Rebay: Sonatas for Flute and Guitar Brilliant Classics
Książki
An instrument that is almost entirely absent from the output of the great pre-twentieth-century composers, the guitar has long been viewed as a means to discovering new repertoire and neglected composers. One such example is Ferdinand Rebay, whose works (which have only recently come to light) present a unique case in bridging the central-European gap. This release is dedicated to his two Sonatas for Flute and Guitar.Rebay believed that the blending of wind and guitar timbres produced a far more attractive sound than that of winds and piano, and the two sonatas -- written in 1942 -- date from an immensely productive period as regards the composer's chamber duo output for guitar. Heavy in dialogue, they reveal a technique deeply rooted in Viennese tradition; from the Neoclassical style of the First, whose Scherzo exudes Beethovenian inspiration, to the stirringly Romance feel of the Second, with its broad phrasing and intensely lyrical passagework, these are two strikingly different works of character that together illuminate a fascinating area of past-century music-making.In representing the first recording of the two sonatas -- works that currently exist only in manuscript form -- this release forms a significant addition to Brilliant Classics' chamber music discography. The two young Spanish artists on the disc, María José Belotto and Gonzalo Noqué (who created the performing editions), set a high standard with their virtuosic display, arguing a strong case for why this composer deserves to be better known.Other information:- First recordings of the works made in 2011, performed from manuscripts.- Includes booklet notes and biographies of the performers.- The combination of flute and guitar enjoy a long tradition, going back to Robert De Visée, and, later in the Classical Period, composers Joseph Kaspar Mertz and Mauro Giuliani. The combination is a happy one, the long and flowing cantilenas of the flute embedded in the rich sonorities and harmonies of the guitar.- Brilliant performances by Maria José Belotto and Gonzalo Noqué, who also participated in Brilliant Classics' earlier Rebay issue: the Quartets (BC 9250).

Punitive Damages The University of Chicago Press
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
Over the past two decades, the United States has seen a dramatic increase in the number and magnitude of punitive damages verdicts rendered by juries in civil trials. Probably the most extraordinary example is the July 2000 award of $144.8 billion in the Florida class action lawsuit brought against the cigarette manufacturers. More puzzling were two recent verdicts against the auto manufacturer BMW in Alabama. In identical cases, argued in the same court before the same judge, one jury awarded $4 million in punitive damages, while the other awarded no punitive damages at all. In cases involving accidents, civil rights and the environment, multimillion dollar punitive awards have been a subject of intense controversy. But how do juries actually make decisions about punitive damages? To find out, the authors - specialists in psychology, economics and the law - present the results of controlled experiments with over 600 mock juries involving the responses of more than 8,000 jury-eligible citizens. They find that although juries tended to agree in their moral judgements about the defendant's conduct, they rendered erratic and unpredictable dollar awards.Jurors also tended to ignore instructions from the judges; showed "hindsight bias", believing that what happened should have been foreseen; and penalized corporations that had based their decisions on careful cost-benefit analyses. While judges made many of the same errors, they performed better in some areas, suggesting that judges (or other specialists) may be better equipped than juries to decide punitive damages. With a wealth of new data and a host of provocative findings, this book documents a wide range of systematic bias in jury behaviour and should be valuable for anyone interested in punitive damages, jury behaviour, human psychology and the theory of punishment.

How I Beat Fischer's Record - Judit Polgar Teaches Chess 1 (twarda okładka)
Szachy > Postęp szachowy
Wersja językowa książki - angielska. "Notions of chess have been shattered by a teen-age Hungarian girl - some call her modest and soft-spoken, but many opponents know her as a ferocious tiger over the board - who after years of steady progress began breathing down the necks of the top men and now has broken the barrier of one of the world's most exclusive clubs: she has earned the rank of grandmaster at 15 years, 5 months, one month younger than Bobby Fischer when he did it 34 years ago." New York Times, 1992Great achievements often take a lifetime of preparation, but when these achievements are becoming the World Number 1 at the age of 12 and the youngest ever grandmaster at the age of 15 you have to start early! In this very personal book Judit Polgar describes her early moments of success and the chess ideas she needed to master to achieve them. This exceptional book is the beginning of a unique project where one of the greatest players of our time transforms her personal journey to the top into a roadmap for everyone who ever wanted to better themselves in the game of chess. Judit Polgar has been ranked 1st on the Women's rating list from 1988 to this day. In 2005 she became the only woman in chess history to participate in the World Championship final.ISBN: 978-1-907982-19-4 - 384 pages - Published 21 September 2012Reviews"The games are typically annotated gently and accessibly, with far more explanations than variations. I liked the fact that the first chapter (called 'Tricks') is a simple celebration of her youthful trickiness - a feature shared by many other young players...The unusual upbringing of the Polgar sisters is well known, but this book is not meant as a critique of that, although it is both personal and reflective. In fact, the impression is simply very positive - that chess was fun, and threw many opportunities their way. Ther are plenty of charming photos and anecdotes throughout, and Judit often discusses the ways in which her training gradually shaped her play. GM Luke McShane , New In Chess"Throughout the book Judit has provided an abundance of personal insights and anecdotes, from the 'lucky sweater' that helped her to victory in New York, to summer snowball fights in Iceland! Above all else though, she set out to give the book real instructional value so as to benefit players of varying abilities, as well as chess trainers." ChessBase (full review)"Sometimes, however, a book comes along which every chess enthusiast will want to buy. Among that select handful must surely be the first to be written by Judit Polgar...What players of all ages and strengths will relish is her very frank descriptions of the mischievous thrill she would get when tricking much older, normally male, players. Thus, after one of them fell for a lethal Polgar tactic, she writes, "Oops. My opponent's face turned red instantly." There is even a photograph of the two players after this game, with the grandmaster in question looking as if he had just swallowed a wasp." Dominic Lawson , Standpoint (full review)"The book serves the double purpose of being autobiographical (about her early years and the rise to the GM title), as well as illustrating how an understanding of chess develops from simple tactical tricks to more sophisticated strategic considerations. The book does this well and can beneficially be read both to learn more about the phenomenon that is Judit Polgar and to improve one's chess understanding." Skakbladet "The book has plenty of photographs, most of which were new to me. Some of them show how much chess has changed since the 1980s. On page 13 there is a snap of Judit working hard over a real chess board, writing notes (with pen and paper!) with a desk covered in chess literature, including a New in Chess Yearbook and a volume of the Encyclopedia of Chess Openings...How I Beat Fischer's Record presents a feast of nostalgia, entertainment and great chess. It is an inspirational chess book." Sean Marsh (full review)"One of the qualities that undoubtedly helps her to be so popular is one that has surely helped her greatly as a chess player: she is (or sure seems to be!) relentlessly positive and optimistic. This comes through throughout the book and is even infectious...The games and game fragments throughout the book are well annotated, but not with an avalanche of variations. Analysis is there, but this is a reader-friendly book." Dennis Monokroussos , Chess Today"Polgar comes across as a friendly and, at first, somewhat na

What happens when America's First Son falls in love with the Prince of Wales? When his mother became President, Alex Claremont-Diaz was promptly cast as the American equivalent of a young royal. Handsome, charismatic, genius--his image is pure millennial-marketing gold for the White House. There's only one problem: Alex has a beef with the actual prince, Henry, across the pond. And when the tabloids get hold of a photo involving an Alex-Henry altercation, U.S./British relations take a turn for the worse. Heads of family, state, and other handlers devise a plan for damage control: staging a truce between the two rivals. What at first begins as a fake, Instragramable friendship grows deeper, and more dangerous, than either Alex or Henry could have imagined. Soon Alex finds himself hurtling into a secret romance with a surprisingly unstuffy Henry that could derail the campaign and upend two nations and begs the question: Can love save the world after all? Where do we find the courage, and the power, to be the people we are meant to be? And how can we learn to let our true colors shine through?Casey McQuiston's Red, White & Royal Blue proves: true love isn't always diplomatic.

Brian Eno Bloomsbury Publishing
Książki / Literatura obcojęzyczna
On the back of his published diary Brian Eno describes himself variously as: a mammal, a father, an artist, a celebrity, a pragmatist, a computer-user, an interviewee, and a 'drifting clarifier'. To this list we might add rock star (on the first two Roxy Music albums); the creator of lastingly influential music (Another Green World; Music for Airports); a trusted producer (for Talking Heads, U2, Coldplay and a host of other artists); the maker of large-scale video and installation artworks; a maker of apps and interactive software; and so on. All in all, he is one of the most feted and most influential musical figures of the past forty years even though he himself has consistently downplayed his musical abilities, describing himself as a non-musician on more than one occasion. This volume examines Eno's work as a musician, as a theoretician, as a collaborator, and as a producer. Brian Eno is one of the most influential figures in popular music; an updated examination of his work on this scale is long overdue.
