia a upodleniem, pasją a bezradnością jest częścią także naszej rzeczywistości. Czy człowiek w ubóstwie doświadcza jedynie frustracji i rozgoryczenia? Jakie pragnienia kryje twarz, zastygła w masce smutku? W kompozycjach Szostakowicza odnajdujemy czystą nostalgię, zaś w słynnym koncercie fortepianowym Ravela doświadczamy emocji różnorodnych, często skrajnych, lecz przede wszystkim łączących w fascynujący sposób to co wewnętrzne, z dźwiękami świata zewnętrznego pełnego ruchliwości i gwaru. Fenomenalny kwintet fortepianowy polskiego kompozytora romantycznego Juliusza Zarębskiego wrzuca nas ponownie w świat uczuć najbliższych dojmującemu smutkowi. Pomiędzy giętkimi melodiami Rimskiego-Korsakowa, szeroką frazą Rachmaninowa i płynnością Schumana balansujemy na granicy rozpaczy, której jednak nie sposób przekroczyć, dopóki w oddali skrzy się choćby iskierka nadziei. Lista utworów - Płyta 1 1. Alexander Glazunov: The Seasons, I. Winter: Winter Scene, Philharmonia Orchestra, Yevgeny Svetlanov 2. Alexander Glazunov: The Seasons, I. Winter: Variation 3: Hail: Allegro Moderato, Philharmonia Orchestra, Yevgeny Svetlanov 3. Robert Schumann: Humoreske Op.20: Hastig. Nach und nach schneller. Nach und nach immer lebhafter und starker. Wie vorher. Adagio, Piotr Anderszewski 4. Edvard Grieg: Sonata in F major, Op.8: I - Allegro con brio, Vilde Frang, Michail Lifits 5. Robert Schumann: Schumann: Fantasiestucke, Op. 73 - 1. Magariello, Luca - Sonate Fuer Violoncello Nr. 1 D 1. Adagio 2. Allegro Appassionato Magariello, Luca - Sonate Fuer Violoncello Nr. 2 A 1. Allegro Moderato 2. Andante Cantabile 3. Allegro Con Spirit Along with sonatas by Rachmaninov, Shostakovich and Prokofiev, the Second Sonata Op.81 is a repertoire work for cellists, Russian or otherwise, for its vein of melancholy Romanticism that is yet not so dark and introverted as most of the 27 symphonies for which Myaskovsky is best known. Meanwhile the First Sonata has been almost entirely neglected, even by performers so committed to the promotion of their musical heritage as Rostropovich, Gutman and Geringas. However, as this new recording reveals, it too belongs to the distinctively Russian tradition of soulful and affecting music for the cello; an early example (written in 1911, when Myaskovsky was 30 years of age and yet to graduate; he was a late developer as a composer) of the special empathy for the instrument that would also produce a wonderfully moody and atmospheric cello concerto: the Russian Elgar, perhaps. The Op.12 Sonata is unusually structured as two movements linked by a tempestuous recitative section. The perfect relationship between the simplicity of the themes and the intensity of the dialogue between soloist and accompaniment is such that the two instruments seem locked in a flurry of warmth and passion. In the finale there is a return to the opening material, culminating in a serene D major conclusion. Though this is an early work, it reveals on various occasions a remarkable degree of maturity. While the Sonata Op.12 emanates all the captivating freshness of an important work dating from the dawn of the composer

While the Sonata Op.12 emanates all the captivating freshness of an important work dating from the dawn of the composer’s output, his second sonata is entirely different in mood. It was written between 1948 and 1949, when Myaskovsky was 69, and in the throes of the health problems that were to bring him to his grave the following year. This is Luca Magariello’s second album for Brilliant Classics, after his participation in the album of complete piano trios by Hummel (BC94898). Nikolay Myaskovsky (1881-1950) was educated (after a failed schooling for Military Engineer, prompted by his father) at the famous St Petersburg Conservatoire under the tutelage of Rimsky-Korsakov, Lyadov and Glazunov. His musical style has absorbed the nationalistic Russian tradition of these masters, but Myaskovsky widened his horizon by his acquaintance with Richard Strauss and his compatriots Prokofiev and Stravinsky, the former becoming one of his closest friends. The two Cello Sonatas, presented on this new recording, fully exploit the expressive potential of the instruments, creating a warm, passionate atmosphere in which the flowing melodic lines of the cello are supported by the rich harmonies of the piano. Italian cellist Luca Magariello won First Prize in the prestigious Khatchaturian Cello Competition, which started his international career.

Russian Piano Trios Brilliant Classics

Nagrania muzyczneMuzyka poważna

This 3-disc collection showcases Russian piano trios from the mid-nineteenth to early-twentieth centuries. Piano trios were unheard of for Russian composers until Mikhail Glinka wrote one in 1832; it earned the epithet 'Pathétique' as it seemed to be a reflection of Glinka's general sadness at the time of writing, the piece alternating between caustic tension and attempts at light-hearted optimism. A mournful, melancholic influence then became characteristic of the Russian piano trio: Tchaikovsky unknowingly created a tradition when he composed his offering in 1882 -- one of his greatest chamber works and which he dedicated to his recently deceased and much-missed friend Nikolay Rubinstein. On several subsequent occasions, piano trios were written as memorials. The collection also includes the mathematically-governed trio of Sergey Taneyev, who had gained a reputation as a cerebral composer, and the trio of Rimsky-Korsakov, whose mastery of opera and vocal writing can be seen in the final movement as each instrument takes on its own 'voice' and emotion -- thus resembling an interaction between characters. Alexander Borodin used the Classical model for his trio, although it contains surprising chromaticism as well as dramatic changes of temperament, including the tragic hymn in the second movement. Anton Arensky's take on the genre completes the collection. The Moscow Piano Trio was formed in 1976 and has achieved huge success in international competitions, notably winning the Maurice Ravel Gold Medal at the Bordeaux 'Mai Musical'. The trio is comprised of pianist Alexander Bonduriansky, violinist Vladimir Ivanov and cellist Mikhail Utkin.Other information:- Recorded July 1990 (CD1--2) and January 1992 (CD3), Tchaikovsky Conservatoire, Moscow- A fine and substantial collection of piano trios by Russian composers: full blooded, highly romantic works, which express the Slavonic soul in the deeply sonorous vibrations of the cello, the soaring melodic lines of the violin and the brilliant and virtuosic flourishes of the piano.- Excellent performances by the famous Moscow Trio.- Extensive liner notes on each work in the booklet and artist biographies.
